This goes to show that a 12 year old camera still takes better looking photos than the last generation flagship smartphones in 2024. Great video and nice pictures!
Unless new phones increase sensor size and lens quality they will never reach the quality of these digicams. Image processing can’t compete with optical quality for a trained eye
The Rx100 can and will go anywhere with you and the kind of pictures you get is phenomenal. I have the mark 1 and have gotten absolutely gorgeous photos of the places I went, of my friends and family and everything in between. It's a camera that almost feels like it sticks to you wherever you go. No hassle of bags, extra lenses and other stuff.
Great video! I have an RX100 mk3, even more beat up than yours and it's still ticking! When I look at my family photos, whether taken with my Nikons, Sonys or Olympus, it is the ones taken with my little Sony that stand out a memorable. In the early 70s I shot with a GAF pocket camera made by Chinon with a 38mm lens, a focal length I abandoned. Those photos are all about family memories and are priceless. Today, photography is going towards graphic arts, with sky replacements and changing colours of a dress or car. I can guarantee you no future generation will remember or want to keep those. I'm saving my money to buy the latest RX100 and recommend to all to get one too. As much as I love my Olympus EM1m2, nothing beats the no-pressure to produce great photos like an RX100. Shoot souvenirs and family with this tiny wonder and not unremembered art shots with 5kg of camera equipment.
Yes, I completely agree. It is often the photos I take on cheap/old cameras that I cherish the most. I also have an e-m1m2, and even though it's a small camera, I find myself taking the rx100 more places.
This was exactly the video I was looking for. Great idea to let the photos do the talking and the price and lack of worry over beating it up a bit definitely have swayed me to get this over the later iterations. Thanks!
Most of my cameras began life around 2014 / 2015 when it seemed to be a golden age for digital cameras. Newest is a Sony RX100 Vii. I like your video, old cameras are brilliant value for money. I'm not bothered about specs, it either works or it doesn't at this level. Its a great little camera!
Yes, I agree. I've tried several cameras from the 2014/2015 era and they've convinced me camera technology hasn't advanced as much as some of the marketing departments want us to believe. A few years ago I owned the a7rii (which I believe was released in 2015) and it was a fabulous piece of technology even 5-6 years after release.
I own my RX 100 since 2015. Unbeatable form factor. An EVF would be very nice in bright conditions. But the auto mode is also quite good, so that a blind shot delivers usable images too.
I bought a RX100 mk1 a few months ago and I've been having fun kitting it out. People love their EVFs and bendy screens but I feel like an even an extra quarter inch of thickness or 60 extra grams matters when the major point of the camera is to be pocketable, and I've found the screen to be perfectly serviceable, especially if you set the screen to manual full brightness or the "Sunny Weather" mode. After the screen protector I got some tiny 6mm split rings and put them through the miniscule cord hole so I could attach a leather wrist strap, and a 42mm MagFilter ring to use with a polarizer. More extravagantly I 3D printed a custom grip based on the Hasselblad Stellar (which itself was just a rebranded mk1) that I found on a 3d model website and attached it with a special craft double-sided "SuperTape". I have also ended up shooting manual in RAW+jpeg on black and white mode, as the camera's B&W science hides a lot of sins with the sensor especially in low light, and I can always revert the RAW to full color in an editor if I want to make a real picture out of it. Setting the control ring to ISO mode lets me dial in the shutter speed and aperture manually and then choose the ISO and has proven the simplest way for me to manage the exposure triangle.
The thing is: the camera isn't so important. It's the photographer makes the photos. The art, view and the skills of the photgrapher is more important.
I don’t exactly disagree but saying that the tools doesn’t matter is not the full truth.. especially the control of the settings is IMO important for a good photographer. Sure you can take great pictures with any camera, but it’s easier to reach your full potential if you can control stuff like the exposure triangle and the focus mode of your tool
The real beauty in the MK1 to MK3’s magic lies in the processor/jpg processing where lots of highlight details can be maintained and they look great straight out of camera. Sometimes, a smaller sensor makes it easier for a specific processing system to perform well, resulting in very pleasing jpgs. In many countries, even old Mk3s are still not cheap, which is a testament to its great performance and quality.
