@@aussietashreacts Tash, to make a backyard rink takes a lot more work than plowing the snow. Many Canadian dads put in countless hours making rinks by repeatedly flooding a level area with water and building up the ice. Some even put up 'boards' & lights. A warm streak of weather can quickly destroy the effort. Any new snowfall also needs to be removed to maintain the ice. They do it mostly for the love of their kids (and perhaps dreams of the kids becoming a professional player).

Glad you liked! The 'top half or bottom half' was very earlier 80's, before the cool ads starting being made. A lot of them were extreme in-jokes that any kid would understand, thereby circumventing various provincial regulators from banning the ads for being targeted towards underage drinkers----like the curved hockey blade, which was completely unregulated in pro hockey until 1967, but even afterwards, rarely called as an infraction---curving a blade was a self-done activity, either over a fire or in the oven---which showed up in an earlier ad (without explanation) where someone came running out of the house with their stick on fire---a frequent result of having heated a blade under the broiler........ As a note, the 'I am Canadian' was the first brought by a new ad firm to revamp the ads--it revolutionized Canadian beer ads from all brands.

Which Canadian doesn't remember getting drunk at a Xmas gathering and going sliding outside or playing hockey at night when the kids finally go to sleep. They had their fun all day in the snow, now it's the parent's turn 😁
Last family gathering, 26 adults out of 32 joined in a snowball fight and drinking at my sister's cabin. Last 6 stayed on the porch watching, cheering and serving beer. Neighbor came over with his truck and his brothers just to give us more light and join our party, great fun.

Whenever we lived on a military base that allowed it, Dad would build a back yard skating rink. He would even put down a base layer of ice a foot thick using the garden hose. He would scrape it smooth every time it snowed. On good years he even carved benches into snowbanks and put down old blankets so we could sit and rest. I learned to skate at age 2, the armor repair folks who worked on tanks made custom sized “baby skates”. It kept my mom sane when her two active kids, hyperactive in my case, could be sent outside to race around until we exhausted ourselves. Plus it meant developing hockey skills every day. Also, dad and the other guys would turn weekend ice fishing trips into skating on the lakes, often shoveling down at least a foot to find the ice. I get very nostalgic even now. Especially when I live in a place where this is not possible. Too warm. One year in Edmonton, we were skating into May without the rink melting too thin.

It's not as common as it used to be but more than a few people used to make a rink in their backyard . In the days before indoor rinks and massive ice making equipment, if there was a pond around, that's where you played and it was common to get together and scrape it off skating behind a snow shovel. These pick-up games were called shinny and that type of rustic game in general was referred to as"pond hockey".
The other way common way which would allow you to play year round was street hockey. In that circumstance it was common for someone to have to yell "CAR" because a vehicle needed to pass through where you were playing. That resulted in the game being paused and the nets moved out of the way. Once the car was gone, the nets were put back and "GAME ON" was yelled (the unwritten rule being that it was cheating to yell game on until everyone was back and ready)
I know this is a bit long winded, but to many (boys especially). this was deeply ingrained in our culture and out lives growing up.
There's a long standing joke that the best goalies are from the prairie provinces because if they miss catching or stopping the puck they'd have to skate forever to bring it back (the humour being that because the Prairies are so flat there's no hills or anything geographically to stop the puck)

I have an Australian friend who refers to Canadians as Snow Aussie's.

the reference to the apollo mission is actually pretty subtle, but a few canadians from Avro after the the arrow failed went over and helped with designing and building these space crafts. it was argued whether they could bring a canadian flag along as the US at the time was not capable of completing the project due to lack of facility, so it was sent to canada to construct the landing gear that went to the moon. it was decided no flag would be brought along as it would affect the weight to much (i heard it in an interview who knows if its fact), but Armstrong snuck one aboard anyway. just a fun tid bit behind that one

Oh man... what a trip down memory lane. Those commercials were amazing. And yes, we do make backyard rinks. My old house had a pond. We used it every winter... even though a real ice rink was less than 100ft away.

Love your site dear, we always had outdoor rinks as kids, or frozen ponds, although I never played organized hockey, I did play shinny occasionally, and I got a part time job driving a Zamboni (Ice Resurfacing Machine) at a local ice rink, that's where I met my wife, I was 16 and she was 14, I still tell people that she was a Zamboni Groupie, even after 45 years of marriage. P.S. luv your tats.
