- This video is a review of Tower speakers in the $1100 or less price point, per speaker, in July 2021. These Floor standing speakers have dual 8 inch woofer and dual 6.5 inch as well. Some have 150 watt and 300 watt subwoofers built in. These are speakers for Music and some great for movies as well.
Polk Audio R700 Reserve Series
Definitive Technology BP 9020, 9040 and 9060
Paradigm SE 8000F
Monitor Audio Bronze
Focal Chora 826
Kef Q950
Bowers and Wilkins 603 S2 Anniversary Edition
Definitive BP 7006(not 7006)
I intended to put SVS Ultra Tower in the Mix. The SVS has slightly better midrange than most of the speakers. The SVS tweeter sound is close to the rest. Not quite as sharp as the Definitive Technology towers....closer to Polk Audios. If you would like me to consider reviewing your product please send a email to OldTradesAudio@Hotmail.com. The powered woofers {not subs} are all well and good until the amp goes out which it will eventually. Better off with regular speakers with separate subs that have true 20hz or lower extension.
Like 15 years ago, or whatever its been now that I purchased the Old Definitive Techs(amps still have not broke). I thought the same as you. But then after looking back on my history with a JVC, Yamaha, and Pioneer receivers amps going....A Polk Audio and Klipsch Sub amp going (both were in warranty) ......another polk and acoustic research sub breaking (both out of warranty). And some other equipment I cant rememberhaha. Amps going is part of the game. I love the sound of the 9060 towers, and if the amps go after warranty I can either fix them or then add a sub to each and still enjoy the bipolar sound.
True in most cases, granted they don't make them like they use to, but I have the Infinity Overture 3's from 1998 and have not had one issue with amps. Work like the day I bought them and the sound is so good, I have yet found any that I would replace them with.
There is an old saying, when buying speakers, buy the ones that smashes it in the mids and highs. You can add bass easily but not mids and highs, definitely cant change dispersion and directivity characteristics. In this case, the Focal is the one to get.
Thats true
Agree but then again, buy some good bookshelves instead of a big floorstander that doesn't do bass. I think the R700 is amazing and the focal is bright. So short term it might sound better but it's just too bright and fatiguing.
Is there really an old saying like that? Besides my doubts about that old saying, I agree that the Focals with a sub is the best choice, or for just allround teenage bashing - Polks might be the best choise.
i dont agree at all with that... there are lows that need to be heard through towers... 8inch drivers is ideal on your towers.
@@micheldegroot2063u can turn down treble if too bright😊
The Def Tech 9000 Series in the video are known to have bad amps that go after a while😕
Any speaker with ports or drivers in the rear wold void my lease. Same with those directing downward. My neighbor downstairs has a baby... BTW, my vintage Boston Acoustics T-830s sound ust fine wwith music and movies as my front pair. Found them outside df the Dumpsters at my apartment complex. And the sound stays within the room!
Ergonomía, buen diseño, me imagino un buen sonido, felicitaciones saludos cordiales 🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴
I am in the market for a good set of towers and I really appreciate you taking the time to do this vid. This is really informative and entertaining. You never stop learning in audio there are so many different brands and types of speakers today I get confused easy lol thank you so much
Glad it was helpful!
Yes Good Review@ Newer Speakers, i' Was Looking 4, a 15 - 25 ish Year OLd Infinity Tower Speakers, Today Got 2--Tower & 1-Center Speaker, 4 $110 in Medium + Condition The Speaker Covers Has Some Fading Or a Little DiscoLoration, 50 to 150watt, but the ModeL is 😮unknown Lol... what had:
best 3d imaging?
sparkliest highs?
airiest vocals?
lowest reaching bass?
buttery smooth bass?
thanks!
3d image and Bass, Definitive Tech. Highs and vocals, Focal. Best overall Definitive bp9060
Polk audio ls90's from the 90's are untouchable
Not all woofer drivers are equal. So you cant say a speaker has more or deeper bass because it has 3 woofers vs another speaker that has 2 woofers. The design and size of the woofers and the throw they have can make a bigger difference than the number of woofers.
