    The “are you comfortable with romance” question is one I actually ask prospective players as a dm! It really works when finding what players will and will not mesh well together alongside getting the idea of boundaries. Granted, he was creepy afterwards, but I gotta advocate for asking the question as a DM

    • @emberfist8347
      @emberfist8347 10 месяцев назад +104

      I think the issue is he asked it so early. It went from "what got you into the game" to that question. I don't think OP would have a problem if they were asking about her limits about what she wanted in the campaign before that question because as you said it is about boundaries.

    • @dudewhatthewhat8983
      @dudewhatthewhat8983 10 месяцев назад +49

      Yes I agree, and do it as well. Although I do lead into it a bit more, and explaining my intentions, as well as having other questions like: Are you comfortable with detailed descriptions of violence? Are you comfortable with themes such as abuse and SA? Do you have any potential triggers? As well as other stuff.
      I usually prefer more horror oriented campaigns, and find horror to feel more grounded when it comes from realistic tragedy. And that is the type of stuff where you REALLY need to know boundaries. An example from around a year ago: (which quickly mentions SA, so skip to next paragraph if you need or want to.)
      I Had a campaign where a bunch of enemies were the ghosts of people who had been r*ped and brutally murdered, (inspired by Jack the Ripper) then brought to life by the person who did it and forced to serve him. Taking him down didn’t only mean no more ghost, it also meant final peace for all his victims, and even ended with all the ghosts dragging his screaming soul into hell when the players took him down.
      This allowed me to start out with describing messed up corpses, and ghosts, using some good old body horror, but as they found out what happened, every ghosts they encountered now had the added horror of the events behind it.
      It was super effective and we had a great time but WAUW could that have gone wrong if I hadn’t double checked with EVERYONE there, how comfortable they were with such things. I want to make them feel fear, it’s part of the reason we do this, but NOT by reliving trauma or having a panic attack. That is far from fun for anyone involved, especially the person going through it, so a good understanding of each player, gives me the perfect map of what the dues and don’t are for a specific campaign.

      Comparing this with my worst story being someone trying to hog one of my rp partners(I've done mostly forum rpg so it's mostly one on one or big group events) wanting to romance EVERY character she had. She knew damn well one of the characters was into mine but bc i am a dummy in the clinical way, I didn't know until I confessed. Long story short, the other girl was one of the administrators of the forum so when she left over one character of 4 romancing someone else, my amnesiac wizard with DID, the entire place had to restructure and soooo many things fell through. I ended up feeling guilty and unmotivated so I left, but guess who still can talk to the people there bc she didn't try to claim someone who's straight and dating the same dude for like 10 years. Maybe I am her RPG nightmare.

      Also it's funny as hell. I start cracking up at the cutscene every time Volo pulls out the icepick. I've had him remove my character's eye in every one of my 6 playthroughs and I still let out a giggle every time.

      Same. It's one of the reasons I INSIST on playing male characters who are explicitly Ace as well. Less likely to be harassed at least IN GAME. I will only play a female character if I know I am in a very safe group. I usually make all my characters OBSESSED with their goal, so I have an excuse to turn down any romance or sexual stuff.

    • @shadowdroid776
      @shadowdroid776 9 месяцев назад

      I'm not ace, but I seemed to find a way around the constant horndogging on NPCa with my campaign. I had a friend that wanted to bang literally any woman she could in my campaign. So I brought in the "roll to seduce" concept, I gave her a DC check to succeed (no modifiers) that was based on how difficult it would be for each NPC to be romanced. Here's an example: if she wanted to bang a married straight woman, DC was much higher compared to someone that was single and at least bisexual.
      She failed every check (took it in stride and laughed it off which was as great) except one. Nat 20. The entire party demanded I let her bang the NPC, and clearly wanted to make me spell it out. So I did, and made them uncomfortable by going into detail. She banged a tabaxi, none of us are furries and they had to listen to how her character banged an anthro cat. Never happened again lol

