Half a year ago we tackled completing Super Mario 64 if every object was a coin. However, there is one challenge I've always wanted to do: Is it possible to beat Super Mario 64 while carrying a box the entire time? For those who've watched my videos, you know I've always grabbed a cork box and assumed I was a pizza delivery man in this game. But what if our box quest spanned the entire game? How many stars could we collect? And most importantly: Is the game beatable? Join me for a deep dive on this bizarre Mario challenge as we analyze the game top to bottom!

Imagine a pizza delivery guy who is only physically able to throw the box at you.
In real life that wouldn’t be too different from the game, except the dude can throw each individual pizza like a frisbee instead of all of them at once

7:50 Actually, with the wing cap, it is possible.
You can place down the box and do a triple jump dive to the island.
If you dive at the right moment, you grab the box while triple jump diving, and with the wing cap, you can actually make it. You can use the same tech for WF and SSL as well.
Requires alot of practice and save states though.

(I am sort of a sloppy speedrunner but i have fun with a special challenge where I have to get the reds with the box.I made it through all of the stages, in other words, BOB, WF, and VERY SURPRISINGLY SSL)

You could maybe wiggle your way around throwing and using fludd but Yoshi shines would be impossible. I'm fairly sure the Pianta Village Yoshi shine is required to unlock the Shadow Mario shine so you'd be locked out.

Somehow I thought, the levels name was "Bowser in the fire seat", like a throne out of fire. I'm kind of disappointed now 😕
When I was a kid, we didn't realize Wet Dry World's water level depended on the height at which you entered the painting. We figured out that jumping onto the grey seam just right allowed Mario to glitching slide all the way to the cage though, so maybe that could work.
I never fully understood how tick tock clocks timer works. I just knew 12 meant timefreeze
@@Kaitri If the minute hand is +/- 15° from the 12, then it freezes the clock. If it's +/- 30° from the 6 then the movement is chaotic. If neither and the hand is closer to the 9, the clock runs fast. If closer to the 3, the clock runs slow.
@@Kaitri This brings back memories... I never understood the wet dry world initial water level either, I just hoped that it would be high by chance. I also figured out the 12 o' clock stop, and I think we figured out the 6 o' clock thing at some point too.

OBJECTION! Stand Tall Atop the Pillars can be achieved any time without selecting its star!
You could probably get Inside the Ancient Pyramid as well by entering through the top and jumping off of the elevator onto a high enough point that you can skip the poles. The only potential problem would be how far out of the elevator you could get with the box weighing you down.

I was really confused by the claim that the top of the pyramid couldn't be removed. I started thinking that one of the pillars were unreachable. The explanation given came as a surprise.
In fact, the only things that are scenario- or star-dependent in SM64 are cannons in some levels (esp. BoB), Koopa the Quick, the tower with the 2nd Star and owl in Whomp’s Fortress, the ship and Unagi in JRB, the Big Penguin and Snowman’s Body in CCM, Bowser’s Sub and the moving poles in DDD, and the relative locations of the entrances to DDD and BitFS. For everything else in the game, it doesn’t matter what scenario you load or which Stars in a level you’ve collected.

20:50 you don’t need to select stand tall on the four pillars on the star select to complete that star. It can be completed right from the start. So it might be possible to get the stars: inside the ancient pyramid, pyramid puzzle, and stand tall on the four pillars

I believe in wet dry world you can get the two town stars since the tunnel to the town while holding a box causes the "hold any item" glitch (or whatever it's called). Thus, you can leave the box behind and pick up your complementary one in the town. Unless I am wrong of course.
For this run I was trying to eliminate the holding exploits. Any level with a non-fade-to-black transition becomes a lot easier once you can clone / load items. Even without the transition, a skilled player can manipulate the game to pretty much call any star to them. I wanted to make the run as vanilla as possible to be more in-line with what could have been accomplished as a kid. Although, I suppose there are some outliers.
This has to be a speedrunning category, I'd love to see cheese trying to do this

Challenge Idea: Super Mario 64 But All Objects Are Boxes.
Goal: Play through the entire game while exploring the now-boxified Mushroom Kingdom.
Rules: Simple(flips), All objects are cork boxes.
Glitches and speedrunning tricks are permitted.
I never expected this to get a few likes, This was just a silly little idea I had. By combining the All-Coin run and the Box run, it would've made for a pretty fun challenge. I hope this becomes a real challenge soon!

