Hey Uncle John. New viewer and soon-to-be soap-maker here. I jus wanted you to know that you are seriously an amazing person, and your soaps seem awesome. I have been doing quite a bi of researching over the last few days, because I would like to start making my own Castile soap at home. Every time I come across a question, one of your super informative videos pops up. You are a Soap Genius, and I really can’t thank you enough for passing on your knowledge. Thanks so so much!
I just ordered a basic started kit to try a few bars. I hope to make and sell soap but we'll see how the adventure unfolds. Thanks for sharing your knowledge !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so kindly Uncle Jon for imparting such knowledge. I feel like you're my 'real' uncle. I think you are awesome with your tips and tricks too. God Bless You.
Very helpful! I like the cheap trash bag idea. Much easier than some videos i watched where they were cutting freezer paper to fit, but that seems to work as well. Aldo like the amazon box method. Now to think about actually doing all this!

It's not quite 5 lbs. The inside measurement is 21 inches long by 3.25 inches wide by 2.5 inches tall. You could get 5 lbs in it but I leave more room than that.
I know this video is kind of old, I hope you still get the message. Question. In the video you say the bottom piece goes in between the sides, unless I can't see it well enough it looks like sides are on top of the bottom piece. Oh I love how you teach your kids the non dightal clock. Amen to that. Thank you.
On the wooden mold? I attached the side pieces to the side of the bottom. I've done it the other way when using different scrap woods before but then I have to cut all the wood to size.
If it is then I used scrap plywood for the bottom and cut it to size. If you're using standard 1x4's then you would screw the sides to the side of the bottom board.
Yes. You can't make soap without lye. The only way to work around this is to buy the premade soap bases that are melt and pour, but then you end up with a completely different product that many times isn't actually soap.
The sides and bottom of my wooden mold? If so, that is basically three 1"x3" boards nailed together to make a trough. Then I cut a couple end caps and hold them on with screws or luggage style latches.
I know this is an older video but I wanted to thank you. Since Im just starting out I couldnt afford to buy molds. I made a couple of these and It only cost me 8.00 . If anyone asks how to make molds I give send them your way.
PS: In the long, thin cardboard soap molds I made, I made a "U"-shaped slider, laid it in the mold, & moved it up as a movable "end" (stood a big bottle of Purell behind it, & added a rubber band behind that). That was HOT process. For the one batch of cold process (had to wrap it) did the same thing, made sure it was all flush, & added rubber bands, & wrapped it!

Hi I'm new to soap making. Can you explain the base oils part... are base oils your fats like coconut oil shea butter, cocoa butter, Palm oil, things like that and does it also include essential oils?
Base oils are just the oils and fats that you originally mentioned. Essential oils and fragrances oils are different. They don't count in your original recipe. The usage rate is calculated by weight. The manufacturer or supplier will have information to tell you how much to use safely.
Hey there, new subscriber! I love the luggage latch idea, never even considered that! Also the 1x4 idea is super easy, I could make this easily myself. I would love to make a slab mold myself. April @BBDS

@@unclejonssoap hi thanks for responding so soon. I went to Amazon and they have so many and my problem is I don't know which size to buy... kind of hard to tell by just looking thanks anyway.
That's a possibility. I need to check material prices and shipping costs. If you like, shoot me an email with your address and how many miles you are possibly looking for and I can figure out a total. unclejonssoap@gmail.com
You would still need to figure out the overall volume by multiplying length x width x height. Then multiply by .40. That gives you your total weight in oils as ounces. Then you can just convert from ounces to grams in the lye calculator or on Google. Hope that helps.
If you use the metric system for your weights do your measurements in centimeters. So for example if your inside measures 10 cm x 10cm x 10 cm you have 1000 cubic cm. 1 cubic cm is equal to 1 ml by volume, which is equal to 1 gram of weight. So the above example mold would be capable of holding a 1000 gram batch. Be sure to always leave a little bit of space at the top of the mold. Then you don't have to fuss with conversions.
That's figured out in your lye/recipe calculator. You're using the weight of your base oils to calculate the volume of your mold. You might need to watch a couple times. It's hard to get your head around the formulas sometimes..lol
You got to measure out water and pour it into your mold to figure out how many ounces (or liters) your mold can hold, then adjust your recipe ratios to fit the mold.
Actually, you can do it with a simple formula that's easier...lol. LxWxH equals cubic inches (or, whatever units you use) Multiply that times .40 and that is the amount of oils in ounces (for US) for your mold size.
Make sure what is white and unscented? Trash bags? The color doesn't matter really as long as you watch for the laser printed information on the plastic you're good to go.

Reena Lobo Basically, it's length times with times height. your answer will be cubed. Once you have the cubic inches figured out you multiply that times .40 to get your base oil weight. You're converting from volume to weight. Also remember that there is water added to the recipe,. so you couldn't do 100% for the base oils or you would overflow the mold. .40 is the way everyone figures up the volume. It really works. 😁

3.25" wide x 2.5" tall x 21" long (all inside dimensions)
