I am a retired Patricia with 30 years service. The PPCLI intentionally do not follow any British Light Infantry traditions for a very specific reason. When the Regiment was formed in 1914, our Founder Hamilton Gault sent an officer to Britain to determine what the correct drill manual should be for Light Infantry (not Rifles). The officer returned to report that no two British Light Infantry Regiments could agree on what "Light Infantry" drill actually consisted of, so the Founder decided that we would stick with standard Infantry drill, which we have done ever since. The only unique PPCLI drill evolution is the Regimental "Fix Bayonets" in which the Right Guides of each division of the guard march forward several paces, halt, and complete the first part of "Fix Bayonets". The remainder of each division takes its timing from its Right Guide to complete the remainder of the movement. On the command "Attention" the Right Guides return to the ranks.
To correct another post, there are only two Light Infantry regiments in the Canadian Army: the PPCLI and the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (Reserve). All other Infantry regiments follow the traditions of Line, Rifles, Highland, Irish or Fusilier regiments.

Lol Canadian Army Regiments seem not to be able to agree on a few things about drill. I've noticed in particular the arm cuts and brake steps when halting seem to be pretty different even among the 3 reg force infantry regiments. Not sure which parts are due to tradition and which parts are just different interpretations of the not-always-clear drill manual.

GOD I hated parades. But the worst day was always the final practice BEFORE the actual event. Plenty of screaming and handing out of HUNDREDS of EXTRAS! And ANYTHING...could warrant an extra. Or 5...or 10. "EYEBROW HAIR OUT PLACE! 10 EXTRAS!!! SEE ME AFTER THIS PARADE!!!" or..."BREATHING INCORRECTLY!!! 20 EXTRAS!!! SEE ME AFTER THIS PARADE!!!" And of COURSE...being in the RCHA...we marched at 120...to the minute! Not the std 110! Ouch! SHIN SPLINTS! Ouch!

"Light infantry", but line infantry scarlet coats and not light infantry drill?

Correct, but doesn't answer my question

Of course they can. It is just surprising that with the common tradition and close links that a 'light Infantry' regiment does not appear to be light infantry.

Green Jackets and French Grey at 120
I agree 100% RW, it is a strange one ...and I am a former member of this battalion....Our longest regimental affiliation is with the The Rifles (The RGJ's)) when we fought together in the First one...you would think.
It was the last privately raised regiment in the Empire and you would think all accouterments and drill would have to get "The seal"....We also lost our band...and are left with the drum line...which I wish had made it over for the mount.

It is Standard Canadian Armed Forces drill. What ever country will keep the same uniform and drill?

As far as I understand, Canada's "line regiments" have for the longest time been light infantry.