Great video! I've been alternating between my RX100M5 and my A7RIV a lot in recent months, and thinking that people who mainly shoot with a standard zoom lens on a full frame body would actually be a lot better off with using an RX100 for that. Incredible piece of kit, absolutely punches above its weight. As for cropping, I've been able to get Instagram-usable results cropped all the way to 1.5 megapixels!
I love photography and every camera nowadays is more than good enough to let us capture the moments we love and cherish. You definitely prove that in this video! 👍
Bought this beauty back in 2016 for a pretty penny not gonna lie BUT 7-8 years later she’s still going very strong. It had a lot of buzz when it came out and I remember it being vlogger’s camera of choice for a bit (which is funny) BUT- I believe it’s underrated now. Like you said- you can get it for under $200 (which is so much less than I did ooooof) and I think it’s for sure worth it
I have this camera and love it. With regards to the bubbling screen, just get a razor blade and pry off the rear screen protector. It makes 2 minutes and makes it look brand new again!
Thanks for the excellent video. I just ordered one of these online. I’ve been looking for something to take on a cruise this fall when I want something really small. Looking at your sample photos reassures that I made a good choice. Saved a nice chunk of change over the other cameras I was considering also.
I purchased my RX-100 and leather case back in 2012. Glad l spent the extra money on the case. Because my camera is still in perfect condition. Always love this camera and still use it all the time. Because of its lite weight and 1” capable sensor, I’m actually now setting it up on my Pentax spotting scope for (digiscoping) birds.
I think it is on a par with a Ricoh GR in terms of image quality and in addition it has a telescopic lens!! Practically you can get many more points of view! You who also have the Rico GR, is there a lot of difference in image quality?
I bought a used mk3 recently as a backup for the Canon G7x that I use when cycling. I shoot while riding and someday I'll drop and break it, so wasn't about to buy something new and pricey for that. The Sony takes great shots, but shooting one handed while riding, I had a tendency to bump the mode and exposure comp dials when getting it out. So the G7X will be my first choice for this use. Not a problem for most people, though.
I have it and have had it since its release. A great and very capable little unit. The controls are a bit finicky if you are trying to do things in the dark. I do want to get the camera that everyone seems to want these days to replace it but am more than happy to wait given I have the rx100.
I love your photos, and the editing of this video is really soothing, the music and general pacing made this great to watch - thanks for sharing your thoughts on the sony rx, I've got model three and I'm looking forward to taking it with me on my upcoming trip to Australia :)
I love my RX100VA and I am on the way to add a RX100VII for the sake of the 200mm tele and the audio input. Most people are surprised, that I take pictures wich such an outdated kind of pocket camera, as they did before they had their iPhones or Samsungs. They just dont know the capabilities of this little cameras. I keep my Nikons for special occasions like portrait shoots, macro, birds, sports,.. But for travel and always in my pocket, I love to use the RX100
People always chuckle at me too when I pull out my little point and shoot cameras. Someone the other day thought my Ricoh GR III was a camera from the early 2000s haha. You'll love the rx100vii. It's amazing they fit a 200mm zoom into such a small body.
Have fun! I've never used the V but it seems like a sweet spot between value and features. I believe that is the model with the built in ND filter if I'm not mistaken. That is a nice feature.
Own the MK7. Fantastic camera, but very prone to getting dust inside the lens system. I've got a couple of larger dust specks in there that I have no idea how to get out.
I have the Rx100 and RX100 Vii as well. The key for me on the VII is the audio input. The video of the rx100 is amazing and in low light better than VII. Only issue is mobile phones do as good for travel. My RX100 VII is concert camera. I expect in next couple years flagship phones will be as good or better. And fully agree III better than orig
Great vid - Such a fan of anyone who isn’t swayed solely by new camera. I came here considering whether to buy the M5 so this video was a big thumbs up. I started with the M1 when it was first launched and upgraded until about the M4 and then sold it but I’ve missed it since. Thanks
Nice pics. I’ve had a Mk1 since they came out . I agree with your comments. It’s a great grab and go camera, capable of good results. But have never liked the Sony menu so never upgraded it and stayed with the Mk1.
