- Jolleen is a first time freshener Dexter cow. She is halter trained and mostly lead trained. She has never been in a milk stanchion. We are beginning the process of training her to be a milk cow. Jolleen is homozygous polled and carries A2/A2 milk proteins.
Can we do it??

About Sweet Briar Farm
We are a small farm located in Central/Northern Michigan. We farm every inch of our 6 acres. We breed Registered Dairy Goats, Dexter Cattle, and Heritage Hogs. Clean healthy food is important to us and we like to produce the majority of our food on the farm and we grow and raise enough to sell to local customers. Producing our own food also means we forage for wild edibles such as mushrooms and tap our maple trees in the spring to make maple syrup. In 2019 we added honeybees to the farm and have had as many as 30 active hives producing honey for us.
Our goats include Nubian goats, Mini Nubians, Fainting Goats, and Nigerian Dwarf goats.
Our Heritage Hogs include: registered Berkshires, Tamworth, Registered Kune Kune, and Hereford.

Great that she ended up having a good-looking udder in addition to her friendlier temperament🙂 Certainly mama speaks for her boy's potential bull career.
We are hopeful he is nicely structured as he grows. The genetics are there. We shall see!
Glad that little guy isn't any stronger! Great job guys!!
He should train nicely the more we work with him. Our Dr. Quinn was/is a total jerk whenever we would try haltering her.
She did great for her first time. She might make a great milk cow.. I just love watching you and Kelsey work the cows. Kelsey that's was pretty neat how u haltered that baby like a superwoman
It is one of our favorite things to do. We either feel like super jerks or failures lol
I meant superhero’s not jerks 😂
@@SweetBriarFarmMichigan that's okay we learn from our failures and well as our success..
@@rachelpotter6545 yes we do
Certainly is a process. ❤
It sure is. Made some changes after some set backs. More this week.
Fun to watch the process.
It takes time, but eventually, you'll be able to milk her no problem. Part of our routine when halter training heifers is that we touch their teats too so they get familiarized. Also, something that may help you with her kicking. Will be the (Kick Stop) tool for cows. Good video, as always. 👍👍.
We did play with her teats for months before lol sounds funny typing it😂. We had a set back in the other day and she started kicking. We totally messed up. Tried too much at once. But I did buy a Kow Kant kick bar and had a baby step forward this morning. We will share the videos this week and by next sundays video we should have a pail of milk! We are participating in a month long collaboration for Dairy month so hopefully we can get it done!

Part 1/ Brilliant I think Jolene is going to settle well into milking- interested to see how much milk she gives. Kelsey you are exceptional as you both are. Great video very interesting. Cheers Denise- Australia
🤞🏽
Fantastic video! Love learning from you all. Thanks for sharing. Jess
Our pleasure!
Hard work
😎
We get 1.5gal from our 12yr old dexter. Her daughter is due in August and has been pretty wild, but calming down recently. I’m excited to see how much milk you get!
That’s great! We are making progress 😄
Great video! Could you share the fly spray recipe?
We have it written down in the barn. Kelsey has to double check but the main ingredients are vinegar, dawn dish soap, and water. It’s temporary relief while milking but works.
