I’m amazed no one else pointed out the fact that this man can fly lord knows how fast, and yet he chose to walk up the mountain. That in itself speaks volumes.

He’s holding every ounce of guilt for every person that he couldn’t save. He’s feeling guilty because he couldn’t save the people in the capitol and because now the world sees him as partially responsible even though they know Lex was responsible. He’s also feeling like there’s no one in the world who can help him, which is why Jonathan said “she was my world.” That’s what helped Clark come to terms with the fact that Lois has been standing there right beside him, helping him, loving him, and that she is his only link to the world.

The mountain is where people come to die; Clarke saw something that no other living person could see.

That's a metaphor for what's to come. One of the themes of BvS was death.
Yep. Death is at first something that is an end. "What falls is fallen." But then, death becomes something else by the end of the movie. Something that can heal. Something that can birth new life elsewhere. Truly brilliant.

@@barathnatarajan8566 Because in the comics, Superman being seen as godlike and some savior parallels the story of Jesus. Jesus prays that death pass him over in His low point but later accepts that death is something that must happen. After that moment is when Jesus is betrayed and later crucified. So people are drawing the parallels. Might be coincidental and even a stretch to some but art speaks differently to people.
This is one of the most beautiful scenes I have seen in any comicbook movie.

Fuck, dude. The amount of love Jonathan and Martha Kent felt for Clark really hits home every time I see scenes with them, you can practically feel it. It reminds me of my parents and I start to tear up. I don't think any portrayal of superhero parents will ever top these two, they're the most realistic and loving I've ever seen.

This scene encompasses everything that Snyder's Superman is about. He doesn't see himself as a god (even though everyone else does) and he's aware of the limitations of his powers. He knows that he can't save everyone all the time but people expect him to. He's not afraid to examine his failings and they trouble him.
A lot of viewers wanted some perfect Superman that can save everyone all the time and isn't bothered or doesn't acknowledge any failings. They want their Superman to eat his hero cake and ignore the wailing of the drowning horses.
Exactly. The best Superman stories always focus on how his choices affect the world around him and how no matter how powerful he is he can't save everyone at once.

In their mind, Superman is a perfect hero, and hero almost never let other people down.
And Superman is already overpowered, so they thought Supes can do anything perfectly while the movie actually trying to proof that even a "God" has flaws.
Plus cant Superman hear the world or close to it? He does have the super hearing, maybe Jonathan's tale of the horses drowing is what Clark is dealing with, he hears the world's crys for help but he can't help them all.
@@valyrian1124 Snyder said there are flashbacks in JL, and in one of them, before Clark goes to talk to Bruce on the roof, Clark listens to the world looking for his mother, and realizes there are too many crimes going on in Metropolis and Gotham, and because of that he says later to Bruce "You don't understand! There's no time!"

TinnedWaffles This scene is actually deeper than it looks. In this scene, we get to dive into Clark's mind a little bit and how he wishes his dad were there to give him words of inspiration/advice. It is logical because Clark is actually struggling with how to become the man he wants to be. Therefore, him imagining his pops for advice makes sense. We all wish and imagine when things go down at some point in our lifetime.
This scene is pure GOLD. I never liked Superman until now with Henry Cavill, not even Christopher Reeve, a personal taste perhaps. The acting on this piece of the film and the music, feels so real, like if you really miss your dad and vice versa. Amazing.

That's one thing In my opinion Jesus like perfectionist that superman became during the silver age and thus in part the reeve version forgot, that sometimes you can't fix it, sometimes you can't save all the people you're attempting to help(not just in a global sense but in a small-scale sense) and sometimes you can't take back an emotional bad call. Superman is still a man, I feel like writers only want to focus on the good parts of being a human and not those imperfections

I’ve always loved Superman. I loved Christopher Reeve’s Superman. Superman is bright and uplifting. I believe Henry Cavill’s superman will become the classic big blue Boy Scout I know but it will take time for his superman to evolve into that. I’m glad Cavill is still superman.

