Oregon has 7000 mountain lion. They are dessimating deer populations, porcupines, basically anything with two or four legs. Our state should only have 1400. People like you are why our state is out of control and why our forests are no longer SAFE. Do us all a favor and do some research. The gestation period is 90 days. They could potentially have four litters a year and they go into heat on demand when needed/wanted. Humans/livestock are at risk. Period.

The one animal that can rationalize any behavior, however abhorrent! I was part of the culture for decades. I lived and worked on a cattle ranch. I tracked and hunted in a number of Western states, and northern Canada. Then I went to university, started to learn how nature works and realized what a fool I had been. I started hunting wildlife again, with a camera. Thirty-eight countries later, I can tell you, killing is not the solution. There are problem predators that need to be eliminated but, that is the exception, not the norm.
I really like the concept that your dogs are family. I know they are better dogs when they are a part of the "pack," watching TV on the couch! I love all dogs and that's just where they belong, warm and happy and loved.
I agree with Tyler 110% in his way of raising and training hounds. Mine live in the house with me also, I have no kids, so the dogs are my family/children. it is a huge myth that if you treat hounds like house pets, it ruins them. I learned from Wiley Carroll 30 years ago, the more affection and love you show your dogs, the better and more dedicated hunters they will be! I absolutely love chasing predators with my hounds, I just wish I could find a way to do it 24/7 myself like Tyler has been able to do. congrats on your success, you've done very well for yourself and your family!

They are so beautiful, majestic, and deadly...Ive seen them on our property and one was even spotted in the parking lot at the local college when we were getting out of class one winter night. Here in rural New Mexico it can come down to you or them... or your children, livestock, or pets. I dont like to see them killed but sometime its a matter of survival. My neighbor had to kill one because it was up in their tree watching their grandchildren play!

You’re very lucky that these cougars don’t realize just how easily they could rip the hounds apart. Instead they just run up the tree, uncertain of what the dogs are capable of.

I support hunting for food but not trophy hunting or poaching. I wouldn’t want to kill these beautiful, highly intelligent, and fierce creatures. Apex predators are important to the ecosystem....Asia is losing tigers because of trophy/poaching! ....there are other ways to manage livestock: guard dogs that been doing it for centuries, electric fencing, etc. And As fierce an apex predator can be, they are no match for a man with a gun. It’s an extremely unfair advantage for the man to believe he’s doing a sport just by the push of a finger. No offense! 😔

What's with the paranoia? I live in LA county, which is the only urban county in the U.S. with mountain lions. No one in LA county has been attacked by a mountain lion, no one.
Just FYI, California has wildlife control specialists to cull the lion population every year. And there have been lion attacks in California, some fatal, in recent years.
I'm not talking about all of California, just LA county. Mountain Lions are revered in this county, and I've never heard of anyone in LA county being killed by a mountain lion. My understanding (and you can correct me) is that the mountain lion population countrywide has decreased by 50 percent in the last 20 years. Who determines the number of mountain lions per cull? By what criteria is are these determinations made? Why is the population plunging? Do the culling programs need a serious re-think?
I'm not sure where you got that statistic from. In all the western US states and Canadian provinces where they reside, mountain lion #'s have generally increased, not decreased, over the last few decades. The hunting is managed carefully, usually using a quota system. And in some cases, culling mountain lion #'s has been crucial to the recovery efforts of other animals (big horn sheep are a prime example of that). As for California's culling policy, I don't know if there are more effective methods. My guess is that if there were, California would be using them instead of lethal methods. As it currently stands, California has to kill ~100-200 lions every year for reasons of public safety and livestock predation. Some would argue that it was foolish for that state to abolish lion hunting, because the state has to spend taxpayer dollars to accomplish the same thing that hunters would have done for free.

