For anyone curious about the Sun Wukong / Journey to the West story, Overly Sarcastic Productions has a series of animatic summaries of a decent chunk of them, parodying Dragon Ball in the process.
The Vegeta we see fight in this, is the Vegeta that we know from the series. This seems to be an alternate timeline story, where Planet Vegeta was never destroyed and Prince Vegeta finally became king. The Vegeta we see talking at the start is old King Vegeta, or now Emperor Vegeta.
I'm pretty sure the monkey Super Saiyan transformation was a homage to the legend upon which Son Goku was based: "Son Wukong" , the monkey king. He is an old Chinese legend or tale. This really has won my heart as a die-hard Dragon Ball Z fan, and I think this deserves more recognition, and I REALLY hope Mr. Toriyama has seen this, as I'm SURE he would enjoy this. :)
Son Goku is the japanese name for Sun Wukong of which Akira Toriyama based his main character on very loosely. Wukong was banished from Heaven for mischief caused. He, over his long journey acquired many forms of immortality. The Monkey King is a title he got and was probably Studio Stray Dogs inspiration for Goku's Super Saiyan form. Wukong was also a great sage and fighter which gave way to the titles: "Great Sage, Heaven's Equal" and "The Victorious Fighting Buddha". He was able to share techniques, knowledge, and wisdom with other people of his choosing which is what Goku did with Vegeta with the double Kamehameha they did.
this was a fan made animation taking inspiration from the series among other things so its not a direct one to one with the dragon ball timeline. because in the original dragon ball lore goku was sent to earth because bardock knew of frieza's plan to destroy the planet . so planet vegeta is long gone by this point in dragon ball lore but the fact that it exists in this animation at this point indicates that they don;'t want to rewrite dragon ball lore but just make a parallel timeline kinda like how one timeline trunks returned and killed the androids but got killed by cell.
YES! I've been eagerly waiting your reaction to this animation! Absolutely loved your reaction. I've watched it dozens of times and it still makes me smile in glee like the first time! Is there any way to give you suggestions for things to watch? (like an email or a youtube post or something?). So your comment section doesn't clog up with unrelated comments. P.S.: Krillin had one line at the start (when Chi Chi reminds Goku of his promise). Emperor Vegeta is Vegeta's father and King Vegeta is OUR Vegeta.
Among the several differences between these interpretations of the story, it appears as though they've taken the concept of the Saiyans' Great-Ape transformation and merged it with Super-Saiyan. This new version seems to mix the risks of the former with the benefits of the latter. And they did it in a way that made Goku resemble his concept inspiration even more!
They knew who kakarot was since before day one. He was sent to earth to destroy it and Raditz came when he was an adult to claim the planet and bring him back and when Raditz took too long Vegeta and Nappa came Surprised no one mentioned this but "The Savior from Heaven" is a reference to Sun Wukong, the monkey king who goku and pretty much all of shonen anime is based on. And it's probably studio Naughty Dog because they made Last of Us, Uncharted and the Crash games, Stray Dog is independent and new
After watching this so many times I just noticed Brolys scars slowly change color throughout the fight with Vegeta and Goku and I think that light change might indicate how much time he had left or how hurt he was, the detail in this animation is freaking amazing
reminds me when I found a live action version of Gohan fighting the 2 androids 17 and 18 though speaking of LA I remember Doug Walker doing a Nostalgia Critic video of Dragon Ball Evolution with MasakoX of TeamFourStar and Little Kuriboh
My god, this reminds me of a blend of DC animation and The Boondocks style (The Boondocks is an AMAZING American homage to anime, by the way, a dark comedy with a lot of racial satire and highlighting the utter RIDICULOUSNESS of what racism really is), and this deserves more notice and a bigger production team. This is simply amazing :)
Toriyama scripted Goku's character arc after Journey to the West: The Monkey King, a Chinese novel published in the 16th Century. Son Goku is the actual Japanese translation for Sun Wukong... Sun Wukong is the Monkey King. This was masterfully done... they took Toriyama's story which was based on the character of Sun Wukong... and turned it into a literal translation.
