  • This video guide will help you prepare for the English/English Language exam. I have included examples of how to use simple, compound and complex sentences. There is also a section on the effects of different sentence types. This is to help with the mark for sentence structure and the content mark for variety of sentences.

For compound sentences, remember the term FANBOYS - the word that connects two clauses together (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). It helps a lot

4:22 we can start our complex sentence with the main clause and it doesn’t affect the meaning of the sentence. Consider the following: 1- “Although she was a great teacher, she couldn’t change a lightbulb safely”. 2- She couldn’t change a lightbulb although she was a great teacher. Notice when we start our complex sentence with the main clause, we don’t put a comma.

    Nice...but...
Sorry, but the explanation here seems insufficient and a bit misleading.
Compound sentence is a combination of two independent clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions-- FANBOYS (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet and So). The word "when" is not one of those conjunctions. "When" is a subordinating conjunction, thus, it is used in complex sentences not in compound sentence. Furthermore, complex sentence is a combination of one independent clause and one or more subordinate clause(s) joined by either a relative pronoun (who, whose, whom, that, whichever, which, etc.) or a subordinating conjunction (when, whenever, although, because, before, as soon as...etc.).
A compound sentence may also have a comma. Actually, it must have a comma before the conjunction. A complex sentence may only contain a comma when the subordinate clause** is written before the independent clause**.
When used as part of a whole sentence we don't call it simple sentence anymore; we call it independent clause.
**Subordinate Clause is a word group that has a subject and a verb, but cannot stand alone.
**Independent Clause is a word group that may stand alone or may be called a simple sentence when punctuated with an end mark.
Reference: Elements of Language by HOLT
    Hope it helps.

I hate to be harsh, but I must say I have found a few things wrong with this video. When making compound sentences, you take two independent clauses (two complete thoughts or ideas) and conjoin them using a fanboy AND a comma. You forgot to place a comma in your compound sentences. Also, you failed to mention the second type of complex sentence where you do not need a comma. When making a complex sentence and the independent clause comes first followed by a subordinate clause, you do not need to put a comma. On a different note, I showed this video to my 4th grade class and they quickly picked up on these mistakes. They also found the animated picture of the woman getting electrocuted a bit distracting. Just thought I would share this with you. Having said this, I enjoy watching your videos.

This is why the English Language is tricky...people in other countries who speak English (notice her accent) do not use commas the way we do in the U.S.
Have you ever used mentor texts in your classroom to find most books written in other English speaking countries do not use commas the way we do?
Just because other countries do not use commas the way we do does not mean it is "wrong" it's just different.
Commas are always changing anyways, who could keep up?
