I would never just sit in school just to sit. I did that by force for 12 years
CandyCandy yeah a masters isn’t worth it unless you absolutely need it for a career path
Agreed
@ CandyCandy , my aunt’s old friend was taking one class a semester almost each year at community college; mostly because it was something to do & not be bored (retired & widowed). She never picked a major, just took classes. 12 yrs later, she gets a letter from the college saying she’s graduated. She was surprised.
Well when you put it that way!
Jeez man well when you put it like that you make it sound like a bad idea.
Should be mandatory for college students to have some kind of session every year where they look at the job market and talk about what their actual future plans are. just to make sure they're not wasting their money.
they do. students don't use it though.
@@nzmanhdee6246 key part is "mandatory" not optional.
LittleMopeHead Mandatory doesn’t mean anything to college kids when their number amounts to thousand. They slack off all the time. I
@TheCoffeeNut711 maybe it deserves to be hurt if their success depends on financially ruining young adults
That would be like requiring people to go through a financial responsibility class before buying a car. Why would they do that when they can sucker money out of young people who don't know any better who have been told that college is the only way to get respect in society anymore?
People like this woman are why Dave never recommends credit cards.
It’s unfortunate because credit cards can benefit you if used right!
@@NickPeitsch Exactly but Dave assumes everyone who uses one is some ignorant spending fool when countess people including millionaires and billionaires use them every day. You can even get banned from Dave's facebook site for even mentioning them. Plus you can use them to buy things off of Dave's site. There is no way for an online site to tell the difference between a visa/MC cc vs a debit card. That is why I just left when I found out they were that way. The worst is the strawman argument of becoming rich off of points or whatever. I have never met a person who thought that a cc bonuses was going to make them a millionaire.
Ryan De Witt jeez that’s crazy man. My mom has been using credit cards with her business for years, accumulating enough points for her to purchase all of our family’s flight points every year! Not using credit cards in the 21st century is just foolish
@Johnny Five same here
@@NickPeitsch It's like an extended warranty. These credit card companies would not be doing it if they were not making money off of it. So some people will get more than they give, but most won't. Since most people needing Dave's advice are prone to behaviors that get them into debt, they are MORE likely than average to not be in the group that gets more than they pay to the credit card company. So, broadly speaking he notes the relatively minor positives versus the potential negatives just aren't worth the risk of handling snakes. I'm not saying I agree with his scorched earth policy on the subject, but I 100% understand why in his profession it makes sense to just tell people to stay away altogether.
60k in Master degree that she is not even using it 🙄

What a waste... 🤦♀️
This is sooooo common - people getting degrees in areas they’re not even passionate about - all just to say they have a degree. 😬
Welcome to the reality of University degrees....I would reckon only 30% of degree students ever work in a field even remotely related to the area of their study...
It’s probably a bummer to have returning callers still be dumb

She called back in Feb and didn't get a masters in the mean time. So she is aware of her shortcomings.. so let's not go Judey on her.
Did she say 60k for masters, just to get it?? No use. She just wants to say she has a Masters 😂
A masters is useless unless you NEED higher education to get into a career like becoming a professor!
@@NickPeitsch not true, alot of high paying jobs in tech like Data engineering, Data Science require you to have a masters degree. Even in petroleum and chemical engineering Masters pays about 20k more per year. But that is only in STEM careers.

These people should be researching their opportunities in the chosen field. With everything online it's not that hard. Don't see any jobs in alphabet soup gender studies? Better not spend $200K on that degree lest you end up working at the local shoe store.
I have 2 undergrad degrees in STEM, one which requires a license to actually work in the field. As much as I love Microbiology and would love to eventually get a doctorate, I'm not going back to school unless someone, my job and/or school covers ALL expenses. Who gets a Masters just because....she just prolonged the inevitable and made it bigger.
A friends daughter is graduating high school tomorrow and she is going to college for marine biology. Now I don't know anything about this area of study/field or what jobs she can get afterwards but I do hope she can get a job and make good money to support herself.
I’m a lab tech as well, and I actually had someone ask me why haven’t I gotten my masters degree yet. Umm... because I don’t need one.

