Fantastic, thank you. I'm checking out the Coles primarily for my Uilleann Pipes but also for my Duduk, I'm told it works great on the Duduk. Thanks again, great review.

Yes I’d think it would sound great with the Duduk. It seems to favour wood if you know what I mean. I bought one because it made my violin sound like one!

Thanks for posting this Dan. This is the only video I've been able to find of a violin played into a Coles 4038. It's very enlightening. I have a couple of questions:
You say, the "Coles went through the cloud lifter and then into a Universal Audio stereo pre, the Apollo". Have you tried it without the Cloud Lifter? I have a friend who records passive ribbons into an Apollo and doesn't need any additional gain. Is the 4038 lower output than the average passive ribbon? Does it actually require the Cloud Lifter?
I have three different types of passive ribbon. They are definitely all better sounding on violin than any of my condensers, but I don't get that sound you get from the 4038. Have you compared the 4038 to any other ribbons?

Hi Alan! Cheers for watching. I bought the Coles as I used one in a studio and loved it. I haven’t compared it to other ribbon mics...
With regard to the cloud lifter, if you have a good interface with very low noise, you can use the mic without it, but the level is quite low. If however you do lots of multitrack strings for example, the level thing would be less of an issue...

I’ve been using a Neumann TLM 103 for 10 years, but often wonder if I would have been better off with the C414 because of it’s variable polar patterns.

Coles 4038 attenuates 6db of signal per octave above 15 kHz.

Yes of course. It won’t be a sharp cutoff. It has actually a subtle area of detail at the very top.

What a dramatic difference the Coles makes!!! It is so much more pleasing to the ears. Your violin playing is so soothing and you play with a lot of soul. I'm thinking of getting the Coles 4038 to record my original acoustic guitar songs. How to you like your UA Apollo interface? Are you using any of the preamp emulations. Thanks for sharing and keep on playing and recording. It sounds great.

Thanks! I love the UA and all its plugins. It’s just next level stuff. In this demo though, I used none. Just the creamy sound of the Coles..

LOL! 2:09 There is NO EQ anywhere here: just some compression/limiting" So it's modified but just not the way most people would do it.

Just for the purposes of comparison in the video. Of course in practice, there would be the usual bass roll-off and perhaps a little boost of ultra highs, but completely dependent on the source material..

@@DanBakerMusic check out Tammy Sypniewski she fun and has a handful of lighting tutorials, perks things up a bit. Even a small string of Christmas lights in the back ground brings the setting to life. Thanks for all the helpful videos you create for us musicians & creators. :)

Stop keeping the myth alive that fantom power destroy a ribbon mic. This is only true for tranformerless ribbons and those are at least 80 years old

I’ve seen a 4038 lose its life because of phantom but also been told by some that it’s harmless!
