bipolar is no joke, overspending is one of the most common symptoms, especially when you have manic episode the first time you don't know what hit you and you feel invincible, shes really brave for asking for advice. Mental illness is truly a hard thing to deal with
Medication will need adjustments throughout her life. Her husband needs to be vigilant and watch out for relapse. They need to put in safeguards so she doesn't overspend.

A person can't just throw in the towel and blame being bipolar for everything. The illness certainly can be managed, treated and if necessary, medication can help.

My grandmother was bipolar, my dad had to keep her on a cash allowance and kept her credit card locked up from her. It's sad he had to do that but it was for her interest so she wouldn't go deep in debt. I hope her husband can this lady on the strait and narrow.

With bipolar disorder, if they are in a manic state, they will just spend money like crazy especially if they are not medicated. Then once they go back into their depressed state again, they feel extremely guilty. I hope everything works ouy for her.
With bipolar disorder it's like your brain is coming up with a billion ideas at once and you can't actually think too much about them you just do them. So yeah, it is an accident.

Read the book, "the body keeps the score". Been doing EMDR feedback and neuro feedback therapy for other spectrum disorders myself; recovered from prior schizophrenia episodes and now making further progress on many fronts. But the person has to be in a good place to begin to change... god bless.

The title of the video made it seem worse than the situation actually is. If she gets the needed treatment, goes back to work, the husband keeps an eye on her and they sell their other house they will be 100% debt free in 4-5 years

For everyone commenting on her spending so much money and blaming her illness, please educate yourself on mental illness, especially bi polar disorder. They go through phases of mania which can come in all sorts and everyones bi polar disease and the urges that come with it, are very different. Dave is trying to help people but she has to keep up with her treatment: therapy, medication, etc and then she has to have an accountability partner (her husband, parents) whoever is there for her.

The IGNORANCE on this thread of comments is sad but not unexpected... the narcissistic projection and vomiting of personal resentment is sad also.
Here you have a woman who is coming publicly to an expert about a shameful thing she did while dealing with illness she didn't know she had -- but now she's getting the treatment and therapy, back at work, and taking the initiative to get things cleaned up. Yes, there is emotional damage, but a journey into responsible recovery is exactly what you are ACTUALLY hearing.

bob marker being bipolar myself my husband and I have struggled with this. I can practically guarantee you that if the disorder had that big of impact with their money then their relationship was probably a bigger one hit harder. When I’m in a mixed state on the higher end of manic I start unintentionally scheming these massive plans and my husband will tell me no a hundred times but I can suddenly without realizing it manipulate him into agreeing as if he no longer has a say like a sick sales person. He’s feared that I would leave him or commit suicide if he didn’t just go along. Even though she has the diagnosis the spouse is always in the spinning cycle too.
Brizzle Perzzle Exactly my point - he let her manipulate him. Now they're so broke, she can't spend. Does this mean she'll leave him or commit suicide. The problem has to be addressed either before or after they're broke. Better to address it before.

Proud of her for being brave enough to call Dave after all that has happened! They can totally get out of debt again because they knows how. Her illness of course has to be addressed seriously and cannot be ignored.

I feel for people with bipolar disorder. I am diagnosed bipolar 1. It’s hard with finances. Even as a teenager I find myself having trouble controlling my impulse and spending money. I try to do my best with keeping my finances in check especially while going through college. It is a struggle, but will eventually be worth it!
My brother does this spending and more, like confronting people about how they park their car or smoking.
I didn’t diagnose him or dispense meds to him or encourage him to drink hard liquor with his meds. Common with this behavioral (not scientific/chemical) diagnosis is reckless spending and overall bad decisions. It’s even more problematic when he gets arrested and jailed by the police for these extreme behaviors (in addition to bail and lawyers, also fines/court costs)! Plus, his third marriage is breaking him and he’s become a poor man as a result.

I absolutely have mental illness but with me with age came some snapping out of it. I still have it but I have to remind myself not to let it get me. I think that all this excuse for mental illness actually hurts some people. Now this lady sounds completely sane to me but I don't know how she is when she is having her episodes. But I do feel this lady shouldn't get told over and over (with how sane she sounds here anyway) that her mental illness is something she can't help. When you start telling people they can't help something..they tend to do it more.