Yet take a look at what has happened in Iraq, democracy has failed, civil war, unrest , death and devastation. So that's what he meant by that comment. By far the most compelling Superman ever brought to the big screen. Also, I wonder if this was some foreshadowing to the Fortress of Solitude, which is located in the Arctic and where he goes when he needs to recount his thoughts and deal with his emotions...
I thought we already saw the Fortress of Solitude in Man of Steel.
The scout ship? It's destined to become the Fortress, but it isn't yet. Like Superman himself, it's going through a story of it's own. Superman thought he completely destroyed the ship in MOS. In BVS, though damaged, it is still operational and capable of horrible outcomes. Hopefully by JL, as part of Superman's story, he'll retrieve the ship and turn it into the Fortress of Solitude to use as his own base of operations and to keep it out of the hands of the humans. The Fortress, like Superman, wasn't completely absolute. But it will be soon...
I kinda think he was dragging that ship to the place he wanted it to be. He was probably gonna use the Genesis chamber to materialize the ship. Into a fortress of solitude, but I could be wrong. Can anyone correct me?

"He's come to die" that line I think is meant to tell us that Kal-el was this close to letting the dream of superman die. God, I love how this scene gives you a comprehensive exposition on what it would mean to be a superhero by giving us a very mortal example of heroism as a comparison: even if you saved people, you would never be able to avoid some kind of collateral damage. The question then becomes, should you try anyway, even knowing that nothing you can do, however altruistic, will be harmless? And Bruce making his final emotional preparations for what might just be the last thing he ever does amidst the ruins of his parents' old manor just sums up his character so well and sets the coming fight up so well, ugh, I love this movie!
This scene could also be interpreted as his death being foreshadowed, because it’s said people see the dead before their time comes

Jonathan saying to clark that he can do the right things by saving people making great choices but bad things will happen...thats why he was telling the story that he help save the farm but bad things still happen.....no matter how good things he does for the world people will judge or hate him

But the problem with this lesson is that none of the bad things that happened in this film were Clark's fault. They only happened because Lex wanted them to. And, ok, Clark didn't know that Lex was behind things like the incident in Africa, but it's still a copout that he was at all. The film should've focused instead on the Battle of Metropolis because the damage in it actually was partially his fault, but it's barely referenced after the opening of the movie.
huntcd2012 Superman failed to save those people in Africa and he failed to stop the capitol bombing, regardless of whether or not Lex was the perpetrator of those acts. Lex made Superman feel like he couldn't save anybody, and that he had no right to be Superman. He failed at saving those people, but the vision is to remind Superman that he is not a failure as long as he has people who love him, and because he doesn't give up.
Superman saved Zod from taking over the world but everyone hates him for the damage done to metropolis. Plus plenty of viewers still complain about all the damage done in the final fight, even though that kind of damage is bound to happen when two super-powered people fight in a crowded city. The world becomes a china shop.
Watched this with my mom 2 weeks ago. She HATES superhero and fantasy/sci-fi movies and has never read a comic book in her life and even SHE loved it. I think that says it all about BvS when it comes to its storytelling and characters.

My mother died in a car accident when I was much younger, it was later in my teenage years did I start to feel the regret of not knowing her, and how she did great things in her life. I wish she was the one raising me in my current point in life. One night I had a dream very much like this one, speaking to her with us ending in we miss each other. I hope one day I can forgive myself with the the regret that I never was able to tell her I loved her.

This is probably my favorite scene of the movie. When Clark says: “Did the nightmares ever stop?”, that shows the incredible guilt he feels for not being able to save everyone. Jonathan’s words are inspiring too. We shouldn’t ignore the screaming horses of our society( the people that need help the most). We shouldn’t just sit down and pretend everything’s good. We have to do what we can with what we have.

This scene (when I viewed this in the theaters with the 3-D glasses) touched me of how he speaks to his dad and how at the end of the conversation between himself and his father where his dad states "I miss you son." I miss you too dad." That put tears in my eyes while I was viewing this while wearing the 3-D glasses because my dad recently passed away an he was a superhero film fan like me,his favorite character in comics are two-SHAZAMM and SUPERMANNN! Luv you pop always!

After all this years I finally realize, this is a "Third Man Syndrome". All those people who climb mountains experience this event where they meet someone who will give them advice to make their life better. OMG he also talking to his father, so good.
If only Warner Bros. hadn't changed the overall tone with Justice League (I didn't see the whole movie, but I watched some scenes on RUclips). The tone in Man Of Steel, BvS, and Wonder Woman fit perfectly. They stood out from the Marvel films (which are doing well with the lighter tones). They should have stayed the course...

They spent way too much time rifling through internet comment sections trying to gauge what ppl were hating on, never realizing that the ppl doing the hating never had any intention of seeing or liking the films anyways. They WEREN'T WB's audience. So they changed the formula to suit an audience that didn't exist. It was a HUGE blunder, and the reason why a filmmakers vision should always trump the vocal minority.