Thats true.
I love def tech speakers!! I still have my BP20s !!!
Thats a old speaker. Probably a good one though
Good comparison. I have some older paradigm towers with a bipolar array. They were built to compete with the Def Techs in the early 90s. 6.5inch woofers and a 1 inch aluminum tweeter on the front and back. They still sound phenomenal and present a wide and clear sound stage. High hats sound amazing. I'm consistently shocked by their low end extension. They do extremely well under 40hz. I pick up details consistently in the 20 to 35hz range. I wouldn't hesitate to use speakers with the bipolar design again as my main set of towers. Considering newer def tech towers as an upgrade at some point.
Pulling them off the wall a foot or so is a good call too. Coincidentally, I just moved mine out. After a couple years of living and cleaning, they had made their way closer to the wall. Sound is significantly better with them back where they should be.
old and busted up. time to sell
I just bought a pair of Paradigm Mini Ver.2 monitors with bad tweeters. Due to their age,,, the ferofluid dries up in the tweeters and the voice coils separate from the Titanium domes. Lucky me I just found a pair of replacement tweeters. They will sound sweet once more.
The Triangle Borea 9 s would be good in this group $1600 to 1800. Sometimes less. Hope you review them in the future
Phenomenal speakers
from value and performance perspective, it looks like the R700 is a winner
It depends. if someone already has a powerful amp of maybe over 150 watts, and wants a speaker with no amp built in then yes.
I own the r700,r200and r900 they all sound amazing. Love those speakers
Are you pricing these speakers per speaker or for the pair?
Each Speaker
This is why u need measurements when you compare speakers
focal arai 936 vs polk audio r700 comparision who is bettter plz reply urgent i m purchasing very soon
What did you end up buying? Or are you still trying to decide?
So the focal seems to eb the cleanest detailed speaker, it just lacks bass. So a good sub and cross them over at 80Hz would you consider it.
yes
Alo Old Trades, can you please tell me, whats different between the Kef q950 and the Bowers Wilkins 603, against the SVS Prime Pinnacle, what will be the pros and cons of each :)
Thank you!

The best Hifi system !
What receiver will you recommend to go along with R700? Ty
I opted for a pair of the focal 826 with a couple of 15-inch subwoofers. I figure that's the best of all worlds.
Add Dali Oberon 7 and Klipsch 8000F to your list
Interesting review, thanks for doing it all of us. I was kind of hoping you were going to compare the SVS Ultra to the others, especially the Focal because you liked that one for music.
I have a pair of JBL L7s I bought 30 years ago and the tweeters have now fried, and have wave patterns in the foam surrounds. I listen to mostly music, and mostly classic rock, but do touch into some light metal, and jazz. I have a 400 watt Klipsch 12" subwoofer, and run a Harmon Kardon PA2200 amp that puts out 100 watts per channel.
What would you suggest with my current setup and listening habits?
I personally like my Definitive towers for that kind of music with the built in 10 inch woofers. I also have a Klipsh sub as well. The SVS Ultra, Polk Reserve and Definitives are similar sounding
Great Video! I own a pair of Definitive BP8040ST and love it. For movies and music. One of them needs repair. My Aventage receiver gave me a code W-3 and the passive radiator is limp in one tower. Which brand and model of speaker would be a good replacement for me? I would buy it again, but Definitive is not producing them anymore. My receiver is an old model, RX-A2050 and the room is 20’x 20’. Budget is less than 1.000 each. Thank you in advance.
Wow those are old speakers. I also have a pair of the old series(amps are starting to hum after like 15 years or more) and the new ones. The BP9060 from the new series are excellent. Much better midrange and faster sounding treble.
I have a BP9060 everybody keeps saying its s home theater speaker, well ibhave it paired with a cayin tube pre amp sc6ls and a emotiva xpa gen 3, to make it more musical. Would there be a real benefit getting a r700? Is it worth it or just save and get something even better?
I love the bp9060 for music. The R700 is a great sounding speaker but a downgrade
I spent hours in Magnolia comparing speakers with a list of my favorite tracks that I brought in, ran several different amplifiers, and the KEF Q950 won every single time. B&W is so overpriced, and the DefTech was just so unimpressive (not to mention ugly).
