I'm an old guy who just started RC flying 4 years ago. I can totally relate to the emotions and mindset expressed in this video. There are some days I feel comfortable in the sky and others...not so much. Those "not so much" days are hard...you still want (need) to fly, but it feels risky. I find that trepidation is hard to work thru as an RC pilot. Throttle management at landings has been my biggest struggle, just when I think I have it...I get a scare. Warbirds are the hardest for me.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. Warbirds are very very cool, but they are the hardest to fly! Would recommend using a gyro like AS3X or Aura. It does help a lot, especially in planes that are inherently unstable. Keep at it!!

Hey Mark, that hurts! Man I feel your pain! Don’t ask me how I know! I will upload my crash this weekend. Anyway, I am going to teach you something. I heard you say you were committed to the landing. Here’s what I say; Never commit to landing. When attempting to land, make your first commitment to going around first. In this example, as soon as it got funny on top of that tree, that would have been my trigger to go around, because I had already been committed to going around in the brain for every landing. I hope that makes sense. I hope it helps. Always knowing that you will go around as your first option on your approach, will keep you on your toes. Only land if that approach was perfect because you didn’t need to go around. I hope this helps! Hope to meet you guys at the field this season. Safe and happy flying! Go Around first! 👍🏼
Good advice Lou! When I said I was committed it meant that I was all the way back to idle. I usually don’t bring it back to idle until I’m committed because it takes so long to spool up. Because of those trees so close to the approach end I need to come to idle base to final. What I think happened was I got scared when I thought I was going to hit the tree and instinctively pulled back on the stick which I think pushed me into an accelerated stall and I rode that all the way down and punched the throttle. I was probably about 1 sec away from producing usable thrust before I hit because you can hear the thrust come up right at touchdown. I like your approach though, and absolutely agree with you! I just think that field is slightly too small for turbines. Thank you very much for the advise, truly appreciate it! Hope to see you this season.
I hope the engine is okay. The airframe’s easily repaired and recovered but the crash was fair and square and could have happened to anyone, even the most experienced pilots. Thank you for posting the failures (if that’s what we’re gunna call it) as it allows others to learn from it too. 😊❤👍

Using a gyro is like driving an automatic transmission car with lane assist and adaptive cruise control. Some people like shifting gears on a race track.
Not entirely, we disagree on that. It does depend on what type of programming you’re talking about. Beginner planes have assisted gyros that help you maintain attitude control, but at this level the gyro helps reduce wind input but does not restrict control in any way. Properly tuned they can really make the flight enjoyable.

Sorry Mark! Your analysis is correct about what happened! Don't give up on the jets! Energy discipline is key and you already know that! Taking one element out of the equation, don't know a lot about your home field but maybe look at accomplishing the maiden at a field with no obstructions at either end! With a jet it's one less issue to deal with! Good luck with the repair or replacement and hope to see you guys at Nall!

Mark, if it makes you feel better bud, I destroyed my first jet on flight Number two, partially my fault, partially poor model choice. I throttled back too soon after take off and stalled it resulting in a total write off. It happens mate, don’t let it deter you.
Thanks for that! I have about 100 successful flights on the Ranger, but still feel as if Im learning at a steep curve. I may have had too much flaps in on this maiden. I have been slowly adding more flaps due to my small airfield, and think I added about 5 degrees more on this build without testing. Once I saw the tree, and overreacted, it was all over! I truly appreciate the comment, especially from someone who actually flys jets, and understands them. Thanks for taking the time to reply, and brighten my day.
I’ll half to double check but I beleive 15/30deg. I set up 45deg on this last build and I think it was too much. I think it was part of my problem that I didn’t compensate for the additional flaps and still brought it back to idle on landing and stalled.
Thanks for the quick reply! Your setup is a little different from the manual and what others are showing. Others show 20 to 30 degrees for TO flaps and 55 to 84 degrees for landing flaps. They suggest it is needed or the Ranger will not slow down for landing. Did you have any trouble slowing it down at only 30 degrees for landing? Thanks again for your help!@@hobbyxtremerc

