Mr. Crane showed up in a 2nd pool hall in Elizabeth City, NC. He was watching us play. He asked if he could play and did. Every once in a while he would make an unbelievable shot. The owner had a book of world champions and found his picture and info. He was pushing 90 at the time. City Billiards was where Luther Lassiter hung out reading western novels in paperback. Mr. Crane didn't know there were 2 pool halls there and I took him to the 2nd one to see Lassiter. Those were the times!
luther lassiter was quoted as saying that if he watched a man play pool for an hour and he missed one shot, he could beat him. been reading about him for a long time, what a pleasure to watch them play, even though theyre 40 years past their prime
Had pleasure of living in Lassiters hometown and watched him play every once in awhile. One time a shark showed up and was taking everybody's money. Lassiters came in and the owner took him massive and told him what was happening. Lassiters showed some interest in the game and the shark started goading him to get in. Lassiters played reluctant to get in but he did. In about an hour he had all the money back and then some. Before the guy left he took off his baseball cap to show his white hair and told the guy to go look at the photograph in the back with Luther in his tux playing in Vegas. The guy stormed out!
Though it is really nice to see these legends play...it is a little sad to see them miss shots (due to age) that they would have made blindfolded in their prime...let's not forget why they are considered legends.
Exactly right. I get a little incensed at some of the ignorant comments about these guys not being able to compete today. They're over 70! Look up the videos of Luther Lassiter vs Cisero Murphy for the Straight Pool championship back in the 60s, it's of course a different player.
@@Betterthangoldandsilver What does "they're over 70!" have to do with if they can compete today. They can't. Their days are over and done. Get out your damn feelings you emotional kiddo.
Even at their advanced age, they played way better than I ever did, even in my prime -- and for that matter, better than most (maybe any) players I've ever known.
Year? Lassiter’s Wikipedia page mentions “January 1982 at Harrah's Marina Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, and again in 1983, at the Claridge Hotel and Casino, also in Atlantic City”. Mosconi’s autobiography lists these as well, further noting this tournament was introduced in ‘81 and ceased in ‘84. So, was this ‘81 or ‘84?
I agree made me lol, maybe if USA concentrated completely on snooker then some young upcoming kids who are just starting out could possibly become great at snooker. However for pool players already in their careers no chance, the very loose fundamentals especially stance, bridge, accuracy etc that USA pool players have & can get away with in pool compared to a snooker would really hinder their chances.
Love seeing these classics! I can remember watching these and running to my table. Great video!
Love watching these old school players.
Love the old matches. Thanks.
Good job Insidepool, I love these old matches.
Mr Crane was a true gentleman.
Mr. Crane was a stand up gentleman in his closing interview. What a refreshing contrast to players like Earl Strickland and Jason Shaw.

@@robertstotesbury8005 Sitting around a pool hall reading novels in between schooling people on the tables sounds pretty heavenly.

I don’t know about that , they are wearing monkey suits and shooting in front cameras and lights.
That would not make me relaxed.

I recorded all of these tournaments on VHS. Then gave them all away. 😕
Those Gandy tables are so dang short. I’ve played on those before and being 5’10” it kills my back after a while. Give me a Gold Crown any day.
The camera missed the best shot of the match. The guy with Hopkins is just in the way and the table isn't level at the side pockets.
Best shot of the match, and they didn't show it...
CorwynGC ikr lol not even in replay.,,,,which they had and used prior...🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
Im glad that they stopped the overhead view.
I like the current one much better.
Wow, this is pool history going at it.
You sure can tell this was before Simonis cloth.
Deacon Crane to use mere mortals
Nice to have. Do we get to know the year of the event?

What year was this?
OMG. The comment that Americans would overtake the English snooker players? No way known.

I might agree Allison Fisher started in snooker
