I've been playing piano, classically trained, for almost 50 years. I believe I have earned the right to have an opinion as to the "greatness" of a pianist. Lang Lang is an incredibly gifted and passionate pianist whose interpretation of Rach 2 is refreshing. People who criticize either do not truly know or understand music from the perspective of the pianist or they are just cruel and jealous of the talent others possess. Many people may think people are merely born with a gift. Yes it's true there MUST be a certain amount of raw, natural talent involved - this is obvious - but what people don't see are the thousands and thousands of hours one practices to achieve greatness. It's a discipline most are never willing or capable of achieving. So a word to "critics"....once you are honestly able to say you spent your childhood, teen years, and many adult years hovering over a keyboard of other musical instrument, playing until your hands hurt, wanting to stop yet can't stop because the passion that compels you to play exceeds any physical pain or social price you pay for missing out on many things..hen you can have a platform and a right to criticize a true musician. Until then, you need to be very careful. When one lays their hands on a musical instrument to play in front of others- they are actually laying their soul bare to show the world. It's a vulnerability few can ever understand and certainly something small minded people can not respect.
So well said! People may not realize how vulnerable artists are. Their work is EVERYTHING and it does come from the soul. And they read these types of comments! They aren't distant statues. They are human beings and yes they are also able to read what you say. So unless you've poured tens of thousands of hours into your instrument, don't register your ignorance before such greatness.
True but I am still looking (with my ears!) for the perfect rendition of the 2nd movement of this concerto, for my subjective pleasure....THIS one is very close to it, thanks, also, to the conductor, whom,at his time, has rendered as a pianist, one of the best, in my opinion.
@@frankG335 you are so correct, I am a professional flute player with the San Jose symphony, have loved every minute of it. When I’m not playing I’m listening to great music. Feel sorry for people that don’t appreciate beautiful music. Lang Lang only comes once in a lifetime. He is so gifted.

