Just started track again as a junior yesterday, first time trying hurdles i did basic drills and at the end of practice I ran a 50 flat 300m hurdle full hs higher. after not doing track since 7th and in 7th running only distance. Pretty excited to see my time drop like a rock this year with actual practice!
This is my first season coaching middle school and high school track. (Focusing on hurdlers) these videos are a huge help and an easy way to explain to the kids!

hey Jaret I know its late but I just gotta tell you. THANK. YOU. SOOOOO. MUCH!! I ran 36.85 my junior year of high school this year I’m trying to go 35 but my coach just told me start strong stay strong finish strong and at the end of the day it’s only 300 meters.
Thanks for the ideas! I'm an 8th grade boy (this is my first year doing hurtles) my best time is 47:52.Distict is in a week I'm hopefully these will help out.
I ran the 110 and 300 hurdles in high school. High jump and stuff, this is super interesting even if I haven't jumped in over a decade. Thank you for the tips.
I run the 300 hurdles and I have been gradually decreasing my times from the beginning of the season from a 48.22 to what I run now which is a 43.36. To qualify for the whips I need to decrease my time to a 42.6. I feel like I've got a good kick at the end of the race and I'm usually 17 stepping (which is normal for me because I don't have long strides), but I usually need to switch legs at around the 3rd and 4th hurdle which is awkward and even more awkward when your running on the turn. My next meet is a week from today. What can I do to maintain my speed so I can try and go from my good leg each time and maintain my speed around the turn?
+Michael Martini set up the first 4 hurdles in practice and have someone film you and see if you can continue hitting 17 around the curve by picking up the pace a bit. As I mentioned in the video this is very common since the curve will tend to slow you down a little and throw your steps off.
+Dominick Campbell your'e welcome buddy and good luck this weekend! Also, its great to have goals of times you want to run, but be careful about just running for times. Focus more on the competition, running a solid race and trying to win and the times will come much faster and it will be more enjoyable.
+Jaret Campisi well I didn't get my goal, BUT I took second place overall and I ran a 43.43, even though I stutter stepped the first hurdle, so I'm happy with the results overall. I've went from running a 46.4 down to a 43.4 thus far this season.
Jaret Campisi back at it again this year. As a Junior now, I'm a little rusty cuz it's been a while but I plan to improve tremendously this year after ending my first year of this at a 43.43, thanks much for the vid. Re-watching it
loved this video now because of you im actually thinking of getting into more running in general used to do cross country but was about it now thinking of getting into hurdling aswell see how my anaerobic levels can pick up ! haha :)
+Marcoxfitness yeah buddy! running will help give you a unique look to your physique as well so you don't just look like a body builder meat head. Athletes are the ones who get chicks, not big dumb body builders lol
Hey Jaret, great video! I run a sub 40 right now with 17 steps in between. Would it be more beneficial to push and stride for 15 or stay comfortable at 17?
+Derek Buchman Thanks buddy. And it really just depends. As the season progresses and you get in better shape and maybe a little faster, you might want to try taking a few of the early hurdles at 15 and then settle back into your 17 step. Its something you could play around with in practice over the first 3-4 hurdles and see how it goes.
Thanks for this I ran hurdles last year in 7th grade and I came in third in my first race. I'm in 8th grade now and I want to run hurdles this year too but I always get so scared that I'm gonna mess up.
I run 300mh in high school and I'm a sophomore my PR is 53. I really want to make my time around 50 my main problem is stutter stepping before each hurdle and taking off sooner do you have any tips? I really love your videos they help alot
+Flying Madrid yeah that is a very common problem. what you need to look at is your stride pattern. Have someone film you running over the first few hurdles and see why you are stutter stepping...it could be you're in between steps and would come up to an opposite leg if you continued your same pace, so you stutter to hit your good leg. If you adjust your speed by either backing off just a little or picking up the pace a little throughout the course of the entire area between the hurdle then you can get your steps to be on so you hit the hurdle in stride. It just takes practice.
Does this vary for girls? Like should I go for 15 steps or try 17? Or does it depend on what your times are? For reference I’ve done 48.96, but I usually average in the mid 49s to low 50 flats
Hey does anyone have advice for me? I find myself getting a really good start but slow down near the 200 mark, I also feel like I don’t have enough energy to push through so my form goes all out of wack so anyone know what I should do? I run a 50.66 freshman
I love your videos and please I have a major request for you to do a video on how to run the 110 high hurdles faster please tips and tricks too. I'm currently a 17.6 and I need to lower the time to at least a low 16 i be grateful if you make a 110 video please.
