Rarely, mostly never, hear someone speak this truth that I also believe to be true!!!!! Thank you. Couldn't have said it better. I think there might be mold in coffee but I'm not sure. Whatever, it is absolutely addictive physically and psychologically immediately. And it's a big lie, makes me sick. The next time I quit so be for good. Never say one cup.
Drinking your 1st cup of coffee after going caffeine free for almost a year was the most euphoric experience. I used to drink upwards of 500 mg a day for years and years, and I had built up a tolerance. Stopping at the gas station a few times a day to get an energy drink and it almost making me sleepy instead of giving me energy, I knew I needed to Completely take a break from caffeine. I’m about two years in drinking coffee again and caffeine, now 1 cappuccino in the morning, really puts me in an incredible mood.
I have not been drinking coffee for any effect except that it tastes good. I have it down to one cup each morning. That don't sound right. Does it? There must be an effect or I would not be doing that. I drink tea throughout the day. I am going to cut that down to three cups per day and totally eliminate coffee. I have been sluggish, urinate frequently and sleep poorly, waking up throughout the night. Thank you for this video. A lot to think about. I will share this
Tea has L-theanine in addition to caffeine. The effects of both together is what makes drinking tea a more pleasant experience. L-theanine produces a calming/relaxing and more focused state. Lowers blood pressure. This balances the effects of caffeine. I suppose this is why a mild cup of green tea is often suggested at night.
I cut out caffeine from my diet nearly 25-years ago due to it giving me extreme pain. Each time I accidently ingest it now, I am utterly amazed that people can function on it.
Sadly, it is because our amazing bodies will adjust to the sheer destruction most people put it through...it can adapt, but, this stuff does take its toll. Drugs come in many forms...none are good ;)
I had a baby 4 months early and she’s in the NICU and they give her caffeine to stimulate her brain & gets it going like it needs to. It benefits them and I thought that was so crazy!!