Emperor Vegeta is the one who was holding the crown in the beginning and telling the Vegeta we know (who is now King, instead of Prince) that his kingdom awaits his return. The name Vegeta is like a family inheritance, so Father will name Son the same as him. Kinda like how in olden days here we had multiple kings named Louis and got up to Louis the 14th. So the Vegeta you saw fighting Broly was indeed the Vegeta we know from the Sayian Saga. But a lot less arrogant and thinks more like a true King and Ruler since his planet was never destroyed or subjugated by Frieza.
DAMM!!!!! THAT was AWOSME it was so so blaze 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😎. Glad I subscribed to you're channel Melon I've never this dragon ball parody b4. Kind Regards AuraKnight
My theory is that this in this time line, the Legendary Super Saiyan (the first one from 1000 years before Vegeta and Goku were born) learned to control their power, so the Saiyan race never had to flee their home planet of Sadala. This would also mean that more Saiyans would be able to learn how to master the Super Saiyans form.
Ok so in this timeline the saiyans overthrew Freeza (look at feet of statue at start) meaning planet vegeta was never destroyed and the saiyans replaced Freeza (hence emperor vegeta), (og) broly was never sent away so all saiyans learnt that the super saiyan transformation is real and so inspired and pushed vegeta to train instead of his rivalry with goku. As for the primal light stuff that's up for debate however if you really think about it all we really know about planet vegeta, saiyan culture and society as a whole is very limited so it could be interpreted as another part of original super saiyan legend
Indeed. Almost all we know of Saiyan culture is based on what Vegeta knew as a young child because after the destruction of Planet Vegeta he was raised in the culture of Freeza's empire. Most young children don't really understand the traditions and beliefs of their own culture.
Interpretation based on what we see, most if it is that first scene, first of if you look behind the statue of emperor vegeta (standing on a defeated Freeza) there is 2 buildings in the background, the right having a very Freeza look to it, then the date says AF, if this follows our own date system then AF could be After Freeza Lastly broly being vegeta's inspiration to train is proven in the one line "I've been training my whole life for this moment"
Man Melon that was inspired and really great need to watch this on my own because that was too much and it was cool And man can we take a moment and talk about Chichi going up to Broly of all Dragon Ball z characters kicking him oh Melon the Goku Chichi fight took place during the second world maclel art trnumet so Gohan was not born yet
Dragon Ball takes inspiration from something called Journey To The West. I would assume the Ghost Rider like form they gave Goku here is something the Monkey King used at one point.
Emperor Vegeta(1) is Vegeta(2) dad and in this interpretation Vegeta(2) becomes the new king of Saiyans after Vegeta(1) since all kings are named Vegeta because of the reference to food since every Saiyan name is a nickname or play on words for vegetables aka (vegeta)ble hopefully that makes sense thanks for reading
So the time line is AF 31 - After Freeza 31 years. This was confirmed by the creator. And if you look closely at the statue you can see Emperor Vegeta standing on Freezas body, and that is why he is now the Emperor and Vegeta is the new king of the Sayians. Plus what other people have mentioned about the Son wukong references with him sharing his techniques and powers. Also gokus transformation. This is what dragon ball should have been and this man should be in control of the dragon ball IP this story is so much more interesting. And did my man Vegeta some justice The whole draonball series is inspired by journey to the west and Son wukong. So you just have to look into it a little more. The nimbus, the power pole, being a moneky or having those properties these are all things from son wukong
You seemed surprised by Goku's transformation but it's a total callback to his roots as the Monkey King. Though in this film, I guess Vegeta is the Monkey -King-, you can still see the point.
