The "My name is Joe, and I am Canadian." ad became a series of ads after immediately striking a chord with the entire nation.
The actor in the first ad became so popular that he would do that exact routine at major sporting events, and people would know all the words.

In the Nissan commercial, the guys were speaking in a Newfoundland accent. That is why you could not understand them lol. Tim Horton was a hockey player in the NHL, he died in a single car accident in 1974. He had opened the Tim Hortons coffee/doughnut shop in 1964. They now serve coffee, doughnuts, soups sandwiches etc.

My late sister-in-law(M) was originally from Newfoundland and Labrador. When I met her, I was about 35 and my then boyfriend, later husband, was 40, and M about 45. M had met her husband D (husband's brother) when she was 18, and had moved from Newfoundland to Victoria at that time. So when I met M, her heavy accent was gone, and I could understand her completely. I wish that I could say the same thing about M's sister when she came to visit Victoria, I felt a fool having to ask her to repeat everything. I knew she was speaking English, but damn that accent was difficult for me. I felt even worse because she had no trouble understanding me, lol. I'd love to visit Newfoundland and Labrador, and seeing as I'm now in Winnipeg, I'm much closer than before.

The end of the poutine commercial: there is a very old French Canadian tall tale (pre-French and Indian War) about the devil taking a bunch of drunken voyageurs (canoe paddling traders) on a ride through the sky in their canoe. It's called La Chasse-galerie (The Flying Canoe). So the guy in the clouds in his canoe is a throwback to that.

Coffee and donuts is still at their core but they now offer pastries, muffins, cookies, iced cappuccinos, soups, sandwiches, breakfast, and chicken burgers. At the Airport there was a lot of confusion and angry passengers demanding answers from the Ladies at the Terminal desk. When my turn came and they handed me a voucher for a hotel and explained what was happening I thanked them very much for their dedication that day. I pointed out that they did not even know if they would be paid their wages and yet they were still on duty. One of them broke down crying at this statement. I never forgot that, and I am still admiring their grit to stick with it after the day they were having. I did get home by Air Canada a couple days later. It's alright... the rest of us outside of Newfoundland need subtitles for Newfinese, too. Hence the subtitles in the commercial, it's a Canadian in-joke. Newfs have a pretty distinct dialect, in part due to how late they joined Confederation compared to the other provinces, thus their culture and language were isolated for longer. You may notice the Irish influence, I've read comments from Irish people who say you could drop some of these Newfoundlanders into Ireland and they'd fit right in. There were many Irish immigrants going back to the 18th century, the majority from Munster, and there was even a Newfoundland Irish dialect (now extinct). Other notable influences are English (especially West Country), Scottish, French, and Mi'kmaq (local indigenous people).

Ok, Tash. At about 4:30 you referenced a cold winter's night and a cup of tea. We just drop to the -20's C from a few days of -50's C with wind chill in Montreal. What constitutes a cold winter's night in Australia? Please note this is not meant as a competition or put down in any way, Eh. Just curious the way it works down under.

Lipton soup is not tea. It's chicken flavoured noodle soup

You won't be flying Canadian Airlines anytime soon, they've been out of business since 2010. Canada's National Flag Carrier is Air Canada.

FFS!!! I'm Canadian senior and I've NEVER seen that Lipton soup commercial, the Tim Hortons are dated beyond belief, and Canadian Airlines doesn't exist anymore and hasn't for decades.

Yop is a yogurt drink. Tim Hortons started out as a coffee and donut, cop hangout place. Now they have soup, wraps etc etc. I wouldn’t say most of these were the top 10. Canadian Airlines doesn’t exist anymore, so won’t be flying them :). Just Air Canada.

The name of the airlines was Canadian Airlines, but they are no longer in business similar to Pan American airlines and Trans World Airlines in the States. Bad Canadian humour would say they were all 'fly by night' companies.

Newfoundlander is English… but it’s another dialect for sure. The vast majority of Canada cannot understand when a group of Newfies are in a room together.