Me too. M3 and M7. However, i just sold my M3 to someone who needs it more than me. I would say the M3 Packs quite a punch even now. M7 has some compromises for greater zoom range.
I bought the RX100-3 recently, a wonderful compact camera, no match to Full Frame, but better than any point-and-shot. My complain is 70 mm long end, it is not enough, other complain is a flat release bottom, which is difficult to grab when it's needed. This problem I solved by gluing a little bump on the top of it. Camera cost me $32.- on flea market.
I bought a Mk1 in 2017 and still use it more than my APSC and my full frame. Carry it with me everywhere I go and force myself to only use it in manual mode.
Ha, what a coincidence! I happen to have the RX100 Mk I as well, and I used it for a couple of years until switching to the Ricoh GR in 2015 (at that time, the GR I). The beautiful images you showcased in this video inspire me to perhaps exhume the camera. 😊A little tip: I have a filter set for the RX100, where you stick a tiny base plate on the front of the lens barrel (an almost invisible magnetic ring that won't get in the way of the lens closure blades when powering the camera on and off), and just attach any matching filter you like. E.g. an ND filter so you could record pretty decent 1080p video during bright daylight conditions. But man, your camera looks pretty battered... 🤨😀
When I had the mark vii a few years ago, I had the magnetic ring thing (I can’t remember what it was called). I was hesitant to buy it originally because I thought it was a little sketchy, but after installing it, it worked great. I used to use a variable nd filter with mine. I haven’t installed one on the mark i because they are not easy to find in Albania lol.
A really useful video. I especially liked that you showed example images instead of doing the usual tech youtuber thing. Great job! I'm looking for an upgrade from my canon S110 and you've convinced me that the RX100 MK1 might actually be worth a try.
Thanks, Florian Schumacher! If you can find an rx100 at a good price, you should definitely give it a try. I’ve seen the mark i and mark ii selling for similar prices.
Ricoh GR III, Sony RX100 Mk5 or Sony RX100 Mk7... Which is the best pocketable camera from your point of view? I had the RX100 Mk5 and in my opinion, the biggest reason to move to Mk6 or Mk7 was the touch screen more than the zoom. The lens in the Mk5 is really good in terms of maximum aperture... My issue with RX100 was its ergonomics (which could have been improved with a touch screen). Sony missed the shot with not having a Mk5 with touch screen... Mk6 and Mk7 have lost the ND filter (really important if you want to do video) and have got a lens with bigger reach, but lower max aperture. I have the GR IIIx and in terms of ergonomics, it wins hands down any RX100... Of course, you are limited to a fix focal length (but you have an APSC sensor).
I'm about to buy a mk2 (today), my first ever camera. I'm doing this trip to europe in a couple of weeks. Should I buy the camera or maybe spend some more money or just use my iPhone 13 Pro? I love the pictures that you show here. Thank you.
Nice photos. Now all I have to do is get my RX100 out of the drawer it’s been in for more than 10 years and work out how to take them I meant to do,that when I bought it but mobile phone cameras stopped me from making the effort…😢
I've had the mark 3 for over a year now and it beats all my other cameras hands-down in most circumstances. Maybe the biggest plusses are the size of the camera and the picture quality for MOST purposes.
Couldn't agree more. I have the same camera, very beat up, but I paid £57 for it. The camera is always in my jacket pocket so available to take a picture. I have better larger cameras, but if the camera isn't with you their picture quality doesn't matter. I know I also have a phone on me, but somehow that is not the same.
You can actually fix that rear screen deterioration problem. It turns out the original camera shipped from the factory has a screen protector, a soft screen protector. It can be easily pealed off to reveal a pristine screen. I learned this from a RUclips video. Mine was really bunged up when I bought it in a thrift store. I pealed it off and it was perfect.