I start track in Feb. I do the 400m & 300mH. I want to have a succesful season but i don't know any good workouts lifting & running wise, and im not sure if starting now is too early. Any advice?
I've ran 300h for a little less than a year (I'm a senior, but never really bothered looking into the 300h game plan) I ran a 44 second 400 last year and my 300h time is 48 rn😬. I spend to much time trying to speed up when I land. I lose a lot of momentum
hey jaret I have a bit of a problem with speed between. my typical race plan is to get out decently fast, and then pace between. before I get close to the hurdle, I increase my speed to get on my correct foot. my fastest time in the 300m hurdles is a 44.84c however, I really want to get my time below 40 and I think I need help with either the start or the pace between the hurdles
+John doofus its actually ok to have to speed up a little bit heading into the hurdle. If you don't want to have to do that, then you'll have to push off the hurdle for a few steps in order to make up that ground somewhere else, or just pick up your intensity a little bit overall. Getting faster in the hurdles is just a matter of getting a solid step pattern down so you can hit the hurdles smoothly in order to run your best times.
+Jaret Campisi This is an update. We had a meet this Wednesday and just had one today. On Wednesday I ran a 44.8 is technically a PR for me. Today It was cold and rainy and I was disappointed with myself. I wanted to PR and get a 43 or lower, but I ended up running a 46. So what really got me is that I was going so fast ... UNTIL THE LAST 3 HURDLES on the last straightaway. For some reason, every time i get to the last 3 hurdles, it feels like I cant pick up my legs and end up slowing down a lot. At the pace I was going at today , I know I couldve easily gotten 41 or 40. But its just the straightaway that messes me up for some reason. I really need help because I know I can definetly win regional if i just get to a 41 and can probably win my section in states with a 40 or 39. How can I practice to fix my issue. Many Thanks for all your videos!
+John doofus it sounds like you might be going out too fast then...or you'll have to add a section where you float for a little and conserve some energy so you can come home stronger. Also keep in mind, pretty much everyone gets tired at the end of the race so thats normal to feel pain and be tired. You just have to figure out how hard you can go out and still have enough to finish the race. And don't worry at all about the rain race, cold windy and rainy weather are going to add seconds to your time.
Thanks! Got my season opener tomorrow against a guy who ran my pr from last year in his first race. I've gotten a lot stronger over this off season though just hope I don't stutter.
+Max Z Good luck buddy! Just focus on hitting those hurdles smooth and use the other tips I mention in this video and you'll do great. Let me know how it goes!
+Jaret Campisi it went ok, rest of my teams hurdlers got injured so I was all by myself. Something happened before the first hurdle and I ended up going with weaker leg, so I 16 stepped next 2 but my trail knee clipped the third hurdle causing me to lose my balance and almost fell over, for the rest of the race I just used whatever leg came up but still clipped a hurdle. After all that I got second, ran a pr of 42.44(very surprised), and we won our first meet.
+Max Z haha that sounds like a crazy race. Seems like you ran a good time with plenty of room for improvement. Work on taking that first hurdle with your good leg and then figure out your step pattern in practice so you can hit those hurdles more smoothly and work on that trail leg so you stop clipping them and your times will improve drastically.
pretty cool i went 39.5 at regionals going for 36-37 next race cause it wasnt that hard i ran 38 last year at state for 3rd i want to win this time around. thanks though staying in stride is everything you are correct.
+Gee Star those are some great times man. Good luck to ya! Be careful about running for times...just focus on winning the race and the times will come.
+Jaret Campisi thank you and I will focus on winning that's the best plan to have that's how I usually run but I'm just so nervous about going to college at the best college possible for opportunity education and hurdling wise.
+Gee Star Use that nervous energy to focus and do your best. At the end of the day thats all you can do, so don't stress too much about it. Enjoy the journey because it goes by fast.
Hi, I started running 300 hurdles for the first time ever this year. I haven’t tried starting blocks at a meet yet. What do you recommend I do? I’m afraid I will mess up my steps if I use the blocks.