I can think of nothing better than listening to my two favorite grand pianists, Lang Lang and the young Russian pianists-Alexander Malofeev-playing Beethoven and Rachmaninoff one who ushered in the Romantic Movement and the other closed the Romantic Movement in classical music. Everyone who loves this music knows Beethoven and Rachmaninoff as well as Lang Lang. But not everyone may know about Alexander Malofeev. I have listened to almost everything he has had posted on RUclips and his talent, charm and music capability as well as his ability to show what and how he feels about the music he is playing through his eyes and face is nothing short of miraculous and so much like Lang Lang. His perfection of what he plays is nothing short of genius. There are so many young talented pianists trying to make their mark in the music world today but only one or two have the ability to break through the glass ceiling that holds them to mediocrity. But just as Lang Lang broke through the glass so has Mr. Malofeev. He will one day be, in my opinion and in the opinions of so many others who are familiar with his talent and artistry, be recognized as one of the very few greatest pianists who has given the world a loving gift with his talent. As to this performance by Lang Lang like all his performances it is one of his very best. So what if his debatable body motions are somewhat distractions, does one attend a performance to stare at the artist or to listen to his artistry, talent and the music the pianist plays with his or her fingers? If the former then you are wasting your money attending a performance like this one. Just go, close your eyes and listen. Then you won’t be bothered. Lang Lang is a true genius. No, he is not the replacement for Vladimir Horowitz for no one is and may never be and he has never claimed he was. But he is equal to every other pianists living today if not better than all but one or two others. And he is only equal in talent to them. Thank you, Lang Lang. I have seen you perform live thrice and you have given me all I could ever ask for in a performance by a great performer.
I would say that attending a performance has to do with both, yes both, aspects: the listening AND the visual. How could it be otherwise? If one is bothered and distracted by unusual facial and bodily gestures made by the player, then the viewer should stare down at the floor for the whole performance? And regarding the "expressiveness" of Malofeev's "eyes and face", it's pretty well non-existant. His face retains a shall we say, a neutral quality, and his perfunctory way of bowing shows not the slightest "connection" with the audience. He may as well be bowing before a brick wall. However, I've enjoyed some (but by no means all) of his performances, and perhaps five years from now , he will have shed his general tendency of choosing tempos that simply don't correspond to the composers' intentions. In that regard, there's an attractive pianist (first name Khatia) out there whose concept of the "giusto" (i.e. "right") tempo is is as far from the mark as Hawaii is from California.
I return to this concerto twenty times in the last six months, I'm completely enthralled every time. The greatness of Beethoven, no doubt. But Lang Lang delivers the greatness like no one else. Under his fingers every line tells a different story, every note sings like a bird in flight.
Lang Lang is the most amazing pianist. So musical, expressive, perfect, just perfect. Thank you Lang Lang for your great musical talent. My God, what a pleasure to listen and watch you playing. Bravo!!!!!
There is poetic beauty in the way Lang Lang plays any master piece of music, he adds life & colour; sure the composers must feel happy hearing him play !
Nr. 4 is my favorite Beethoven Piano concert. And Lang Lang performs it beautifully. What a great present for the soul and the mind. Greetings from Santiago, Chile !
I am just expressing my mind to those hurtful, negative criticisms thrown at Lang Lang. Those critics knows they couldn't compete with Lang Lang's competency and brilliant skills especially on connecting with other musician to convey the beautiful notes and expressively display his emotions! Also I observed the most of his Beethoven 's concerto he is paired with equally masterful Christof Eschenbach! Both of them brilliantly bring the Beethoven's concerto to the audience's enjoyment and satisfaction!👍🎹🎶🎵👏👏🎈🎈🎈❤️🇨🇦 So to those who don't like to listen Lang Lang pack up and leave.
Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 expresses human's deep sorrow, agony, and the emotion of victory overcoming it, while No. 4 is very elegant and beautiful as the river flows toward the sea. I can't help but love these two concertos
Through this piece of art, put together by the composer, the pianist, the conductor, and the orchestra, I see divinity of our species, which is not always obvious, especially in a year like the current one (2022).
I don’t know anything negative about LANG LANG, but he doesn’t only plays his music, but he feels every note!! You can be a fly on his fingers and dance at the same time!!!
Beethoven's 4th piano concerto would be #1 favorite piece of music and I doubt if anyone's heard more from a wider variety of genres than I have in 65 years
Just watched this 4th again, I don’t think anyone could possible do this better than Lang Lang, he is virtuosic in every way imaginable, I applaud and like other pianists, but Lang Lang has that certain “something”, he’s still no. 1for me! Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺❤️❤️❤️👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This was the first performance I have ever heard of Lang Lang (been living in Africa for 40 years) I did not know that such perfection, clarity, joy and passion were possible. This is mind-blowing (added to by his obvious love for the music and his craft).