Gohan wasn’t born yet lol. It’s a what if Frieza didn’t destroy planet vegeta story pretty much. I like this mature version of vegeta better and he’s actually my favorite character of the serious. He seems more royal as he should be. Broly new design is dope btw. The scars give his look more character and when it glows it looks so cool. I wish goku fought longer that went by waaay too fast
Yo this animation is way more fire than DB Super. Why couldn't they have tried as hard with that as these fans did with this? O_o Also it feels like Goku's special power here was inspired by Super Saiyan 4, or inspired by the thing that inspired Super Saiyan 4 to begin with (Sun Wukong in Journey to the West). Not sure. It used his Super Saiyan 3 transformation music though. Very fire.
I actually got goosebumps seeing Goku's transformation because I got the reference. I know it's been pointed out, but I really can't understate how amazing of a design choice this was. The original inspiration for Goku and Dragonball as a whole was Journey to the West; A Chinese novel published in around the 16th century which detailed the adventures of a Monkey King known in as Sun Wukong. The story was so far reaching that he had many names for various languages and dialects. The one we'd be concerned with is the Japanese name for Sun Wukong which is Son Goku. At one point in the story, Sun Wukong was locked in a crucible of divine fire for 49 days. Long story, but he kinda defies the gods at one point... LOL Anyway, he survives by hiding in a corner where the fire was less hot, and emerges from the crucible with the fire having made him stronger. The fire also gives him a new ability; the power to recognize evil with his "huǒyǎn-jīnjīng" which literally translates to 'fiery eyes and golden pupils' But there's a lot of references here that are really astounding. The Golden warriors, the fiery monkey appearance. It's all REALLY cool. I'm glad you reacted to this.
I’ve been watching this, and other reactions, for the past week, and I’m definitely enjoying some of the ideas in the comments. One in particular gave a theory about the Primal Light, and how it ties into one’s mental state. So, Broly is green, because he’s bat💩 insane and/or corrupted by the power. Vegeta has the royal gold for being in perfect control. And Goku, when he goes feral and full of hatred (hey, that bastard Broly DID break his bae’s arm right in front of him), is red, hence the “out of control” line. Certainly an interesting theory, if nothing else, right? Sorry I can’t remember who exactly suggested the idea, but I like it. Now, I have no idea if the Super God Blue will play a role later, but it’s certainly a possibility.
Man, Super Saiyan looks SO much cooler with the tail. There’s not much context, but it seems this iteration of Vegeta already knew Goku, and maybe didn’t even work for Frieza and came to Earth as a villain. It’s even possible that the Saiyan race isn’t even almost extinct yet. Too hard to tell. Anyway, it seems like the SSJ transformation was re imagined so it’s directly linked Oozaru transformation. Goku, as he’s transforming for the first time, takes on a more bestial appearance, while Vegeta is able to tap into the power in a more controlled way. Hence why he said he needed to refine it. I really like it.
The different reasons as to how Vegeta would’ve known who Kakarot/Goku and Broly are would most likely be because they’re from a different timeline and universe where the circumstances of the Saiyans have changed based on the characteristics of what JoJo said above my comment and who they are based on traditionally and culturally.
In my opinion, this Vegeta came fromt he future, and that's why he knows who is Goku and the kamehameha. Probably they met in another timeline when Goku discovered his power too late to win the war, so they use the Dragonballs to send Vegeta back in his younger self to change the future
So my theory on this timeline is that it's the timeline where Bardock became a Super Saiyan and defeated Frieza during the Bardock: Father of Goku special. He would then train other Saiyans to become Super Saiyan and King Vegeta (Formerly Prince Vegeta, the Vegeta we know) was sent to Earth to retrieve Kakarot as, being the Son of Bardock, he'd likely be a strong ally. So my thoughts are that he went to Earth, spent a long time trying to get Goku to return with him and he ended up training alongside him (learning the Kamehameha and also developing his solo version of Vegito's spirit sword) then returned without Goku to become King and relegate his Father to Emperor. Also the form is based on Sun Wukong from Journey to the West and I personally believe Vegeta's telling of the final Super Saiyan that he gave during the Namek Saga in Z, as the Super Saiyan in that story was a half Oozaru who was shrouded in darkness other than his teeth and eyes and surrounded by flame and also was said to have destroyed himself due to not managing to control his power, much like Goku here scarred himself with his transformation and Vegeta said he had to refine his light. Much of that is speculation on my part, but I feel it all makes sense haha
Hadn't seen this yet. Not a fan. Pre-Saiyan Dragon Ball already doesn't get enough love. To begin this short film during Chichi's marriage proposal, at one of the Tenkaichi Budokai tournaments, is a slap in the face to the more grounded, choreographed fighting of the OG story. "Yeah, all that martial arts was cute... how about Broly and Vegeta firing a million energy beams at each other?" It's just stupid. This could have been on Namek or somewhere and it wouldn't have felt as insulting.