Recently I have interest in photography and bought this camera, how do you set your camera? If possible can you share your camera manual settings. I saw your pictures and it was great in my eyes.
First, love your b&w shots. Haven’t used the b&w profile but will probably try it I have the Mk v and personally I think it’s the best of the series as its lens is faster than the vi or vii. . Question: my raw files have less detail than the jpegs. Has anyone had that issue? Anyway thanks for spotlighting an under appreciated camera that I think makes a great street camera.
Hi, thanks for your video, it's helping a lot to make my decision. I was wondering if you know if it's possible to use some kind of remote controller or shooter?
One question for owners. If I’m taking pictures at 50mm equivalent for example and then turn of, when I turn it on it would be at 50mm again or at the widest?
Hi! I would like to know if it's worth to pay around 180 € for that second hand camera. If not, what other compact camera would be alright for that price!
Plus some of the RX100 M1 were made in Japan. Check the bottom plate. ツ Still use mine. Along with a newer Sony HX90. 24-720 zoom. Makes a good travel pair.
I have the VA and a love hate relation ship with it. The quality of the shots are really good but I just do not like to use it. The EVF is not good and everything is too crammed. BUT when I look at the pictures I question myself why I got the Q2.
Good for retiring photographers who can no longer endure lugging heavy DSLR bodies and several lenses in their backpacks. But want to continue taking photos.
Did you put the colour photo of the 2 boats in the bnw section to see if people were really paying attention to the video? 😁. I've been thinking about getting a RX100 mkii, I want the tilting screen and wifi, due to poor health. I suffer with pain pretty much all over these days and carrying a bag on my back with cameras, lenses, filters and whatever else I may need are a thing of the past so I was looking for something suitable so I could continue with my love of photography and I am 90% convinced the rx100 ii is that camera. I did buy a sony hx9v off ebay for £21 a few weeks back to see how well I would get on with a compact and really like it so I know I will like the rx100 even though it has less zoom range than the hx9v.
haha no, I didn't put the color image in there intentionally... clearly you were paying more attention than I was when editing haha. The tilting screen on the older rx100 is definitely a worthwhile feature. The tilt screen is the feature I miss most when shooting my mki and my Ricoh GR. I haven't tried the hx9v or the Sony's with smaller sensors, but I bet they can still make great images in decent light.
I've had two of these I think a three and a five I lost track. 90% of my photography is indoors dark with flash. Two flashes have both died on that camera after about a year. I love the size of it. It's a pretty decent camera. And it takes pictures in raw. Love the quality when editing. I need something the same size but I'm afraid to buy a third one and have the same failure. Need recommendations.
@photographer8486 They have different benefits at some point maybe 5 or 6. They changed the lens More zoom, less wide. and sacrificed some dark performance. That's not beneficial to me. Also with the newer versions speed. An overall performance improves 4K. Frame rates eventually might become 8k? I don't know. And the rapid shooting gets quicker et cetera et cetera
I too use Olympus cameras. Ok, now OMDS. Mine are all older brand so I’m safe. Any how, I too have a compact Sony, DSC W830, basic point and shoot 20.1 Megapixel. Zoom lens (Zeiss) 28-200 equivalent. Bought it for $20 at Goodwill three years ago? Lens flare! Lens cover sticks. Battery life? Ha, no! Nice photos though. My TG 6 is more flexible but not any easier to use. So, there you are. Oh! Pen f and OMD E 1 Mk 2…my Oly’s.
The pictures are very grainy. Also colors look like they have low bit depth in plenty of instances. There were weird color casts in many photos. Some photos were okay, but overall it's just not exactly what one would expect from 1 inch sensor compact. In terms of colors and noise modern 1/2.3" are much better, maybe even older 1/2.3" cameras are better. I hope that it's just weird auto mode.
It's a great camera but has one deal-breaker for me. Like so many Sony cameras the colors just don't look right. I have numerous Sony and Canon cameras I spend practically no time on the Canon cameras to adjust the colors on Sony I have to do it on nearly every shot and spend much more time trying to fix the color.