Magnolia cannot sell even Klipsch RP-8000F II speakers ( at least in the two locations I visited.. in Los Angeles! I asked explicitly! 12/2023) They cannot even order them... Magnolia used to be a place that could hook you up with anything you asked.. but they have seriously degraded.. Sadly, the only non-in-store places that offer great sound and options in Los Angeles to day seems to be Crutchfield or Amazon! You simply cannot enter a store and hear anything of any substance anymore, in a place that sells quality Speakers... so sad! So... You buy,, and return.. buy... and return... Such a pain in the butt!
B&W paired with Rotel ra 1572mkii or NAD 388 or Musical fidelity m5si or something like Exposure,Caimbridge audio, Primare or Hegel put everything else in the shade……they need power…..without they don’t sing………
Even with Audiolab 6000A they produce huge bass
Thanks for sharing that. It looks like most of those AMPS are warmer sounding as well.
@@OldtradesReviews Yes you are right they need power and warm sounding amps or else sound like old radio
I like the old radio analogy haha...sounds right
I heard this set up and actually liked the q950 with that amp better than the B and W.
The rotel is a fantastic integrated
What is your opinion on the Paradigm monitor 7 v.6 tower speakers? guy selling a pair for $ 300 in great condition near me.
I have not listened to them. With that said I do not trust used speakers. Because if they were played unclean or had power surges who knows what is wring.
The main difference is the brand , that's what u pay for . if you do a blind fold test on these sales men they will fail .
Blind testing speakers are way different than blind testing power amps and dacs. There is nothing to fail in a speaker blind test, its a matter of preference as ALL speakers are not the same, objectively and subjectively. Harman has shown that speakers with wide directivity get chosen more over ones with narrower directivity, hence why all Revel speakers have wide directivity pattern. Majority prefer sound with lots of lateral reflections. In this bunch, the Focals have that exact same characteristic, it holds 60 degrees all the way up to 11khz, in comparison the R700 starts dropping off like a rock at 5500hz at 50 degrees. There is no right or wrong, just preference.
I found the kef q950's for €500 a piece... so 1000 for a pair. Does that make them the best value speakers of this list??
I think any speaker is a good value if you enjoy the sound. If you don't then its a waste of money
A ton missing here. Describe the sound please at the very least.
Each speaker has its own review with sound described
I’m running some 9 year old Polk Tsx330t fronts off an Onkyo TX-NR686 receiver. I don’t have the vocabulary to describe it properly so I’ll just say the effect while listening to streamed music is a little thin(?) at lower volumes. It’s considerably better using CDs but we rarely do that. Would a R700 front setup with my same 100 watt receiver solve anything?
Its possible. The R700 has larger woofers and the down firing port. Its also a 3 way design vs 2 way
@@OldtradesReviews Thank you sir.
how close do you think the 9060s are to their predecessor the 8060s?
I can speak for the older series I have vs the new. The new is better sounding. I find it smoother and more amp friendly, less picky.
Im shopping now. From what Im seeing on the various reviews, Im going with the Polks to match up with the recent purchase of the Marantz SR6015.
Thank you for the info.!
Your welcome
Just LOVE your Yankee accent...LOL!
Thank you
Focal all the way. I own 726’s. The detail and clarity is stunning. The Bass is plenty for me. I’ll never sell them.

Hello, what Paradigm model are you comparing in this video?
How would you rate Sound Dynamics R616 tower speakers...they were made in canada...i cant find much info on these...i bought them about 15 yrs ago from a pawn shop for 150$ and replaced the blown tweeters with brand new original equip. in original sealed boxes from italy oddly enough for 65 euros back then. I think they sound amazing really but i would like to know more about were they stand in quality both today and back whenever they might have been made. sincere thanks to anyone who might have any info on these speakers. simply reply please and thank you!!!
The Monolith Encore T6 would fit in that group very well!