    I love how the first story could be summed up like: "Boyfriend accidentally saves girlfriend from a super akward and creepy social situation by sneezing loudly." and it would make perfect sense.
    Addon Edit as I kept watching: It's a pity that the DM in the second story valued shock value more than the player's fun and agency. I'm pretty sure if a dm asks the player if this could happen and discussed with them in advance it could have been a pretty cool plot twist and an intresting chance of development for the character. Of course in this case the shock value is mostly gone for that player, but it's still a twist for everyone else. It's not worth it to make a risky move like this as a DM as this can ruin the game for that player. This is the equivalent of telling a player how their character feels in a situation, it sounds cool in your head as the DM but it can really pull you out of the game as a player. The only thing the players have real control over is their own characters and actions, you cant just joink that away to try to surprise them.

Because he wasn't pushing any of the right buttons, in fact he was pushing all the wrong ones. If he did try to push the right buttons he might of had success but instead he was impatient and was hoping sexual harassment would get him to his goal faster.

    The note on the last story, about changing backstories is okay with caution, is a really good one. In one game im in, i play a noble paladin who was raised as a knight. Both his parents are dead, but notably his mother died in childbirth.
    Now, three important things to know or remember. 1, nobles have a scroll of pedigree. 2, due to having relatively low contact with my extended family (bc of distance) and being ND, i tend to forget that extended family exists. Parents, siblings, MAYBE grandparents. 3, i... really love to think and help the DM (my bf of 8 years) by giving him ideas of what could be neat to implement, such as suggesting that drake warden's of an elevated status should have armour made of their drake's scales.
    So im sat there one day, daydreaming on my way to work, when i realise that not only does my PC's mother not have a maiden name, but i dont have any concept for any grandparents besides the aasimar line, nor any idea of like. Aunts or cousins. I use a surname generator but his last name is Blackwood so i dont want to use another NounNoun name. So i use the french one just to have something different. Im also canadian, so theres that.
    Well one thing leads to another and i bring up the idea of his family on his mother's side being from some french region, since its been established in game previously that his maternal great grandmother was a traveller. And now theres a region or island in this world with a name, based upon a made up river with a similar name, a language that comes from it, denonyms, rough explanation for what formed the language, what each name actually means, and a monastery to train peace clerics and mercy monks.
    In other words, i realised my characters mother didnt have a maiden name and accidentally created france, helping to flesh out the world a bit

About how they feel about what happened and how they feel about other characters and what they might do next. So I get where the fighter was coming from honestly. I have a few characters from Games that I've have to put in a "what if" box. Where I have the game version of them that doesn't change states and then the other version of them who I do whatever I want with in my own head it other projects.

    With a few more months of game development completed and practice with mapmaking it might just be a killer piece of software for ttrpgs.

    One thing a DM could do with the SA knight (although it probably wouldn’t work as Knight probably isn’t the sort to recognise the parallel) would be, as he’s a noble, to have his family recall him home and tell him they’ve arranged a marriage for him, then make his bride be utterly repulsive to him with a horrible, repellant personality, and have her constantly trying to SA him the same way he’s been trying to to female NPCs. Someone with an iota of self awareness would connect the dots and realise the error of their ways. Of course, if they were capable of such self introspection they probably wouldn’t have reached that point in the first place. Plus, a good DM probably shouldn’t be comfortable subjecting a player to SA let alone subjecting the rest of the group to it by proximity, so this probably isn’t a viable option in the first place.

    • @ArcCaravan
      @ArcCaravan 10 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, not everyone views SA as a justified form of karma. Doesn't help how it has been considered a form of punishment for any promiscuity, like the victim had it coming or practically asked for it.

