I think that’s where the miiverse post was! There was a post that asked “can you guys guess where this picture was taken” and I couldn’t figure it out past what stage it was. This is mind blowing
3:42 "there's no documentation for these 1-UPs anywhere". Actually Mankalor documented them in a video. Though to be fair, the video is called "Super Mario 3D World - Small details you may not have noticed", so it's not obvious that it would include these 1-UPs (plus it's not like you could have watched every video on this game that exists). Still, good video.
Yeah I've gotten these before but not from the video you're talking about. It was pure curiosity. Though I did try and look up videos on if there's something up there and I came back empty handed but I still did it because I thought it would be cool.
Thank you! I got up there many years ago but I completely forgot how. A couple years ago I tried again; thinking that I remembered a warp pipe was up there, guess it was 1-UPs; but I couldn’t find a way to get up there. I ended up almost completely doubting I ever did it and that it was even possible without having to use glitches. I totally believe that me and my brother would have gone into 2 player mode in order to get up there.
i just got up there with peach, you need to do a spin jump then grab into the wall on of the two side of it, then with a bit of luck you should be able to get there.
Same, I got up there by playing multiplayer and was surprised that it was possible... but I still wish I got something as cool as a secret power up or something, but that would never happen
It was by a RUclipsr named Mankalor, he’s probably most famous for his Mario Kart 8 videos, but one of his older videos (can’t remember which one, but I’m pretty sure he hasn’t deleted it) features this.
I remember finding them as well, and not being happy about it because we found the 1-Ups before the other Green Star which is why we got up there in the first place, plus we did the shell bounce thing for infinite lives so it wasn't all that valuable. We've always played with a full group of four and bouncing off of each others heads was just natural to us.
He needs to make a video on why there is only 2 gold pipes in 3D World, and why the developers put them there, and if there are more hidden ones that haven’t been found. There is a gold pipe in world 1-2 and one in world 2-1
For those wondering, this was likely the developers putting 1-ups where they think it's obtainable and hidden, only for the collision programmers to make it impossible due to steep ramp collision. It's also possible that the map was changed before it was finalized, but because the 1-ups are so out of the way they didn't notice them before release.
This video actually jogged up a forgotten memory of mine. When i was younger I believe my cousin and I actually found that, but didn't think anything important out of it. Thanks for the old memories man lol
I know another way to get the 1-ups, just quickly rotate the left stick in a circle (multiple times) so your character spins, then jump. It'll make you jump really high before you hit the wall to climb with the cat suit.
0:12 Once again, I thought I knew everything about Super Mario 64. I would have never thought of the idea that punching a butterfly could have any reaction or effect. Of all the Super Mario 64 trivia I've watched/read, not a single one had ever covered the secrets of butterflies. I know this isn't related to the main topic of the video at all but this 5 second clip shocked me the most.
A couple years ago me and my brother were trying to get up that wall so we bounced on each others heads not expecting to find anything but when we saw three one-ups we were excited and said we found an “Easter Egg” We were like 7 so we didn’t have phones to record with.
I tried to get up there by grabbing 4 cat suits, and 4 players but my brother was like NO I don't want to see what is up there. I am so relived to see my childhood dream of seeing what is up there come true.
“If the coin collections [in Odyssey] had an object you for sure needed, the difficulty would have been adjusted.” I think you underestimate the difficulty of volleyball
I don't know if you know this or not but in 3-Castle you can reach the bullet bill train at the beginning using peach with a tnooki leaf you can bounce on cat-bullet bills to reach the train. I don't know how intentional this is as there is a 1-up mushroom but its fairly close to where the warp-pipe takes you. Either way its still pretty cool and I don't know if anyone has mentioned it
I didn’t realize those were supposed to be very hard to find. I found those pretty easy years ago. I think I just got it with using the cat suit and my sibling’s help. I always thought that was a well known secret. I had no idea those were pretty secretive
I find it funny that Mario Galaxy's triple 1-up and 3D World's triple 1-ups are both attainable by abusing one of their main gameplay mechanics: Galaxy's spin jump and 3D World's multiplayer
I. HAVE. BEEN. FUCKING. WAITING. FOR. This video. For years!!!! I discovered these three mushrooms almost seven years ago while playing, and never saw a RUclips video covering the depth or insanity of it (except for 1-2 others, which also deserved recognition but never got it). Thank you for finally shedding light on this :) I personally feel like they should have hidden more in this secret spot. Like one of the pipes, a special secret or Easter egg, here in this mysterious spot.
