In 2016 Philippe Lefebvre played this piece on the instrument at Disney Hall, using chimes in the same manner. The program notes for that concert mentioned that Dupre himself originally had this in mind for the piece. After hearing the wonderful effect of it, I would always choose this registration if it were available for performance.
No intro and outro needed in music videos. It is very annoying when you listen the music in playlists, because you have to hear that intro and outro all the time.
I agree with the others. We're missing out on the beauty of silence before the organist plays the first notes, and the prolonged silence after the last chords echoes out into the void. To me it's more artistic that way. My two cents.
Superbe pièce et toujours avec une interprétation parfaite, un tel calme malgré la difficulté, impressionnant. Petite anecdote : à un endroit vous voyez qu'il place son petit doigt de la main droite au dessus du sol, cette pièce est écrite pour un orgue allant jsq au "do", 6 octaves, ça ne choque pas. Voilà qui me donne envie de la ressortir pour la ré-étudier.
Je n'ai jamais connu un organiste professionnel se plaindre qu'il manque tel note ou tel jeu - ils trouvent toujours une solution. Même (et surtout) pas Louis Thiry, à qui il manquait des phalanges : les auditeurs n'y entendent rien...

He does the missing A-58 on the lower Positif manual A-46, using a higher pitched stop (a 4') than the Récit he is playing on 8' ! (NDP kept its 56-note CC disposition, while Dupré and Duruflé ask sometimes for last A-58.)
What a strange idea, this bell in the Cortège...? Yes, in olden days, there were bells and other effects in pipes organs, but nowdays it is completely obsolete, and not in the original Duprés score !
Not at all strange. This piece has a strong connection to the US. It was written for orchestra in 1922. A few years later, Dupré was encouraged to transcribe it for the organ by his American impresario Alexander Russell. As Dupré toured extensively in the US, and was involved in many prestigious American organ building projects, he was no stranger to the resources of American organs. Chimes are quite commonplace in American organs. They are far from obsolete. Using the chime stop adds an appropriate American flair.

Une tardive réponse de ma part, mais Dupré lui-même avait préconisé ces cloches, cette pièce avait été quasiment créée aux USA où ce jeu est courant. ne prenez pas Latry pour un iconoclaste, sa démarche est audacieuse pour nous Français, mais s'inscrit bien dans l'œuvre et la philosophie de Dupré.

Il importe de distinguer le cas où la respiration est difficile mais présente, du cas où la respiration est totalement absente. Et ce pauvre orgue, est totalement défiguré... A l'aveugle, qui serait capable d'identifier N-D aujourd'hui...?!
La restauration Hermann/Boisseau avait complètement défiguré le Cavaillé (sauf les anches), pour un résultat qui doit sa notoriété, d'abord, au talent de Pierre Cochereau. Dépavillonnage des fonds, mixtures trop étroites (de l'aveu même de Robert Boisseau), chamades hors style et franchement insupportables... La restauration de 1992 a remis pas mal de choses en place. Je n'ai pas d'avis sur la toute dernière, qui était semble-t-il plus quantiotative que qualitative, car je ne l'ai jamais entendu "sur site".
Hahaha... Je n'étais pas allé jusqu'au bout, mais on m'a dit que c'était marrant. Non, finalement, le pin-pon avec le pied droit ne me fait pas marrer, ni visuellement (Ouf), ni autrement. C'est d'un goût tout français... Et de la fin au début, il n'y a qu'un pas, pour signifier que Dupré avait bel et bien validé la mutation de l'enregistrement de... Cochereau ! Du temps où l'orgue, "Le Grand", était encore un orgue...

Great playing, but dreadful video production. The producer may think deliberately degraded video is "artistic", but it adds nothing to the performance if the camera movement and cutting does not reflect the music.