    • @lordofuzkulak8308
      @lordofuzkulak8308 10 месяцев назад

      @@ArcCaravan agreed. Also, I think I misspoke when I said SA; I think what I had in mind was more harassment than full on assault. But that’s barely an improvement, and again is not something a DM should be comfortable forcing on a player or forcing the other players to sit through. It’s one think to use that in say a film to show men ‘hey, see this shitty thing? See how much you’d hate it if it happened to you? Well that’s how women feel when you treat them like meat’ but it’s a whole other thing to use it in a game and actually subject someone to.
      To be honest I wasn’t thinking of it as karmic punishment; earlier today I was watching the most recent FactFiend video which is on the Barbie movie and they were discussing how so many men were getting outraged over stuff in that and being oblivious to how it was being used to explore the themes of how women get treated irl, and I had that in the back of my mind when I was thinking of turning the Knight player’s action back at them as a learning point. But again, even if it was okay to subject them to it, such a person is not the sort of person that would reflect on it and learn from it. Sadly, if anything they’d probably use it as justification in their own mind to double down on their actions/attitude.

      Wouldn't achieve anything but a little personal revenge, guys like more often or not believe that men behaving like this is justified, normal or even attractive whereas women or gay men cannot act like that for any reason, ever. It would just piss him off and never become a lesson learned. Especially if multiple attempts at sitting down and discussing why the fully consensual lesbian relationship is different from his blatant SA/SH and coercion, didn't get through to him.

    I just joined my first online game via found via and lfg Reddit. Was very nervous in the beginning because I have been watching tons of your videos, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt.
    Well... I'm so glad I did that and put myself out there. So far we're all having an absolut blast as far as I can tell, and the only issues we've had were related to scheduling, but we still manage to meet regularly.
    In a weird way, I don't think I would have even thought about joining an online group if it wasn't for your videos, because I thought to myself: and can't all be terrible - and I was right!
    So thank you Crispy, and to the people discouraged by negative experiences - don't let it get you down. Try again, if you're mentally up for it.
    Have a lovely day everyone

    Hearing so many horror stories about finding games/DMs on Reddit, I'm beginning to think I had the Devil's Own Luck when it came to finding a game! Went on r/Traveller, asked if anyone in a compatible time zone was running a game and open for a new player. Very quickly got a message from a bloke in Canada whose Sunday evening game coincided with my Saturday afternoons (or late morning, depending on who is on daylight saving time). Chatted over Discord, ended up joining the game and I've been playing with this group for over a year now. Excellent Referee/GM, great fellow players... It's been an absolute blast. Gutted to know that other people's experiences have been so bad.