No. 4 is my favourite concerto. I am impressed by Lang Lang's getting better and better over the years, maturing as a person and musician, nurturing his talents. When I first heard Lang Lang - i.e., when he first dazzled the world as a virtuoso, I was more impressed by his virtuosity. Now I listen more to the depth of feeling.
I absolutely adore this piano concerto - the passion that is in it is second to none... Lang Lang plays it to perfection, as does the orchestra... Wonderful...
I haven’t seen negative comments but I have listened to him play and being a piano player myself, he is IMHO probably the very best currently active pianist. He has the POWER, ACCURACY, and musicianship above and beyond his contemporaries! Most of them WISH they could play half as well as he.
"Music must be felt, it penetrates the SOUL and cleans it" PLATO; Lang Lang gives a splendid, complex and uplifting performance, it is enchanting to watch his vibrant technical style. Great orchestra and fabulous director.
Words fail me to express my feelings listening to Lang Lang playing. In any case an enormous joy I rarely feel. Such a wonderful and expressive artist, I am deeply in love with Lang Lang. Thanks for the upload.
This rendition brings tears to my eyes! Beethoven would be proud of this truly great pianist! He brings everything out with such power and emotion. If I didn’t know better I can envision the great Beethoven playing it.
I've listened to this piece for 40 years. I love the Serkin and many others, however, there is a clarity and purpose to this performance that is really stunning. I especially enjoy his lighter touch with the left hand. It's all there....but so delicate. It's all flawless and his joy comes through!!!
I personally would Love to see Lang Lang perform this one or the 4th Concerto with Maestro Chung and the Seoul Philharmonic. Those two are at least as passionate and vibrant performing any of Beethoven's works, and adding Lang Lang (or Yuja Wang, another truly passionate pianist) would be a truly awesome experience.
When i listen to this wonderful concerto No.4, I think it is my favorite but the same happens listening to the 5th. What heaven....what magic ....Lang Lang, Christoph Eschenbach and Beethoven!!!!!! thank you for the happiness you give.
BEETHOVEN your music brings such joy to my heart. I will never tire of listening to your works. NOW with the iPad I have the added experience of seeing the artist, the conductor and the many orchestras around our world. Lang Lang such sensitive playing. and how you were feeling was clearly expressed on your face and in your fingers.CONGRATULATIONS to the Conductor, orchestra and to LANG LANG. Carmel Australia
With no doubt, Mr Lang Lang is an outstanding pianist. He really feels music deeply and his performances are sublime. I definetely enjoy his playing, specially Mozart´s and Beethoven´s piano works. Thanks to GreatPerformers1 for letting us hear this kind of music.
You cannot only listen to Lang Lang without seeing him. Listen and watch Lang Lang is one complete package. He was successfully interpret complex passage into a simple beautiful message that listener can enjoy. That what's Maestro means. Bravo!
To those who say Lang Lang is all show, listen to the slow movement and marvel at the depth of his musical communication with the orchestra and the audience.
Since the first time I saw Lang Lang perform, I was riveted by his passion and sensitive interpretations. It seems as though he almost "becomes" the composer, and brings the depth of each work to reach into our hearts. Thank you for these special performances. Best wishes.
I have listened to this specific piece by Lang Lang for a thousand times, and every time I listen to it, I can't help being attracted by the beauty of this classic work, consisting of Lang Lang's passion, accuracy, emotions, and personal interpretation. AND, he was only 22 years old when he performed this. How incredible he is! You will understand why he is so successful. His fingers have been kissed by God, for sure.
He has been practising piano for hours every day since his childhood. That contributes to him being one of the best pianists in the world. His emotional interpretation is also masterful.
It is delightful to see that there are more than 2 million views for this video after three years. It was so few views three years ago that I couldn't believe why people didn't find this peal of treasure. This is still one of my favourite performances by Lang Lang. I hope I will come again to make some comments after another three years.
As many many times as I heard Maestro Eschenbach and the wonder full Artist Lang Lang together, it is always like a first time magical Concert. What a fantastic match these 2 outstanding Masters are. Both Masters put their Heart and Soul into every note. Thank YOU for letting us enjoy your Music on You Tube. Beethoven has blessed You both many times, I am sure.
Yes, really enjoying Eschenbach and the orchestra’s accompaniment (I know this is 5 years after you posted, but I appreciate your comment even if I’m late to the party :)
Lang Lang is a joy to watch and listen too. The older generation classic piano masters, always looked so damned miserable at being kept alive and awake. At last we have person who shows his is alive while playing.
I would be miserable too...never having any free time, and having to perform like a trained seal, for a bunch of savage, stupid, bipedal apes--masquerading as "aristocrats", wouldn't you?
You're saying that older generation classical pianists looked miserable as they played? I'm too stupefied by this statement to be able to respond to it.
_As a soloist my self, I always loved those moments like @ __14:43__ when I knew that I had completely nailed a passage! The smile on Lang Lang's face is pure musical gold! Talking about split seconds in timing of interpretation to get perfection, I love him!_ 😍