The reason apparently of Vegeta knowing the Kamehameha is because, as some told you in the comments, the savior from heaven is a reference to Sun Wukong who was the inspiration for Son Goku. And he have the ability to transmit his capacity to others, that's why, i guess. (And also i think everyone in Dragon Ball can do a Kamehameha at this point lol)

Been trawling the interwebs with pleasure watching reactions to this video, finding PURE FANS and joyful hearts along the way. Naseer's sincerity has become very infectious, and I fully believe that's what Toriyama-sensei intended. (as Toei copyright claims)
Melon, it's a joy to have met you, got a new subscriber, thank you for your vibe and chill, I wish you all the best.
Vegeta's smile at 7:37 is a joy to me. I *LOVE* this Vegeta... not the insecure straggler, but a man who was taught what was most important from the beginning and sought that, BELIEVED in that, and could believe in others on that same level. He knew Kakarot the wayward son on paper for a long time, and had faith in him and their people, even moreso, their mission. The A. F. stands for "After Frieza," so what is the war to come?
*shakes her head smiling* Thank you for your reaction.
@Wren If anything, we should thank you (assuming you were or are a part of the team behind Studio Stray Dog, that is).
What Mr. Pasha and his team created is one in a growing number of examples that showcase a fan's genuine love for something they enjoy.
It's been said that much time, effort, care, and love were put into it. I can see why some would feel that way.
Here's hoping that the team behind this goes on to do so much more. Be it with fan content or any original ideas they may have.
@@KevinKess Oh I'm definitely not, what a dream it'd be to be healthy enough to ... do anything lol, draw again. The thing that is so great about Mr. Pasha's vision is that he somehow KNOWS how much this means to so many of us, and that enthusiasm and passionate joy resonates in his work, speech. I desperately wish the team ALL the success they deserve, and I agree with you fully. Best wishes Kevin, everyone.
Tell Melon for me that her hair is absurdly gorgeous and it's not fair :D :P Thanks again
For anyone curious about the Sun Wukong / Journey to the West story, Overly Sarcastic Productions has a series of animatic summaries of a decent chunk of them, parodying Dragon Ball in the process.

Monkey King.
This was fuckin unbeLIEVABLE. Actually dawg, crazy
I like this dragon ball timeline a lot more ngl.
14:26 you might be thinking about the anime titled "bungo stray dogs"
I had never heard of this fan animation, thank you for showing this to me Melon.
It’s pretty new! I think it came out less than a week ago
this was a fan made animation taking inspiration from the series among other things so its not a direct one to one with the dragon ball timeline. because in the original dragon ball lore goku was sent to earth because bardock knew of frieza's plan to destroy the planet . so planet vegeta is long gone by this point in dragon ball lore but the fact that it exists in this animation at this point indicates that they don;'t want to rewrite dragon ball lore but just make a parallel timeline kinda like how one timeline trunks returned and killed the androids but got killed by cell.
Looks like Brolys been...Disarmed!
Nappa: I get it!
"Final Flaaaaas..."
yeet
THAT was Vegeta. His father is in the beginning holding the crown.
