  • I built a DIY teleprompter with a 10" LCD and $35, but basic photo glass wasn't perfect. Teleprompter build video: • How-to: $35 DIY Telepr...
The nice folks at McLean County Glass & Mirror (Bloomington, Illinois) said that most residential mirrored glass is too dark to shoot video through, but they found this 12x12" sample (free from the manufacturer). Mirrored glass-reflective mostly on one side, slightly bronze in color. They even cut it to 8x10" for me for free!
If you're building your own teleprompter, you can buy beamsplitter glass online for $60 to $150, but because of the relatively small size, you may be able to find effective and cheap (or free) glass from your local retailer.
For more info, watch the build video, and you can find more info in the description of that video: • How-to: $35 DIY Telepr...
The 10" monitor is one I found through DVXUser last year: www.dvxuser.com...

Even better idea is to apply a transparent two way mirror film on the side facing the smartphone. Super clean and cheap.
Also Get a 12x12 acrylic 1mm sheet to reduce the double letters that you see. Boom!!!

I built a teleprompter for my ipad over the summer for professional use. I found a company at telempromptermirrors and got a 12"x12" one for a few bucks. The workflow is choppy and its easier to have the files on the iPad or in email already, but it works fine for me. I also used a 12x12 piece of 1/8" plexiglass for a while before getting the teleprompter mirror.

"It only cost me a stop" implies "'increased lighting challenges /budget ...by one stop!'
I'm making the same choices now.
    Loved this, thanks.

I just missed out on a sweet gig because i didn't have a teleprompter. What sucks even more is that i knew about this DIY project months ago!

Thanks for having a look. You are right it does give a blurry image, but you can improve the image by making sure no reflection is coming from the camera by covering teleprompter with pull string bag or black material.(remember this is a budget DIY teleprompter) You can also use one sided mirror reflective film to cover the glass or of course you could source and buy "beam Splitter glass" Which I do point out in the video. Thanks again, please comment, vote and subscribe to my channel.

Great tutorial. To minimize the blurry text on glass try using tempered
glass screen protector for an ipad or smart phone. Only down side is
    you can't cut it size.

I was able to find some mirror glass from my local glass place, the one I ended up getting took me down 9 stops! great if you're shooting outdoors because it's almost a built in ND filter.
I will be purchasing some beamsplitter glass (around $40 for an 8x10 I found) and see how that compares

You could also just use the glass that came with the picture frame but put reflective one-way film on it. A search on ebay for "ONE WAY WINDOW FILM Privacy Vision Mirror Reflective Glass Mirrored tint" will bring up some results around £5 for the cheapest cut but there the sample is only £1. unfortunately they don't say what size the sample is. But I suppose you could inquire.

Easy solution. Just call around first before you bother to go in. I did a search for "glass shops portland" and came up with Culver Glass here in town. culver-glass.com/. They were super nice and easy to work with.

Hay Griffin, I made a heavy duty Teleprompter baised off of the ideas you gave for one, I posted a video response with the video, you do not have to use it or even watch the video, but if you do, that would be cool. I also talked about a free teleprompter software for Linux users (all of 1% of us out there haha). Anyways, keep up good videos!

Someone said it is "one-way glass" that this guy (Griffin Hammond) used in his video, and that is what you should ask for at the store if you want to use the glass he used.

As a quick update to my last post, I bought the $40 8x10 beamsplitter glass, and it works to perfection, it takes me down about 1 stop and is extremely clear to read the LCD. Telepromptermirror's website is where I got it, you can get custom cut sizes for pretty cheap (google them youtube doesn't allow links)
Their site looks a little clunky but the glass was outstanding. I did the 70% transparency for my prompter. I am only 1 state away from them and got it in 2 days.

@rubioproductions It looks like that site only has software. That is OK - if you want to prop a laptop up under your camera lens. But what he has built here lets you look right into the lens while reading.

@griffinity Yeah, I was gonna say that the image through the mirrored glass was IMO much better then the regular glass. I guess the tint or something makes it look nice, idk.

Clearly, Griffin doesn't read comments or else he'd respond to the numerous request for the specific name of the glass he got.
I called McLean glass to ask them and the owner said his wife was the one that sold the glass to Griffin, but she was busy w/ a client, took down my name & sed he'd call me back, but never did. I called back & got v/m. Womp womp.
I wound up building a dirt cheap one out of a cardboard box with a pane of glass cut to fit ($15). Taadaa...

I am planning to make a replica ww2 aircraft gun sight and i was wondering if you can see through to the other side of this mirrored glass
beam splitter glass is semi see through and i was wondering if you knew of any cheap ways to get a ghosted image similar to that of a teleprompter that still lets you see beyond the glass itself

There is another guy who made a DIY teleprompter and he used black plexiglass/black acrylic. He used 18 × 24 × 1⁄8th″ black acrylic, about $12 + $12 shipping, from eStreetPlastics.com. His website has great instructions with photos for making the teleprompter. His site is www.kv5r.com. Click the "Photo-Video" tab, then click "teleprompter" tab.

+JesusLives888 I just looked at this KV5R site. A lot of work, but no camera set in the middle of the screen. I made a 7 inch monitor and have a cable running to it. the camera is just on the bottom edge of the monitor. If you like I can show you what i did. Works pretty good. Let me know, www.whodataficionado.com/

I recently built a teleprompter but to my surprise, when I used it with a teleprompter app I downloaded, it reads from right to left like Arabic writing. What can I do to invert it?

    • @alain99v6
      @alain99v6 7 лет назад

of course it will read in reverse since you are looking into a mirror reflection, you have 3 choices 1 finding a real teleprompter monitor that physically reverse the image, 2 buying a VGA or HDMI reversing box or 3 using a more powerfull computer with a professional prompter software that could flip the prompter screen output while keeping the operator screen normal

So the author of this video mentioned the following specs of the mirrored glass:
    Mirrored glass
    f/1.4
    1/125
    ISO 320
    white balanced
Now I wonder what f/1.4 and 1/125 mean?
