There is so much else that accounts for the success of your channel. Here's a list of things I appreciate about this channel and wish other RUclipsrs also practiced:
    - Your videos are carefully planned. You get straight to the topic, the introduction moves fast, and you are always on point; you never ramble nor do you ever seem at a loss about what to say any any given moment or how to transition to the next topic, from beginning to end. This kind of planning communicates respect for the viewer's time.
    - You never talk down to your audience. The explanations you offer are always clear and easy to follow, but they never compromise on technical accuracy or conceptual depth. Whenever I watch your videos I feel that I'm being treated as an intelligent person by another intelligent person who happens to know more than I do; I never feel underestimated. Too many travel channels make this mistake: they offer shallow descriptions of places and cultures, betraying the assumption that viewers cannot digest anything better.
    - Your videos have an implicit ethic that I admire. Your discussion of photography as a human activity and of the nonhuman environments we photograph always comes from a place of open-mindedness and regard for values that I, at least, share. You manage to talk about photography as a highly demanding hobby that can nonetheless be noncompetitive, and where effort to excel must be limited by boundaries such as our respect for birds and our enjoyment of the activity itself.
    - Finally, the good humor and modesty!

I was going to write something like this. But the best I can do is "what he said".
This, in a large nutshell, is why I subscribed. I'm a beginner with an old D3300 and a couple of lenses and mostly take the "out of every 100 photos I might get a good one" approach. Simon's getting me down to 1 in maybe 75! :D

One of the best takeaways from every video you have posted is your outro of “I know you can do it”. Making any sort of content takes a lot of work and can be very disheartening when no one sees it. All of your amazing teaching really adds to that cherry on top. Love your work and channel!

To me, the most important thing above all is to JUST BE YOU! Countless people fail on RUclips because they feel they need to become a "character." Not only do people often pick up on that very quickly, but you can only be "someone else" for so long before it takes a very negative emotional toll on you.

  • @jackywacky4361

Great advice, and I am happy to see you are satisfied. Being a RUclipsr is very similar to running your own business. You should upload things people want to see, just like businessman should offer product/service that people need. And when the growth becomes real, you can consider hiring people to help you run your channel more efficiently. The most difficult part is starting and growing of course, but consistency and hard work (with a little bit of help from Fame- ster of course) will always pay off at the end.

Simon, love your channel and content but it’s easy for RUclipsrs who are doing well to tell other people they too can do well on YT. I have been making content for over 8 years in a niche subject and have barely cracked 50k subs. The reality is it’s not all roses and a much greater number of channels are going to remain in the shadows compared to the small amount that see great growth. Sorry that’s just my jaded rant. Keep up the good work, yours is the only photography channel I watch.

It would be nice if RUclips would present more niche subjects, since we are often stuck in the bubble algorithms serve us. But for people who like to search and explore, RUclips is a gold mine. Simon,
    SUCCES:
Congrats with your RUclips success (progression). I think your success comes from the fact that you are able to connect with your videos to starters and more experienced fotographers (full framers and APSC-ers) because your videos are educational in the way of subject and clear explanation and substatination (underpinning) and with a good start and closure. I also like the fact that you stay away from “doing brands”.
    STARTING:
I started again with photography and videoing after retirement. I visited a lot of channels in order to learn from videos and find reliability; underpinning.
Your videos besides mainly two other channels helped me to select my second camera (a6700 after second hand RX10 iii) and lens selection. 11mm f1.8; 16-55 f2.8; 56mm f1.4. Good standard zoom en fast lens at start and end of the range from de standard zoom.
My long lens is still the RX10 (600mm on 1” sensor) and also did buy this week (I rented it last year with TC2.0) the very expensive 70-200 GM; now I can grow in time starting with a reach from 300 f2.8 later to 400 f4 and to 600 f5.6 with one lens by buying teleconverters. And later on perhaps the nice new sigma 500 (= 750 f5.6). Now it’s time to spend more time in being active with my cameras.
    SHORTS:
I think shorts would (could) improve your channel for the purpose of:
    > showing your selection of nicest foto’s and videos
    > announcing your next long video.
    QUESTION ON GIMBAL HEAD:
Now i am going to use my video head for bird photography.
Could you make a video on the use of a gimbal head and the requirements for it.
I came to the conclusion that “goedkoop is duurkoop” or explained in English a cheap buy turnes into a expensive buy. I already returned a not that cheap video gimbal and don’t wanna make a bad decision with a gimbal head.
    Greetings from the Netherlands.

Other things about you that keep me coming back: You are authentic in that you don't try to be goofy or gimmicky, thinking that by trying to entertain me that I will stick around. Instead, it is your content that holds my interest. You have a great speaking voice, modulating your speech so we don't go to sleep, and you enunciate well so that your pronunciation doesn't get in the way of the message, and you are focused and positive in your delivery. I like that you don't ramble and get off topic. I only give myself so much time to watch RUclips videos, so I really look at the play time. I appreciate all those and I think those are speaking skills that anyone can learn with practice.

