Ppl who are stuck in a rut typically have been training for a long time and aren't looking for short quick fix methods.
I've been training for 7 years and thing that got me out of my rut was starting wrestling, judo, boxing, and mma. It puts the whole bjj ground grappling into perspective when ppl are throwing and striking you.

It may be that you and I mean different things by the word 'rut'. For me it's essentially synonymous with 'plateau'

I'm not sure if my plateauing is due to my lack of intricate details such as grip fighting or I'm just not picking up and using the techniques/concepts that I just learn during the instructional portion of the class. When I'm rolling and it gets really heated, I resort to muscling it or bad habits...like my ego gets in the way. Any advice for this? 5 yrs of training and 🟣 here.

Just make gripfighting the main focus of your training rounds. Attacks: they don’t matter right now. Sweeps: those are accidental. Guard passes: great if they happen but that’s not the point. Grips grips grips!
