"Public scrutiny is brewing for former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz on Wednesday as he testifies before a Senate committee about the company’s alleged anti-union practices.
In the last few years, as some workers for the coffee roaster and cafe chain have made high-profile attempts to unionize, the company has permanently closed stores where they worked and fired people who were helping organize. The company has consistently denied firing any employees or closing stores due to organizing activity."*

Regardless I’m glad I got out when I did . My EX company I worked for makes 10 to 50 billion dollars in (profits )a year . That’s Billions . And yet they won’t agree to better benefits . Corporate and political leaders need their workforce to be poor and desperate, and this requires workers to not have any bargaining power.

Starbucks was once a hip bohemian espresso place like many others, but positioned down by pikes place where many coffee houses would have a hard time getting a biz property. They were bought and expanded with big money backing with an idea of franchising the ancient and traditionally lefty coffeehouse business in a time when espresso was exploding in popularity in the US. They had a big variety of bulk beans, live music, employee and customer education, and they treated their labor as well as many coffee co-ops. They tried to source beans ethically, like any hippy coffee house but also had rapid upscaling and corporate marketing. They expanded knowlege and demand about traditional italian espresso drinks in the US beyond the regular consumer.
As they expanded and became monstrouslyprofitable, they stopped making traditional espresso, stopped being a coffee house, forgot ethics and labor, and became the mcdonalds of espresso, serving candy coffee drinks with espresso inspired names. Ironically, they pushed real coffee houses like the original starbucks'es into the margins. They were an above average corp with above average coffee and practices once but theyre the opposite of that now and should wither and die.

Fast-forward to today, rents have increased there 30-40% (conservatively) while this work ‘at-will state’ has a minimum wage of $7.25. I couldn’t make ends meet 10 yrs ago which is why I had to leave - can imagine the very real struggle for poor people there, now…so much for Mormon ‘values’. i dont understand how someone with so much money WOULDNT want their companies workers to be happy and well paid. I guess ill never understand rich people, if i had a personal wealth over a billion dollars my focus would be on improving every aspect of my company so that not only people would enjoy working there but would maybe consider making it their career because it would be sustainable for the worker. yet he's still hyper focused on maximizing labor profit margins over partner morale.
If you look at some of the salaries of the top 7 people at starbucks - their total compensation including cash+equity was 54,396,212 which is insane considering that is for 7 people. you can argue about fair compensation for executives in the comments all day long but the fact is that even if you split this up evenly that is almost 8 million per each of the 7 people.......8 million dollars could change not only one person but an entire families life - maybe even multiple generations. these employees are not asking for 8 million for each of themselves, they are just asking for enough wages to be able to afford rent, education, vehicles and other basic necessities for having a normal life in America. They are asking for a little respect.
it all comes back to this: if your employees are unionizing thats a pretty good indicator that you aren't treating them right, and they are finally fed up with it

      It's very simple.
      It is about their priorities.
billionaires desire control over workers, and this requires poverty to exist.
They are willing to spend twice whatever money they would spend on benefits on union busting instead because they don't want workers having power.
The truth of our politics lies in the risks we refuse to accept, and it is rising worker power, not continuing poverty, that our political leaders refuse to allow.
Billionaires would no longer have workers they could exploit through bad wages.
And their goods and services would become more expensive and rarer.

I stand with Bernie ! I was accepted into Local Union #400 IBEW, electricians in 1979 and it gave me opportunity for a much better way of life ! I 100% support Unions ! Union workers work hard, and get paid what their worth ! I also got an awesome education from on the job training and 4 years of school !
I met some of the smartest people I know ! So screw Starbucks ! I’m NOT accepting anything from Starbucks ! Even if it’s bought for me ! Unions also taught me to stand up for myself !
The solidarity in being a member made me feel secure for my future and the benefits are amazing ! 🇺🇸💙

Because the coffee is good and consistent. Don’t like the CEO, go to MCdonalds or Dunkin . Oh wait … they have no unions either. I am a democrat but I am no a socialist. Unions bankrupted the airline industry and the automotive industry by forcing rediculous pay increases that the companies could not longer afford and then the business went bankrupt. Unions are like an infection that eventually kill the host they feed off and in the end lull themselves when they have drained the host until death.

@11:59 What a god damn exaggeration... These execs are asked to take a minuscule pay cut to the hundreds of billions in income they make off of the backs of their employees who do all the hard work and labor to make the company's operations possible, so these employees can at least make a living wage to survive, and these execs are like "THEY'RE BURNIN' US AT THE STAKE!!! THEY'RE MAKIN' US LIVE IN COMPLETE DARKNESS!!!". No they're not. They're asking for reasonable treatment, considering how much they're asked to sacrifice at their jobs by these ungrateful execs.

It is crucial to raise awareness that spending money on these companies indirectly supports the mistreatment of employees. Most people would not want to continue doing so if they knew about it, as most individuals do not wish to endorse unethical behaviour.