I replayed this game a couple months ago, and you can actually get these 1UPs with just one player. By using a trick to get your climb to last longer, by holding the run button and letting go near the end of your climb, you can get a bit higher. With this trick used on both of your climbs, you can actually reach the top with one player.

My brothers and I got these 3 years ago. We used 2 players and used spin jumps to boost each other and you could BARELY climb up there with the cat and Luigi.
Holy crap, on my playthrough this month I specifically tried to climb that wall twice and fell in the pit to the side. I wasn't expecting much but wanted to see what was up there, and it ended up there was something!
I tried this 1player on my switch as peach (i think rosalina and Luigi work as well) and if you go up to the wall like normal and get the star it will last by the time you get to the 2nd layer so you can climb if pretty easily while in 1player
*I OBJECT, YOUR SWANKY HONOR!!!* I actually have a super-easy method for claiming these 1-Ups. First, you scale the first wall as normal. Then, when you're right in front of the second wall, twirl your L-Stick really fast until your character starts spinning, then jump. When your character is at the peak of their jump, begin climbing the wall. Hold the Y button while doing so, as this will actually increase your climbing speed. When your character starts squirming, jump off and perform a cat-dive back into the wall. This will give you just enough climbing distance to reach the top. Again, hold the Y button while climbing. It may be hard at first, but with some practice, it will become pretty easy. You won't even need an additional player for assistance. NOTE: It's *CRUCIAL* that you use Luigi. This is because his additional jump height makes him the only character capable of this method even remotely working.
Here are my theories as to how this happened: 1) The cat suit used to allow you to climb for longer, but the devs didn’t realise these 1-UPs would then be impossible to reach 2) The dev who made the geometry didn’t realise he made it impossible to find 3) Initially the wall was shorter but then changed with the devs forgetting the 1-UPs were even there
When I was little I went up there just for fun and found those 1-Up, I found it so amazing at the time as I had never seen anyone else talk about them!!
I guess these 1-ups were more elusive for players than I thought. Personally when I played this level, I used two player mode as well, but I had P2 bounce on my head as I scaled the wall, and then climbed with them. Also something to note about the way you regrant the wall, and maybe this isn’t more effective but it is easier, is to use the crouch button once you run out of stamina. This will take you off the wall without wall-kicking off of it. Figured this out while trying to beat the game without jumping
Easiest way to get them is by using a Tanooki Leaf, or using Rosalina's wall jump glitch. I found them when I was looking for Easter eggs a few months back
I actually knew about this for the longest time, but never mentioned it because I thought no one would be interested to know about it, so I'm happy that this secret has now been revealed for many to know.
I know my channel name may say differently now but I have a degree in Publishing and it's entirely likely something called 'the gap' is what caused that discrepancy in the collector's edition. Quick explanation: publishers have a Profit & Loss sheet for each book they publish, in fact the editors in charge of getting the manuscripts have to pitch them at company meetings (backed with what is estimated to be a good measure of success) in order for a company to even agree to produce the book, negotiate an advance with an author etc. Book sales typically revolve around tie-ins (games, tv shows etc) but most commonly: holidays. Due to the tax year starting and ending in April, a publishing company has to not only _acquire_ a set number of titles between April (or the company makes a loss), but also get them into the marketplaces and _sell_ them, leading to something termed in the industry as 'stopping the gap' - acquiring rights and pushing sales left, right and centre to ensure the company stays in good condition for another year (refunds also typically effect this but there's no need to get into that here). With this guide being a physical book (and especially with that one-page insert) the publishers would have had to pay extra to set up the printing machines, all this has a knock-on effect, *this book needs to be ready to print* (maybe it's not even entirely finished, but it's a final draft) *by such and such date* - *no exceptions* My guess is because the omission was so minor (if the people even working directly with the book would have known at all, proofreaders and editors are often in-house etc) and the cost of production was too high to reprint (and to omit the mistake) it was pushed out probably for Christmas, with no plans for updating the information. It will be interesting to see if either the publishers or Nintendo themselves become aware of the omissions through videos like yours though, and use Bowser's Fury as an excuse to subtly make corrections as well as to sell on that new information. Great video by the way! 😅 Sorry, this message may have gotten a little a way with me.