@@BuiltInBrooklyn no. i'm so tired of that cr%p. I quitted sugar for 2 monthes, i was ok. But I definitely did not feel better than when i consume sugar. So no. Sugar makes me happy, just consume it moderately. The same with coffee, it makes me happy. I drink it moderately.
@@timm_Rudiger Sugar and coffee are different "beasts". I wouldn't lump them together even though people literally do it on a daily but that's not really what I mean. What I mean is sugar is way easier to over do and the detriment is evident in the chronic and metabolic disease epidemic and coffee on the other hand while still addictive it's way harder to over do and much less harmful than sugar if you do find yourself in the upper limit of what is ideal to use on the daily. For most people 1 or 3 cups of coffee is fine however as for sugar 20 to 40 teaspoon of sugar per day is probably not OK for most people and this is what the average american consumes on the daily of both of these.
I’ve used 2 extra strength Excedrin just before exams or other mentally challenging activities to get the mental acuity boost without having to run to the bathroom in the middle of an exam! It really does make a big difference.
How does all this relate to people who get a calming effect from caffeine? For example: Caffeine used to put me to sleep when I was an occasional user. Now that I use it when I have a migraine (I have chronic migraine,) it doesn't put me to sleep, but it still has a calming effect on me.
Recently gave up coffee (have one cup of tea in the morning, then no more caffeine) and it has been my most significant decision in a battle with anxiety. My anxiety has gone from overwhelming and immobilising, to practically non-existent, all in matter of three weeks. The effects were almost instant. It’s left me feeling there must be a pretty forceful caffeine lobby.
Even decaf coffee gives you a reaction? I cannot drink a 1/4 can of pepsi in a hour or it will spin up my anxiety then adrenaline kicks in and i go supernova , When i go to the dentist i tell them no epinephrine cause that starts a chain reaction . I find the best way to recover from a caffeine overdose is drink lots of water and flush your body out of it . If i ever do drink a pepsi which has 55mg of caffeine i can only drink it over a 12 hr period , but not all at once
A video of how a pre workout supplement works in the body would be pretty awesome. How the different ingredients function in the body during a workout.
so interesting. i have high tolerance to caffeine - can't tell if it's working. i thought i'm adding energy to my system when in fact caffeine is blocking adenosine from attaching to its receptor!
I want to share a pitfall if caffeine. I have been taking pre workout drinks for about 20yrs. So much that now I have acid reflux. In my case it was “silent” reflux where it wasn’t heartburn but it demonstrated as a cough. The acid reflux ended up causing a small growth on my throat from irritation. I know share my story with young kids at the gym to not even start. Save your health and money.
So I'm epileptic and I have found caffeine to be a trigger at times but not always. I assume adenosine is kind of needed for someone like myself to help suppress the electrical activity on the individual cells to avoid the potential for misfiring? So any interruption of this process can cause issues I can only assume (makes sense to me) Nonetheless, I love the video
Interested in caffeine and athletic performance. My current understanding is that it aids performance in multiple ways, one of which is pain tolerance.
Decaf coffe also have health benefits, although less than regular coffee, so I drink both, reserving caffinated coffee to workouts or times when I'm tired.
Anything the Government say to eat i just do the opposite. I recommend reading “Health and Beauty Mastery” by Julian Bannett that book is a real eye opener about shocking stuff health industry is doing! I completely changed my habits
Would be interesting to learn about the differences between how neurodivergent and neurotypical brains react to caffeine! I take caffeine in order to sleep, as it has the opposite effect.
yeah, im definitely addicted, but i do try to make it work for me. i love coffee as an artificial mood enhancer. even on a terrible day it can make bad things glide off me. i wont drink it every day, it tends to dehydrate me and i'll cut back harder if i can feel the effects waning. i also prefer to drink coffee when im already well rested, when im tired it just makes me jittery and tired.
Is there any chance you can investigate the effects of caffeine on an ADHD brain? I find this video fascinating but it works the opposite was on me, I began taking caffeine tablets to counteract the effects of strong pain killers in the morning, I also drink 2 cups of strong coffee in the morning too! (Yes, my doctor did tell me that it would be fine to take it). I can go to bed right after consuming all that caffeine and sleep well..... So why, Whats so different about MY receptors? Thanks for this video, I am sharing it with very intelligent friends who drink a lot of coffee :)
I'm afraid they're still no proper researcher of ADHD+coffee. But it's too common for adhders to have this relationship with caffeine to be coincidence))
Would love a video on ATP. I was heavily addicted to caffeine and had to go off it cold turkey. The withdrawal headache was excruciating, lasted 3 days, and OTC pain killers did nothing.
Does upregulation affect how tired one feels, the rate of absorption of adenosine, or the maximum amount of adenosine that can be absorbed? Or, is the rate at which ATP is broken down more significant?
Thank you for your video! I do consume coffee everyday after lunch, and this one elevates my focus in the afternoon. Any extra bit won’t do the trick, so 1 cup per day for me (and must be after lunch) is the optimal amount to me. At this amount I won’t feel anxiety or other adverse effects but just calm and calamity, and hence can focus on the afternoon work.
I loved the explanation of physiological basis of caffeine and adenosine interplay! I was finally able to understand the general idea of it, thank you! I would be very interested in a video where you'd talk about possible neuroprotective effects of caffeine on the brain. I think it's a topic worth exploring, though I personally find the literature confusing. :x
I used to drink coffee like it was water, there was one time I was abroad for work, it was all tea and water! I felt sick after a long day, and my boss said it was caffeine withdrawal. My doctor recommended cutting back, last year replaced it with hot chocolate. This year I returned to coffee but only 3 cups, 1 in the morning, a white coffee in the afternoon, and 1 at night. When I have a headache, I take medication with coffee to speed up the effects.
Taking coffee causes various muscle cramp. It is probably due to the losing of minerals through urination. Is there any other reason? Should I be concerned? I am almost 45 and south Asian guy. I mean is this normal?
I love love coffee and tea. On days I am sluggish I drink Celsius. 200mg per can. I have become so used to it, it doesn’t hit like the first few times. So now I drink 2-3 per week instead of every day
1 to 2 cups and I feel like I have adjusted to the universe 😁But more than that or at the wrong time and my sleep is ruined. I also suffer from anxiety so I take supplements for it like ashwagandha which really helps offset the bad effects of caffeine.
Why does it cause anxiety? What’s the mechanism of that effect? I once had four double-shot espressos in a day, and the last one caused pretty noticeable anxiety, so that I couldn’t even focus on my work.
I had Supra Ventricular Tachycardia . Eventually having an RF Ablation. I am no stranger to ADENOSINE pushes intraveinously to "snap my heart rate back form 180 beats /minute to normal. Can you explain why ADENOSINE pushes are so dramatic to the patient and why only ambulance paramedics are allowed to carry it or the Emergency ward ? Plus why do they administer Adenosine ? Cheers.
i love both tea and coffee. Coffee has no effect on me that I can tell. It will not keep me awake at all. I drink it because I love the taste. But Im happy for just one a day. Tea, though, is my great love. Still no effects but utter delight for my first cup LOL. This video was interesting!
Interesting about how those adenosine receptors increase. How long is it until they get removed naturally? Would you make a video about how cinnamon and nutmeg work in the body because you're able to explain things clearly.
So with it making the heart beat more frequently and possibly more forcefully, does this cause the heart to deteriorate or have future problems in the long run?
Just do what makes you feel good. Reseachers are confused. Many years they told us that fat was 3vil and that carbohydrates are way to go, but decades later, they flipped it and say the opposite- fats are great, carbohydrates are sugar
I try to keep my caffeine intake to the morning. This way at night I can get to sleep without much trouble. If you have it anywhere near mid-day it can cause issues if you go to bed at a reasonable hour.
It does take about 12hrs for caffeine to fully exit the system. That's why it is suggested to limit your caffeine intake to max 8hrs before sleep. The minor caffeine content in some teas has been shown to be fine for me if I consume it at night.
I recently saw a video by Layne Norton about a study that implies creatine can reduce the effects of the mental fatigue caused by lack of sleep and this helps explain those results.
Coffee is great, just as long as you're not having negative impacts. A Coffee high followed by lows later, interrupted sleep or insomnia and in my case, I was taking it just to prevent the withdrawal headache I would otherwise get within 24 hrs of my last dose. It was affecting my adrenals and keeping me stressed. Caffeine and the other compounds in coffee keep us addicted...it is a drug/stimulant and should be used cautiously - definitely not for children or teens.
I stopped drinking caffeinated beverages 30 years ago after pre-op fasting and enduring an excruciating headache from caffeine withdrawal. Now it's herbal tea, plain water, or milk.
i drink white tea every day and occassionally caffeinated coffee. When I drink coffee, I'll usually drink it 3 or 4 days in a row and then not all for a couple or more weeks. The biggest thing I notice is that when I am tired and in need of sleep, drinking coffee, the few times I've done so when tired, makes me even more tired. Instead of a "rush" I'll get just the opposite. Strange.
Caffeine is business for millions of people around the globe and many people got married had a family also got beaten up murdered because of caffeine socialising.