While it would've been cool to see Jor-El, nobody plays a realistic father like Kevin Costner does with Jonathan Kent. He just has that down to earth, working class dad vibe that a lot of us grew up with. Very relatable.
The fact that Snyder is such a strong advocate of mental health, that he put a suicide reference in this scene was very touching. Because yes, Clark was feeling of sorts. The world was literally against him.
and this was filmed before his daughter died of suicide shockingly.
Basically the story Jonathan is telling Clark is that while he prevented the flood from destroying the farm, his actions still caused destruction to others.
It’s supposed to mirror Superman.
Like Superman, no matter how hard he tries to save people, others will still die indirectly cause of his heroic actions no matter what.
This proves that the glasses are not the only part of Superman's disguise. No one recognized him here because he was dressed as a human.
Henry Cavill also proved this when he sat in Times Square with a Superman shirt in broad daylight. Not a single person recognized him...

@@eskanda3434 It is a MoS sequel in that it deals with the repercussions of Superman's introduction to the world. Particularly the revelation of superpowers, which raises the metahuman question and the discovery of beings with superpowers who would eventually form the JL in Superman's absence. Lex Luthor here is in keeping with the mad scientist origins of the character and most resembles the version in the Superman: Birthright comic which BvS clearly adapts Luthor from. Those criticisms don't keep the movie from being considered a masterpiece.

Man I'm so fucking heartbroken that Zack Snyder would not be a part of DCEU anymore, it's so disturbing. He made some incredible films in the DCEU and his absence will be sorely missed. I'll never be able to watch another CBM with the same hope and optimism ever again.

So this is two years later (and I hope you’re doing well) but I just wanted to comment that a lot of counsellors recommend imagining that you can talk to the person who you want to talk to. A lot of times when people die, we’re unable to say things to them that we otherwise would have wanted to. By faking a conversation from your side, you can get it off your side.
It sounds dumb but I was told to try it when my mom and sister died.

Man this scene made cry... ever since man of steel, I loved Jonathan portrait like a father who loves his son so much and he was willing to give his life for him like in MoS and I know a few fans hates the 'maybe' line but you got realize that Clark was a young boy when that happen he had choose the right thing that's our lives in general its build by choices and this scene is beautiful because it shows a father's love never dies. It plays like a soul search for Clark that he needs that drive to keep going to be the hero that he was meant to be and the 'horses' line is symmetry because in the beginning of the movie you see a horse in the dust of Wayne Building that fallen and another one at the Senate meeting when Lex blows it up and ones at Clark's funeral its not easy being a hero for the world that's Clark's arc of the movie. I get more each time I watch it this scene makes me cry .. a lot i know I said earlier but its true..

Sometimes we appreciate what we have lost when we no longer look at others. Zack Snyder went his own way in creating.
It's not realistic for Superman to become a symbol of hope, or have his boy scout self from day one. To truly get that character, he would need to self reflect and find something he truly believes in, something that will be worth protecting, something he would cherish.
These movies attempt to show this transition, from a confused person gifted with great power to a being who is truly a force for good.
this is literally the definition of zack snyder’s superman and we’ll see more in #thesnydercut
Scenes like this are something you'll never find in a Marvel movie.
If it was in a marvel movie, they'd ruin it with some joke. Like the dad starts talking, then the son says "hold up, wait before we start talking because that was a long walk up that mountain"

When clark tells lois "you are my world" before stabbing doomsday..this is an indication that he started having faith in the world.. such a powerful and crucial scene.. therefore i strongly believe zs was building up Supermans character towards the classic positive personality
Zack confirmed that he was leaning into that point, but WB wanted nothing to do with him, and that’s sad. ZSJL was the beginning of Superman becoming that more confident and optimistic Superman, but again - WB. Sorry that I’m 3 years too late

Lost my father less than 2 months ago. Watching this scene as a son who just lost a father especially and faced tough times, I feel so much for Clark.