I'm looking at the mission zx5 focal aria 926 kef Q950 speaker, which one do you think will be the most musical, I'm grateful in advance, I trust your opinion and at the moment it's a difficult choice for me
I have tried to like the DT's. But every time I listened to them they sounded muffled in a way.
Do you have a receiver you recommend for the 9060? I heard about issues with the amps which I'm nervous about but really love the speakers
The 9060 is great sounding speaker. I really enjoy it with the marantz sr7013. I also enjoyed it with the Denon 125 watt x 2 version...but it was less warm sounding.
Hi i got BP9060, and honest love them, but now im looking at polk r700, do you think its worth buying the polk? Or is it worth changing my 5 yr old bp9060 to r700?
Its true, mine went bad both, but sounds better without and more solid imaging, also highs smoothen out, I guess less vibration on floor wich affects power amp and pre amp, now better isolation from vibration on floor
Would it be wise adding a pair of towers to a set which already has a pre-existing subwoofer
Thanks for the comparison!
Which would be best overall with the addition of multiple subs for a 50/50 music/HT setup?
I love the Definitive Tech 9060s overall.
wrong amps to properly judge these speakers full potential
What amps do you prefer? I agree not the full potential. That would require 150-300 watt amps and many different brands as each manufactures will have its own tonal qualities. With that said the 120/125 watt power from 2 different brands, the speakers received is more than most people will feed them. Which makes the test great for the mainstream customer.
@@OldtradesReviews Amp and speaker match is very important.
Receivers do not do the justice to quality speakers , these floorstanders love power , you could experiment with NAD or Rotel for easy to buy amp but if you try more polished and high performance amps from say John Hillig at Musical Concepts /Musical Design you will hear how much more control, drive at low distortion along with wonderful soundstage and amazing harmonics and details some of these can reproduce. John sells some of his moded amps with his PA7 control boards and MOSFET transistors can be bought for around 1200usd , it is a steal of an amp, true high end at low fi price.
Than good Preamp , DAC and transport either streamer like Ifi Zen or quality CD transport will all make a difference.
It would be totally different soundscape over the receivers ...
That's all true. Thanks for the suggestions and recommendations. Its very hard to pair components. What might be great match for some equipment will be a bad match for others. Kind of mind blowing at times
@@OldtradesReviews Absolutely, that's where 30 test drive comes to play.
Synergy is a key for getting all or most out of your investment.
Have fun with it ....
Great comparison; wonder what you would think of the klipsch 8000fs
I personally do not like the horn tweeters. I have tried several from Klipsch over the years. My ears and either soft dome or metal tweeters are better
The Klipsch 8000 Rp sports a dome Twitter encased on a horn shape presentation to my experience and as a musician this speaker sounds amazing
The new klipsch rp 8000f and rp 8000f ll's don't sound like how klipsch use to sound it's overall a more flat speaker and can often times find them for $625 usd they are pretty nice a pleasant the b&w 603 s2 anniversary are way more bright then the older cheaper klipsch it's so overly bright that it makes even the overly bright klipsch seem a little flat and they don't take well to eq like the klipsch does I personally like klipsch kef b&w 800 series and up focal and I've been wanting to hear the polk reserve I heard they are really good
That's awesome relaxing video. Thanks))

Hi. A very old line of platys. They been breading for 10 years or more. Also some amano shrimp. Nerite, trumpet, Ramshorn snails. Do you have as well?
@@OldtradesReviews - a nice little selection you have. Thanks for the update! I have kept salt and fresh aquariums but only 1 fresh tank left. A lot of corys and clown loaches
Fluance Reference XL8F
I have never listened to those. What kind of amplification do you use with them?
Informative video. I’m in the market for tower speaks and an avr for my bedroom so I’m going through a lot of your videos again. I’m looking for two channel only and basically surround sound or center channel additions aren’t important to me. My goal is to maximize music listening quality and just want the ability to run my tv and Uhd Blu-ray player and ps5 through the speakers. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories of issues with arc/earc which is why I’m going the avr receiver route instead of an integrated amp with arc/earc support. You mentioned the focal 826 being weak on bass. Is that from a movie cinema standpoint or for music as well? I want good bass performance as I will be listening to industrial, hard rock and electronic music primarily in this space and don’t want to add a sun. The focals are on sale now for 699.00 so it would be a really good deal.
