In this case it’s not pointless, it’s an investment. Some of the watches he showed went up almost 10X since he purchased them. His comment was actually made about Patek watches, which dramatically went up since he made the purchase.

It has nothing to do about being a billionaire. As long as you’re investing $X in some vehicle (e.g.: Stocks) that can afford the watch, then purchasing the watch might actually be a better investment. The watch is really just an exchange of currency. It’s still considered a profitable investment. Because he’s a billionaire, he gets to keep the watches for a very long time.. that’s the only difference. Nothing prevents you from selling the watch at 10X profit. Then guess what? You have 10X more money to do something similar with another set of watches… that’s really just investing and profiting from your money.