@Mister Donkey for most women it is. They pop out kids for income.
Mac Neoh what type of woman are you meeting that you even say something like that 😂
@@MDM00023 Yep that when you know you are in the wrong group of people.
Well it is counted as income when you file taxes.
Child support is to help pay bills and rent. So that makes sense.
If you couldn’t get a job with your bachelors what makes you think a masters and more debt would do the trick 🤦🏽♂️
That is true the case for some fields though, like hard-sciences. Impossible to get a job without an advanced degree.
Well, for some fields you actually need to get a masters to do anything with it: social work, counseling, chaplaincy...etc.
Caller: "I wanted to go to law school but couldn't afford it, so I did a masters in criminology instead". Dave: "To do what." Caller: "I'm not sure." 🙄 🙄
She couldn’t afford the criminology degree either. And they do grant loans for law school too. I think it’s that she couldn’t get into law school.
My brother is 22. He didn’t go to college. He went straight into the gas utility business. He just purchased his first home, on Long Island (outrageously expensive market). With cash.
I met a woman who collected child support for 18 year's. She got pregnant again in her late 30's from another sucker to continue her life time journey of receiving child support money. I found out child support is tax free for women. I really believe that our entitlement system of suing men should be a crime. I've never been married or have kids and encourage men to be very careful with the mindset of women today. I'm sure the courts will start making men feel obligated to pay for these student debts these women have simply for dating them.
I have a BA in Criminology from Ohio State...

A couple of years ago I was in that masters degree mood and wanted to go to grad school “just because” and I’m so glad it didn’t work out. I would have completely wasted my time, energy and money!
bravo on that choice!!! I'm at the end of my degree and did this for noble reasons with a scholarship and I still feel it's been a huge burden of wasted time and energy
Did Dave really say that making 50k a year is less than what a high school graduate would make 🤯 I’m over here thinking that’s a pretty decent salary 😐
I think he forget the 50k rather than the 39k that she originally said, but still, I was thinking the same thing
He was thinking of 35K at the end of the video. He got confused when she said 39k a year at the beginning of the video.
Not in California. That's living paycheck to paycheck if you are not financially literate.
Remember that the 50K includes child support and renting a room in her house. Dave assumed that her income from her employment was about 35K, so that is the number he was referring to when he said a high school graduate would make.

