OMG!!! JAMES LAST: an iconic conductor, particularly recognized for his orchestral dance versions. Thank you, Brandon, for putting this great too-forgotten name back at the top of the poster.

@@retroreactions.... I have known JAMES LAST since I was a teenager. My parents were admirers of this conductor and his instrumental versions; consequently, they bought his records. In short, my introduction to LAST came early and, even if its musical category is far from being one of my priorities, I have never concealed my esteem for the exceptional quality of its production.

As an APP listener, I can attest that everything is better when you slap an orchestra onto it! And as bands like Metallica and The Tea Party have proven, it doesn't matter the genre! If you wanna hear more orchestral collaborations, can I recommend John Farnham singing his cover of 'Help' by the Beatles, backed up by The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (1989). Amazing performance!

@@retroreactions.... I am "Looking for Someone" over a californian "White Mountain" to show him "The Knife" (1972 live), if he fails to see it, he will remain in the "Stagnation" and the "Dusk" of the true/majestic and timeless music forever, but... if the opposite happens, he will have "Visions of Angels" 😉😁

I feel fairly confident that what came to be called Prog found eager ears among the classical mindset, for whom legato atmospherics proved bromidical and edifying in what could be a romper room of adolescent cacophony. Where strings were lacking, one found a mellotron, which became the preferred desideratum. So I love this kind of thing, and here the Floyd especially. And I would also recommend the Tull song, "Elegy" with Ian and band backed up by the London Symphony Orchestra. Quintessentially elegiac.

Happy that this is your vibe. Oh, Tull plus LSO, sounds like a match made in heaven. I think Deep Purple did the same...

What a super idea doing these orchestral versions!! I really liked all three, but damn, “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” was on a whole other level!! 💿💿💿 Some of the violin reminded me of “Evening Song”…..you’ll need to revisit Jon Lord with “Pictured Within”.

First again my friend!! Yes, a last minute theme switch up and 1000% more rewarding than what I was going to do. Triple platinum performance sounds about right for Shine On! Ah yes, Jon Lord...one of hundreds that is overdue on the channel 🙂 Thanks my friend and good night! 🥇

    Nice reaction compilation today!
"Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" was nice, made me think of romantic or sentimental scenes from spaghetti western movies? (I love those movies!) but I don't think I'd seek it out to listen a second time?
"That's All" was not my cup of tea at all, but the original wasn't either. And certain orchestral arrangements of rock/pop songs tend to turn me off, it's like the arrangers don't know how to do an orchestral percussion arrangement and instead just stick a guy on a drum set and say "just play a beat". 😒 Sorry, pet peeve of mine! 😊🤭
BUT the "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" arrangement was GLORIOUS, and I will look for that in the future! 👌💖👍
Regarding orchestral Genesis, I have an album titled "We Know What We Like - The Music of Genesis" with David Palmer conducting The London Symphony Orchestra. Steve Hackett and Ian Anderson make a couple guest appearances and Palmer's arrangements are often quite good IMHO. He makes compilations of parts of two or more songs into one and sometimes adds his own original sections to tie things together. (for instance in one under 4 minute piece he combines parts of "Duke's Travels", "Fountain Of Salmacis", "The Knife", "Unquiet Slumbers", and "Los Jigos"! 🤯) I adore about 50% of the music on the album, 25% is just OK, and 25% I don't care for. The whole thing is on RUclips for those who want to check it out:

Thanks! Yes, as interpretations, I can see how 1 listen can suffice with these... Now that you mention it, would be cool to hear That's All given a darker slow orchestral arrangement! Glad you loved Shine On's interpretation. Thanks for the link. I think I saw that performance during my research yesterday..

I didn’t know what to expect, but that was cool. To be honest, it kinda reminded me of when someone like Lawrence Welk would try to be hip and cool by playing contemporary music (but in a good way). I especially liked the Pink Floyd, that one really stood out. Somewhere I have an album of music like this, all orchestral versions of modern music; I’ll have to look it up (I’m out of town right now) and report back to you.

Very interesting, when you already know the originals, some little changes that I disliked here and there, but anyway it's another lecture with an orchestra why not. Captivating overall, the power of the original remains

Brandon, now I'm worried for you, are you getting on a cruise with senior citizens?
Because it certainly sounds like it!
There are so many orchestra mixes during the 80s which keep the basic tenets of a songs, and now you are asking us to listen to thé Royal Performance? 🤮

😬 Sorry, man, not my thang. The first one sounded like full on Muzak and had my teeth on edge. The second one was kinda meh. The third one was only saved by the electric guitar. I really wanted to like them, I came into it expecting to like them, but I gotta say I wouldn't voluntarily choose to listen to any of them again. 🤷🏽‍♀