+DaKingKJ96 Some of them do for sure like the being efficient with your running and not stuttering hurdles and figuring out your race plan. However, there are some pretty major differences which I will go over when I cover the 400 meter hurdles in the future. So stay tuned!
+Rose Drake check out my trail leg video...there are some drills in there that should help for sure. ruclips.net/video/xNzJe7wDDiY/видео.html Also, your trail let is really a function of your lead leg. So if you're not keeping a slight bend in your lead leg and driving it down off the hurdle, it will cause you to hang and pause in the air, which makes it feel very slow and that's not what you want.
idk what to do at this point. I've been trying to incoorporate what you said but for some reason , my times seem to be going up. I haven't been able to beat my 44 pr and my most recent meet I ran a 48. it's not my fitness because I've gotten noticeably faster. and I still have problems with the last 3 hurdles, it seems when i come off the curve, I can't hurdle normally and just and up jumping over them. I honestly hate my situation right now and if I don't fix it up by next saturday( regionals) I won't make it to States
It could be you're training too much. If you're not getting proper rest, hydration and have a solid diet then you will actually get worse. It could also be your race plan and you're going out too hard which is causing you to get tired too soon and ruin the second half of your race. There are a lot of factors involved so without seeing you run or knowing what you're doing it's tough to say.
Hey I have a question my first meet was Tuesday and I did 110 and the 300 hurdles and I fall in both of them and give up the race should I keep doing hurdles
Can’t Stop Me If your still running track you should go out one day and time trail all the running events. The one that you see that your good at the most work on that race and get better for the next season
Hey Jaret, I run the 300 meter hurdles as a freshman in Highschool and wanting to increase my speed for the race. Is there anything that I can do to increase my speed at home? Thanks
+Alexander Ansley why would you not be working out at the track? haha The best thing you could do at home would be like plyos and different types of lunges and body weight squats and stuff like that. My lady actually recorded an at home leg and butt workout that would be perfect for you to do once or twice a week. Just don't do it on top of track stuff if you're already lifting. ruclips.net/video/trqLv9F0NVs/видео.html
+Jaret Campisi haha yeah I workout with the track team basically everyday but my hurdle coach isn't helping a lot with speed and form as much as i need in order to reduce my times. Hopefully i can run my PR this weekend! Thanks man
you guys have to stay more towards the middle of you lane so you don't drag your trail leg around the hurdle instead of over it and get disqualified. I've seen it happen to one of my teammates at NCAA's and it cost him All-American status.
Thanks means allot u replied. I felt I've been at a disadvantage running right leg and I'm running 39 but don't have a coach or much help for the step count but this helps allot thanks
Man in 3 days am running the race and I want some psychological help. I want run sub45 which is the time I have to beat to go to the nationals. I am afraid of the last 100. In practice I'm going 21 in the 150 and 28.5 in the 200 do I have chances?
+trainingattack yeah a lot of people struggle with this...you just have to want to do it. You have to want to push when that pain comes you say "fck it, I know its going to hurt but I want to run a fast time more than I care about the pain." Its something everyone has to deal with regardless of how fast you're running. You just have to accept it and say you're going to fight through it and come out stronger on the other side.
I run the 300 and 110 meter hurdles for my events. I can only 4-Step in the 110 and if like to be able to 3-Step them any tips on how to get better at 3-Stepping?
+blake almon three stepping is based on your speed and strength. The longer your stride and the faster you run the easier it will be. So you need to get stronger in the weight room and faster on the track. Speed training workouts will be great...I've got one on my page if you search for it. I also just recorded a 110 video that will be coming in the next day or so, so stay tuned!
+Jaret Campisi hey jaret, how tall were you in high school. my coach is always telling me I'm too short to run the 110s but my PR in that is 15.88. and great video I hope to beat my 41.2 PR tomorrow
+theanimal292 I was same height as I am now around 5'10". It def helps to be taller for the 110s but I ran 14.2 in the 110s in Highschool and won states so height isn't everything. Maybe he hair means it's not your best event but hats fine. Still fun to do and will help your form in the 300 hurdles as well.
It depends which leg you start forward from your blocks. Whatever leg you start with forward, you steps are even if you jump with the foot you started with forward.