This happens way too frequently and needs to be talked about more. The days of "any degree is worth it" are long gone. I know it was really pushed on me and everyone else my age and is a major factor in the student loan crisis. Half the people I know regret what they studied after they entered the workforce or regret attending at all because of their loans now.
Did you attend college in the 80s?
Dave Ramsey: "...So, you went $60,000 in debt just to get it?" Woman in defeated voice: "yeah". This woman so badly needed some wise counsel before she made such a bad decision.
Too many people, particularly young women, feel that they need a GRADUATE degree in order to keep up with the Joneses. It's almost as people feel inadequate if they don't have an advanced degree. It's a foolish and very costly assumption!
Wow. This. Women who are ambitious are more likely to pursue higher levels of education rather than go to trade school. It's absolutely hurting them more than their male peers. It's almost like a master's degree is their life qualifier in case they don't make any money with it.
Atleast it wasn't the super expensive tuba degree...
Paralegal certificate would have worked. Costs less money, legal field, and also get paid more than the criminology masters would have
Could be a lot worse. She could be making $40,000 like some social workers who have a masters degree.
those careers are grossly underpaid and you go into that as a calling, not the money. it isn't right what social workers, counselors, and teachers make
This is my mom. She makes nothing as a social worker. She doesn’t get regular raises because she works for a nonprofit 🙄 and she’s 59, still paying off her masters. And she expects me to get a masters 😬😬 nottt happening.
Those fields are so grossly underpaid because it is expected that those jobs are.for women married to high earning men, so they can afford to work as a hobby. Once a job.gets labeled as a female profession, salaries plummet in those jobs.
This is an old comment but let me just say I am a masters level social worker and while I agree we are often underpaid. However, as a medical social worker I and my colleagues generally make 70K plus. Six figures on many occasions. The earning potential is there. You just have to choose the correct path in the field.
@@TheMichelex20 How do you get into medical social work?
She should’ve got a paralegal degree if she couldn’t afford to be a lawyer
Nah RN degree...
I like how Dave said she has the potential to double that. It’s so encouraging because the caller sounded a little defeated, but she is on her way to financial freedom!!
Good lord, reminds me of my brother. He was in college for a while getting a degree in chemistry, then couldn’t get a job with it. Then he went an got a masters degree in business intelligence despite my warnings on it. I asked him to look for a job at a company, build experience and see if he could use his degree to get “minimum bachelors degree” jobs. But he went for the masters anyway saying that he knows someone that can help him get a job because it’s a “growing” field.
A year prior to graduating, I asked him to start seriously job hunting...and he said he’d be fine. Now he’s been out for atleast 2 years and still can’t get a job with the degrees. Now he realizes that he should have been building work experience the whole time. He is 36 and still can’t get a good job.
That's unfortunate, hopefully he's not down in the dumps. I got accepted into graduate school shortly after my undergraduate. I decided to postpone it 9 nine years for two reasons: 1. work experience 2. PAY OFF UNDERGRAD DEBT!
Please keep praying for your brother so that he has motivation and can get on his feet. I'd hate to see him depressed. I know many friends my age in same/similar situations.
@@nickmaestro im gonna keep it real wit you chief, he probably is depressed and struggling. I wouldn't be so happy in debt and with a degree i worked yesrs for that ended uo doing nothing for me. This is why we do research tho.
What is business intelligence? Can't he work for his university?
roxcyn It is in data analytics. It is a field that has a lot of openings, but most employers for this role care more about experience than a degree. Just like where I work, most of the people I know that do the role don’t have a degree...they just happen to be experience in the market that they cover.
Nicholas Emanuel Wheeler Thanks. I know my wife and I have been having him over for dinner quite a bit, and I bring him to the professional networking sessions that I get invites to.
I know where her thinking possibly came from. I had a teacher in middle school who showed a data chart with income rising with each degree earned but there was no explanation to backup the data because it was just picked up off a website. I don’t remember the teacher explaining about the importance of gaining the Master’s degree in a field of expertise either, as opposed to just getting a Master’s for the sake of it. The Master’s degree matters upon employer needs when it comes to making money.
Man, this is what happens when you let social media dictate your life.

A master’s in Criminology can be beneficial for certain careers (e.g., crime analyst, government positions, researcher, instructor at a college or university). The two main problems is how she went about getting her degree and not marketing herself well enough to get a career in the field. In graduate school, you can get assistantships or fellowships that pay for your tuition. These positions provide the student with the opportunity to work directly with a faculty member to gain experience and to serve as a mentor. It’s important that people network and seek out opportunities to pay for their education that do not require taking out so many student loans.
I have TWO MASTER'S DEGREES.
#1 I got a scaholarship for. 5years indentured servitude and it was free and clear.

She just paid off a $12,000 credit card debt and called back to be in more debt. Shaking my head. Why would get a degree and not use it. I pay off debt to be out of debt. Thats the point Mr. Ramsey teaches. Maybe she is just confused of what her calling is.
Why does everyone get in debt due to student loans? There should be some federal requirements disclosing employment and salary after graduations.
I didn't get through my masters interview. Best thing that ever happened to me. Would have been more years and money down the wrong track.

@BLACKest Knight
Yessir. The evidence tell you clues. Even without asking, two ways I found out about my ex’s bad credit was that she complained about her wages being garnished, and needing a co-signer for a car loan. Any guy would be brain dead to marry into that nonsense. 😅

why are credit card companies so friendly when they try to get people hooked , yet so unfriendly when you owe them money , its almost like they are trying to make a profit, but they say they care about people.
I moved to US (from the Netherland) few months ago. Most of my US friends told me that they have student debt (still a lot of debt even though they have been working for years) & somehow i feel so sorry for them. In the Netherland, My husband took student loan for his Bachelor & Master only €10.000 (€2000/year university fee, for 5 years study). He got train & metro “student” card for free to commute from home-university. Paid off the student loan within 4 years, with only €80 interest in total. Cheap & very low interest.
I dont know whats wrong with US system but def something is not right when your own citizen cant afford an education ☹️
U.S. system = greed at the expense of the citizens!
The system is like that to price certain people out aka people of color, minorities. Wealthy upper middle class Americans can afford to pay back the debt. This was designed to perpetuate the wealth gap in the US and it’s only getting worse.
Sebastian congrats! Thats a cool journey & indeed you do have a great personal decision. But somehow from your story, you convince me more about my point that “something is wrong with US education system”. Again, compared to Netherland where the education is very cheap there (around €2000/year even in top university) & the interest for student loan is crazily low. Therefore as a citizen, you dont have to sacrifice that much to enter university. Education is accessible for everyone. Ppl dont go to uni because they cant afford it, but more or less because they dont want to (ie: dont think university degree is for them, dont enjoy study, etc).

