Craig's Bond, Eva Green's beauty and charisma, the fact that nearly all action scenes are instant-classics, that the antagonist isn't an evil cartoonish villain (and played by Mads, come on, how could it go wrong anyway), the brilliant writing (that made her the best "Bond girl" ever), the witty dialogues, the fact that the romance WORKS (I mean, a romance in a Bond movie !)...

      He's better than Connery by a mile. The problem with the older bonds were that they were almost like a parody of Bond himself. Craig is exactly what you'd expect a real life 007 agent to be like. Smart, ruthless, effortlessly cool, sophisticated, and an absolute weapon of destruction.
      Brosnan in my opinion, was also a very good bond. He had a more light hearted and zany take on bond. His movies never felt overly serious and had crazy gadgets and flamboyant villains. To that extent, his movies portrayed the Bond brand better than Craig.
      But Craig takes the win for me because he makes the character his own and for what I'd expect to be most people made his interpretation of the character the preferred interpretation.

    A couple of things to point out about this movie if you’ve never seen a Bond movie before.
    This movie plays with several of the James Bond tropes. The opening of Bond movies almost always have a cold open, a shot of Bond down a gun barrel, the James Bond Theme, and then a music video showcasing the song for the movie.
    During the movie he’ll go to exotic locales, seduce exotic women, wear a tux, escape certain death, ask for a Martini - shaken not stirred, and tell someone his name, “Bond, James Bond”.
    In Casino Royale the movie is really about Bond becoming James Bond (007 licensed to kill secret agent.) They play with this, like when the bar tender asks if he wants his Martini shaken or stirred and he says, “do I look like I give a damn.” He’s not Bond yet. M calls him a blunt instrument and doesn’t fully trust him in the first half of the movie.
    They do a really interesting thing with the music. We almost never hear the Bond theme. It’s not in the opening and most of the time you think you are hearing it it’s actually Chris Cornell’s You Know My Name which incorporates a bit of the theme.
    The only time we actually hear it are when James is doing something particularly Bind like. We hear it in the background when he arrives at his first exotic location and again when he’s shocked back to life at the car.
    It’s not until the end of the movie when we finally hear the full song and the famous “Bond, James Bond” line. He knows about betrayals, he knows who to trust, he’s got the bad guy where he wants him and he’s now the James Bond of the previous 20 movies.

      @Gary Allen But there's no gin in Bond's drink. It's a VODKA martini (which you can debate elsewhere whether or not that's a real martini anyway). Apparently vodka doesn't react to shaking the way gin does.
      Also, an intelligence agent like Bond, who needs to keep his wits about him, would probably appreciate the increased dilution of the alcohol.

    This really is a top-tier Bond film, and easy to argue as the potential best. Also cool that Martin Campbell also directed Goldeneye, meaning he introduced two separate new Bond's in Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig.

  • @billmorris8358
    @billmorris8358 2 года назад +13

    The second Daniel Craig Bond film Quantum Of Solice is widely regarded as a weak movie, but the opening pre title sequence begins one hour after this movie ends. The opening sequence is well worth a watch. Craigs third and fourth outing as Bond is back to form, and well worth your time reviewing them.

    • @emperormouse5487
      @emperormouse5487 2 года назад +3

      When watched back to back, you realize that Quantum of Solace isn't really supposed to be a full sequel. It's main purpose is to tie up the story threads left by Casino Royale. The reason it's regarded as weak is because it relies heavily on the first movie for its narrative footing. Watching them back to back, I loved QoS as companion movie to Casino Royale.
      A more appropriate title for the movie would have been Casino Royale: The Epilogue.

    • @Nukeskywalker45

      I avoided that movie till last month, due to horrible feedback. I was surprised by how much I really enjoyed it! I love all Bond movies, and Quantum of Solace stands among them. Quantum of Solace had quite a few things going against it even before the movie came out. The studio not only didn’t have the rights to “Spectre” at the time (hence the organization’s name “Quantum”), but there was a writer’s strike involving their writers, so the filmmakers on set had to wing it for a while.

    It was fun to watch your reactions to this fantastic movie. Best Bond movie IMO. It works on so many levels. We can tell that Craig is actually doing a lot of the stunts himself (first day of filming was the embassy fight and Craig got a crown knocked out of his mouth). Some of my favorite scenes:
    The parkour chase.
    The machete fight in the stairwell (first time I've ever heard a bullet ricochet and NOT hit someone).
    The poisoning scene.
    The train scene with its stellar banter between Bond and Vesper.
    The rug beater torture scene.
    There a couple deleted scenes on RUclips.
    And over the whole time of the filming, Craig was getting ravaged in the press and social media by Bond fans. A lot if pressure to come through. And he killed it. Great writing, great acting.

    The main titles for Bond films are arguably one of the last places in modern cinema where, as a musician, you get an entire song to yourself on celluloid.
    Don't forget, this series dates back to the 1960's, where credit sequences were more front-loaded. Even in, for instance, Diamonds Are Forever (1971), the end titles are still fairly short, and are there to credit stuff that would have been spoiler-ish if they'd run over the opening titles.
    So, fast forward to the 80's and 90's: most feature film credits were moved to the end titles, so Bond's extensive opening numbers were getting anachronistic...but by then, MTV had established music videos as mainstream.
    And that's when you started seeing pop acts like Duran Duran, a-ha, Tina Turner, Sheryl Crow, Gladys Knight, and (more recently) Adele and Sam Smith, backing the main titles for Bond films.
    So, what began as convention, soon became tradition, aided by an unexpected turn of popular media.