The holder of the 4 rotating platform thing is pretty glitchy (its hitbox is asymmetrical and differs much from it's skin) maybe that helps. Also you can use pause-buffering and alternating frame walks to rotate the seesaw 90° and get ontop of it.

"Bandis Big House in the Sky" I see what you did there.
My favorite mini-game I played in Super Mario 64 was playing a game of tag with the "1-Up Mushrooms" that chase down Mario. Effectively, on any stage that had one of those homing-missile mushrooms, I would activate it and then try to play through the stage and collect stars without allowing it to touch me; which is a lot more difficult than it sounds because the only effective way to gain distance from the "1-Up Mushroom" is to Long-Jump, because it moves at the same speed as Mario's regular running pace; meaning, it will gradually close the distance to catch you whenever you make any type of left or right turn whatsoever. So apart from running in a straight line on flat (or descending) ground, any arch movement you make will give the homing-missile mushroom some leeway to catch up; therefore, to increase the distance between yourself and the "1-Up Mushroom", you have to strategically plot out fast routes that optimize "Long-Jumps" and downward slopes as often as possible.
One of the more difficult things to do is to gain just barely enough distance to use a warp-spot within a level. For instance, using the warp-flowerpads in "Bob-Bomb Battlefield", if you gain just enough distance from the "1-Up Mushroom" to successfully warp away before it touches you, that will give you tremendous distance between it and yourself, thereby giving you enough time accomplish slower stars (such as getting all the way to the top of the mountain to battle the Bob-Bomb King. Admittedly, I always struggled with defeating the boss before the homing-missile mushroom reaches me; I can attest that it is possible, but extremely difficult. Nevertheless, playing tag with the "1-Up Mushrooms" were my favorite self-imposed mini-game pass-time in Super Mario 64. Have you considered trying a challenge to see if it is possible to beat Super Mario 64 without being touched by the homing-missile on every stage? Some stages don't have the "1-Up Mushrooms" that chase Mario, so you would likely have to modify the game to spawn that specific type of homing-missile mushroom on every stage, but I'd be sincerely curious to know how many stars are obtainable when Mario is forced to evade the "1-Up Mushroom" like a plague!
Obviously, I would assume that Bowser-battles would need to be immune since there is virtually nowhere to run from the homing-missile mushroom (unless you slow it down); and even if you could repeatedly "Long-Jump" around the edges of Bowser's arenas to keep away from the "1-Up Mushroom", you would never have enough time to grab and throw Bowser. But apart from Bowser-fights, have you considered seeing how many stars are obtainable throughout the game without getting hit by the homing-missile mushroom? I would sincerely be curious to know the answer...

Pyramid puzzle and the 4 pillars are actually doable in shifting sand land, making for 5-2. You don't need to beat the first stars to activate the pillars.

I just found you and your videos and I love them already. I really enjoy your explaination throughout the whole videos, but, (if it's not too much work), I think it would be fun to have an additional video, like a "extra features", where you post the whole run of the box carrying. Obviously segmented of course, where only the segment of succession for every star is present. Perhaps with a small text below with a "fails" or a "time to complete" is present. At least I would watch it. Anyway, keep up the great videos! 😄

I did similar things as a kid too. You sorta had to figure things like that out when there was no such thing as internet and everything was pretty much single-player games. I can't tell you how many times I played Perfect Dark and tried to lay a trail of mines from one end of a stage to the other, or played Ocarina of Time trying goofy stuff like trying to make Bombchu's go to whacky places.