Gana Kef, por lejos!!!!!
Will you do a comparison between the Bowers and Wilkins 603 s2 Anniversary Edition tower speakers & their 704 s2 Anniversary Edition tower speakers?
There are no such reviews on RUclips.
Also There, There are not even any reviews of the 704 S2's.
I'm sure av enthusiasts would like to know your thoughts about these newish midline B&W 700 series tower speakers.
Tjx
Those two speakers are in a completely different range from eachother, that is why you aren't seeing a comparison. The 704 S3 is $4,999/pair Canadian, and the 603 S2 are $2,999.
The reviews you will find, are on the 704 S3's...not the S2.
Out of the bunch, Id go with the Focals. Check out their factory tour video and youll get why their the best pick.
My next speaker!
I really appreciate engineering, and once I learned how well engineered Focals were, it was my goal to own some one day.
A few years ago, I got a deal for a pair of like new Focal Chorus 726 and I love them. They look so classy with the grill on and so awesome with the grills off where you can see the drivers. The nice leather, the polyglass drivers, the exposed curved cabinets from the front... You can see maybe 2in of the white cabinet from the front.
I don't have much money so these are my prized possession.
I would be interested to know how my old B&W DM620 floor standers sound against the new range, would be an interesting video.
Gets the shit kicked out of it in terms of bass
Great 🔊 breakdown.
Glad you liked it!
Coming from a high end Headphone setup with Susvara & Abyss 1266 - To my ears Focal 826 trumped most of the speakers under $2500k / per pair . This is based on sound clarity, quality and detailed and separation quality .
Very musical & more accurate- to my ears.
Add a $500 subwoofer and it’s one of the most phenomenal setups.
Wow thats some headphone setup. Thanks for sharing that into and comparison.
@@OldtradesReviews Mate your channel and simple comparisons are so easy to grasp and near accurate . It’s not easy for us to find all the speakers here in Sydney as you have in US . Your comparisons really helped me.
Especially the part where u say Focal vs BW , Focals are not sharp or fatiguing whereas BW can be… absolutely correct tried them side by side with exact concurrence.
Thanks mate for your reviews
Thanks for the kind words and watching. I appreciate that. I try to make them comprehensive and not speak to fast.
The watts of a amp are not that important. The current it delivers much more. Also the dempingsfactor
Those are good points.
The definitives seem like a good choice but what if the amp goes out? I tend to buy towers & use them for years, many many years :)
It has a warranty for a few years. My old ones have not broke and they are like 13 years old or maybe more now....with that said I have had many subs, from various brands, over the years only last a few years then the amp broke....
If the amp on the definitive break a separate sub could always be crossed over and the definitive would function with its multiple tweeters and midrange drivers
@@OldtradesReviews my amp went out after 3 months and DT wants me to ship it to them on my dime for $150 or so each way and could take 2-3 months to get back
That does not make sense. The warranty covers it all if its brand new. Sounds like a old model that needs to go back for repair. And sent back. Because new models cost $0
parts-express...if out of warranty, P-E has plate amps. not sure if they are a direct fit, but it's an option...
Heard of HECO. Aurora 1000 is the way to go.
Thanks for sharing that. I am interested in those. Big frequency response range
I own them, apart from the fact that I don't have much to compare, I still love them after 2 years of ownership! If they're at the right spot, I have great frequency response, awesome Sound stage, and they dig down deep enough to make an sub obsolete for most cases.
I drive them with a Emotiva A-300, hocked to a Denon x4700h
I have heard some of these at the same time and didn't like the Kef all that much until I hooked it to a Rotel integrated.
That combo surpassed anything I mixed with the B&W (including the two models up) and the Def Tech you went over here.
The Rotel was a 1572 with the Kef q950 is definitely the way to go between these choices.
Rotel makes nice amps. Thanks for sharing that match.