I've had the mkii for years and will never sell it, even have the evf for it, I'm a mountain runner and wild camper so when travelling ultralight it's the first thing in my pack.
@@LukeTaylorPhotography It's brutally expensive but I lucked out and got one cheap on ebay, not sure the person selling it knew what they're worth, paid a quarter of original price and it's in mint condition.
The photos you show look very sharp and accurate. Must say, though, the colour rendition just seems to come across rather flat, and samey. As if the processing has sucked some life out of them. Oddly like a modern day Iphone. Oh, and by the way.., Re:.. ".... 20Mp..... surprisingly quite capable... ". Why is it such a big surprise ? Great photographs have been taken for ever, nothing to do with how many Megapixels were involved.
This goes to show that a 12 year old camera still takes better looking photos than the last generation flagship smartphones in 2024. Great video and nice pictures!
That's what surprised me.

Me too. M3 and M7. However, i just sold my M3 to someone who needs it more than me. I would say the M3 Packs quite a punch even now. M7 has some compromises for greater zoom range.
Excuse my ignorance but will this take better pics than the latest camera phones such as the Samsung s23 ultra?
Those black and white photos are gorgeous
I bought the RX100-3 recently, a wonderful compact camera, no match to Full Frame, but better than any point-and-shot. My complain is 70 mm long end, it is not enough, other complain is a flat release bottom, which is difficult to grab when it's needed. This problem I solved by gluing a little bump on the top of it. Camera cost me $32.- on flea market.
that scratched screen is a protective layer that you can peel and replace, in case you dont know.
I bought a Mk1 in 2017 and still use it more than my APSC and my full frame. Carry it with me everywhere I go and force myself to only use it in manual mode.
I have the mkiii as my "always with me" camera, I usually shoot with a Canon R3 but love the results my little RX gives me.
camera never gets old. as long it can take good pictures and tell a story.
Sorry, you who have the Ricoh GR do you find that there is much better image quality between one camera and the other? Thank you
i use a rx100 mark v. beautiful camera, beautiful images.
I'm envious of your built in ND filter haha.
@@LukeTaylorPhotography haha, its really great feture
Almsot picked this up, but didn't. Guess I'll continue my chances, I dig the black and white photos, they're pretty damn good!
There are some great deals to be had on eBay if you're patient and keep your eyes open.
I have a Rx100 mk3 and are eyeing a RX1... Now... Now... Can you tell me something to stop me from buying it!?
I'm about to buy a mk2 (today), my first ever camera. I'm doing this trip to europe in a couple of weeks. Should I buy the camera or maybe spend some more money or just use my iPhone 13 Pro? I love the pictures that you show here. Thank you.
Love the photos - did you edit these?
Nice photos. Now all I have to do is get my RX100 out of the drawer it’s been in for more than 10 years and work out how to take them I meant to do,that when I bought it but mobile phone cameras stopped me from making the effort…😢
The VII is super pricey. Would you consider the V or VI instead?
Or is there another camera when 4K and similar value?
Thanks for the info. Great video. Where can I find this camera used? My budget is about $200.00 to $225.00
I've had the mark 3 for over a year now and it beats all my other cameras hands-down in most circumstances. Maybe the biggest plusses are the size of the camera and the picture quality for MOST purposes.
Can I use this camera as a webcam with a capture card?
Nice video. Liked your black & whites. Thanks.
Thanks, Robert
Couldn't agree more. I have the same camera, very beat up, but I paid £57 for it. The camera is always in my jacket pocket so available to take a picture. I have better larger cameras, but if the camera isn't with you their picture quality doesn't matter. I know I also have a phone on me, but somehow that is not the same.
absolutelly, agreed 200%!
Just grabbed the mk3 for less than $150 on ebay! Cheaper than buying a pancake lens for my a7iii and I’ll probably use it more too
That’s a nice deal. Enjoy it!
I have mine still, love it!
Yes! And there are aftermarket screen protectors, like those for phones, if people want the extra security after peeling off the bad one.
I am planning to get a used RX100. Is MK1 to MK3 better than a MK5 or MK6?