Jonathan, Your videos are always informative and bring joy as it increases one's knowledge. In US, in 16 states, the whites have 35% or more obesity problem and blacks have in 38 states! Can you please do a video(we are entering into chemistry) on ATP, Protein, Carb, Fat explaining which of the three can be converted to glucose and what organ depends on glucose and which organ in the body can convert macronutrients to glucose without ketones and what happens to kidneys in the long term when people go on keto diet and how lack of carbs can affect sex mood or libido. There is so much misinformation at chemistry level. I have seen pharmacists not even knowing much aboug physiology and anatomy. No wonder every drug has got zillion side effects. Cancer happens at chemical and not biological level. No wonder even the treatment is not good without the side effects let alone cure. It will be greatly appreciated if you can do video on it. Thank you

I drink coffee after lunch, and then do some power nap about 10-20 minutes (1 hour if I get lucky) after that, it's like waking up freshly in the morning after a good night sleep
This is a smart thing. I have tested and seen some research on this. Sleeping washes away the tiredness and the adenosine from the receptors. Caffeine takes about 20-30min to properly take effect. By the time you wake up, the mind is rested, the receptors are free. The caffeine gives you a bump without the danger of a big crash.

Caffeine gives me migraines for whatever reason. I'm the only person I'm aware of that's like this. People I know that also suffer from migraines are the complete opposite and seem to benefit from drinking coffee instead.
The big question for me is will you be less focussed generally if you drink coffee because it gives that brain spike or will i my brain not work worse when i dont have it?
I don't know if anyone addressed this in the comments, but is there any known relationship between coffee drinking and narcolepsy? After at least a dozen sleep studies, I was diagnosed with narcolepsy in 2021 -- at age 64 (?) ! How did I get to be 64 before I was diagnosed? If there's a relationship between coffee consumption and narcolepsy, I'm guessing it's tenuous at best: I started drinking coffee when I was in my teens.
@@graciegrey4049 Good luck! I hope we both manage to kick it for good 😁

Nothing wrong with with a cup of coffee
@@johnnywilson7799 stop for months and you'll feel better. Though at this age, just don't worry about it. I'm in my 20s, I want to optimize my health.
It helps with gout too, as long as you keep up your water intake as well.