This was ridiculously easy to do. All you need is a tanooki suit and two somewhat perpendicular walls and you can get up there in several places. The level has a lot of pillars imbedded in the wall, and since you can wall jump off the pillars? You can wall jump up to the 1-up really easy.
Many years ago, probably four, i was one hundred percenting the game and came across that wall. Being an _average wall climber_ of mario games, i picked up another Wii-mote and got the 1-ups. I love to check on every wall in mario games, because some hide secrets and others are just an achievement. I was so surprised there was something up there, and im happy that more people will know about those mad 1-ups!
I tried climbing this wall because I thought the stamp would be there, and I found the 1-ups instead. I thought that there was a warp box to take you there, but I wanted to see if I could get up without it. I used a second player to throw me up and I climbed. I thought more people would know about these 1-ups.
In the first Train level in the game (idk which world), on the second train (the red bullet bill, next to the bowser one), there are boxes on the end of it, next to 3 bullet bill cannons, and in one of the boxes there's a 1 up, but from as far as I know, the only way to get onto that train (through a pipe), spawns you next to the Banzai Bill canon, which is too far away to make it to the boxes, because it's an autoscrolling level. Could you please document how you're supposed to get there? Because I have no idea.
My brothers and I spend hours trying to get up there and lost hundreds of lives trying to get those fuckers. We succeeded after like 3 hours and actually managed to get up there 3 years ago
I don't know why I decided to watch this, because every Super Mario 3D World save I touch has the maximum lives possible by at least the time at which 1-2 is completed

Fun Fact-
The Switch version of 3D world doesn’t require multiplayer to get to the three 1-ups, because you can climb faster
Here are my theories as to how this happened:
1) The cat suit used to allow you to climb for longer, but the devs didn’t realise these 1-UPs would then be impossible to reach
2) The dev who made the geometry didn’t realise he made it impossible to find
3) Initially the wall was shorter but then changed with the devs forgetting the 1-UPs were even there
I think I even remember collecting those three 1UPs, because I remember asking my sister to help me as the second player :D
When I was little I went up there just for fun and found those 1-Up, I found it so amazing at the time as I had never seen anyone else talk about them!!
Update for Bowser’ Fury, it’s REALLY easy now. Just climb up, wall jump and midair dive on top
Skyforge is pretty neat! I really liked it, except it needs a subscription for players to really get anywhere.
Easiest way to get them is by using a Tanooki Leaf, or using Rosalina's wall jump glitch. I found them when I was looking for Easter eggs a few months back
People didn't know this? Then again I played way too much of this game as a kid-
For the biggest challenges, theres nothing you could give most players that is more valuable than acknowledgement
"Only the BEST players will ever get these!"
"Just have a friend join and it's literally that easy, plus it's the only way to do it."
I actually knew about this for the longest time, but never mentioned it because I thought no one would be interested to know about it, so I'm happy that this secret has now been revealed for many to know.
Same
I know my channel name may say differently now but I have a degree in Publishing and it's entirely likely something called 'the gap' is what caused that discrepancy in the collector's edition.
Thanks to the increase speed in the new port you are now able to get these 1 ups by your self. I got them with just Mario.
We succeeded after like 3 hours and actually managed to get up there 3 years ago
u can just cat momentum to it from the second green star
Fun fact: with some tight movement you can climb the tower and reach the 1-ups without speedrun strats or two player
I don't know why I decided to watch this, because every Super Mario 3D World save I touch has the maximum lives possible by at least the time at which 1-2 is completed
The german let's player Domtendo always picket up these one ups when he was playing 3D world,
so the existence of these isn't a big surprise for me xD
Considering that the cat suit has gotten a climb boost for the port, the 1 Ups might become normally obtainable.