The mental picture of a mountain lion driven up a tree by baying dogs isn't a pretty one.) I heard that statistic in what appeared to be a carefully researched documentary on PBS about a year ago. The wildlife scientist who quoted the statistic was alarmed and worried. He said that even collared research cats are being killed by private citizens. As to your point about who should be doing the culls. My vote is with the state because I have much greater confidence in their sticking to guidelines. Most private citizens are respectful of rational limitations, but some are not. Of course, my larger concern is for all big cats worldwide, all of whom are disappearing at alarming rates. So when I hear about dwindling mountain lion populations, my fear is that they will suffer the same fate as tigers, lions, jaguars, and cheetahs.
I would encourage to read some research literature from actual wildlife agencies (both state and federal), instead of relying on solely on PBS documentaries. In most of the western states or provinces, mountain lion #'s have either increased or maintained a healthy population. Excepting the Florida Panther (which is a subspecies) the North American Cougar is not endangered or threatened. I understand that hound hunting isn't appealing to everyone's sensibilities, but you should understand that it is one of the few viable methods for actually hunting these animals and there is quite a bit of work that goes into such hunting methods (much of which is never shown on camera). It also helps to ensure that the hunter is targeting appropriate animals (in terms of age and sex). Private hunters have done just fine managing other game species under the guidance of state regulations. There is no reason they couldn't do the same for mountain lion in California; private hunters have continually hunted lion in most of the surrounding states with no ill effect to the lion populations. Arguably, the only reason the lion hunt was outlawed in California was because of animal-rights activism; it had nothing to do with scientific recommendations from the state biologists.

There are more ways to get these animals than using hounds. South Dakota reached their quota several years without the use of dogs, but yes you are right, a group of houndsmen would have probably filled the quota much sooner, and they haven't reached their quota for a couple years. If a guy was restricted to using only leashed dogs, would this be a waste of time or a viable alternative to using only tracks in the snow.
Gotta love the animal extremists. Look, people. I love animals to death, I've watched documentaries about every kind ever since I was a little kid; but, these cats do need to be managed. If you go back far enough, Cougars were chased and killed by wolves LONG before humans pushed them out. The two fought for predatory dominance essentially and their territories overlapped. Until both species are restored to a sort of balance then there is always going to be a surplus of cats/wolves that will either kill too much prey or start moving into farmland. Both aren't good and both will lead to suffering. So, as long as it's necessary and the person hunts responsibly/legally, there is nothing wrong with it

You need some education in population dynamics. More than anything there is a bottom regulation and not top down. In other words the amount of cats in this case are regulated by the amount of food (simplistic reasoning). If there is not enough food, they die/starve or are forced to increase there territory or looking for a new territory. Male puma's don't share their territories, so it is just mathematics how many cats will/can live in a certain area. No need for human intervention for population regulation.
Tyler, Great Video. Im from Oregon. We are overrun with cats. 7000 in our state. I have seen 3 in 3 years hunting deer. Our state is so full of animal lovers that they don't respect the balance you speak of. Oregon from what I have been told by ODFW should only have 1400 cats statewide, not 7000. Our deer populations are in huge decline and they are coming into town and of course the cats follow them into town. Many pet cats and dogs and goats are devoured each year. Mankind has far too many tools at its disposal necessary to keep these majestic cats at bay from interfering in its livelihood, that the need to kill just one, under the guise of, "conservation", is appalling to me.
You don't have to hunt and kill elk or whitetail deer or even domestic cow for that matter, but some people choose to do so. There is nothing wrong with hunting so long as it is done in a sustainable matter. Arguably, the fees/taxes from hunting are the single biggest reason that North America's animals have done so well in years past.

They have rebounded somewhat in the west, but their population has been obliterated and never recovered. They used to cover the entire continent, they are still extinct in the eastern 2/3 of North America (notice how their population all through South America is fairly healthy). If individual states or provinces want to pass legislation on this they should have the right, but just because the Mountain Lion is healthy in South America does that mean we should hunt them to extinction in North America (it is the same species). Just because the mountain lion is healthy in the western US does that mean we should never allow them to recover their natural range east of the rockies, all the way to the east coast from Canada to Florida?

Those of us who live on farms and ranches where hunting has been restricted know that there are way too many of these big cats. We have 6 in our area now. The result of that number of big predators is that the deer population is very, very low this year. And we’re losing farm animals (and pets) to predation. The only good “mountain lion news” as of June 2019 in northwest Oregon is that I have my hunting tag, and lion meat is delicious.

As for California's culling policy, I don't know if there are more effective methods. My guess is that if there were, California would be using them instead of lethal methods. As it currently stands, California has to kill ~100-200 lions every year for reasons of public safety and livestock predation. Some would argue that it was foolish for that state to abolish lion hunting, because the state has to spend taxpayer dollars to accomplish the same thing that hunters would have done for free.