I have heard this concerto many times, but Lang Lang makes each note sing. So much emotion and power combined. Classical music is the only I call music
What I love most of all in his rendition of this piece, beside his emotionality, is the seamlessness of the exchange between piano and orchestra as the piece comes together as magnificent whole.
Merveilleux Lang Lang !
fabulous performance of Beethoven NO.4 by Lang Lang, a true testimony to his genius and virtuosity. Crisp, and masculine melody line, Cleveland under Eshenbach is a wonderful ensemble providing powerful orchestration to the great score. BRAVO !
The Precision with which Maestro Eschenbach Conducts is Fantastic. One can feel the Energy that flows between the Musician and the Conductor, then add Maestro Lang Lang who feels every Note he plays and the warm caring between Lang Lang, Eschenbach and every Musician is a rare most beautiful Magic which makes this Performance absolutely PERFECTION. Thank YOU ALL. for this and Beethovens 5th one of my Dreams come true.
I cant stop myself from crying when I see that Artist's emotions and mastering all those wonderful pieces; I feel the excellency, and also the burden and hard work, even torturing he had to go through to reach such perfection.
Great performers is right! They don't come any better than this remarkable young man. Lang Lang. A true master of the keyboard, able to bring this beautiful composition by the greatest composer of all time, to life. Thank you for sharing this profoundly moving music with us.
The last concerto preformed by Beethoven himself. This is arguably (IMHO, of course) his finest work other than the late quartets. This piece is like a nearly flawless jewel set in the crown of classical music history. If ever there was an deeply convincing argument of Beethoven as a transcendent musical genius, this may be it.
The late piano Sonatas starting at 28 and his last string quartet are Beethoven at his most personal and complex .It takes perspective and lots of listening over the years to realize how otherworldly they are. particularly the final triad which are a transcendent revelation.
I loved this performance by Lang Lang.. the precision, depth and playfulness was a treat. The orchestra was deliciously on point, and winds, notably oboe and bassoon solos, exquisite. Eschenbach’s perfectly incisive direction added stunning clarity and line. Truly epic…❤️
Lee Pilmo I like to listen to him with my eyes closed! The wonderful emotions that he wrings out of this score are then enhanced. I personally find that some of his body language is in fact distracting - but what a mind behind them!
Lang Lang holds hands high playing with his finger tips but with challenging power as needed. He has highly interpretative expression (as Beethoven intended?). This concerto starts with the piano, a nerve wracking few minutes…? This is exquisite music and a great video experience.
Einfach Fabelhaft, Ganz unbeschreiblich. Chrystyne Jackson, Arizona USA
Absolutely first-rate in every level. Eschenbach has been a wonderful influence in Lang Lang. Theirs is a splendid musical partnership. The second movement is an "acid test" of musicality. Only a pianist of the first rank could play it with this degree of prayerful reverence, tender affection and great depth of expression. The last movement is so beautifully played it should be held up as a great lesson to all who are seriously devoted to the piano. It's positively LUMINOUS. Playing of this high a caliber goes far beyond the realm of mere virtuosity; it verges on mystical union with our Creator.
Jeff I second that. It's absolutely stunning the beauty of the human intellect when used to express goodness and understanding. It wouldn't surprise me if a couple comments from above that some mudslinging took hold. But such a breath of fresh air that comment was indeed! Bravo!
Ben Solomon you are SO right. There is no such thing as a "definitive" performance, but this certainly ranks among the very best, and there i wold include Novaes, Serkin, Glenn Gould, Rudolf Buchbinder and Pletnev, and Bruce Hungerford all of whom have achieved great heights with this concerto, but each in his or her own way -- which is as it should be. I would have included Myra Hess, who remains one of my very favorite artists, but her recording of this struck me as a little dry last time I heard it. The awe-inspiring Clara Haskil too was not at her best when her version of Beethoven, Opus 58 was recorded. I haven't yet heard Uchida's 4th, but I'm looking forward to it. There is never any ONE version that extinguishes all the others. That's what keeps it interesting. Young George Li promises MUCH. I hope he records the 4th very soon. Like Lang Lang he too is a marvel.
Increíble música, maravillosas notas del genio Beethoven. Pero también un gran virtuoso del piano Lang Lang ejecuta este concierto con absoluta concentración. Gracias por tanta virtud.

