Hey everyone, just wanted to leave another note about tuning. I play all riffs for the gallop and reverse gallop in standard. The advanced portion where the gallop is within the triplet is all played in Drop D to coincide with song examples. I used these two tunings for ease of demonstration. This makes it easy to focus on the rhythm and avoids the need to retune for virtually every riff. Thanks for watching! Hi bro. Just subscribed. Im a big fan of your Metallica lessons. Can u please do a lesson on 'Hallowed be thy Name' - Iron Maiden. Metal/Maiden fans/myself included, will really appreciate it, Thanks in advance!
@@linebreaker622 Thanks man! I really want to do that song and you're not the first to request it. I'll bump it way up the list. Thanks for watching and commenting! 🍻🤘
Excellent lesson. A lot of people seem to mix up triplets and gallops. Great breakdown to clarify. Loved the inclusion of the advanced section with the combined triplet gallops. I'm pretty sure that Carcass and Suffocation have used that variation quite a bit.
Hey Tim. Just wanted to echo the sentiment here that this lesson was very well done. It was my first video of yours after watching a few on gallop riffs, and by far my favorite. I'm going to watch it again. -Newly Subscribed Viewer
Hey Tim, ive found you around 2 months ago, and all the metallica songs u covered ( especially from killem all since im into this album currently ) are perfect, you explain really well, ur tone and sound ( not overbearing distortion ) are also perfect. You’re a legend really thank you so much for these, you take your time to explain every section and it’s just a fun way to learn them ( plus ur very accurate in the transcriptions ) rather than struggling to just follow a tab without a reference to see how they’re actually played/what fingers they’re using and all. In conclusion thank u lol just wanted to write this paragraph to apreciate ya!🤘🏼
Hi Tim, after so many years learning guitar on youtube I was lucky enough to find your awesome channel, I really like the didactic way of your lessons/videos in the channel! Thank you very much for this quality content, you have a new subscriber here in Spain ;-)
Thanks Tim. These videos are a godsend! I've been consistently using your downstroke practice plan since September 2022 and it's increased my downstroke speed incredibly. I can't wait to start getting the same improvements to my gallop rhythms. Don't forget the Metallica vids! Am I Evil and Blitzkrieg would be nice to finish up the Elektra release of Kill Em' All.
Right on! Glad to hear that the routine is working. I'm redoing my lesson on Breadfan because I'm thoroughly unhappy with the first vid I did on it. Then I'm going to do Helpless because a lot of requests have come in for that one. Then I'm planning on Am I Evil and Blitzkrieg.
Dude I’ve watched a few of your videos wow you can play hats off to you cuz I’m struggling my ass off learning I’m starting at 52 I’ll probably be dead b4 I even get decent at playing lol
Best lesson I have seen thus far. They all call the gallop a triplet. So it seems I have been practicing a triplet ( down up down) + 1 down stroke. So whats that a reverse gallop with 4 notes? Been tripping up a bit with this one. I like the way you have the music and tab to see. As I actually can read music. The first thing I learned actually.
Barracuda riff was stolen from Nazareth's "This Flight Tonight" a song written by Joni Mitchel. The Four Horsemen riff was written by Dave Mustaine. but you probably already knew these things. 🙂 I enjoy these improv lessons. It's fun to practice these gallop rhythms and understand them better.
Thanks for adding those song details! I'm glad these videos help you out. I try to answer viewers questions with them so feel free to drop any suggestions. 🍻🎸
Just started a week ago, bought a Ibanez gio, baby amp and effects pedal, looking at Kramers. Can play kinda intro to "day that never comes" metallica. Galloping along with Papa Het or Dave Must. be cuz they have a devils tooth pick.. killer. ✌️😈possesses us.
Great tutorial, thank you! Is the last variation called triplet gallop? I am having a little hard time summing up each triplet to 1/4th beat. For example, if I want to simply play triplets in each beat of 4/4, each beat will be 1/12 - 1/12 - 1/12th note. Now if we want to convert it to the variation you are showing, is it 1/12 - 1/12 - 1/24 - 1/24th note for each beat? If that's the case, it would sum up to 1/4th note. Another way could be to play each beat as 1/8 - 1/24 - 1/24 - 1/24. I think this would be the triplet gallop where last two 1/16th note of gallop is replaced by three 1/24th notes.
The Reign in blood riff is close but not correct to the original, something off about it. It starts on a downstroke and needs an extra zero or something on that ending lick
Great lesson. I started galloping starting with up down up. I find it easier to power chord right after. Do you agree or should I just stick to the standard down up down?
I would recommend practicing all the rhythms with the picking that I'm showing. Massively superior ability will result anytime you need to slow down and build a new habit into your playing.
In all these rhythm tutorials I never see a reference to Jon Schaffer from Iced Earth, who I would consider to be the right hand master for classic metal.
Ya know the tabs are wrong on Blooddrunk by children of bodom? Your tabs show the 0 on the A string but you're doing gallops on the e string (in drop d)
This is so much what I needed to watch. Different rhythms don't make sense to me untill I see them written down. Nice one 🤘

Thank a lot! Yeah, you're right. 'Infecting the Crypts' is a Suffocation tune that I know offhand uses the gallop inside the triplet.
more metallica tutorials!!!! i really enjoyed learning phantom lord
Awesome! More coming soon man!
This is fantastic. Currently stuck at home with a ruptured Achilles. This will give me something great to learn. Thank you
auw...
well, maybe you cant gallop in life.
luckely you have a guitar!
This was a killer lesson!
Never knew you could add it to triplets like you did at the end
Lovely explanation, Tim! Thank you so much. That ain't a mystery anymore.
I haven’t watched the video and yet I already know it’s going to be awesome. I’m can’t wait to dig into this lesson later tonight.
Thanks man! I hope you get lots out of it. 🤘
@@TimHolman the lesson was even better than I expected. Thanks so much Tim.

good advice bro..ya should do Piranha from Exodus.. a cool galloping they do :)
Kick ass guitar bud
Amp n settings you use would be cool to know...
Great tutorial, thank you! Is the last variation called triplet gallop? I am having a little hard time summing up each triplet to 1/4th beat. There's a fun one in the Rifium song Halloween Massacre
I can play "Barracuda" without too much trouble but have a hard time playing the main riff from "Black Prophecies" by Dark Angel.
The Reign in blood riff is close but not correct to the original, something off about it. It starts on a downstroke and needs an extra zero or something on that ending lick
Nice alternate

Would a gallop in 6/8 be 1 2 & 3, 4 5 & 6 ?
Slayer - War Ensemble please.
How about those insanely fast gallops? Like the ones Guthrie Goven does

In all these rhythm tutorials I never see a reference to Jon Schaffer from Iced Earth, who I would consider to be the right hand master for classic metal.
Super advanced gallops like In Flames "Meet your maker"? I have both "Barracuda" and "Raining Blood" down. But this one's killing me.
Do more LOG !😈

People make all these videos on galloping but they never explain how to keep the gallop even.
Die by the Sword! SLAYERRR
World Painted Blood is a cool pattern too!
Tell me why I had to fall through a sewer grate…
Gallop - barracuda, reverse gallop - every slayer song written
SLAYER should always be capitalized!
I'm a simple man I hear Iron Maiden I SUBSCRIBE !

I just want to gallop