No the blame is all mine!! My depth presumption was off and I thought I was in front of those trees. Not the best field for jets, but I’ve flown it there so much I got too comfortable and let my guard down. Yup, this will be number three!
Sorry to see this, I can feel it hurts…I only built one plane in my whole life and after crashing it due to bad battery connection , I promised myself not to build anymore.. and till this day , I only fly ARFs and ready to fly ones. So when crash happens it’s just money wasted and not my valuable time.
It was fine after the tree, but I get how it could throw you off. I crashed an EDF because the canopy flew out and I tried to land it too quickly to see where the canopy was going.
Thanks for the comment. I think when I saw the tree I yanked on the elevator which forced a stall, and was stalled the whole way down, or at the very least right on the edge. I was throttling up, but did not have enough time to spin up the turbine. I’ll be thinking about this was for awhile.
@@hobbyxtremerc that's the scary part about getting into turbines, I'm 7 months into the hobby and have many EDFs of all sizes and I'm ready, but it's thousands compared to hundreds when shit happens lol. That new Raptor from Banana Hobby looks very tempting though!

We've all been there. I had a beautiful, one of a kind Beechcraft KingAir B200 and after doing all the ground checks; I taxi into position and just after rotation, I P-Factored the airplane into the ground. All because I failed to torque a prop on properly. Multi thousand dollar project gone in an instant. The guy was nice enough to give me another mold, but I just haven't had the stamina to go back and build it with the same fervor as I did before.
We understand!!! But we all have been there, what’s important is to keep trying. Get that King Air built! That’s an awesome idea for a model. Thanks for commenting!
That hurts Mark and too bad about all the work that went into that beautifull plane. We have all been there and crashing is a part of the hobby, but i understand your feelling. I am so sorry, you all are such good pilots! I have only been flying for 4 months and it hurts me so bad when I crash my $300 styrofoam plane. I can’t even imagine how bummed you are! Thanks for showing the crash though, it makes me realize even the pro pilots make a mistake at one point in their life.
Everyone makes mistakes! No matter what level you’re at. We could stop crashing if we got boring and just flew in patterns. Dont stop trying to achieve the next level, it’s what makes this hobby exhilarating! Try not to sweat the small stuff, and keep getting back on the horse. This crash was due to the exactly the same stall encounter as the last crash. Two strikes. The plane already stalled well before it skirted the tree. Its high sink rate and rocking wing was the evidence. You should have opened the throttle and try go around. Instead you decided to pull the nose up and things got even worse. BTW I have done gain tuning on KingTech turbine and some careful tuning will let you have very fast throttle response and not feel like you have to wait for "spooling". You have seen turbines jets do nose up hovering and this can only be done through fast throttle control. Next time, try flying at mid/low throttle and get a good feel for how the aircraft responds. Do continuous track patterns and rehearse the landing approach and find out what the appropriate throttle input, bank angle, approach angle, forward speed, and descend rate should be. Keep the throttle control busy! You might want to turn off the video and focus on flying. Minimize the distraction and stay focused. Regards.
That is a tough field to fly jets at it appears, it is so tough to avoid trees without a large increase is airspeed by pointing the nose down after clearing then going off the end of the runway, I would avoid jets at that place. But my field is at a landfill and I am spoiled.
Yes and no, many have flown jets here to include me….but the trees at that end do pose a challenge. On the other side of the field it’s corn, so running long would also be a problem. I’ve flown about 60 flights here though so challenges aside, I just messed up and my depth perception was off.;-)
40 years experience! im 35rc and 30 full scale. Your beech 18 flight you seemed behind the aircraft and unstable.....slow your pace and your hot dogging a bit is all I can recommend at your experience level. You dumped your flaps straight to full without testing stability and trim prior during the jet debacle...you planned to stay at a reduced throttle and deviated from that...all downhill from there...best of luck.
yeah, he's newer than I am and still scared of them slightly.....probably because I keep crashing them! No doubt hes better on the sticks though, he actually maidens most our new aircraft.

