I remember reading an article by the designer who said they sent Tiger 3 identical clubs and Tiger sent a note back saying he "liked the heavy one". They had to weigh each one to find out that one of the clubs was only a fraction heavier than the other two. I tried the clubs when they first came out and went back to my Callaway "Hawkeye" driver.
“We’ll take it out, we’ll give it a smash, then we’re going to come back inside and take a look at some numbers. And you might actually be surprised. I know I was.”
My dad still has this driver in the bag and he loves it. I gave him my old M3 but he hits the nike so much better than the M3. Shows that using the "lastest and greatest" equipment isnt always the best thing to do.
Thanks for one more interessting video. I remember from the early 00's, that Tiger was playing a big tournament, where he didn't use his driver very often. Instead he burned most of the courses with his T60 3-wood, where most of the other players were using their driver. I remember that this T60 panzerwagon nearly became legendary. I bought a T60 4-wood on sale, used it often from tee, and I loved this wood for many years. I wish that you can make a little video about that T60 "Tank".
It looks just like a Mizuno Pro 300S which was in the region of 300-320cc in headsize. These drivers were part of the early evolution from steel to titanium with high COR (“spring face”) technology. Compared with larger sized, multimaterial composite designs these days, the sweet area is small. That said, for old timers like me, it was massive back in 2000 when compared with persimmon heads! Beautiful classic clubs, but like an expensive lady, best admired from a distance, but don’t touch! Thanks for a fun trip down memory lane. 😁 (Disclaimer: I am a 48yr old who plays off 7, still using a Mizuno 300S and MP33s which includes a 2-iron. Since my tournament days are well behind me, I haven’t ever felt a need to upgrade my set from 2002. And at my age, I’m content with 280 up the middle!).

