This version never fails to take my breath away. I always felt that, given the intensity and raw power of Trey's solo on this Moma, it's like through his playing you are truly hearing a man screaming in pain over the decision he has just made. That's just my interpretation.
Everyone is playing so good here. This was my first Phish show I ever fell in love with. Bought the DVD with my weed money when I was like 14 and never looked back. Really love this whole show.. especially the Curtain With. Made me want to take up drumming, and I did.
Was at this show and just remember screaming my head off at the 9 minute mark. So freaking powerful and intense! Can't believe how fortunate I am to be here while this is going on. Fucking WIN!
So I heard a little tab on a dead station and was like ohhhh shiiiiiit and thought I might dig round a bit. A really good buddy said 97 would be a good place for me to start.....I found this round 9 months ago and I keep coming back over and over. I now have most of the 90s in my library, however the music never stops.
Yeah, with the trainwreck (treynwreck?) that was vegas shortly before this and trainwreck that was coventry shortly after this, its amazing to me how good this is.
He probably wasn't even getting very high at that point, he is a walking scarecrow, at some point the effect of drug diminishes. I think he gets in zone regardless of the drug consumed. I saw phish at Dicks and they can f-ing rip it with no buzz on whatsoever. I play myself, quit using everything several years ago, and playing effect is much more powerful with no inhibition imho. Don't need oxy to get there.
@Juantarde I've been battling that demon for the better part of 12 years..sometimes successfully sometimes not..but music is powerful medicine for sure
I agree with most this may be the BEST Moma ever! I actually have this in my top 10 all time live performances, Trey was extremely high but damn it’s epic!
As a musician, ex heroin addict, and phish fan, I will say that there’s a sweet spot with music and opiates and while it doesn’t last long and is ultimately destructive more often than not, it exists and is a wonderful place to be for however long it lasts.
This is my favorite Moma for sure. Just crystal clear, precise, and jams way into outer space. Don't care if it's 2.0 and Trey's guitar sounds thinner than ever. The Free and Possum are absolute fire as well in this show.
Trey def played off his TAB 2000/2001/2002 jazzy influenced band and brought that tone to 2.0. I myself love the Trey tone from later 1.0 but prefer Gordon's sound in 2.0. I remember hearing that he canned the ross compressors which was what boosted his tone to cut through the mix. I'm still very found of 2.0 even though it was very hit or miss. If it hit, it slapped, if it was a miss it was horrible.
jesus christ this is the best modern day performing act. and they are so in sync now more than ever, these guys fuckin tear it up. they have more creativity than any of you haters; they have a monstrous following despite having no radio hits, sell out Madison Square every new years, and yea Trey is a badass guitarist, probably one the best of his generation. if you don't like them, fine but you can't deny the talent that they each possess.
through continuous repetition of these little funky jamming bits attached together ,each time they play it you can wind up with a completely different version .They eventually just keep getting better and better at these bits .This is tight !
i think thats why this Moma is so incredible. Moma is a naturally pretty repetitive song even when it was still Black Eyed Katy. but with this version, the first time listener might expect your everyday average moma dance but this completely blows it out of the water exactly how you said, with that funky dirty 2.0 energy building!!! I❤️🐟
When Trey goes off in the later jam, even Fishman howls in astonishment! lol When you can get your 30 year friend and bandmate off, you are a sick fucking guitarist!

It’s so cool to see them dig the fuck into the music despite everything going on. In a lot of footage from this time period, the band looks dejected while Trey wastes away in front of them. Here the darkness comes through but the band is enjoying the moment.
This 2 night Brooklyn span runs from thrilling and fresh, to just damn depressing.