I DO think her husband, as well as her, should have been paying attention to her increase in manic symptoms but that does not mean they are an excuse.
I love how Dave can see the total picture and advise accordingly. It would be so easy to simply agree with this woman and say yep you messed up its all on you. Instead he correctly points out her husband has some accountability and how together they can avoid this financial tragefy from being repeated. Wish I could see things in such a balanced way

I’m on baby step 2, the other day I had a nightmare that I went to Target (my fav shopping place) I spent $400 and I was freaking out bc my whole budget was thrown off track!!!! Good thing it was just a dream and Target accepts refunds, which is a solution I didn’t think about in my dream. 😭😭
I am so mad at my debts! I could never again!!! I’m so focus, even though I currently have a small shovel it keeps me motivated to think of the end line and the possibility towards the end, specially with this new approach I have at life and finances.

She should double down and reduce the cost of her current residence. Her mortgage seems a little high. How much did she originally take out? My wife and I took out roughly $165,000 and $103,000 and we make $120,000 a year. The $103,000 is on a rental property we own. We make about $500 a month on it.

Kim D It depends on where in Washington. Are they in Seattle or a small town. You can find expensive and cheap houses anywhere. They can obviously get houses for $400,000 or possibly less.

Why is the question of the house possibly being a valuable income earning property not assessed once it's determined they have huge income? It's very costly to buy/sell a home, lots of equity lost in that deal.

He could not prevent her disorder, and it is not that easy to get a grip on the symptoms in someone else.
For anyone claiming this is just a problem related to self-discipline clearly doesn't understand the nature of this psychiatric disorder. My friend's father did something similar (albeit he had a lot less money to blow) when he quit his job suddenly, cashed out his 401k, and spent it all on a fully-equipped Toyota Sequoia that he happily paid full sticker price for. My adopted cousin was diagnosed bipolar at age 10, and he would routinely disappear from my aunt and uncle's house for days on end during manic phases, only to be found by the local police department, not having slept for 72 hours, living behind the local Winn Dixie.
If your friends father had bought a luxury car, I would say it was a mid-life crisis or something. But since it's a Toyota Sequoia, I say differently.
Dave I'm debt free but it's hard to stay debt free when I'm having credit cards thrown at me from the bank and I need to take credit out in order to get credit up, to buy my house. The numbers are big, but as long as they can maintain that income they'll be fine. I didn't hear an equity number on their primary residence, but it's possible that they could downsize house and really clean this up very very fast.

As a person who's bipolar its like being two different people, with little episodes of clarity in between. Mine is very severe, but its definitely something you can over come and control.
The depression phase and the regret for the spending (or other risky manic behavior). then the cycle resumes and they are back in mania spending to make up for the period of regret. I wonder truly how many of these callers Dave gets are undiagnosed bipolar.
The good thing about my manic phase is i got OCD with the budgeting after attending to FPU. If I do go back to being an impulsive shopper, my husband is there to restrain me lol

What was an FPU coordinator doing with credit cards? Seems like somebody wasn’t practicing what they were preaching. If all of the credit accounts were closed like they should be to be an FPU Coordinator then it is hard to get in such a large hole.

Hello USA my advice is to keep spending in deficit into perpetuity then print more money to increase the volume but devalues all the labor of your people by making each dollar in their pocket worth less and less. Have a bunch candidates blow hot air about it but continue on the spend spend spend train! Way to be. That’s like saying someone over cleaning when they have OCD isn’t because of their mental disorder. She gets manic episodes that she can’t control and becomes highly depressed afterwards. If she wasn’t diagnosed and claimed mania because of bipolar then it would’ve be an insult to them but she is one of them
I'm bipolar too. Spending that amount of money and blaming it on your illness is a cop-out. There were many, many bad decisions that lead up to the situation.
She lacks discipline. Her illness only makes it even more important to be an adult. Her illness isn't holding her back. Her ego is.

Bipolar disease can range from more mild, and easily controlled with medications, to very severe. Just because you are able to control your condition doesn’t mean that others are able to as easily or effectively.

If it was simply a "choice" as you wrongly believe then why do people with mental issues need medication, mental health professionals, and reinforcement from friends and family to lead a normal functional life?
I try to spend as LITTLE as possible each month. Of course, I'm a single white male and don't have to remodel after each HGTV episode. I'm retired at 54 with zero debt. Can I run out and pay cash for the latest electronic gizmo or SUV/Crossover, yes I can. I'm very happy with my life and that's the difference between me and someone who's 200K-300K in debt at my age. I know some people will hate you for it but I have bipolar and understand. I refused to date anyone who drank or used drugs recreationally, even if they seemed to have it together. I didn’t want the stress of what MIGHT happen in the future.