2 sides of the equation. Income or expenses. Looks like hers was the income. Ive been watching dave since he was introduced to me in my high school now.. 5 years later.. still watching. Love the advice & perspective. I produce my own content about finances now. Believe it or not, dave made me realize my passion....
I have two master's degrees and did not pay for either one. I used the company tutition re-embuirsement benefit., I just had to pay for books.
so in 8 months we should expect another call for some other debt she's accrued out of impulse.
I went to graduate school (in a marketable field, and working my way through) with a woman who was a housewife, married to a doctor, who just wanted a doctorate so she could be equal to her husband. But, she still wasn't going to be bringing home any serious money, so she still wasn't going to have any leverage in her marriage.
I LOVE YOU DAVE!
This is such an eye-opener…
Someone was a fan of the CSI shows and thought it would be superfun to get a masters in criminology. Paying off the loans? Husband will deal with that. Oops he's already gone.
LOL its literally every kid ive ever asked why she wants to be a criminologist, my little sister had friends like that and they influenced her to become one too, but she changed her mind when applying, thank goodness
I took out $33K to get paid $39K because I’m a teacher in Oklahoma. The goal is to pay it off in 3 years including my husband’s income.
Come to Texas. Avg salary for a HS teacher is around 60-70k
This is what happens when you grow up hearing go to school get a degree, and land a good job without context. A Masters in Yodeling is worth less than a 2 year Nursing (RN) degree, or 2 year tech degree with a certification.
Simple solution for her is to apply to be a college teacher with that degree she will make more than whatever she’s making now
Not necessarily. At a 4 year university usually a PhD is required to be a professor. And it often pays under $50k, especially to start. (I’m on the faculty of a 4 year university.)
She should teach. It is one of the only fields you are paid for your education. Plus a background in criminology will help with classroom management.
I'm getting a master's and I am 25 right now and have a semester left. I have a similar amount of debt. But I am getting mine so I can get higher positions since a master's is a requirement for those positions. I'm not worried. My Master's will have been worth it. But don't just get one to get one. Get one that you will actually use in your job or future career
Wow that is one expensive masters degree, I’m doing mine at the moment. Costing me 18,550 Aud because I applied for a scholarship worth $6000 but its to upskill within the area that I work. This situation is crazy!
This debt crisis getting out of hand.
Let me call my banker.
I'm sure she will find a sucker to pay this mess up for her... Ridiculous!
“ you is yo secret sauce” - I love Dave. 😂
I did the same thing with my undergrad. Paid $70k ‘just to get a degree’ with no plan. Stupid with a lot of zeros attached to it.
Major in what
What are you working as right now
Sounds like she was going to school while waiting for somebody to bail her out...
“Our discussion here is all about your shovel”
Wow! I am speechless.
60k for a Master's in Criminology? I'm very disappointed in this lady. She should have gone 300k in debt for a Master's in Feminist Dance Studies.
😂😂😂😂
Pheminyst
Dave ramsey facial expressions at 2:19 is so funny..hes like wth is going on??
I have a Bachelor degree in social work working in a nonprofit organization in Eastern KY making 25k a year. This area sucks. Its either medical field or mining.
Question, I’m having my B.S. in Marketing paid for by the USAF using tuition assistance, I have two years left on my contract of 6 at the moment. I’m highly debating getting out and pursuing a master’s since the GI Bill will pay for it, so I’m thinking why not?! Or should I just go find a job in my field and start my apprenticeship and learn the ropes, then go to grad school later? Either way, it’s “free,” I’m just wondering if should go ahead and get it now after I get out and in the groove of doing academic studies.
He gave solid advice.