The music really breathes and expresses its true expression through the exact tempo of the music. The expressiveness of this interpretation is based on a millisecond REAL tempo of this divine music.
Young Lang Lang stayed with the musical manuscript instead of infusing his own style. Doing otherwise would not be fitting to the greatest piano concerto. Along with Mitsuko Uchida this was an outstanding performance.
It’s now 2024 and we are blessed to have treasure like this available on RUclips..

I've listened to this piece for 40 years. I love the Serkin and many others, however, there is a clarity and purpose to this performance that is really stunning. I especially enjoy his lighter touch with the left hand. It's all there....but so delicate.
It's all flawless and his joy comes through!!!

Speaks straight to the soul ! Absolutely perfect performance !

Perfect comment!
I am partial to the 5th.
@@jweyek me too! But I like variety too
BEETHOVEN your music brings such joy to my heart.
Beethoven ist einfach der Größte und dann noch gespielt von Lang-Lang ! Vor allem der 2. Satz ist überirdisch schön.
Beethoven ist eine Droge die Leib und Seele nur gut tun kann!
It is a great privilege to know Lang.
He's treating every piece from Beethoven as the master art including "fur Elise".
You cannot only listen to Lang Lang without seeing him. Listen and watch Lang Lang is one complete package. He was successfully interpret complex passage into a simple beautiful message that listener can enjoy. That what's Maestro means. Bravo!
Just wonderful, Lang Lang is using his incredible talent! His performance is a piece of heaven!

To those who say Lang Lang is all show, listen to the slow movement and marvel at the depth of his musical communication with the orchestra and the audience.
Chi dice che LanLang "è tutto spettacolo". Non ama la musica tanto meno la capisce. Dispiace, .. La sue parole.... 🎶🌹🎶
Since the first time I saw Lang Lang perform, I was riveted by his passion and sensitive interpretations. It seems as though he
almost "becomes" the composer, and brings the depth of each work to reach into our hearts. Thank you for these special performances. Best wishes.
Perfettamente 🎶🌹🎶
Yeah, he is a composer and brings the work to another level.
Almost anything by Beethoven brings tears to my eyes
Why?
I have listened to this specific piece by Lang Lang for a thousand times, and every time I listen to it, I can't help being attracted by the beauty of this classic work, consisting of Lang Lang's passion, accuracy, emotions, and personal interpretation. AND, he was only 22 years old when he performed this. How incredible he is! You will understand why he is so successful. His fingers have been kissed by God, for sure.
Just love him! That's all I've to say!
My favorite of Lang Lang's performance, come back again and again to hear him again.
Thank you Lang Lang.
A brilliant musician. It is a pleasure ro listen to his interpretation of Beethoven's piano concert
To me this is Beethoven playing his own music. The second movement is absolutely sublime. Lang Lang you were born to play the masters music.
Великолепный музыкант с настоящей душой, чувствует и способен передать замысел....

郎朗应该是在对音乐的热爱,激情,快乐和自信中成长的。
You're saying that older generation classical pianists looked miserable as they played? I'm too stupefied by this statement to be able to respond to it.
He can put whatever expression he wants into the music because he can hit the notes with so much in reserve. A pleasure to hear.
+Joe Deegan Totally agreed !!!
I want to hear Lang Lang in 2018. Any chance of that happening?
just finished listening to him playing Mozart #24 from 2018 on You-tube. Enjoy!
Sheer poetry!
_As a soloist my self, I always loved those moments like @ __14:43__ when I knew that I had completely nailed a passage! The smile on Lang Lang's face is pure musical gold! Talking about split seconds in timing of interpretation to get perfection, I love him!_ 😍

Yes, EXACTLY!!!
I have heard this concerto many times, but Lang Lang makes each note sing. So much emotion and power combined. Classical music is the only I call music
B.
Esattamente. 🎶fa cantare ogni nota!!! 🎶
Magnifico
What I love most of all in his rendition of this piece, beside his emotionality, is the seamlessness of the exchange between piano and orchestra as the piece comes together as magnificent whole.
Merveilleux Lang Lang ! Quel bonheur de débuter une journée avec cette musique qui vous remue jusqu'au plus profond de votre âme ! Merci aux interprètes .......
Lang Lang is outstanding in his technic, fluency and understanding of the composer he represents.
Maiden's prayer interpreted by Lang Lang is sheer bliss
Lang-Lang génial interprétant un compositeur génial, accompagné par un Eshenbach particulièrement en verve, cela donne un concert prestigieux et mémorable.
fabulous performance of Beethoven NO.4 by Lang Lang, a true testimony to his genius and virtuosity. Crisp, and masculine melody line, Cleveland under Eshenbach is a wonderful ensemble providing powerful orchestration to the great score. BRAVO !
The Precision with which Maestro Eschenbach Conducts is Fantastic. One can feel the Energy that flows between the Musician and the Conductor, then add Maestro Lang Lang who feels every Note he plays and the warm caring between Lang Lang, Eschenbach and every Musician
is a rare most beautiful Magic which makes this Performance absolutely PERFECTION. Thank YOU ALL. for this and Beethovens 5th one of my Dreams come true.
I simply love this one with Lang Lang and Eschenbach and his orchester...PERFECT
WE CAN'T ONLY LISTEN TO LANG LANG, WE ALSO HAVE TO SEE HIM!! IT'S MAGICAL!!
Superb. Lang Lang might just be the perfect person to play this incredible work.
❤ 🙌 Lang Lang is a delight of feelings. I love this concert. This is amazing.