I heard that statistic in what appeared to be a carefully researched documentary on PBS about a year ago. The wildlife scientist who quoted the statistic was alarmed and worried. He said that even collared research cats are being killed by private citizens.
As to your point about who should be doing the culls. My vote is with the state because I have much greater confidence in their sticking to guidelines. Most private citizens are respectful of rational limitations, but some are not.
Of course, my larger concern is for all big cats worldwide, all of whom are disappearing at alarming rates. So when I hear about dwindling mountain lion populations, my fear is that they will suffer the same fate as tigers, lions, jaguars, and cheetahs.
I would encourage to read some research literature from actual wildlife agencies (both state and federal), instead of relying on solely on PBS documentaries. In most of the western states or provinces, mountain lion #'s have either increased or maintained a healthy population. Excepting the Florida Panther (which is a subspecies) the North American Cougar is not endangered or threatened.
I understand that hound hunting isn't appealing to everyone's sensibilities, but you should understand that it is one of the few viable methods for actually hunting these animals and there is quite a bit of work that goes into such hunting methods (much of which is never shown on camera). It also helps to ensure that the hunter is targeting appropriate animals (in terms of age and sex).
Private hunters have done just fine managing other game species under the guidance of state regulations. There is no reason they couldn't do the same for mountain lion in California; private hunters have continually hunted lion in most of the surrounding states with no ill effect to the lion populations. Arguably, the only reason the lion hunt was outlawed in California was because of animal-rights activism; it had nothing to do with scientific recommendations from the state biologists.
The sheer arrogance and self-justifying importance of man, thinking nature needs him to intervene, would be laughable, if it weren't instead so pathetic.
Since mankind walked upright we have taken part in the natural setting of things. That includes the hunting and killing of predators.
There are more ways to get these animals than using hounds. South Dakota reached their quota several years without the use of dogs, but yes you are right, a group of houndsmen would have probably filled the quota much sooner, and they haven't reached their quota for a couple years. If a guy was restricted to using only leashed dogs, would this be a waste of time or a viable alternative to using only tracks in the snow.

Gotta love the animal extremists. Look, people. I love animals to death, I've watched documentaries about every kind ever since I was a little kid; but, these cats do need to be managed. If you go back far enough, Cougars were chased and killed by wolves LONG before humans pushed them out. The two fought for predatory dominance essentially and their territories overlapped. Until both species are restored to a sort of balance then there is always going to be a surplus of cats/wolves that will either kill too much prey or start moving into farmland. Both aren't good and both will lead to suffering. So, as long as it's necessary and the person hunts responsibly/legally, there is nothing wrong with it

You need some education in population dynamics. More than anything there is a bottom regulation and not top down. In other words the amount of cats in this case are regulated by the amount of food (simplistic reasoning). If there is not enough food, they die/starve or are forced to increase there territory or looking for a new territory. Male puma's don't share their territories, so it is just mathematics how many cats will/can live in a certain area. No need for human intervention for population regulation.

Tyler, Great Video. Im from Oregon. We are overrun with cats. 7000 in our state. I have seen 3 in 3 years hunting deer. Our state is so full of animal lovers that they don't respect the balance you speak of. Oregon from what I have been told by ODFW should only have 1400 cats statewide, not 7000. Our deer populations are in huge decline and they are coming into town and of course the cats follow them into town. Many pet cats and dogs and goats are devoured each year. Black bear populations are exploding too, over 30,000 in Oregon up from 18,000 in 1980. Now we have the wolves coming in. Is there any hope for Oregon's insane overpopulaiton of predators??? You don't have to hunt and kill elk or whitetail deer or even domestic cow for that matter, but some people choose to do so. There is nothing wrong with hunting so long as it is done in a sustainable matter.

They have rebounded somewhat in the west, but their population has been obliterated and never recovered. They used to cover the entire continent, they are still extinct in the eastern 2/3 of North America (notice how their population all through South America is fairly healthy). If individual states or provinces want to pass legislation on this they should have the right, but just because the Mountain Lion is healthy in South America does that mean we should hunt them to extinction in North America (it is the same species). Just because the mountain lion is healthy in the western US does that mean we should never allow them to recover their natural range east of the rockies, all the way to the east coast from Canada to Florida?

Well, that’s a city boy talking. Those of us who live on farms and ranches where hunting has been restricted know that there are way too many of these big cats. We have 6 in our area now. The result of that number of big predators is that the deer population is very, very low this year. And we’re losing farm animals (and pets) to predation.
The only good “mountain lion news” as of June 2019 in northwest Oregon is that I have my hunting tag, and lion meat is delicious.