When you have a meet tomorrow and you just tried hurdles for the first time today

Yeah I had a problem with jumping over 300 hurdles at the same height as hurdles for the 110, so I was jumping too high
Keep the videos coming! Always love seeing the perspective of other entrepreneurs 🚀
Thank u bro, brought my time from a 52.7 to a 45.4
Loved this 😩❤️
Thanks for the ideas! I'm an 8th grade boy (this is my first year doing hurtles) my best time is 47:52.Distict is in a week I'm hopefully these will help out.
glad it was helpful keep me posted on how it goes!
Stone Coot that's really good for ur first year. Our best hurdler got 46 seconds (varsity) I'm on jv and got 1 minute lol I sucked😂😂
I ran the 110 and 300 hurdles in high school. High jump and stuff, this is super interesting even if I haven't jumped in over a decade. Thank you for the tips.
Professional thumb wrestler running hurdles
+Jaret Campisi Thank you Jaret! I'll definitely try that tomorrow during practice!
I'm going to try this out. I'm a sophomore and I run a 43.5, I'm going for 42.7 at Wamego this Friday. Thanks for the vid
+Dominick Campbell thats amazing man...3 seconds in a single season is insane man. Great job. Keep up the good work man!
+Jaret Campisi thanks
Jaret Campisi back at it again this year. As a Junior now, I'm a little rusty cuz it's been a while but I plan to improve tremendously this year after ending my first year of this at a 43.43, thanks much for the vid. Re-watching it
Thanks to these video, I PR'ed by 2 seconds by following this video. :)
Great video!!
Your videos are awesome by the way, the motorcycles too
Perfect! Right before district 👌🏽🙌🏽 thanks
+Lauren Laurent haha perfect timing. Good luck! Let me know how it goes :)
loved this video now because of you im actually thinking of getting into more running in general used to do cross country but was about it now thinking of getting into hurdling aswell see how my anaerobic levels can pick up ! haha :)
+Marcoxfitness yeah buddy! running will help give you a unique look to your physique as well so you don't just look like a body builder meat head. Athletes are the ones who get chicks, not big dumb body builders lol
+Jaret Campisi hahahahahahaha your gas buddy well that is the truth tho ! the athletes that actually are athletes are the ones ! :)
Please make a 110 high hurdle video please I need to prepare for my varsity champs next week.
+LivinAloha A few people have been asking for this...I'll try to get one out later this week for you guys. Stay tuned!
+Jaret Campisi Just a suggestion... There are not many "good" videos about how to 3 step or drills for getting it from 4 stepping to 3 stepping.
+xBDBRxKhaos yeah I def agree...others were asking as well so I will be doing a vid on this in the future for sure.
thanks ,really helpfull I have district meet this week
+Abraham Molina Great to hear that and good luck!
You should give a full summer workout for running 400m!!!
That's a great idea actually. I'm thinking I'll do off season workouts when the summer arrives since people have been asking about that as well.
+Jaret Campisi yesss please do that and if possible please make a weekly schedule for 400m runners 🙈
Thanks for this I ran hurdles last year in 7th grade and I came in third in my first race. I'm in 8th grade now and I want to run hurdles this year too but I always get so scared that I'm gonna mess up.
Can you make a video on how to run a 300m race. Explaining all the phases of it.
When you’re only super fast in 100m and your coach throws you in 300m hurdles
Right.. I keep on stutter stepping
It just takes practice.
every time I run a 300 hurdle I question why I run track
My second time of running 300mh and my time was 45.03 hoping to break 40 barrier
I will try this technique.
Does this vary for girls? Like should I go for 15 steps or try 17? Or does it depend on what your times are? For reference I’ve done 48.96, but I usually average in the mid 49s to low 50 flats
Well I have sub-districts Friday so I'm gonna try my best to use your tips
+MrStAttastical sounds good man. Good luck! Let me know how it goes :)
J camp, how would I ran a 300m race like flat out.
Me: running a 45
Also me: wanting to run under 45
Jaret Campisi what was your Personal Best in high school and what time did it take to make it to State.
as a freshman i got a 46.55 at my last meet next is regionals and i wanna run faster
I got first place thank you for the help 🥇
Hey does anyone have advice for me? I find myself getting a really good start but slow down near the 200 mark, I also feel like I don’t have enough energy to push through so my form goes all out of wack so anyone know what I should do? I run a 50.66 freshman
Hey I've ran on that track before. Isnt that SBCC?
Awesome video! I got a 400 meter hurdle race tomorrow!
