The Japanese sickness of Wishful Thinking certainly was prevalent in this episode.It's absolutely amazing that they were still worrying about the Aleutians. The "night engagement" was a great example of wishful thinking.

A prudent force commander, upon realizing theyd been trapped, and having lost 3/4 of the carrier force as well as being uncertain of what he actually faced, would have disengaged, and retired.