I cut out caffeine from my diet nearly 25-years ago due to it giving me extreme pain. Each time I accidently ingest it now, I am utterly amazed that people can function on it.
If I drink caffeinated coffee I feel like I’ve been hit by a train the next morning. It also makes me very anxious and jittery!
The placebo effect is a hell of a drug
The perks of DNA ❤ Tk God I'm on the side that caffeine does wonders ❤☕️❤️
Sadly, it is because our amazing bodies will adjust to the sheer destruction most people put it through...it can adapt, but, this stuff does take its toll. Drugs come in many forms...none are good ;)
Maybe it's the mold in coffee. I had to find one that I could tolerate. We are all so different.
Watching this while I’m drinking coffee and my brain is like hell yeah!!! Coffee!! ☕️
8:23 lolol the joke 😂
I had a baby 4 months early and she’s in the NICU and they give her caffeine to stimulate her brain & gets it going like it needs to. It benefits them and I thought that was so crazy!!
So---does that mean it's okay, or even potentially beneficial for prenatal neuro-development, to drink coffee in moderation while pregnant?
It helps me function in a somewhat human way
Because you’re dependent on it, if you quit for long enough you’ll realize that you never really needed it and that you actually feel better without it!

How does all this relate to people who get a calming effect from caffeine? For example: Caffeine used to put me to sleep when I was an occasional user. Now that I use it when I have a migraine (I have chronic migraine,) it doesn't put me to sleep, but it still has a calming effect on me.
hot liquid is the comfort, not the stimulant caffeine. Caffeine can help migraines though. Separate things going on.
@@b64771 I drink cold Coka Cola for my caffeine. I'm also not talking about comfort. Calming and comfort are very different.
Adrenaline gives you pain tolerance. Caffeine doesn't aid in anything, it's a stimulant...you'll get the hit, then you get the crash.
Decaf coffe also have health benefits, although less than regular coffee, so I drink both, reserving caffinated coffee to workouts or times when I'm tired.
Doesn't decaf still have caffeine?

Where can I get?
Would be interesting to learn about the differences between how neurodivergent and neurotypical brains react to caffeine! I take caffeine in order to sleep, as it has the opposite effect.
Same! I have adhd and had to give up coffee because it either makes me sleepy, or gives me horrible anxiety and jitters.
yeah, im definitely addicted, but i do try to make it work for me. i love coffee as an artificial mood enhancer. even on a terrible day it can make bad things glide off me. i wont drink it every day, it tends to dehydrate me and i'll cut back harder if i can feel the effects waning. i also prefer to drink coffee when im already well rested, when im tired it just makes me jittery and tired.

Can’t live without coffee. I love the mental alertness it gives me and I love doin puzzles when I feel alert.
It's likely as harmful or more harmful but you'll never hear it as long as it's an addictive money maker
And my reaction is exactly the opposite-tea is blah to me, and coffee is much better. I can’t understand why anyone would drink tea.
Some history with this science. Aztec warriors would ritually drink coffee before battles.

Caffeine also increases CSF production in the brain, so is a treatment for cranial and spinal CSF leaks.
So with it making the heart beat more frequently and possibly more forcefully, does this cause the heart to deteriorate or have future problems in the long run?
Quite the opposite. Watch out for pesticides though
Why do we always get conflicting answers . One day, coffee is ok. Another day, it isn't.

i dont think its the coffee. its the day. 😅
One of the very first coffee drinks was made in a town called Mocha in Yemen.
I recently saw a video by Layne Norton about a study that implies creatine can reduce the effects of the mental fatigue caused by lack of sleep and this helps explain those results.
Can the number of adenosine receptors decrease again if someone stop ingesting caffeine?

Strange.
Is the effect of caffeine on the cardiovascular system also directly related to adenosine receptor blocking?

I drink coffee after lunch, and then do some power nap about 10-20 minutes (1 hour if I get lucky)
after that, it's like waking up freshly in the morning after a good night sleep
This is a smart thing. I have tested and seen some research on this. Sleeping washes away the tiredness and the adenosine from the receptors. Caffeine takes about 20-30min to properly take effect. By the time you wake up, the mind is rested, the receptors are free. The caffeine gives you a bump without the danger of a big crash.

That's what you're supposed to do for optimal restorative napping, dose caffeine, then sleep for 20 minutes, you'll wake up much more alert as by then the caffeine is kicking in and you've rested.

I've never noticed any effect from coffee -- except that it tastes good and feels good going down my throat.