+MiniBike Mayhem ahhh yeah good luck man! I'll be doing a 400 meter hurdle video soon. So stay tuned for that!
I ran 38.4...just ran like hell.
I love your videos and please I have a major request for you to do a video on how to run the 110 high hurdles faster please tips and tricks too. I'm currently a 17.6 and I need to lower the time to at least a low 16 i be grateful if you make a 110 video please.
Yes I need a 110 video too, there's barely any of them out there.
Tip: get out of of the blocks fast, 3 step in between all of them and don't slow down
+AllforthingsGreat 9 Others have been asking so I will try and get a video out for you this week. Stay tuned!
+Jaret Campisi Yes! Please as soon as possible, if you can ur the best
This actually helped me out a lot my p.r. Dropped to 46 seconds (:
+TheFunnyGuy Love to hear that! I've got lots more coming so if you have specific questions let me know!
Trying to get better than 58 I know it sucks but it’s my first season doing 300 m hurdles
So do you count your steps in your head while running or you watch yourself in a video??
Both tbh
I start track in Feb. I do the 400m & 300mH. I want to have a succesful season but i don't know any good workouts lifting & running wise, and im not sure if starting now is too early. Any advice?
Harmstrings flexibility stretches for hurdling ?
The dude that went to my school is number 1 fastest in pa his name is Eric futch he ran 36.43
Hope this vid helps. I really want to drop from 44,5s to something like 42s. Wish me luck
how did it go
@@kalix803 It went well. Onmy last meeting I ran 42.65 and it was 1 month ago so propably now I'm even faster because I train almost every day
Pov: you have to get locked in for districts next week and don't know what your doing
Jaret Campisi thanks bro
Jaret Campisi thanks again
are you counting steps to the first hurdle or just after the first
Would the same concepts apply to 400 hurdles?
+DaKingKJ96 Some of them do for sure like the being efficient with your running and not stuttering hurdles and figuring out your race plan. However, there are some pretty major differences which I will go over when I cover the 400 meter hurdles in the future. So stay tuned!
where are the markers for 300 hurdles?
I always keep hitting the hurdle with my trial leg knee and it feels like it's going so slow over the hurdle
+Jaret Campisi ok
idk what to do at this point.
Is 48.90 seconds good for a 8th grader on there first time doing 300m boys varsity hurdles
Thanks man
my first race i ran a 47, and now im hitting 45. I am trying go reach 42 seconds by next week
Got a meet Tuesday
I run a 41.09 and I’m going to improve my step pattern and finishing stronger to reach a 39.00
What about right leg hurdlers on the curve
you guys have to stay more towards the middle of you lane so you don't
drag your trail leg around the hurdle instead of over it and get
disqualified. I've seen it happen to one of my teammates at NCAA's and
it cost him All-American status.
Thanks means allot u replied. I felt I've been at a disadvantage running right leg and I'm running 39 but don't have a coach or much help for the step count but this helps allot thanks
Cumberland Valley 🔥
Man in 3 days am running the race and I want some psychological help. I want run sub45 which is the time I have to beat to go to the nationals. I am afraid of the last 100. In practice I'm going 21 in the 150 and 28.5 in the 200 do I have chances?
advice on getting the right mindset when sprinting the 300? by the time i hit the 150 i really dont want to speed up but I know I have it in me.
+Jaret Campisi thanks for the advice ill put it to use tomorrow when i run the 300, trying to break 50sec lol
I also just recorded a 110 video that will be coming in the next day or so, so stay tuned!
thank you!!!
+theanimal292 You're welcome, hope this was helpful for you!
+Jaret Campisi hey jaret, how tall were you in high school. my coach is always telling me I'm too short to run the 110s but my PR in that is 15.88. and great video I hope to beat my 41.2 PR tomorrow
+theanimal292 your coach is a jerk you can set your mind to anything you believe in.
+theanimal292 I was same height as I am now around 5'10". It def helps to be taller for the 110s but I ran 14.2 in the 110s in Highschool and won states so height isn't everything. Maybe he hair means it's not your best event but hats fine. Still fun to do and will help your form in the 300 hurdles as well.
since it’s an odd number for the left lead leg, would it be an even number for the right?
It depends which leg you start forward from your blocks. Whatever leg you start with forward, you steps are even if you jump with the foot you started with forward.
Isaiah Taylor on the block my right foot is in the back and my lead leg is my right leg
