    Let me know if you have any tube suggestions for these as well as if you have ever measured how loud you actually listen on average!

      I "calibrate" my setup using a C weighted sound level meter.
      First with the digital volume control in my HTPC at 100% I use the amplifier's volume knob to set my maximum "neighbour friendly" level to average about 85 DBc. And yes that is plenty loud enough; louder than I care to listen.
      Now with the digital controls, via my wireless keyboard, I set the normal listening level to average about 65db during day time and 50db after 10 pm.
      This is actually automated through a freeware volume manager, so everyone stays happy.
      Additionally my music and movie collections are all curated to the streaming standard of -16 LUFS. So when a new song starts up there's no mad dive for the volume control.

      I really like what you did here, automating it really brings it all together. Setting the max volume up to your desired db is a good idea.

      Thank you. I always try to consider my neighbours and friends in this stuff. It's no fun if you keep ending up with the cops at your door.
      The volume management is through "Volume2" (Volume Squared) which is free and easy to find. I set a couple of automated time of day events and use the win+ keys to do fast sets at 10 through 100% digital volume via the keyboard ... Works well enough and it even gives me control of left and right balance. There are other softwares for this, but to my knowledge none of them work in Windows "Exclusive" (bit exact) mode.
      The files collection is high bit rate MP3 and MP4/AAC files. The normalization is burned right into the files with "MP3Gain" and "AACGain"... It's a bit harder to get these as they are older software but a search does find them a page or two in.
      I use MPC-BE as my player and it has excellent support for all this.
      The really nice thing is that when I'm writing or working on a project, I can start the thing playing at mid-volume, let it run all day on a playlist and it will turn itself down at 10 o'clock each night... because I'm really bad at keeping track of the time.

    Warning....this is addictive. I have the Aiyima T9. Immediately rolled the tubes to GE JAN5654W tubes that smoothed out the sound. I've used various speakers. Bought the Douk VU3 to switch between. Ended up recently getting the Dayton Audio HTA200 because I was curious. The Aiyima/Douk definitely has its own sound. It is impressive for the size/money/features/looks. Hardly a novelty item. Makes listening to music fun! It'll put a smile on your face and a tingle in your ears.

      When I first hooked up my system, my teenage daughter was listening to music with me, and was just enthralled. Needless to say, she has her own system that closely resembles mine. My older son has also recently aquired a headphone setup using the Douk Audio T4 Pro. I highly recommend this phono preamp/headphone amp if using the ST-01 Pro with a turntable to add headphone capability. Add the Wiim Pro Plus and you'll have all the flexibilty one would need.

    Hi there, I’ve purchased one of these amplifiers and a celestion T5910 , 8 inch speaker cone for a radiogram jukebox project. They are still in the mail to arrive , question- can you bi wire from to left and right channels from the amplifier to the single cone speaker, ( I know I should of asked before buying , but too late now ) thanks for your time.

    Is it worth upgrading the power supply? I’m getting some distortion from my vintage Baby ll speakers, not very consistent though, maybe it’s the source, IDK.

    Really tempted to get this one - the only thing holding me back is the lack of a headphone jack. That's sort of a deal-breaker for me. Oh - btw Matt, thanks for mentioning the sub-out is variable. That was a nice touch - but the bonus was clueing us in on the VU meter adjustment on the bottom... Very helpful.

    • @MattCoykendall1
      @MattCoykendall1  11 месяцев назад +1

      A headphone amp would be a good fit here since likely a lot of these are sitting on desks. I noticed people complaining about the VU sensitivity while researching this one so I figured that might help a few out. Thanks for watching!

      Check out the Douk Audio T4 Pro to add a headphone amp along with a phono preamp. Might solve your deal-breaker roadblock. There is enough flexibility with the ST-01 Pro that you can overcome most issues. And I can't go without mentioning a Wiim Pro to round out the system.

    The usb hi res media playback is the only letdown for me. Playing certain Flac files especially Thrash metal bands like Sepultura results in audio cut off on the active speakers. My guess it has to do with the default volume levels of these Flac files and the built in player doesn't auto compensate it. Possibly pairing usb playback with better passive speakers would be a better option.
    Plus it's not really easy to navigate the files without an OSD, you need to memorize all the track numbers which is ridiculous.

    Another great review Matt. It just kills me how these companies rate their output power. Usually at 1kz 10%THD into 4 ohms. It would be unlistenable. I miss the old days as a boomer when they rated power by law at 20-20k into 8 ohms. I bought a Fosi P1 tube preamp to use as a tube buffer and I rolled in some GE 5654 tubes and I can't hear any difference. I have the unit in a tape monitor loop and can switch instantly with a remote control. And I can't tell if I'm listening to the tube unit or not. I do like the glowing tubes though. LOL

    • @MattCoykendall1
      @MattCoykendall1  11 месяцев назад +1

      Power ratings can be difficult and it’s something I do plan to start doing at some point on the channel just to clarify what we read on the spec sheets, give people a clear picture. As long as that glow is bringing you some joy it’s all good.

    Please escuse my chiming in here. I think it's important (well, in my opinion, that is) that more attention should be focused on the actual sound qualities of an amplifier (or whatever audio component). Just saying that "it sounds good" really doesn't tell us anything. Discuss different sound aspects - bass, mids, highs, sound-staging, depth, etc. Because in the end, it's how something sounds that is the end game when it comes to Hi-Fi. A generalized "well, it sounds good," may not necessarily be the case for the next person listening to it. Just a friendly suggestion here.

    • @Douglas_Blake_579
      @Douglas_Blake_579 11 месяцев назад

      The actual truth is that most amplifiers sound alike.
      The details you're requesting make sense for speakers ... but not for the electronics.

    • @MrBenherrmann
      @MrBenherrmann 11 месяцев назад +1

      Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree on the statement that most amplifiers sound the same, as nothing could be further from the truth - i.e. tonal differences between class D, class AB, class A, tubes, hybrid tubes, etc.

      @@Douglas_Blake_579 i can tell you for as someone who uses one pair of speakers and had over 40 amps and receivers they really dont sound the same. vintage pioneers have a nice warm sound (that i like) through my hpm60 speakers where as any marantz, teac or jvc have varying degrees of brightness in comparison.

    • @Douglas_Blake_579
      @Douglas_Blake_579 9 месяцев назад

      @@bufdaman
      That would be attributable to minor variations in frequency response. A lot of vintage gear had a rolled off high end and those with FM receivers had a pretty sharp cut-off at 16khz, because of the stereo pilot signal. Some tube gear actually started rolling off at 8 or 10khz, which would be clearly audible.
      Modern amplifiers generally are far more accurate and don't have these variations in sound.

    A slightly better option - AIYIMA T9 Pro ($135.99). DAC ES9018K2M, PC-USB SA9123L (24bit/192kHz), power supply 32V 5A.

    • @MattCoykendall1

      Yep, good alternative as well. I do wish they would have kept the tone controls on the T9 out of the digital domain though for a little more fine tuning as well as making them accessible without the remote.
