Beware of ANY system that uses a roller wheel (as in this video). Roller wheels, no matter how well balanced or engineered, will eventually leave a tell-tale track or groove in the floor. The bigger and heavier the door, the sooner the track appears. Depending on floor type and usage, a door of the size in this video could start showing the roller ball path is just a few weeks. That might not be a problem for an inward swinging door, but for an outward swinging door that's a HUGE problem. I'm in the process of installing my third hidden door/bookcase. My first one had a roller ball and a track showed up within about 6 months. Very frustrating after spending a lot of money and time installing the door. Before I installed door number two I consulted a designer of high-end hidden doors on the west coast. The very first thing he told me was DON'T use roller balls. It's all in the hinge. There are plenty of good hinge systems out there strong enough to not need a roller ball. Thanks to his advice door number two, which I installed over two years ago, is as hidden and unobtrusive as the first day I built it. I'm now building door number three using the same techniques and methods. First and foremost, NO roller balls.
Matt - you continue to amaze me with your craftsmanship and your thirst for knowledge. What i wouldn't give to have a builder of your caliber here in my town!
Thanks for the video! I'd like to use an IKEA Billy bookcase for a secret door. The door would be one bookcase out of four, along an entire wall that are made to look built-in (They won't be going completely to the ceiling, and I'll be adding crown molding to the top of the bookcases). The door has to swing out, because behind it is an under the stairs storage area. Any recommendations for what type of hinges to use and best way to conceal the door?
I love your videos! I currently live in California, and am looking to retire to Texas at the end of my career with my department! I feel that you build fine, quality homes, and would love for you to build my retirement home for my wife and I, but I'm curious, would you build, or remodel, a home in the Arlington area? Just curious! Thanks for all the wonderful information regarding building, and remodeling a home!
+Rich Random I was thinking more like glue and paint, but crayons can really stink. Even if you put them in sealed plastic bags, the smell still seeps out.
Hi Matt - Did all my research love your youtube videos! Putting a bookshelf door for my furnace room it's going to be between 4 feet or 5 ' typical depth 12" give or take typical door height. Like the pivot hinges but having issues finding out what hinge model to purchase. I don't think I need anything over 250 lbs that would be over kill. I will put a few books or pictures or model cars so 200lbs. What pivot hinge would you go for? Plywood makes sense as far as structural integrity but how did you get the paint to be so nice? Thanks in advance
I hate it when I find a non- "THE BUILD SHOW!" video. What do you look for to find the hinges?? Hidden door hinge? I want to do this, I have the perfect spot.
12" deep bookcase is recessed into a 4" wall ? This is a sure giveaway. Bookcase should be extended into room. Also, bookcase needs an electronic latch, not just a magnet. Don't hire this contractor.

Thanks Josh appreciate the heads up👍
Josh Baker if it were up to me, I would choose a large pivot system, if possible.
Yes, but this door opens into the secret room. A mark would still be hidden.
No balls, got it.
What is your Hinge Of Choice, Josh?
I always wanted to be an evil villain with a hidden room where i keep my evil plans hidden.

Thanks Buddy. They are out there... Just not on RUclips. Lots of good Builders in every town

I have question here. Do you where we can get the magnetic system you using for this hidden door? Thank
+Stone Lang That's a basic rare earth magnet. We bought it at our local Ace Hardware store in Austin TX
The geeky reader kid in me loves this idea just because it sounds like the beginning of a great kids adventure!
OMG! Finally a professionally done video I can understand! THANK YOU!
That’s a slick door! Expensive too! But worth it.
Had an Aunt with a big farmhouse that had long narrow passages connecting bedroom closets. For a kid this was unbearably cool.
That's so fucking cool! May I ask roughly where that farmhouse was located?
@@3nertia Western PA. Near Meadville.
@@christheother9088 Exactly where I expect that sort of architecture :D
@@christheother9088 Thank you for replying!
Hi Matt, thanks for sharing this incredible project. I'm wondering what kind of hinges did you use ? what brand and model is it?
I’m need of your help for creating & getting the right stuff for building my stepson a double bookcase door to his room
very cool! much love
Thanks Matt! Means a lot coming from you! Appreciate your videos too. Matt
Can you list the roller that you used and also the hinges? Good looking unit.

Just curious - where did you buy that the hinges featured in this video Matt? Can you list a link for those exact hinges?
Sidenote: if it's an art studio, is IAQ a concern? Smelly art supplies might produce air that you don't want mixing with the other return air?
...Dang! it's off a kids room, not building atomic bombs!..oh wait! I smell Crayons! Call OSHA
+Rich Random I was thinking more like glue and paint, but crayons can really stink. Even if you put them in sealed plastic bags, the smell still seeps out.
Great looking door case, what hinge did you use?
That's a Rixon pivot hinge
+Matt Risinger Thanks. That's that's what I thought, but wanted to check.
