I am in Nevis in the Caribbean and I am concerned about a world food crisis ( who isnt) . I watched this video many times and tried to copy what he did. Surprisingly, it actually works. I even cut my sweet potato in 2 as there were shoots on the top but no roots. I followed his instructions as much as possible. Now I have 5 shoots on the top half and the bottom half it is developing many slips. Thanks to this video.

Sweet potatoes takes about 6-8 months depending on the variety and the zone you live etc. When the leaves begin to turn yellow cut the vines (save some vines to make slips). Gently remove soil for amendment (reuse) and harvest the potatoes. ( these are in my notes which I took watching many many videos on growing sweet potatoes). I hope this helps

This is my obligatory PSA to let everyone know that sweet potato greens are delicious and very good for you. You can trim the younger leaves & stems to use like spinach (I use these in my green smoothies frequently). NOTE: this only applies to sweet potatoes. Do not eat regular potato greens as those are poisonous. Sweet Potatoes are a member of the morning glory family and the tuber (sweet potato), vine, greens, and flower is edible. Regular potatoes are a part of the nightshade family, so the greens are poisonous.
I can't even eat the potato tubers, nor tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, or even goji berries, because the amount of solanine in them makes me ill. Gotta hand it to the nightshade family - they can hide their poisons well!

I’ve been growing slips for over 8 years since I first heard it could be done. I’ve actually kept the same sweet potato crop going all those years by using potatoes from the very first crop I grew. I have not found it matters which half of the potato you put in the water. Some bury the potato 1/2 way under soil and take the slips as they grow. It’s almost hard to fail growing slips. Just slice it in half, place the sliced end into water, and the slips will grow. I also haven’t had any issue with taking the slips off without their own roots. I simply wrap the tiny slips in a sliver of paper towel to help them stand up, keeping them watered as the roots grown, then plant them in soil, then in the ground or pots. Enjoy and grow your own food as much as you can. 👍🏼

For me they are just about the same. I think it's easier to get regular potatoes going. I got my slips last year from someone. I just plant baby sweet potatoes to get more of them.

I’m a beginner gardener with raised beds and last year I tried and failed miserably at potatoes and sweet potatoes among other vegetables. Thanks for the vid. Very informative. I don't know where in the world you are, so, please, what temperatures are needed for sweet potatoes? Can they cope with lousy English summers? Or would I have to plant them in a greenhouse/polytunnel? And, is it too late to start trying for slips?
I tried this last year with organic potatoes from a local market. After 10 weeks I had only a small amount of small roots showing and the potatoes were starting to rot. I thought they must have not been organic. This year I bought two organic potatoes from each of four different grocery stores and health food stores. The result was the same as the prior year. I use only filtered water with the chlorine removed. I also bought 10 slips from a well known garden supply company this year. When they arrived they looked dead but I planted them anyway. Only one survived. I’ve watched several videos, including yours, and they all make it look easy. Do you have any recommendations?
Thanks for a great video, very informative to this beginner sweet potato home gardener. So it seems that no matter how you cut or not cut a sweet potato and put it in water you’ll get some slips. More slips in some ways and less in others but you’ll get slips in the end. That is really good info. I think I’ll put this on paper in a summarized fashion and keep with my gardening notes.

I bought a sweet potato, I forgot about it... it’s been in a black grocery bag for three weeks... Didn’t notice it ‘til leaves were sticking out of the bag... and now it’s grown like 10 inches... and I’m just like, “UH?!”
I bought 2, but only had a vase for 1. I left one on the table in a bag. It went crazy, lol

I'm so happy I just grew my very first sweet potato slips I can't wait to put them in the ground to see how many I get. I live in Connecticut so our last frost date is April 12 still to cold to put them outside

I’ve been growing slips for over 8 years since I first heard it could be done. I’ve actually kept the same sweet potato crop going all those years by using potatoes from the very first crop I grew. I have not found it matters which half of the potato you put in the water. Some bury the potato 1/2 way under soil and take the slips as they grow. It’s almost hard to fail growing slips. Just slice it in half, place the sliced end into water, and the slips will grow. I also haven’t had any issue with taking the slips off without their own roots. I simply wrap the tiny slips in a sliver of paper towel to help them stand up, keeping them watered as the roots grown, then plant them in soil, then in the ground or pots.

For me they are just about the same. I think it's easier to get regular potatoes going. I got my slips last year from someone. I just plant baby sweet potatoes to get more of them.

I know this is an old video but I have been sitting here watching videos for the last week off and on and yours is the first video I’ve seen that fully describes what a sweet potato slip is and the actual process (wrong and right) and description of each. I’m a beginner gardener with raised beds and last year I tried and failed miserably at potatoes and sweet potatoes among other vegetables. Humid and dark. So keep it in a box of warm soil, watered, covered mostly near a window.

I used Vietnam sweet potato, a medium sized one + water + room temperature. It grew fast as hell: 1.2 meters within 4 weeks.

I tried this last year with organic potatoes from a local market. After 10 weeks I had only a small amount of small roots showing and the potatoes were starting to rot. I thought they must have not been organic.
This year I bought two organic potatoes from each of four different grocery stores and health food stores. The result was the same as the prior year. I use only filtered water with the chlorine removed. I also bought 10 slips from a well known garden supply company this year. When they arrived they looked dead but I planted them anyway. Only one survived.
I’ve watched several videos, including yours, and they all make it look easy.

Thanks for a great video, very informative to this beginner sweet potato home gardener. So it seems that no matter how you cut or not cut a sweet potato and put it in water you’ll get some slips. More slips in some ways and less in others but you’ll get slips in the end. That is really good info. I think I’ll put this on paper in a summarized fashion and keep with my gardening notes.
I guess I have done something wrong all I have is roots not slips and I have had them in water for a month maybe longer. :(