    I’ll be honest, I’m guilty of sometimes wanting to build more up in my backstory as the game goes on and I get to know my character. However! I never change some main fundamentals of the character and always clear it through my dm, who is very experienced (I do not bring this thing to a table where the dm isn’t as experienced and is more a teaching table). Those are also my rp heavy campaigns though and the ones where I came in as a new player for an ongoing campaign. I am mostly filling in plot holes for the backstory at that point so the dm has stuff to work with. For instance, I realized recently that my character, with the relationship they have with their faction, means they need a handler and I had written the original mentor to be off on a secret mission. This means I had to come up with the faction’s substitute handler for my character in the mean time. So I discussed it with my dm and they approved me working on creating that character between games. Final say still goes with the dm on if this goes into the game and I make sure not to make any references one way or another until that approval process is completed. So yes, I spend time between games coming up with more backstory things but I keep my dm in the loop and try to keep it to a level where I’m not overstepping what my role is. Also I always keep the tone in mind too and also work on making sure that I’m not overlapping too much into another player’s character arc and stealing the spotlight of a moment that means a lot to them. Also not inventing too many “I know a guy” type of npcs. I’m making ones that make sense. For instance, the substitute handler? Is a former student of my character’s current mentor and they only weren’t concurrent students of said mentor because mentor is of a long lived race. My character doesn’t know everything. I like my character not knowing everything. Half the fun for me is exploring things and seeing how the party’s characters overlap, interact, and how their backstories relate and change. If I know too much, the discovery is ruined. Anyway, my point is, yeah I’m guilty of having too much time to think on my character and wanting to work more on their story, but I also temper it to keep it respectful and not stress my dm or overshadow any other party member. I don’t want to be a main character. I like being more of a support or side for the most part. I just also love getting to know my characters and filling that in. But this is also just because I play in roleplay and storytelling heavy campaigns and this type of thing can pay off as you try to convey more nuanced characteristics. Also I never try to change tone. I like building my characters around the tone and themes that are ongoing. And I always think of the implications of what I’m writing and if any of this might make the dm or other players uncomfortable. I like collaboration which was one of the biggest draws for me….oh and I just don’t really like to play edgy characters. I have some dark and difficult stuff in a backstory sometimes but those are in the table from day one so they can be discussed on how we are approaching that and how appropriate they are, not to mention comfort level. For instance, I have a character right now who is dealing with grief as a running theme to their arc. There arc isn’t about vengeance or forgiveness or being saved or whatever. It’s about learning to live with that grief and being ok with it. The other dimension of that character is also that we deal with parentification of the eldest child (for some, but yes, for this character’s household). Further, we have a dynamic within said family where my character loves their family member but also wants to walk away from them all for their toxic behavior towards them. That is what we address. Is the issue about abuse? Not really. It’s about taking on responsibilities that are not fair to a the eldest but they do so anyway because someone needs to. And then there is the caregiver burnout my character faces later in their life now that all the “children” are grown. The idea is that the character feels “unmoored” for most of their life but also weighted down by responsibilities to the point they have rarely allowed themselves to make decisions for themselves and figure out who they are beyond that context. So anyway, yeah I fill in pieces of this character’s backstory over time as dm and I outline what those family dynamics are, how the relationship with the faction factors in, and how the grief affects the progression and regression of my characters strengths and flaws. And yes, my character has flaws. They are a compulsive character. Yes, that is a bad thing when you are already on burnout from that and don’t limit yourself, but are doing it as a matter of habit than choice. So yes, a flaw. Basically taking responsibility for things well beyond their power and letting others pile those on them without establishing the boundary that it isn’t ok (yes, above table I talk this through with the party and dm so I myself don’t feel that way). It’s just the story I want to tell. But this means dm and I have to make sure we are in the same page with these relationships because they play such a key factor to the background character arc going on for my character. And yes, it’s background. I like character arcs that subtly happen in the background of the rest of the ones going on. I’m told that my style is a subtle style of roleplay that factors in a lot of foreshadowing and is conveyed in little actions and careful word choices that slowly paint a picture and the changes.
    But, again, this type of building more into the backstory? That part I only do with experienced dms at tables it’s appropriate for in terms of play style. I do not want to stress my dm or overstep and so I check in regularly with that part, make sure they actually are ok with what I’m doing and how I’m behaving and remind them it’s ok to call me out on things if I’m a bit much so I can and will change how I’m being. It’s supposed to be fun after all. Not more work.

    So, I wouldn't call it a horror story, but there was a guy I played alongside for a while who had patience issues. Fun guy overall, but he just could not wait for a change of pace. We'll call him Paladin, since played one in the main campaign.
    Basically, whenever plot was happening, he wanted to rush to the next combat, and whenever combat was happening, he got bored of it if it lasted more than a few rounds.
    There were two standout moments for me, though. The first was when we ran into a couple guys whose plot we had foiled earlier in the campaign. They were actually fairly chill about the foiling, so I was prepared to have a fun chat with them, but Paladin immediately leapt into battle after an exchange of greetings. I responded by sitting on the side of the road and watched as he got his butt kicked, sarcastically mutter his catchphrase "it's that time again."
    The second time was when the party discovered a sealed monster. Two of us decided we were probably strong enough to beat it, but Paladin decided he wanted no part of it and left. Even one fighter down, we still managed to kill the Thought Devourer and its minions.

    About Talespire, it's actually pretty good. You don't have to build every map yourself as there is an online library of lot of location/map/slab other players built. I run Starfinder campaign on Talespire and am in Cyberpunk campaign on Talespire. The sudden shift of where party will be depending on decision CAN throw GM off but you can do a reasonable search and drop to find good enough map within five min. (In which case you'd just ask players to take 5 while setting that up)
