    I know you're kidding by the found part, but for other beginner smiths looking for steel I got a tip.
    I work as a mechanic full time and old parts like springs and axles are good high carbon. We just throw them in a pile and let anyone take what they want. As long as they don't make a mess. Of course ask the shop first. Some shops take their scrap in themselves.

      Simply ask if they got any scrap you can grab. CV axles are good because most of the time the joints fail. We personally give it away for free (small independent shop)

      Yep! It actually was found. My uncle got it in a bucket of tools he bought at a junk sale. It was the only Allen wrench in the bunch. You’re absolutely right on going through the scrap bin at an auto shop, with permission of course. My second forge was a brake rotor. Axles, being 4140 or thereabouts make excellent tooling. Springs make great blades. The only catch is that once in a while there are stress cracks that don’t show up ‘til there’s a lot of work and time invested.