When I got serious about golf, that was my first driver. Full Nike set thanks to tiger. Gosh, totally forgot about this driver. Thanks for the nostalgia!
That was my first decent driver in 2001, and I played it until this year, when I got properly fitted and bought the Cobra F9. That's when I discovered that I had been sold a "D" type head. Explained a lot over the years. Still have my beloved blue (in 3 metal as well).
I had one of these. It was my first driver (other than the wooden one my dad cut down for me).I cleaned out my uncles garage and he gave it to me. I couldn't keep it in the fairway. :) One day when I was 14, the head snapped off at the range and outdrove the ball. The proshop had a Titleist 905 demo that they let me use for the round. Been bombing it down the middle ever since.
Been with a 905 S for about a decade. Tried all the new drivers with when they come into the pro shop with all their bells and whistles and I'll never get rid of he 905. Ever.
Thank you RICK, for what youre doing. A few of your lessons helped me card an 81 today at my favorite course. I played at HYLAND GOLF COURSE, Southern Pines, N.C. Thanks again, and keep up the wonderful videos. Also loved the video you did on the CALLOWAY EDGE UNISEX GOLF PACKAGE/SET.
Hi Rick a comment from sunny Spain , couldnt believe it when i saw this video !! i still have my 9.5 Nike driver in the bag and no plans to change ...... 17 years old and performs every time ! Played Valle de Este last week the driver still splits the fairways with exceptional distance. nice video Rick .....cheers
Watching some Tiger interviews, I learned that he uses different parts of the face in order to shape the ball. I can see how he will be unhappy if the face punishes him for doing what he does best.
I picked up one of those at a thrift shop recently for $4. I bought it as an interim driver after mine broke and I was saving up to replace it. I honestly enjoyed hitting it really! It's not bad. I have the 10.5 degree loft though so it's a bit shorter and more forgiving. But yeah, fun little piece of kit.
I had this driver back in 2003/4. I broke the stock shaft after a few months and refitted it with a rifle steel. I've never hit a driver more consistently than that driver...and the sound...iconic.
You are the best man, and are synonymous with golf now for me and my friends who golf. If you’re ever in NJ, come to Tamarack and I’ll treat you to both there 18 holes. The east course has been closed for almost 2 years and is about to open back up. Thanks for the endless quality content 🍻
Every Nike club I ever hit in a store was absolutely awful. Then they seemed to finally start getting it right with the Vapor line right as they got out of the market. I only tried the Vapor on the recommendation of a Golfsmith employee after he said the contact felt good and they felt like they created spin. I was impressed and then the following year (I think) they got out.
I have this driver and still chuck it in the bag for fun every now and again. Won a couple of longest drive society comps with it back in the day!! Love it.
I love watching the videos with the old Nike drivers being compared to the newer ones. Although the club is illegal, I would really like to see how the Nike 460+ Limited Edition would do.
I had this back in the day. I absolutely hated the feel and performance. Don’t think I kept it in the bag for more than a year. I remember going to an old Titleist 975d the same summer. Never looked back. Cool to see this review!
I love how much fun you have with golf. You are not afraid to laugh when you hit a bad shot or get excited when you absolutley pure one down the fairway. keep up the great videos.
HAd one of these. Bought it used in a Golf Galaxy for $50 back in 2005 or so. What I didnt realize at the time was that whoever had it before me put an OG Speeder 757 in it. I loved that club. SOme of the best drives Ive ever hit in my life were with that club. One day the shaft broke about 5 inches above the hosel. Ive been chasing that dragon ever since
I have a 7 handicap, but I’m stuck, I would love to see a video of breaking 70 and a breaking 80 video... also would LOVE to see a video on mentality of how you get over bad shots or tough holes, etc. mental golf is so important and I feel you’ll see a big spike in views.
Hi Rick, get the original Killer Whale that John Daly used to hit and see how you get on. I remember when they came out and we used to wonder how to hit something so big😂😂😂. It would barely be a three wood now😂😂😂
I had this driver and at the time it was as long as any driver on the market. I averaged about 280 with that. My taylor made 320 was 15 yards less. Of course I Switched away from it 2 years later for the titleist. I believe that Nike came with a fujikawa shaft witch became my 1st choice till the nv shaft. Nice job. When I bought it it was bigger easier to go up than down in size. So good on you Rick
Great vid sir! I am a fan of the old school drivers. Just before Christmas I picked up a Ping Zing Karsten 1 Wood! I am a fan of the sound the old wooden woods make...crack!
You should do 9 holes with Tiger's '97 Masters irons. He had a mixed set of Mizuno MP-14s in the shorter irons, and MP-29s in the longer ones. I am not sure where the break was. That would be a great vid.
The first time I was ever fitted for a driver was with Nike.........he put me in an 8* Sasquatch....x flex.......I was stunned but brother did that driver ever work for me.......300+ like one out of 3 shots.......had it for years !!!
Great to see this club venturing onto your channel. I’ve still got this and a 4 wood in my bag. Granted I don’t get out to play much nowadays so haven’t bothered changing it but I think I’d keep the 4 wood as it’s so easy to hit off the deck. I’ve always wondered if it was just my driver but does the face sit slightly closed on these when grounded? Compared to every other driver I’ve tried the face sits more closed than any of them.