As a viewer - not a content creator, I have my own strategy when it comes to giving thumbs up. After watching a video of my favorite RUclipsr ( for example Simon d'Entremont ), I always give a thumbs up to mark which video I have already seen. If I've been busy over the last month and unfortunately haven't been able to watch last few videos, when the day of chill out will comes - one Saturday or Sunday I lay on the couch and watch the last few videos posted. I've started my journey just two weeks ago using your videos HEAVILY as my main resource. You can see how much your time spent making these videos has helped my photography out the gate. I've made cartoons and done voice acting, but never this. And thanks to you, I already have my first gig under my belt!!! Thanks Simon!

I'm not surprised you have been so successful. I will even watch your videos about things I feel reasonably competent in, and its worth it every time. When you have the chance to hear from someone who truly understands what they are talking about there is always something new to learn, or a new way to think about what you already know. You deserve all your success.

I started watching your channel about 6 months ago and I think your videos are really well made with a lot of info I can learn from. I did run across one of your older videos and while it was well made it seemed like you were talking to the camera vs now as it feels like you are talking to the viewer. You definitely look more comfortable making videos now. Congratulations on your growth and success.

There are so many really boring wildlife photographers on youtube who have never achieved anything and yet still manage to try and get people to watch their videos, you have done well. Your people will be proud of you.

Great video Simon! Congratulations on your success, I have no doubt you'll hit the 1 million mark. I am an aspiring photographer and I came acrossed your channel by typing in "how to..." do something. Your explanations were very clear and easy to understand. I decided to browse through your other videos and literally found an answwer to just about every photography question I had. What really got me hooked is I asked you a question and you actually took the time to respond. Thats huge! You have helped me a great deal in my photography and I appreciate all that you do! I wish you continued success! Thank you!

The reason I like it, you’re not trying to be artistic or funny or anything else you just gives straight advice and your work is better than most of other people that are on this platform.

You are my favorite RUclips resource for photography info because the material you present is the most relevant, accessible and practical, but I also have to put a word in for your intro music. Listening to it while your photos roll just makes me feel good.

I hate stupid repetitive clickbait like “it’s over” or “This is the end”. I also hate videos where they show 3 clips at beginning walking to a location (that seems like a lot of work setting up cameras then walking back to get them. Love your channel and hope we can get you as a guest on our club one day!!!

I mainly watch/choose content from my recommendations list and 99% of the time you're at the top when you've released a new video. I've watched all of them and they've helped me out massively. I'm relatively new to photography but looking at my photos from the past 2 or 3 years, I can clearly see the photos I'm getting now are far better than before! Thank you for your keen attitude and commitment to producing high quality, informative content.

As.a photography newbie- your site has been the best because you show us examples of exactly what you mean while you are explaining. you actually get technical and explain just enough of the science that backs up the art. But then you also explain what looks good to the eye. So all of t hose aspects are what I hope you will keep up on your channel!! Thanks Simon!

Simon: Maybe you could use shorts as visual aids to supplement your other education work? Side-by-side comparisons come to mind, maybe to show exposure differences, effects of editing differently, composition differences, etc...? Love your work by the way. I've learned a ton from you, much appreciated.

Thanks for another useful video (a bit longer than usual). I follow your channel (and have watched all your videos) because:
    1. They don't waste time with intros and outros (exactly like you mention) - they have the perfect length for my limited attention span
    2. You delivery the right amount of experience and knowledge without being loud, aggressive, opinionated or wasteful with my time
    3. You seem sympathetic
    4. Your skill is obvious
In short, my photography is improved drastically since watching your videos (I wish I had been able to view them 20 years ago).
Again, thank you and I will be hopefully be put it in practice when we visit your neck of the woods at the end of the year :)

Well done Simon! I have been a keen photographer all my days from the Brownie 127 when i was a child to the Lumix 300/330 via SLRs and hot sticky dark rooms. With seriously degraded eyesight, I no longer take many photos but enjoy listening to your voice describing your pictures and methods. You have beautiful intonation. I think it was your Milky Way pictures that attracted me to my first click. Thank you. Apologies for typing errors.

I totally agree with all your points to have a successful channel. Another point which I understand is not mentioned by youtubers is that you have to be likeable. If your content is exceptionally good you can get away with it but not often. I'm sure if I went hunting I could find hundreds of photographers who are knowledgeable with great content telling me how to be a better photographer but there will only be a few I will follow. If we all made EXACTLY the same video, some people will have more likes and followers than others and that's just how life is.

I personally like pov style of channels in photography, so your first videos got my attention and you were new and seen you do some collabs with Gavin when he lived in the same area. I seen the switch from that style to more of a teaching style channel. That was a good move for you as you have a natural teaching style that I think newcomers to photography can understand and when they are having issues you have probably done a video on how to correct them and become better photographers. You are an amazing photographer and I just enjoys watching the content you produce, and you shoot Canon! :-) Congrats on your success and I hope to see you hit 1mil subs here soon, "I know you can do it!".
