My spouse and I took away some ideas, like creating set times of the day for practicing using the potty. The overall approach seems best for a type A person with a busy lifestyle. Which, in the end, works because potty training should be a time where parents learn how to communicate with their children, and how their children express their needs--and the children learn to adjust to their parents' expectations and lifestyle demands. There's nothing inherently biological about toddlers learning to use the toilet (plenty of people don't learn to use a sit-down toilet until their adult years), but toilet training during the toddler years is a special time where parents and their children learn more about each other and how to work together.

As a PNP for over 20 years, I love this video. I have seen so many parents that force it and then stress the child out and end up with a constipated, anxious child. Great video! You are a great resource to parents!

Thank you thank you!!!! Great tips that I will try with my son. There's sooo much stuff about the 3 day method and I'm glad that you have a more realistic approach.

This video is SO good, Dr. Mona! Though we aren’t quite “ready” yet, this video has eased some of my anxiety that is already building up! You laid it out perfectly and I’ll definitely be coming back to reference this video in the future!

This is a great video, except for the difficulty I had hearing the doctor when her voice dropped to a whisper as she ended sentences. I hope she works on keeping her voice audible throughout!

My sons are 3.5 and 2, the we’re doing amazing for while but then I had to go out of town for a few days. I’m nice I came home they wanted nothing to do with it and cry anytime we ask them to sit on the potty. It’s frustrating

I'm sorry to hear that potty training can be so frustrating for all involved! It's common for kids to go through setbacks especially if a big change happens in their routine. If they're getting upset in the process I'd take a break and then try again in a few weeks or during a time with no upcoming big changes! Best of luck!

My 4 1/2 year old is not fully potty trained. She goes to daycare, she is the only one who still isn’t trained. They put pull ups on her for nap time. And undies through the whole day, she won’t let them know she has to go. And they bring her in the potty every 1/2 hour. She doesn’t pull her pants down or up herself, they have to pull her pants and underwear up and down all by herself.
BUT with me at my house she does tell me she has to go, she does say I need to potty mama, she does walk to the bathroom and have me fallow her, she does pull her pants and underwear up and down.
What do I do??? She’s been at the daycare for 1 year and still doesn’t tell them when she needs to go.

Is it possible to try a reward system while she’s at school? Like if she tells her teachers she needs to go potty she gets a sticker/small toy etc? You may need to give the reward at home but still may be worth trying. Also try talking with her about why she won’t go to the potty independently at school. Praise her when she does the behavior you want to see. And are there any other developmental concerns? If so talk with your clinician, sometimes there are other factors at play and kids may benefit from therapy or other interventions can help. Best of luck!

I almost skipped this video when I saw pediatrician because I don't trust doctors very much. 😅 Being a mom is far more of a qualification imo. Good information though. Thank you!