That’s King Vegeta! Not his father
It goes deep the creater said there is time travel involved and vegeta is king vegeta father is emperor vegeta
So happy you reacted to this
They knew who kakarot was since before day one. He was sent to earth to destroy it and Raditz came when he was an adult to claim the planet and bring him back and when Raditz took too long Vegeta and Nappa came
Surprised no one mentioned this but "The Savior from Heaven" is a reference to Sun Wukong, the monkey king who goku and pretty much all of shonen anime is based on. And it's probably studio Naughty Dog because they made Last of Us, Uncharted and the Crash games, Stray Dog is independent and new
I need to get back to making and drawing characters, so I can work for Nasheer. I have found my dream job.
After watching this so many times I just noticed Brolys scars slowly change color throughout the fight with Vegeta and Goku and I think that light change might indicate how much time he had left or how hurt he was, the detail in this animation is freaking amazing
reminds me when I found a live action version of Gohan fighting the 2 androids 17 and 18
though speaking of LA I remember Doug Walker doing a Nostalgia Critic video of Dragon Ball Evolution with MasakoX of TeamFourStar and Little Kuriboh
Cool, I've been waiting for your reaction! I'm glad you liked it.
She needs to do dragonball deliverance
Dad Vegeta is the one with the beard. If Goku and chichi aren't married yet then how can there be a Gohan?
Never even knew of this, that was bloody awesome!
Let's make it Canon xD
Love your reaction to this! ❤ glad you seent it haha
For what I hear from the guy that did all of this this is basically like a time travel type Dragon Ball
Her reaction is priceless lol
Oh there’s also that fan made one with ssj3 vegetable vs broly that’s pretty sick too.
But a lot less arrogant and thinks more like a true King and Ruler since his planet was never destroyed or subjugated by Frieza.
wow, that goku transformation is digging DEEP into dragonball meta lore.
DAMM!!!!! THAT was AWOSME it was so so blaze 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😎. Glad I subscribed to you're channel Melon I've never this dragon ball parody b4.
Kind Regards AuraKnight
in this universe gohan is not even born yet that’s why we need more 🔥🔥🔥
My theory is that this in this time line, the Legendary Super Saiyan (the first one from 1000 years before Vegeta and Goku were born) learned to control their power, so the Saiyan race never had to flee their home planet of Sadala. This would also mean that more Saiyans would be able to learn how to master the Super Saiyans form.
Krillin had one line, shortly before Brolly appeared. Emperor Vegeta had one line I think before that.
Somebody else already said it, but basically "our" Vegeta is king in this short. Imagine if Vegeta's dad took over Frieza's empire.
Is this interpretation or does the original video contain more background info?
Interpretation based on what we see, most if it is that first scene, first of if you look behind the statue of emperor vegeta (standing on a defeated Freeza) there is 2 buildings in the background, the right having a very Freeza look to it, then the date says AF, if this follows our own date system then AF could be After Freeza
Lastly broly being vegeta's inspiration to train is proven in the one line "I've been training my whole life for this moment"
A.F = After frezia
Man Melon that was inspired and really great need to watch this on my own because that was too much and it was cool
And man can we take a moment and talk about Chichi going up to Broly of all Dragon Ball z characters kicking him oh Melon the Goku Chichi fight took place during the second world maclel art trnumet so Gohan was not born yet
The green energy is almost always synonymous with Broly
I'd never seen this fanbase DB inspired anime. That was freaking phenomenal.
It makes more sense when you know the things Akira likes and the things Dragon Ball was inspired from.
This is dope🔥🔥🔥🔥
So the time line is AF 31 - After Freeza 31 years. This was confirmed by the creator. And if you look closely at the statue you can see Emperor Vegeta standing on Freezas body, and that is why he is now the Emperor and Vegeta is the new king of the Sayians.
Plus what other people have mentioned about the Son wukong references with him sharing his techniques and powers. Also gokus transformation.