I cant stop myself from crying when I see that Artist's emotions and mastering all those wonderful pieces; I feel the excellency, and also the burden and hard work, even torturing he had to go through to reach such perfection.
christian thioudellet parabens por belíssima performance! Mostra a força do som nos levando ao céu! !!!
It's not glamorous. Beethoven's Dad beat him if he didn't practice--and Lang Lang's likely the same.
A masterful performance of Beethovens 4 Concerto. A real joy to listen too.
His hands are dancing points of light; the real deal... Lang (!)
Great performers is right! They don't come any better than this remarkable young man. Lang Lang. A true master of the keyboard, able to bring this beautiful composition by the greatest composer of all time, to life. Thank you for sharing this profoundly moving music with us.
Oh, my. No words can describe this pianist. Fabulous, tears of joy and respect, gratitude in my eyes. .thanks.
Only I heard this concerto.splendid. Lise.
I advice you to listen to Fur Elise too.
Muzică minunata în interpretare de excepție
Lang Lang is a wounderful pianist and his music is like the clouds...Soft ...sometimes....and bigs another times...I Love him .
Well also the Missa Solemnis, at least this is what he said by himself, that it was the best that he has ever written
Lang Lang is brilliant,I had the privilege to listen to him attending the Toronto Tso
A great pianist playing from a great composer! Bravo, Lang Lang !
Wonderful interpratation great pianist!I l love lang lang!! Verygood
Just watched this again, simply stunning, his ability, feeling, in short complete musician , xx Australia
He is the apt definition of excellent 👍
I loved this performance by Lang Lang.. the precision, depth and playfulness was a treat. The orchestra was deliciously on point, and winds, notably oboe and bassoon solos, exquisite. Eschenbach’s perfectly incisive direction added stunning clarity and line. Truly epic…❤️
I like to watch Lang Lang's facial expressions when he plays. Totally engrossed in his music, he plays some passages with his eyes closed.
Lee Pilmo I like to listen to him with my eyes closed! The wonderful emotions that he wrings out of this score are then enhanced. I personally find that some of his body language is in fact distracting - but what a mind behind them!
You can see how delighted he is to be playing this piece. How lovely is his transparency.
Lang lang plays beautifully, he earned it, and Beethoven, pure genius, the two are matched. Thank you.
Almost beyond compare for the beauty, expression, perfection and elan of this outstanding performance.
His fingers movements are unbelievable!!!
speechless... that was unbelievable
He is beyond technic while building up the unique musical world of his own! Just superb!

Lang Lang holds hands high playing with his finger tips but with challenging power as needed. He has highly interpretative expression (as Beethoven intended?). This concerto starts with the piano, a nerve wracking few minutes…? This is exquisite music and a great video experience.
The Cleveland Orchestra is one of the best in the world!!!
To Hyramess, What first rate comments they are!!I would like to read more accurate and professional comments like these. Thank you very much.
Hyramess Hiramess Very well put. This guy is one in a billion. I'll just add one adjective about the last movement: ELECTRIFYING
You know squat about Ludwig van.
Lang Lang, I love this concert, so much!
And you are wonderful!

Buenísimo !!!
Young Lang Lang stayed with the musical manuscript instead of infusing his own style. Doing otherwise would not be fitting to the greatest piano concerto. Along with Mitsuko Uchida this was an outstanding performance.
Unbelievable!!! ❤
Beethoven will be enjoing with Lang Lang's performance
