    I wish I could’ve been alive to experience the hype and watch the film with audiences back in 89. Was there ever hype for any other film that was on the same level for you?

    • @cbake76
      @cbake76  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for watching! I think the hype "level" has been met by maybe Star Wars Episodes VI, I and VII and maybe some of the Marvel movies -- but the "feeling" of the hype was unique, and will probably never be matched again. These days (and as was the case with Return of the Jedi), the buildup to huge hype is at least a year, if not more than that -- and you also have the internet feeding you almost-daily updates of some sort or another. Back then, there was a trailer in late 1988 (you had to be at just the right movie at just the right time for it to play), but most of us didn't know anything until the late winter/spring of 1989. And then it showed up, and EVERYBODY was wearing Batman shirts and talking about the movie coming. Even though there were Michael Keaton doubters (he was only really known for comedy before), haters didn't have the voice they do today without the internet, so it was a pretty universally positive hype the whole time. There was really nothing quite like it. But on top of it all, it was just cool to see people excited for a comic book movie -- something really only the first two Superman movies had achieved at that point.

      @@cbake76 It’s almost unbelievable that people just naturally started gravitating towards Batman merch on their own without the aid of the internet.

    • @cbake76
      @cbake76  2 года назад +2

       @Jalen Johnson Well, it was also an era where everyone bought their things at stores...and seeing a whole clothing session with bat symbols everywhere sparks a psychological kind of "I need one of these" feeling. Then the people who bought those start showing up in droves out on the street and everyone else realizes they need a Batman shirt too.

    • @jalenjohnson1662
      @jalenjohnson1662 2 года назад +2

      @@cbake76 Also, that symbol had an abstract look to it for people who didn’t read Batman comics. I’ve seen numerous posts of people saying they thought it was the inside of someone’s mouth, or that it looked like a Jack O’Lantern. I guess it being everywhere forced people to take note that it was related to Batman.
      I also had another question, was Batman even that popular to non-comic book readers before the hype began in 89?

    • @cbake76
      @cbake76  2 года назад +2

      @@jalenjohnson1662 Yes, I remember my uncle making a comment like that when the hype was in effect.
      Batman was popular to non-comics readers, but in a much different way. He was the Adam West version to most people. Superman was the most popular-BY FAR, really-with Batman, Hulk and Wonder Woman also up there because of their TV shows. Probably Spidey right after them, though his show was awful and mostly forgotten.

    Batman was the first movie I ever saw when I was 5 months old in June 1989 and is still my *FAVORITE* as Keaton plays him as a more silent guardian and watchful protector while Bale plays him as such a loud and angry character with throat cancer. Tim Burton and Michael Keaton were the ones who first started and forever changed Batman into a dark and serious character in ‘89 and as far as Bat-Gadgets go, nothing is cooler than the ‘89 and ‘92 Batmobile Tim Burton designed compared to Bale and Affleck’s tank. Unlike Christopher Nolan’s and Matt Reeves’ version, Tim Burton’s Batmobile had a very artistic bat-motif with: _wings, a jet-turbine engine, spherical bombs, a pair of forward-facing Browning machine guns, side-mounted disc launchers, and chassis-mounted shinbreakers, side-mounted grappling hook launchers and a central "foot" capable of lifting and rotating it 180°. In addition to its armor plated body, a heavy armor cocoon, oil slick dispensers, smoke emitters, and in extereme circumstances, a "Batmissile" mode to avoid capture._
    None of the other 6 so called Batmobiles can top that. Tim also chose by far the best person _(Danny Elfman)_ to create the most iconic Batman theme also used in Batman TAS. If it wasn’t for Tim Burton’s dark and creative idea of how The Dark Knight should be, Batman would still be dancing in blue and gray tights on the screen.

      *I also find Jack Nicholson to be the best Joker for 6 reasons:*
      *1. Nicholson's Joker was actually very funny.*
      _Heath Ledger and Jared Leto’s Jokers barely had any sense of humor._
      *2. Nicholson's Joker was incomparably closer to the authentic comic book character.*
      _Heath and Jared were completely new characters, unrelated to the original in almost every aspect of their interpretation._
      *3. Jack's Joker killed more people in the original movie.*
      _So much for the Nolan's and DCEU’s alleged “darker and scarier” Jokers._
      *4. Jack Nicholson's Joker had a very interesting On-Screen Origin, and a motive for revenge (so did Batman).*
      _Ledger and Leto’s Joker had nothing._
      *5. Jack was an euphoric type of lunatic, closer to Schizophrenic, rather than Ledger's and Leto’s anarchistic Psycho type.*
      _Nicholson wins again._
      *6. Finally, Jack Nicholson's Joker was classier, more stylish, he had better makeup, more convincing smile, and he was an expert at chemistry, his weapons were absolutely cooler compared to Nolan's and DCEU’s Jokers.*
      _Just to be clear, this is more comic book accurate as well. Just as in DC Comics #168 introduced the Joker's first origin story, Jack Napier vanishes in this movie after falling into a vat of chemicals as he tries to escape from Batman resulting in disfigurement leading him to adopt the name "Joker", from the playing card figure he came to resemble while the other versions are just unnecessary modifications, usually ranging far away from the original story._

    Ah, I love videos like these - Such a great time capsule and so personal.
    The first time I saw Batman 89 was in Spanish (I do not speak Spanish). I bugged my parents to buy me the VHS from a WB Store in an airport in Spain. I think they must have known it wouldn't be in English but were too worn down by the end of a stressful family holiday to argue. Imagine my disappointment when I got home and tried to watch it.
    When it was shown on TV a few years later, I dug out the Spanish VHS, put tape over the copyright protection switch-thingy and re-recorded it. That was the version I watched for years and I still remember where all the ad-breaks are when I watch the film now.
    Can't wait for the game rankings, Chris! I'll be there for the premiere, Batman shirt and all.

This movie was everything I'd wanted Batman to be; dark, brooding, an angry unstoppable force against evil. I may have started the Son out on it a little too soon a few years later when he was only 3 or 4, but with this and Star Wars, I cemented our future together here As Father and Son. ;)

    It's funny how you mention using your money to buy comics or video games as a kid, and that's a dilemma I have at 35, haha. Off the top of my head the Genesis game, the NES game, the Game Boy game, I believe there was an arcade game and I remember seeing ads for a PC game at the back of Game Players magazine.
    I was 5 when this movie came out, so I don't remember the hype machine perse, but I do have memories of the time around Batman. I had that Joker sweater with the HAHAHA on it, little did I know it was taken from the killing joke and I was wearing it at 5 or 6. I remember going to P.E.I for summer vacation and going to a restaurant called Harvey's which they didn't have in Newfoundland. They had a giant, plastic cup with the emblem on it. Between my brother and I we had the batmobile, the bagwing, the three action figures: Batman, Joker and Bob the Joker's goon (so quaint by today's standards), heck, we probably had doubles of some. We for sure had the soundtrack on cassette. I remember the batmobile making an awful screeching noise if you wheeled it on the ground, and it had that cheap plastic cover to mimic the shield from the movie. I saw this in Carbonear Cinema, I actually can't believe my mom took me now, and I recall her covering my eyes during the joy buzzer scene.

I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to see the film in a movie theater (just not in 1989 though since I wasn't born yet). My local movie theater plays old movies once a week, and in March of last year, they decided to play Batman. Even though I already owned the film on DVD, I felt that this was a movie I just had to experience in a movie theater, so I went to see it. No regrets. :)