Great review! May I know how the R700 compare to the Monitor audio Silver 500? Thank you.
The monitor would be brighter or crisper sounding
Focal for meeee !!!!!
Thanks for the recommendation on the def tech 9060s, would you recommend the Atmos add-on for those? I'm building my first home theater and don't want to buy an amp. I was thinking of getting 4 9060s with the Atmos add-on. What center channel speaker do you recommend for mostly movies. I noticed you're really not a fan of any of the def tech centers. Please let me know which would be best.
Thanks for watching. The 9060s are fantastic. The Atmos add on is ok, but like most of those add ons that fire toward the ceiling, it may or may not produce good results. I did notice that the lower volume sounds that come out of the top mount atmos speakers tend to get lost. Vs if you can mount speakers high on the wall or put some on top of a 6ft high bookshelf (better choices). ruclips.net/video/x8rdbAAFbDo/видео.html If not using amps try to get the highest power receiver 125 watt x 2 into 8 ohms, or a receiver that guarantees the power like, Marantz, x 5 or more channels. Also make sure the receiver has pre-amp outputs for added flexibility of adding a future amp (sometimes we change our minds) . Speakers sound different with 90 watts vs 150. I settled on the SVS Ultra center. It has clear vocals and a strong sound stage and impact, Blends well with the 9060s
@@OldtradesReviews thank you for your honesty and advice. I have the Denon 4300 which is 125 watts per channel. I'll add svs ultra center to my list for center. I want the best front stage I can get for the money.
Have you heard the Klipsch RC 64III yet if so what are you thoughts?
Would svs ultra towers be better than def tech?
Which height speakers do you recommended?
Which rears do you recommend?
That Denon is a good one and can be expanded upon with the preamp outs. My ears and horn tweeters do not mix. I have found them to harsh, but have tried a few Klipsch over the years. Never worked out. Also the horn tweeters can be very angle specific...needing to be toed in just right. That peticular one with 4, 6 inch woofers would need a amp.
SVS towers would be different. You would lose the 9060 bipolar rear drivers that make for a wide deep front soundstage, also the 300 watt amp to the 10 inch woofers. So in my opinion any other speaker that is non powered would need a amp. The Denon may be putting out 70 watts a channel when its in multichannel mode. The more speakers it needs to power the less they will get. Tell me more about the setup. Will it be 7.1.2? 5.1.4? That will change the surround and height speaker recommendations. 7.1 is always better to build off than 5.1
@@OldtradesReviews
You make really good points about the speakers and will stick with the 9060s. Did you experience the pop issue people complained about?
goal is to build a mean 5.2.4 setup that will last. I've read to save up and put most of the funds towards great speakers since they last the longest and tech doesn't change that often over time.
Subs: I'm leaning towards the new monoprice 13 thx
If I do get an amp down the road it will be the monoprice amp probably
Content: movies/tv shows(Netflix and Plex) later on once gpy prices FINALLY drop I'll build a new Plex server in house for 4k blu-ray movie streaming
All of these speakers have internal xover components that leave a lot to be desired. Cheap xover components make the companies the higher margins. Even adding a small sonicap in parallel with the stock caps will improve them, but you get what you pay for.
Amazing! Not one model I'm interested in.
Which ones are you interested in?
Focal❤❤
You've already sold me on the R700 but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'm still planning to personally audition the BP9080x and D17 from Def Tech, and maybe the Dali Opticon 8. Lots of choices to pick from these days. Thanks for the informative reviews.
You can’t go wrong with the R700’s. Bought mine 2 months ago and hands down the best overall for the price and can outperform competitors at twice the price.
The 9080 is a great speaker but I own the bp9060 and love it! Thanks for watching.
@@jacqueslombard6487 Do you find yourself needing a sub?
@@OldtradesReviews As I'm a metalhead like you, which one would you pick between the BP9060 and the R700? The BP series looks deceptively slim and have smaller drivers
For movies a sub is always a great idea even with the 9060. The amount of bass that pounds through the 9060 during movies as a front L/R speaker is amazing. I would not want to add the point 1 channel to it as well....thats overload.