I just loved my Powerbuilt Citation persimmons and I won many long drive contests at 300-340. !!! I didn't change until my faces wore down to a point that they were at 5* and unplayable.......tested many new ones and ended up with GBB 8* and gave me similar distance !!
Rick, the home sim’ looks like a winner for Homes and Gardens’ “UK’s Best Quarantined At Home Golf Simulators”. You may have to redecorate the range when this is all over! Keep doing what you do!
I still play the Nike Vapor irons. Played the Nike blade irons prior to these. I also have the F7 one length and played the Callaway Razor X irons too.
I had one of these right after it came out. It was a hook machine and I have learned the shaft wasn't stiff enough. It wasn't long either. My current driver is the epic sub zero with a rogue max 85gram x flex shaft.
I used to go to Golf Galaxy or the PGA Superstore or something and find the oldest looking driver they had and see if I could hit it 300 yards. Best I've done was with an old Titleist 983k which was a year after this Nike driver that I hit just over 300. Fun to see the difference over time. Distance hasn't increased a tremendous amount due to clubs, but the forgiveness is night and day.
I still have one of these and even put a steel shaft in it. I dont play it, but keep it as a piece of memorabilia. I believe Tiger was playing this driver when he hit one of my favorite shots he’s ever hit. The 2002 US Open at Bethpage Black, final round on #12 after the rain delay. Demolished that tee shot!!
I played his first King Cobra with the steel shaft. I loved that driver. My first drivers were wood. Favorite club ever was the wood Cobra baffler in 5 wood. I could hit that thing 230 yards. Out of the rough it was a beast!
Nice video Rick! How about doing one with really old club. Next step, two, three clubs from the early 90th Start with; Tommy Armour 845s Silver scot Allt the woods and the irons?! The video after that you can take the early 80th. Perhaps Macgregor cg 1800 Jack Nicklaus cavity back iron and the early titanium woods?! (We can go on forever...) Plenty of old gems out there (the irons - most would go right in the anybody's bag, no problem at all) and plenty of woods nobody use anymore (for good reason.) But still interesting to see how far you can hit them. Why not give it a shot?! I bet you can fins 3-4 set of old irons for the low, the middle and the high handicapper. Give people a chance to learn the best bargain they can find according to you.
I've always found that being able to hit a driver well is whether or not it feels comfortable in your swing. The best and most consistent driver I ever hit was a Regal steel shafted one! It was heavy but felt amazingly comfortable and used to bomb down the fairways, and no bigger than 350cc
993 comments coming right your way Rick. Great video.. getting us through this time. You have got me lifting the clubs again with your videos during this lock down. Thanks and keep up the great work.
I still hit mine. My high school coach was sponsored by them and got great deals on equipment. When he bought something and didn’t like it, he would just sell it to one of us on his team for what he got it at. I played regularly through HS and sporadically in the military. Now I’m getting back into the game regularly and still hit it decent. I won’t lie though, I’m likely to “upgrade” soon.
Rick, you must have so many clubs now!! I think I saw in your Q&A session with the Bad Golfers that you said you have 100s! How about showing us your collection at some point? The highlights, the favourites, the ones that promided so much but just never really performed - and the stuff you'd completely forgotten you had!! (Are you even able to get access during lockdown?) Cheers.
I own the 9 degree 300cc model with a Graphaloy blue xstiff and I hit it to this day around 300 on average. bought it in 2002 when I was 15. Still love it...don't think I could bring myself to buy another club.
I actually had this Driver in a 9 degree with a rifle 6.5 steel shaft in it! I did loose about 10-20 yards distance on it, but man the control I had with it was just brilliant, but as we do I fancied a chance ended up with a burner tour driver got mad distance with no control regretted getting rid of the Nike so much! Loved that driver!!
I got one in 9.5* not long after they were introduced - not b/c of the brand or pros using it, but b/c as I recall the price dropped to the basement pretty soon after it came out.
Good work! I had that driver and actually enjoyed hitting it, I was carrying as much as you are in those days and once in a while could get it past 300 yards with roll, Ball flight was definitely low.
My dad has had this in his back since '03 and I only just managed to find a driver a prefer (I stick to used clubs to save money and found a nice 9 degree Orlimar Trimetal I love)
That’s the driver I had in my bag from 2003 until a week-and-a-half ago. It’s a good driver, but it doesn’t have the pop it used to have. I bought a Cobra F9. I’m loving my F9!
I still have the Nike t40 3W somewhere. I think it came out right after this but it looks pretty much the same. I always liked it, had it in the bag for probably 5 or 6 years.
I’ve had this driver for something like 16 years. Still in my bag. Absolutely love it. As mentioned, so simple, and I loved the smaller head. I easily smashed this one over 300 (sometimes 350 at altitude) as a teenager and student. But mine is 9.5 degree. I’ve hit other drivers, but just never got used to bigger heads.
I'm a few years older than you and the way you felt about wanting this club as a teenager was like me with the Burner Bubble playing high school golf in the mid 90's. I never did get it.
@notformebeaky there are loads of videos that Rick has done over the years. The ones he did around 2017 on the full swing and driver swing were really good. I only got into golf recently and found the videos to be useful, repeated, and sometimes in slow motion! Lessons also helped, but the videos were a great source for me :)