Mark 5 will be better for low light?
Hi, thanks for your video, it's helping a lot to make my decision. I was wondering if you know if it's possible to use some kind of remote controller or shooter?
Still have mine. Screen is cracked but works like a champ.
really love the bnw photos!
hi! will you recommended it for a concert? for photo and videos?👀
Hi friend! thanks for this adorable video, i likes your reviews and the site very much .
Hey love the video. were these images all shot on Jpegs?
I bought the RX100 mk 1 in 2018--quite cheap then. It's no way worse than the ZV-1, even perhaps better, with the pics
One question for owners. If I’m taking pictures at 50mm equivalent for example and then turn of, when I turn it on it would be at 50mm again or at the widest?
Good job, good camera, great pics!
Nice shots !! I recently got a SONY RX100M2 and I'm starting to use it. I like the quality of the images. Are you using Auto mode? P? or M? Thanks.
I am planning to get a used RX100. Is MK1 to MK3 better than a MK5 or MK6?
Hi! I would like to know if it's worth to pay around 180 € for that second hand camera.
If not, what other compact camera would be alright for that price!
I’d hate to sound ignorant but I couldn’t help but laugh. As a Canadian I thought you were saying Toronto 😂. Great review! Awesome Photos!
Nicely done....I like alot of contrast in my B&W too...and some noise.
Thanks!
How were these pictures taken? Handheld or on a stable surface/using a tripod? Etc
Definitely handheld... I never use a tripod lol.
Plus some of the RX100 M1 were made in Japan. Check the bottom plate. ツ
Still use mine.
Picked up mk3 last month for £150 with malfunctioning focus ring. Brilliant camera
Good for retiring photographers who can no longer endure lugging heavy DSLR bodies and several lenses in their backpacks. But want to continue taking photos.
I used rx100 mk1 make lots of memories ,It’s a nice camera for a beginner
I am planning to get a used RX100. Is MK1 to MK3 better than a MK5 or MK6?
@@photographer8486 I think the price and performance of MK1 to MK3 make them very suitable for beginners.
I’ve got the mk6 and it’s my main landscape camera these days
One other thing I like about the RX100 I over the VII is that the battery stays charged when it's turned off.
I am planning to get a used RX100. Is MK1 to MK3 better than a MK5 or MK6?
@photographer8486 They have different benefits at some point maybe 5 or 6. They changed the lens More zoom, less wide. and sacrificed some dark performance. That's not beneficial to me. Also with the newer versions speed. An overall performance improves 4K. Frame rates eventually might become 8k? I don't know. And the rapid shooting gets quicker et cetera et cetera
what aspect ratio do you guys use for photo, 16:9 or 4:3 ?
I too use Olympus cameras. Ok, now OMDS. Mine are all older brand so I’m safe. Any how, I too have a compact Sony, DSC W830, basic point and shoot
20.1 Megapixel.
May I know which Olympus camera in particular are you referring to?
My e-m1 Mark ii
wait wait wait.... is that bus stuck over the stream?!?
Lol yes, you saw correctly 😂
I would get Sony ZV-1 instead of RX100 Mk1. 1" stack sensor and phase AF with eye tracking is a game changer for compact camera.
The Sony RX100v7 and the Ricoh GR1 are my everyday carry cameras.
which one do you prefer?
@@gabbylopez8090 Hi, I like the Sony for the lens reach, but I love the GR1 for the picture quality.
What firmware, 1.1 or 2.0?
I've had the mkii for years and will never sell it, even have the evf for it, I'm a mountain runner and wild camper so when travelling ultralight it's the first thing in my pack.
I didn't even know they made an EVF for the mkii. That is awesome.
Hey man if I found one for 100 dollars do you recommend it?
Want a RX100, s on my list of toys :), meanwhile got a Nikon 1 j5 theoretically same sensor of RX100 MK3 and I'm really happy
I wish Sony make a M43 size cmos of RX100 and RX10, like 18-50mm F2-4 and 24-300mm F2.8-5.6