Couch or not, you’re right! I think I got into an accelerated stall when I yanked the elevator after hitting the tree. At that point I dumped all energy and the model was super slushy in the controls forcing me to over control. Many lessons learned from this.
yeah the near miss on the tree and then the peanut gallery commentary is not good for maintaining calm... sorry for the crash i know alot of time and effort went into the build.
Nothing can prepare you for a turbine. EDF’s are NOT the same. Wing loading is very high, thrust is very delayed, and stall is always deep. We appreciate your comment and thank you for watching!
Sorry about that outcome, just remember that no one is the best. It’s a constant learning process and throw panic into a reaction and the what to do’s get completely fogged over in the brain. Anytime I see someone who thinks they are the best I laugh.
So i started with a BVM Ultra Bandit. Not what most would recommend as first turbine. I have around 28 flights and still trying to get nicer landings. Purchased a CARF J10 last year and really like it. Totally different flying characteristics than Bandit. It will land very slow high alpha configuration. Doesn't stall very easy and vector thrust is so cool.
40 years.....? That's the problem ! You couldn't pass the Physical ! 😂🤣😂 Sorry for the loss ! I know it's unnerving flying conventional slow planes, and that's bad enough ! But the expense that comes with Jets is insane, at least to me ! That tree is unfortunate ! Couldn't tell if there was something induced by the placement of the tree, or you over controlled it, and not enough altitude to save it ! But we all know $ _ _ t happens ! Thanks for showing we're all human ! Once the emotional damage heals, this'll be one of those, " Remember when ? " things, and will likely brings some laughs ! You know what they say, " Any landing you can walk away from, is a good landing " ! 👍😉
Stall. Once the jet went below the tree line, that affected your depth perception, I was flying at a new field this summer that had a tree line on approach, I did not like that, I had to be on my toes each landing from the tree end. Also an airforce saying my late flying pass shared "better to be long at 10 then short at 100", you were short at 100. I try to touch down directly across from me, even it mean moving from the pilot stations to a spot on the field for landing that helps me, especially for maidens. Rebuild and try again, you almost had it. good luck.
I think depth perception had a lot to do with it absolutely. I did not know I was behind the tree line on approach, and spooked when I realized I tipped that tree.
I see you point, but Gyros actually make it more scale. Models are light, and they get pushed around in wind that full scale would not. Using a professional gyro setup makes the flying more scale, and thus why we use them.
All due respect sir, however, after 48 years of flying models since the age of 8, you’re flying advanced models when more practice is needed with an intermediate level low wing trainer. I was CFI of one of the states of Australia for a decade btw and helped guide approximately 150 students of all ages to a safe solo standard. Not trying to be rude. 😊😊

It makes me sick when this happen, A lot of my friend fly them one crashed two in one day and had a nervous breakdown. He been away now for about 8 to 10 years and won't come back even with little crap .I really don't like what these planes do to these people. This guy was a good person until he got into Turbines .
It really is another level, and the cost is a lot. The problem with turbines is that you can’t learn them with anything else. EDF’s are not even close to the weight and difference in thrust, so I’m on a bit of a learning curve currently. It’s important to get back in the air, and as the video says…..try to keep smiling! Crashes hurt, but unfortunately they will always occur…..eventually.
Ow man, that's really hard. I remember being very upset about crashing my 75 euro (2nd hand) low wing trainer, took me weeks to repair but still flying it today.
Just one comment about the camera - always check and clean your lens. You have some pretty big goobers on it, and it is a bit distracting while watching the video. It could be the camera back that has dirt on it if it is a digital camera so it's not for sure the lens.
I totally agree I’ve been trying to do better with cleaning my lens but I think I have a scratch or something on my lens that constantly keeps showing up when I am editing I am learning a lot and try to do better for future videos. Thank you so much for commenting we will do better.
Its always difficult when it happens but we've all done it, and for the people that don't fly turbines they are a totally different animal to land. you cant just punch it and going around like propeller planes
So sorry, it really stinks. i have two jets and both have had mishaps. I was able to repair both but took a while. I have been flying for about 35 years and started with turbines two years ago. Don't quite, you will rebound.
We’re getting better, but in order for us to grab more content we have to use a lot of iPhone video as well as our dLSR. It makes for spotty video sometimes.

