- Jesus Christ Superstar: Highlights From the All-Female Studio Cast Recording-featuring tunes from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical recorded by an all-female cast, orchestra, and engineers-drops April 29 on all digital music services, part of Morgan James' She Is Risen project.
“I think you'll hear lyrics maybe that you've never heard before, or at least in a way that you've never heard them,” shares Shoshana Bean, who sings the role of Judas on the album. Watch Bean's exclusive performance of “Heaven on Their Minds” in the video above.
Soul singer and Broadway alum James (Godspell) leads the cast as Jesus Christ, with Wicked and Waitress star Bean as Judas Iscariot, and The Color Purple Tony winner Cynthia Erivo as Mary Magdalene. They're joined by Grammy winner Ledisi as Simon, comedian Bridget Everett as King Herod, Legally Blonde star Orfeh as Pilate, and Tony winner Debbie Gravitte.
The recording follows two earlier EP releases. The culminating release newly adds "The Temple," "Damned for All Time," "The Last Supper," "Pilate and Christ," and "Trial Before Pilate" to the 10 tracks previously released as She Is Risen: Volume I and She Is Risen: Volume II.
The project began as a 2017 concert at New York City's Highline Ballroom, the brainchild of James.
Jesus Christ Superstar: Highlights From the All-Female Studio Cast Recording is helmed by executive producers Dawn Kamerling and Richard Amelius, producers Meg Toohey and James, and engineers Hannah Tobias and Vira Byramji, with mixing and mastering by Rachel Alina.

Phenominal performance! The vocal performance is off the charts, and playing the instrumental on a single acoustic guitar is brilliant! I always associate this with electric, but y’all have captured all the power, just from voice and hands.

Carl Anderson was Judas in the film version..but this female version adds a new twist to the long running musical awsome.

I *love* the idea of an all-female JCS. Hell, my sister and I have sung to the Original Concept Recording all our lives, just for fun. (My family's obsessed w/the show.) As for Ms. Bean... I don't know her from anywhere though the name is familiar, and boy, she has a great voice. I wish I had even an ounce of her talent.
Still, I find her voice a little too... thin and delicate, maybe? Actually sounds better for Jesus than Judas. Judas requires more than a pretty voice: I'm just not hearing the complex emotions... the anger/ desperation/ resentment that this fantastic number demands. Judas needs a real soulful, emotive voice, something with some grit. Jennifer Hudson, Ann Wilson, probably several country singers but I don't know many by name... maybe even Adele (though I'm not sure she has the acting chops).
I'm going too much into this, I don't mean to insult her. It's a fantastic project and I bet she had a fantastic time singing this phenomenal role. I'll certainly be looking for the whole project!
As a huge ShoBean fan and a huge fan of the original 1970 album, I admit this particular video goes to your point, but go listen to the actual album (it's on every streaming platform), I actually think her Judas is the best the role has EVER been sung, everything is there, and believe me, there's no grit or emotion lacking
This aside, go watch her sing Make it Rain. Will not. Be disappointed.
I love her delivery but would love to hear a robust mezzo do her interpretation note for note.

I prefer Jodie Steele’s version because there’s an energy and urgency to it that I don’t feel here, this just feels like an incredible showcase of a phenomenal voice without the story

I would love to see JC Superstar done with Melissa Ethridge as Judas, Brandi Carlisle as JC, Lady Gaga as Herod, Meshell Ndegeocello as Pontius Pilate, LP as Caiaphas, and the Indigo Girls as the Soul Girls. That would be incredible. JC Superstar done with a complete lesbian cast. Now that's what I'm talk'n bout.
Amy and Emily did Jesus Christ Superstar Resurrection almost 30 years ago - there's even a cd. Not a full lesbian cast, but pretty cool version.

@Guy Ledouche lol one all-female casts exists and suddenly it's a pattern pushing men out of musical theatre 😅 look at the casts and creative teams of current Broadway musicals, and you'll see the majority are men. Don't you worry, buddy, men aren't going anywhere

This is a clip from SNL, yes? That's why I'm laughing me fool arse off? Performed as if she had never heard of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and just been handed the lyrics five minutes before recording. Shoshana sings the way William Shatner performs Kirk: "Spock...we need...to figure this...out... Ship...will...explode otherwise."