Nice parallel, but I don't think Zack got it from Smallville. He told him similar things in MOS, though mostly when he was still young. Also, in the comics, Jonathan gives him similar wisdom on occasion and Zack only seems to have care for the comics versions of the characters. He's said in many interviews that other media incarnations of Superman mean nothing to him...
In this case he certainly could learn and take a few tips from the Smallville's relationship between Clark and Jonathan
I was wating for a pa kent quote like "works keeps a man honest clark" (like in smallville)...this scene is one the many reasons I don't get why all the critics talk about superman being not developed. BvS has two big mistakes, one is jesse eisenberg being cas as lex luthor and the other mistake is WB studios because the extended cut should have been the movie to show in the theaters and not the other very poor edited version...if they would have cast someone like dicaprio or fassbender (young but rough and Cynic), audiences and critics would have liked the movie a lot, and they would even forgive the "martha moment"...eisenberg ruined the magnificent expierence that should have been. The rest of the movie is fucking perfect. Batfleck is great, the fight scenes are a wonderful, the first scene of batman is the best take on the character ever to put in a screen, because they made it look like a creature of the night just like in some of the best comics. Superman is 95% right, I would have loved to see a damn smile to the public like in the day of the dead scene. But his arc is great and a sweet journey. And they should have made room for a speech of him in the capitol (missed chance).

I loved 40’s animated Superman for enjoyment. But I’ve always wanted a Superman where I can feel deeply connected with him on a personal level, and Zack gave me just that.
What is great is how this scene transitions to Bruce also walking to see his father in his parent’s mausoleum. Two men, both good guy/heroes, both in their own pain, both contemplating their place in the world. Superman, the god trying to do right but always suffering for it; Bruce Wayne, doubting that his vigilante career has done any good and seeking to leave a meaningful legacy. Fuck anyone that criticizes these parallels as surface level symbolism. It’s a 3 hour comic book movie, not a 16 hour miniseries or 800 page novel/treatise on the philosophy of life. Surface level is good enough

The pure dynamic relationship that Clark and his father had, when Clark was going through all of his adolescence, and resenting his father, saying he's not his real dad, even though they raised him as his own......and when Clark tried to rescue his dad, and his dad stopped him.....every time I watch this scene, it makes me ball my eyes out, because Clark regrets all of the things he said to his dad.
You will not notice such golden epic scenes of such in-depth emotion & essence in any MCU movie .Man of Steel ,BVS ,DC 4 LIFE ☺️

Arguably one of the best depictions of father & son in the movies.
I was 13 when man of steel came out, I had been going through a really traumatic time in my life, I didn't understand what was happening to me both physically and more importantly mentally. but one thing that never changed was my dad and I's obsession with going to see movies, no matter what state I was in. so it was a given being the superhero nerds we are that we would see that film. Keep in mind mentally I was practically shattered and trying to piece together who I was and wanted to be moving forward and the relationship between Clark and his dad brought tears to my eyes on multiple occasions. And I walked out loving the film. It has a LOT OF FAULTS and I'm not going to say it was some sort of perfect film. the reasons I loved it was very personal and I completely understand why people wouldn't like it. When BVS came out we knew we would eventually see it. we didn't like it a TON in theatres but we had fun with the film nonetheless. When the Ultimate Edition came out of course i was gonna give the film another shot and upon seeing it I liked the film a helluva lot more, Seeing this scene brought me back to my 13 year old self who was afraid and felt alone in the world, and reminded me of why superman as a character held so much meaning to me. While we can argue for ages as to why these movies are good or bad, there is no denying that these characters have had impacts on people, and its okay to like or dislike them tbh. Dont go out of your way to insult others because you like or dislike a certain film ^_^

It doesn't get commented on much, but this scene represents Superman's internalized fortress of solitude. The fortress isn't a specific building. It's a state of mind where he goes to contemplate, to hear his father's voice.
We see more of that as he is reborn & goes to collect his suit. He even glances at the blue suit but goes with the honorary black kryptonian suit (im my own mind) that choice indicates his acceptance of both his Kryptonian heritage and his home world of earth.

It took Batman a long while to realize this is who Superman is: a man trying to save people but is haunted by the ones he cannot save...like him. Just like Bruce couldn't save his parents because he was a scared young kid, Clark couldn't save his dad because Jonathan didn't want him to risk himself for him. Both of them miss the men that had great effect on their lives. That's always been the core of a "Batman vs Superman" story: two very different men yet so very much alike.

Funny how people say Jonathan Kent was badly portrayed in MoS and think he was pessimistic to his son and wasn’t a good guidance for him like in the comics. But this scene proves those haters wrong as it shows Jonathan was an inspiration to Clark and still try’s to seek guidance from him even after his death and after Clark felt like giving up.