Rick Shiels Golf I can get you a Nike ignite 410cc 8.5° driver with stiff shaft. I would love for you to try it

this was my first driver when i was like 13 yrs old, i won a hole in one competition to have enough money to buy it, and absolutely loved it

Now you need to do a back to back with the titleist that Tiger replaced it with.
Thanks for one more interessting video. I remember from the early 00's, that Tiger was playing a big tournament, where he didn't use his driver

Great film. Good to see enthusiasm and realism. Nice bloke. Oh, and his swing is quite good too..
I have this driver and still chuck it in the bag for fun every now and again. Won a couple of longest drive society comps with it back in the day!! Love it.
Just imagine if Tiger had stuck with Titleist...🤔
Tiger is not a sell out. Nike made whatever Tiger wanted. If it was not what Tiger wanted they would adjust it.
Rory was playing much better with Titleist as well before he swapped to Nike.
Or Rory stuck with them in 2011
I still drive a Nike vapor fly pro and still have not have no driver to beat it match it yes beat it no
aye he had an awful career after he left titleist!!!if only he kept the King Cobra Deep Face and Mp29/14 iron set he had at the 97 Masters!
I actually played one of these back when new. It was AWFUL.
Me too...The head had no feel and sounded dead and the shaft was garbage
The 1st Nike drivers were the 275 and I wanna say 350...the 400 and 450 came out a year or two later...the 275 was awful...I heard the 350 was decent
You should review the Nike sumo against the new drivers
I had one too, I remember it felt heavy and clunky
Im loving this new hitting bay! I hope Rick continues to make some of the videos there.
I remember looking at that driver in the shop and thinking wow those were the days lol love the videos and keep safe Rick👍🏻❤️
Huge fan there is a lot of things that you and Peter Finch show that help me with my golf set up and striking
Hey Rick, it would be awesome if you can test the drivers that were in production that year the Nike driver come out. A throw back Thursday special.
I've been playing this driver since 2003. I still love it.
HAd one of these. Bought it used in a Golf Galaxy for $50 back in 2005 or so. What I didnt realize at the time was that whoever had it before me put an OG Speeder 757 in it. I loved that club. Thanks for keeping us entertained during these times, love your videos btw
Love it Rick - remember Woods used a x100 steel shaft in it and won a US Open with this driver. I will so happily take it off your hands....please!!!
stephen carlin i still play my Taylor made 200 steel with xstiff riffled steel shaft. Straightest driver i have ever played
I have a 7 handicap, but I’m stuck, I would love to see a video of breaking 70 and a breaking 80 video... also would LOVE to see a video on mentality of how you get over bad shots or tough holes, etc. mental golf is so important and I feel you’ll see a big spike in views.
I used to game the nike ignite back in the day, I loved it.
I wonder how much difference using a ball from back then would also make on the distance you’re hitting it?
@@chickenclips Spin is one of the main reasons a ball would go further so.
@@chickenclips Well you're wrong, so maybe you should look up the dynamics of ball flight.
Josh Lynch lol what an idiot
@@TheChellCountryV2 I know, maybe if he learned how spin affects distance right?
There’s no difference in ball from when Tiger was using driver, to now. Still using a balata. That’s what he was known for.

Nike: Well yes but actually no.
Great vid sir! I am a fan of the old school drivers. Just before Christmas I picked up a Ping Zing Karsten 1 Wood! I am a fan of the sound the old wooden woods make...crack!
Great fun looking back Rick, I had a Nike driver back when I restarted playing golf, never had second shots off the fairway😥⛳️
Here from the Instagram live 🙌 this driver was a piece of work 😂
You should do 9 holes with Tiger's '97 Masters irons. He had a mixed set of Mizuno MP-14s in the shorter irons, and MP-29s in the longer ones. I am not sure where the break was. That would be a great vid.

