- Jesus Christ Superstar: Highlights From the All-Female Studio Cast Recording-featuring tunes from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical recorded by an all-female cast, orchestra, and engineers-drops April 29 on all digital music services, part of Morgan James' She Is Risen project.
“I've personally never been in a creative space with that many women,” shares Morgan James, who sings the role of Jesus on the album. "Everyone says that women can't work together, and that's just not true. We are so strong when we're together, and I just felt this love in the room and this camaraderie and sisterhood." Soul singer and Broadway alum James (Godspell) leads the cast as Jesus Christ, with Wicked and Waitress star Bean as Judas Iscariot, and The Color Purple Tony winner Cynthia Erivo as Mary Magdalene. They're joined by Grammy winner Ledisi as Simon, comedian Bridget Everett as King Herod, Legally Blonde star Orfeh as Pilate, and Tony winner Debbie Gravitte.
The recording follows two earlier EP releases. The culminating release newly adds "The Temple," "Damned for All Time," "The Last Supper," "Pilate and Christ," and "Trial Before Pilate" to the 10 tracks previously released as She Is Risen: Volume I and She Is Risen: Volume II.
The project began as a 2017 concert at New York City's Highline Ballroom, the brainchild of James.
Jesus Christ Superstar: Highlights From the All-Female Studio Cast Recording is helmed by executive producers Dawn Kamerling and Richard Amelius, producers Meg Toohey and James, and engineers Hannah Tobias and Vira Byramji, with mixing and mastering by Rachel Alina.

As soon as she said she clicked map the recording, I got chills. That makes me so satisfied and honestly probably took a lot of takes and time to get right and on top of that it's all female. I'm so excited

For another woman singing "Gethsemane" check out Amy Ray's version from the 1994 Jesus Christ Superstar - A Resurrection studio album (which also started life as a concert). It's intense and grungy, and well worth a listen. Although as far as vocal prowess is concerned there is no comparison - Morgan James has one of the best voices in the business.

I'd love to see an all female cast of Superstar...except for Mary Magdelene. A man should play her. If nothing else it would be nice to see man relegating to doing nothing but washing feet and weeping while the women do everything else.

While I get the idea of an all female production, I think it might be interesting if there was a male performing the Mary Magdalene role. “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” has been done by so many female singers I think it might be a good contrast.

This is a clip from "American Idol," right? Some ALW theme week where Simon Cowell is the only one honest enough to tell Morgan that her performance is shrill and and at no point does it appear that she understands what she is singing. (I've also heard the released track with full backing and it is laughably bad.) Whose idiot idea was it to replicate the original tempo? The arrangements should have been updated anyway to reflect female voices singing in a higher register. But nope. Wanna see a great female interpretation of JCS? Check out Jodi Steele!

She's good, but that awful acoustic guitar is like fingernails on a chalkboard and almost ruins it. And why does she have to be in the shot? I'd like to just watch the performer playing Jesus.

I'm sure the music is great but I am not understanding the point. Jesus was a real person and was a man, not a woman. Is your next role going to make Alexander Hamilton a woman also? Sometimes our "dreams" should be left as dreams. Just because you dream something that does not mean it needs to be reality. There are so many ways for women to fulfill their creative passion without making their farfetched version of history. Make music that matters instead of conjuring up something just to get noticed.

So a woman should never be allowed to play the part of a man? Why does it matter? Men played the parts of women for thousands of years before women were even allowed to take the stage in many parts of the world. Who do you think originally took the female roles in Shakespeare's plays?
And now, in what, just the past 25 years it's finally become acceptable for women to play parts originally reserved for men and suddenly it's all gone too far? Honestly, you should hear yourself. What's the big deal? This is just a single recording out of dozens made of this musical over the last 50 years, all sung by men. Nobody is forcing you to enjoy it, or even listen to it.
