Was this a case better to be lucky than good. I guess that will decided on whose side you were on. However I think these books may give the Japanese more credit than they deserve. Think about it other than a sucker punch at pearl when they show how much better they were . Than the (poorly trained American).

Very strange to hear of Japanese bravery. I was taught they were blood-thirsty killers wherever they struck and that they felt powerful invading various cultures and putting these indigenous people to the blade. It was on full display throughout the 50s in the morning TV movies.....

This primarily Japanese skewed vision of the Battle of Midway is surprisingly good in shedding details from a Japanese POV. Accordingly though apparently the Japanese naval forces did slmost everything right, with much superior aviators and better tactics, while the American forces did almost everything possibly wrong. Yet somehow by some strange quirk of fate Americans beat the tar out of the Japanese, sinking 3 aircraft carriers. I hardly believe it was all luck, though luck was a big part of it. Americans kicked Japanese butt here and all across the Pacific. Luck is never all that one sided. Although American fliers made every conceivable mistske (per this Japanese analysis) they must have gotten a few things right enough to show Japan who ruled the waves.
I think this report is very typical of the Japanese in hindsight. Their hairarchy and power structure was never able to learn from its mistakes, hence war games did them little to no good. The Japanese brass were too egotisticaly arrogant to listen to, or allow, underlimgs to point out errors. This was endemic to WWII Japan, inflexibility and inability to delicate responsible decision making of Japanese high command is what killed them over and over again. It's in a nutshell what lost the war for them. In the American military a lowly seaman can tell an admiral what he doing wrong, though heavily frowned upon it's still possible. And it's why America kicks ass beginning about 8 months sfter Pearl Harbor.
The US learns from its mistakes, while Japan could not. It's all about ego and Japan's hubris at the end of the day. "Live and learn."

What the Americans got right was all out aggression. Eventually they wore the Japanese CAP down even though the cost was terrible and it was not the plan. The Americans also had a good idea of what the Japanese were up to from decoded signals; that's why the Americans were where they were. From this Japanese POV it was a random event but there was nothing random about it. It was a planned ambush by the Americans.

This is the book Shattered Sword, widely regarded as the best analysis of Midway, based on a reading of American and Japanese primary sources. It's written by an American.
I rather think your take that America learned and Japan didn't is patriotic trite.