This is what dragon ball should have been and this man should be in control of the dragon ball IP this story is so much more interesting. And did my man Vegeta some justice
The whole draonball series is inspired by journey to the west and Son wukong. So you just have to look into it a little more. The nimbus, the power pole, being a moneky or having those properties these are all things from son wukong
I cant wait to see trunks with energy swords.
Vegeta knows who he is because gokus older brother, Radits servers under him
You are a very good person with amazing energy. please be happy forever
Oh also, when Bulma catches the cape, One Punch Man is to the left of Yamcha
Glad I found your channel. you got a new sub.
This animation was fantastic and great reaction to it btw if you haven't seen it may I recommend gohanverse by daitomadachi it's a great fan series
Vegeta is at least 5 years older than goku he looks about gohans age and is training under nappa when goku is a newborn baby
It’s like an alternate universe we need more💯😭❤️🔥🐉
Love it!
Awesome
Don’t know about you but I believe Goku just unlocked what I like to call “Primal Beast Super Saiyan”
Is that King Vegeta or Prince Vegeta? Because he showed up looking like Firelord Ozai in the beginning...
When ppl without any dbz knowledge watch legend.
Vegeta already killed frieza. in the beginning of film there is a statue of vegeta if u look closely U'll see he's standing on freiza's neck.
At least with the ages for Goku and Vegeta, Vegeta is at least 5 years or so older than Goku if we go by what we saw in the Bardock movie.
I think you would like Mastarmedia. You should check him out if you like fan made anime
That SSJ Sun Wukong form tho 🔥🔥🔥
Super Saiyan Sun Wukong?!🤣
Yo this animation is way more fire than DB Super. Why couldn't they have tried as hard with that as these fans did with this? O_o
Also it feels like Goku's special power here was inspired by Super Saiyan 4, or inspired by the thing that inspired Super Saiyan 4 to begin with (Sun Wukong in Journey to the West). Not sure. It used his Super Saiyan 3 transformation music though. Very fire.
No Gohan if this happens before Goku and Chi Chi get together
Gohan is not born yet
The fire also gives him a new ability; the power to recognize evil with his "huǒyǎn-jīnjīng" which literally translates to 'fiery eyes and golden pupils'
But there's a lot of references here that are really astounding. The Golden warriors, the fiery monkey appearance. It's all REALLY cool. I'm glad you reacted to this.
LOFL!!! "Is that Vegeta's father?"
That's when you know beyond a factor of a fact, you're dealing with a HARDCORE DBZ "fan"
Anyone else notice gokus wukong form has some inspiration from the red tailed beast mode naruto took whenever kurama took control?
Son Goku = Sun Wukong = Monkey God
emperior vegeta is i think vegeta's father and king vegeta is ...well you know ;]
I’ve been watching this, and other reactions, for the past week, and I’m definitely enjoying some of the ideas in the comments.
Were you in a Harry Mack video? You had the snake named "Noodle"? If not, I'd be surprised.
This one amuses me
In my opinion, this Vegeta came fromt he future, and that's why he knows who is Goku and the kamehameha. Probably they met in another timeline when Goku discovered his power too late to win the war, so they use the Dragonballs to send Vegeta back in his younger self to change the future
can giuoc towN/ i dont see songohan?
Super Saiyan Primal
Goku was inspired by the Monkey King/God, so that’s why he changed in that Ghostrider monkey if I had to guess
King Vegetables I mean Vegeta is named after his dad Vegeta
Hadn't seen this yet. Not a fan. Pre-Saiyan Dragon Ball already doesn't get enough love. To begin this short film during Chichi's marriage proposal, at one of the Tenkaichi Budokai tournaments, is a slap in the face to the more grounded, choreographed fighting of the OG story. "Yeah, all that martial arts was cute... how about Broly and Vegeta firing a million energy beams at each other?" It's just stupid. This could have been on Namek or somewhere and it wouldn't have felt as insulting.
Reboot the series with this honestly it’s better story telling in my opinion