Just stopped using it last September moved to an M2. Still got it. Rick nailed it. If you didn't hit it right it went everywhere.
Rick, you need to compare the old Cobra SS unlimited driver (with the illegal MOI) with new drivers. Would love to know how it compares.
I just loved my Powerbuilt Citation persimmons and I won many long drive contests at 300-340. !!! I didn't change until my faces wore down to a point that they were at 5* and unplayable.......tested many new ones and ended up with GBB 8* and gave me similar distance !!
My neighbor gave me one that he won when I was 12. I still have it with it’s original shaft and hit it occasionally I can push it out about 290 yards.
Rick, the home sim’ looks like a winner for Homes and Gardens’ “UK’s Best Quarantined At Home Golf Simulators”. You may have to redecorate the range when this is all over! Keep doing what you do!
When Nike came into the fold Tiger really busted out in late 90s. Nice edit bud. Love that simulator! I need me one for my vlogs.
Growing up I wanted everything Nike because of Tiger! Great video brought back a lot of memories seeing that driver!
My first driver I purchased in HS was the Titleist 975D 8.5 and I still have it. IT IS STILL AMAZING!
I still play the Nike Vapor irons. Played the Nike blade irons prior to these. I also have the F7 one length and played the Callaway Razor X irons too.
Super different video, love the twists you take on the channel!
Love it! More videos about famous golfers clubs please
Great video like always. Can you do a video on the Nike Sasquatch Sumo Driver. The one that was banned. It sounds like a metal bat.
I had one of these right after it came out. It was a hook machine and I have learned the shaft wasn't stiff enough. It wasn't long either. My current driver is the epic sub zero with a rogue max 85gram x flex shaft.
I owned one back in the day Rick and loved it. 9 degrees of loft also Nike pro combo irons I loved those as well. Take care 👍
I remember using that on Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004
Yep!! Next year (my fav of the franchise) was the Ignite! Good times
Good throw back video. Rick, what clubs were you hitting back in the photo you showed?
I was pushing for you. Super fun video!

I've always found that being able to hit a driver well is whether or not it feels comfortable in your swing. The best and most consistent driver I ever hit was a Regal steel shafted one! It was heavy but felt amazingly comfortable and used to bomb down the fairways, and no bigger than 350cc
I played with this driver from when it first came out to about 5 years ago. My favorite driver I've ever had still.
Have had one from time they came out. It's a task master of a club! But when hit pure there is nothing like it . Well Done Rick !!!

Great video.. getting us through this time. You have got me lifting the clubs again with your videos during this lock down.
Thanks and keep up the great work.
THANKS FOR ALL THE VIDEOS! You the man Rick!
I still use my Nike Pro Combo irons I purchased in 2002. Love them!
Rick Sir, would love to see if you could get your hands on the unreleased 2017 Nike Drivers... The VPR Pro or the VPR Strike.
(Are you even able to get access during lockdown?)
Cheers.
I love Nike Golf. I still use their original forged blades and Xex wedges!
pls upload one a day im bored and ur content is bomb
you understand how taxing one a day is yeah,,?
My dad has had this in his back since '03 and I only just managed to find a driver a prefer (I stick to used clubs to save money and found a nice 9 degree Orlimar Trimetal I love)
That’s the driver I had in my bag from 2003 until a week-and-a-half ago. It’s a good driver, but it doesn’t have the pop it used to have. I bought a Cobra F9. I’m loving my F9!
I still have the Nike t40 3W somewhere. I think it came out right after this but it looks pretty much the same. I always liked it, had it in the bag for probably 5 or 6 years.
I had an 8 degree stiff flex. Drew the ball well but was shorter than my 580 TM which came later. Now in my 3rd set..
Thanks for sharing!
Great video showing the technology advancements of golf clubs through the yrs
I'm a few years older than you and the way you felt about wanting this club as a teenager was like me with the Burner Bubble playing high school golf in the mid 90's. I never did get it.
I’m a little high rn, and he said “warm-up shots, I thought he said Walmart shots
Mr. Fredrikson yo I’m high too
Lmfao
@Les Moore Yes! Now that's funny! Guarantee most people don't get that.
I'm at sea level
I still use the 3 and 5 wood from this series. great clubs.
so do i
Love the videos Rick you’ve really helped me in my game and helped me get down to a 12 handicap at 14 thank you so much
@notformebeaky there are loads of videos that Rick has done over the years. The ones he did around 2017 on the full swing and driver swing were really good.
I only got into golf recently and found the videos to be useful, repeated, and sometimes in slow motion!
Lessons also helped, but the videos were a great source for me :)
It would be fun if you could find the model of Titleist driver he switched to and do a comparison
Anyone remember the lynx blackcat driver? Played that through highschool. I believe Fred couples played it. Least for giving driver i have ever played
1998 model year
Great little video Rick, I remember watching tiger hit that driver, like you say a simple/ tiny head driver but looks awesome
