Based off the 1980 Carter-Reagan debate conspiracy. A Carter campaign staffer left a briefcase of Carter's debate prep notes on a train. A GOP operative got a hold of it, gave it to Reagan, and the Reagan campaign milked it for all it was worth. Carter did not change his debate strategy. Reagan had a quip and a retort and a laugh line to every thing Carter was expected to say. Carter was ahead before that debate. He never recovered after.
Reagan did not win in 1980 because he had a quip and retort for everything Carter had to say. Reagan won in 1980 because the Iran Hostage crisis, 1979 OPEC crisis, gasoline prices, stagflation, and the Carter misery index. Blaming Carter's re-election "loss" on a stolen briefcase is just nonsense and a leftist rationalization excuse to say something was stolen from them when in truth, the President was a bad President.
With the Iran situation going on i don't think Carter could have won, conspiracy or not. Reagan was more charismatic and had a ruthless team behind him to win.
no one, except the venue and its employees, the people taking the day off to go to the rally. oh, yeah...and the tv crews and scheduled airtime. youre right... no one.
Santos had the original idea for a musical based on the life of Alexander Hamilton. The first song was in the briefcase. Never went anywhere due to Santos becoming president.
Evidence of Matt Santos paying money to a woman named Anita, a former clerk in the Houston mayor's office. But it's not for an illegitimate child he had with her, but his brother had with her.
I believe it was Santos' check book. It has payments to a woman that Santos later told Vinick was support for a relative's wife. On the surface it looked like hush money for an affair, and they sort of left it a little ambiguous. But Vinick accepted the explanation and didn't raise a stink about it. Always liked that they left it a little undefined. Like maybe there was a little gray going on.
@@NonSenseMcGee ah yes, I remember now, thanks. Definitely raised the level of respect Santos had of Vinick that he didn't pursue it. Proper base for making him secretary of State
Vinnick was actually a better candidate than Santos. Had the original writing team been in place i fully expect that Vinnick would have been the next president, in a bid for TWW to show the best candidate is always the right one regardless of party. It was so predicatable and far too simple for TWW writing in a nuclear accident to give Santos the win.
They were going to have the nuclear accident to add drama to the race and keep people interested. Originally Vinik was going to win a close race. But when John Spencer died while filming the election episode they decided to change the outcome in a tribute to him.
@@eriktabers4259 If you have the DVD set they talk about this exact same thing, that originally they were thinking that Vinik would win until John Spencer died and then they rethought it. I liked how it worked out, Santos choosing Vinik to be Sec of State, and including Spencer's funeral so that we all could grieve. I still cry every time I watch that scene.
It's not so ridiculous, it just makes sense based on an alternate reality that is perfectly plausible. The big realignment was in the 1960s and still, Ronald Reagan won California in both of his campaigns.
@asal345 in the political climate, even in 2006 when it aired, it was ridiculous. This was a very close election, not a 1984 beat down like Reagan had. Always found the west wing somewhat realistic but how the election played out bothered me( not that Santos won but he won it)
They never did. Only 3 decent Republican presidents. Lincoln. Teddy Roosevelt. Eisenhower. . Nixon negotiated with North Vietnam and Johnson could not tell us or it told them we broke their code. Southern Strategy. Fake war on drugs to prevent black people from voting and owning guns. Reagan. Iran contra. Continued fake war on drugs and southern strategy. Bush. Ditto. Bush. Lied to start wars. Torture. The orange one.
The clip is stupid. You include all the superfluous stuff at the beginning, but then cut off the end which actually contains the "shocking revelation." 🙄
But you still clicked on it, watched it, and posted a comment, which increases engagement, and therefore ad revenue. The system worked, and left you feeling unfulfilled, which means you'll likely click through to another west wing video, increase engagement there too.

Reagan was utter slime, but he fooled an entire nation into thinking he was a great guy.

really youtube? why delete that?
"It could make you President." In that game, at that level, that's all a candidate needs to hear.
And then the AI doesnt add the actually important part.
"A republican can win the presidency without California." "And a Democrat CAN'T!" Exactly.
and a Republican cannot win without Texas, what is your point?
True for the past 48 years, but Jimmy Carter won without California. Except for Hawai'i, the westernmost state won by Carter was Texas.
Its amazing how none of this matters. No one cares if campaigns switch schedules.

Like trump arriving late to a rally wasn't ever noticed.

We need The West Wing in Italian streaming services, or at least in new DVD edition. Like if you want this!

A glowing light that Vincent and Jules were sent to get for Marcellus Wallace...

@eriktabers4259 It was still poorly executed.
Sorkin would have made it far more entertaining and complex, Vinnick should have won.
I don't see anyone writing S7 and thinking "Bartlet's proteges should lose at the end of the season."

@rabbit251 Technically it was Leo's funeral, not Spencer's.
Santos won without california. Shows how this is fiction, and that's ok

At Vinick had a sense of decency unlike current republicans.

Only reason Vinick had one is because it's a fictional show.
Agreed
He wouldn’t last 10 weeks in a Republican primary today.
