    I purchased from an Importer in Washington Last year. Told me the Evo Was Clean. And wasn't Purchased at auction so they Didn't have auction sheets.
    I Later Ran a VIN Check once I received the car. I Found out they actually had purchased from an auction and the Vehicle had been in an accident. They Basically put Band-aids on the car to fix issues. I'm about $6-7k into fixing this "Clean" Evo and have only been able to drive it for 4 months out of the year that I've owned it.
    Really need to do research on importers. I got screwed over by one of the higher rated ones.

    i bought a car from a dealer here in the states. i never got the auction sheet and always thought it was an R grade. Turns out it was a 3.5 and all of the damage and issues was listed on the auction sheet that it had when i bought it. so they didnt try to cover anything up. i found www.carvx.jp which i paid $35 and they found the auction picutures, sheet and some history of the car. So could be a great tool for people in the states.

    I'm mad that you have to make this video. These armchair specialists need to get real and realize it doesn't cost five dollars to get a car from Japan to the states. Export costs, shipping, import costs, and state taxes are all large factors that make a simple car purchase cost a few thousand more. And then there's all these "experts" making youtube videos on how to import cars when they've never seen a port lmao. Honestly after seeing that stock GTO, I like yours much better. That wing and front bumper looks much better and the stock rims are so ugly.

    I don't comment too often but as I've said before both publicly and via your Facebook or DM's... Your channel is one of my absolute favourites. From finding you exploring Japan, Sharing your experiences and your interest in your GTR i very soon appreciated your demeanour, Your honesty and relaxed vibe. It was and still is very therapeutic. Fast forward to you leaving the military and joining Garage Defend and everything good about you and your channel is resonating with your new venture. Long story short just keep being you. You documenting the whole process is a huge peace of mind to potential buyers. There will always be people that want vehicles at bottom prices. They go by poor examples and multi owner no history cars. They buy dogs and they're never happy. A fine example of a car will always be worth more to the right person. The right owners will come forward once the trolls get bored. The rising prices in Japan and demand around the world i don't think is quite resonating in the US yet. You have huge excitement given the 25 year rule, But it's shadowed by some bitterness regarding prices. Thanks for all the awesome content and transparency. You're doing a great job in my book. i'm from canada. many years ago when the r32 gtr was legal, local importers suddenly started popping up everywhere. i went with one who claimed theirs was mint no accidents and when it arrived it looked great and I was all starry eyed. but i had it inspected and the mechanic shop that did it red flagged it as accident vehicle because there were telltale signs the right front apron was replaced. i posted it up on a jdm message board and another importer in australia pulled the auction sheet for the car and sure enough it was R grade. i went back to the importer and they denied it to my face until i pulled the auction sheet and told them i was on the jdm message board, and they gave me the deposit back. several months later they went out of business and that gtr showed up at a used car lot where it eventually sold and i never saw it again... long story short buyer beware.

    Also, I think Spencer didn't mention it seemed to be that the original plan when he bought that 180 was it was for his own car anyway but somewhere along the line it became beginning stock for his business.
    That was literally on video when he was shopping and buying. I think you can be sure it's not junk he's trying to pawn off. I don't think anyone was saying it doesn't drive straight or anything. (And yaknow, if it wasn't, more RUclips content about fixing that.)
    As for the GTO I was kinda fairly challenged about 'well, would *you* pay that for that, ' and I wasn't so sure. I only *heard* the JDM ones were good. I dunno if I'd even like it. On paper, I should, but I'd have to see, but maybe I'd be happier seeing if those Garage Defend guys could find me a decent like RA25 Celica. (Cause I know there's a happy place for me there, I used to have the American version. I love those. It's like a Boss Mustang and a Kenmeri Skyline had hatchback babies. People were always like, "Yeah, they were really pandering to Americans with those GT Liftbacks. ' I'm like, "That's only a problem if it didn't *work.* :) )
    And I guess that's the answer there, where the love is. And, you know, a lot of these cars so desired now, they used to be things people were practically giving away, now not so much, especially given 'drift tax,' people stancing the things for some reason, and attrition. I guess there's 'JDM Legends' and there's 'Do you even actually like that for what it is?' I guess, maybe drive it. That's what I'd do regarding that GTO, I'd actually see if it's inspiring or just reminds me of Dodge Stealths and disappointment. :)
    The 180'd be almost a no-brainer for me. I could picture myself looking between that and a newish BRZ or something. I'd be looking at the BRZ like 'Why aren't you a hatchback.' All right, let's make this fair, gimme the keys. Wait, what do you mean there's no keyhole? (I dunno if that's actually the case, but it seems to be a pattern.) Probably twenty minutes later I'd be driving from the wrong side for local roads and being like, 'Well, this is inconvenient but at least my throttle cable isn't voodoo." :)
    (I'm kinda turning into an old lady, but that means I've been around computers long enough that I know they invariably get worse at what they were originally supposed to be doing no matter how much more processing power you give them.

    Mileage is not recorded in the US on JDM or any imported vehicles. US vehicles older than 10 years old in many states not record mileage. Canadian vehicles brought into the US also not have mileage as there in kilometers & US titles does not put kilometers on them but will have *EXEMPT in mileage box. Have to keep in mind that the asterisk doesn't tell whether or not the speedometer was "officially changed" from the 180kph to a 300kph or whatever speedo for example... If not done by a certified shop here, any type of modification of the cluster will void the certified mileage thing. For example my 12a-turbo SA22C has an original documented 98000km on the clock BUT... with the RE-Amemiya 11000rpm tachometer and the 260kph speedo, it would not be considered original and would get an asterisk if sent to auction. Simply because it wasn't done "officially"...

      6 years ago all the above were regularly going for £9-15000 and the prices were dropping drastically year after year, until they became U. S. legal. this I why it's price jacking, none of the cars are worth anywhere near the prices they go for at auction.

    Yesterdays prices aren't todays... supply and demand. more people are able to afford these cars and there are only a fixed amount in what most would considered appreciable condition. Naturally they will continue to go up in price, ask what you think is fit in todays market. ez

    Just ask for the auction sheet copy. Simply as that. And ask for the sold auction sheet price too. I show my customers all this so they know exactly how much the car sold for on auctions.

    I'll give my take on this. I've imported a car through an importer and imported one myself. Buying from a US importer you pay more because they have overhead, bills, employees etc. They also pay all your fees, title it, do some basic maintenance and detail it. You pay for peace of mind. Importing yourself saves you money usually thousands but it's on you to deal with everything. It's a lot to deal with. My advice, if you wait until a car is legal to import you're screwing yourself on the price, if you wait until an importer in the US has it for sale you're really screwing yourself on price. You want a fair price on a car? For a "desirable" JDM car you have to buy 1-2 years in advance. You want an R34 GT-R? You're too late

    Isn’t “R grade” similar to a car with a salvaged title in the States?

    • @fabulousprofound
      @fabulousprofound 4 года назад +2

      Kevo Kirby not necessarily. Just has to be some kind of repair work significant enough to be noticed, or it can be heavily modified to the point major body components had been replaced (eg. widebody conversion)

    • @YourCarBro
      @YourCarBro  4 года назад +1

      Not at all. “Salvaged title” type cars are sold at different parts of the auction house and usually don’t have a rating at all. Like mentioned in the other comment here even a heavier modified car can be given an R grade. Really it can be as simple as a small repair on a body panel like in my case.