Can’t land a foamy with flaps, can’t trim your own plane? I’m not really surprised at the end result but your summonses was correct. Don’t get out of jets though.
If your setup costs more than 1k(unless it's a 3d airframe) a gyro is a must.....cortex was made for a reason and so was smoothflught from ar. Turbine setups deserve it even if it's tuned way down....it helps protect yiur investment..... try a 2 m setup like a viper they fly really well the ranger can get a little hairy but it is a smaller jet and can have a violent stall and bit you quick
I appreciate your comment, I have been flying EDF for along time…..it NOT the same by a long shot. The weight of a true turbine is way heavier and thus the wing loading is very high. EDFs can recover from stalled situations almost instantly, whereas turbines need a lot of altitude and aggressive changes to regain airspeed.
That sucks. Did you just miss the opening between the trees that was lower? Vertical speed increased when you came down from that tall tree and AOA was probably huge. . Your view angle at that moment wasn't great for visually estimating the AOA. So you are flying for your life at the worst possible moment, power off, poor visuals. It seemed once on that final descent you never had a chance, although the plane almost seemed to stabilize for a second.
Buddy-. Great videos- tell everyone to shut the fuck up everytime your landing!! Nobody likes a know-it-all when your flying and trying to land!! The Monday morning quarterbacks on what you should have done. Your a good pilot just fly and have fun, there’s 5 different people trying to tell you how to land and what to do as your coming in and trying to fly. Keep up the cool videos!!

We were able to collect some good data from the crash, we had an onboard pitot system and GPS with telemetry, so we have a good idea of how to prevent in the future. Thanks for watching!

Use flight modes on the flaps, then you dont have to do the guessing game on the D18, On the jet, you got too slow and snapped it.
Agreed, we have adapted to the D18 and it’s flying well. As for the jet, no way around it….your right!

Thanks for the comment. I think when I saw the tree I yanked on the elevator which forced a stall, and was stalled the whole way down, or at the very least right on the edge. I was throttling up, but did not have enough time to spin up the turbine. I’ll be thinking about this was for awhile.
@@hobbyxtremerc that's the scary part about getting into turbines, I'm 7 months into the hobby and have many EDFs of all sizes and I'm ready, but it's thousands compared to hundreds when shit happens lol. That new Raptor from Banana Hobby looks very tempting though!
The Ranger is a perfect first turbine. It does have a fairly high wing loading, but once you start adding that kind of weight, they all

We've all been there. I had a beautiful, one of a kind Beechcraft KingAir B200 and after doing all the ground checks; I taxi into position and just after rotation, I P-Factored the airplane into the ground. All because I failed to torque a prop on properly. Multi thousand dollar project gone in an instant. The guy was nice enough to give me another mold, but I just haven't had the stamina to go back and build it with the same fervor as I did before.

That hurts Mark and too bad about all the work that went into that beautifull plane. We have all been there and crashing is a part of the hobby, but i understand your feelling. I am so sorry, you all are such good pilots! I have only been flying for 4 months and it hurts me so bad when I crash my $300 styrofoam plane. I can’t even imagine how bummed you are! Thanks for showing the crash though, it makes me realize even the pro pilots make a mistake at one point in their life.
Everyone makes mistakes! No matter what level you’re at. We could stop crashing if we got boring and just flew in patterns. Dont stop trying to achieve the next level, it’s what makes this hobby exhilarating! Try not to sweat the small stuff, and keep getting back on the horse. This crash was due to the exactly the same stall encounter as the last crash. Two strikes. The plane already stalled well before it skirted the tree. Its high sink rate and rocking wing was the evidence. You should have opened the throttle and try go around. Instead you decided to pull the nose up and things got even worse. BTW I have done gain tuning on KingTech turbine and some careful tuning will let you have very fast throttle response and not feel like you have to wait for "spooling". You have seen turbines jets do nose up hovering and this can only be done through fast throttle control. Next time, try flying at mid/low throttle and get a good feel for how the aircraft responds. Do continuous track patterns and rehearse the landing approach and find out what the appropriate throttle input, bank angle, approach angle, forward speed, and descend rate should be. Keep the throttle control busy! You might want to turn off the video and focus on flying. Minimize the distraction and stay focused. Regards.

That is a tough field to fly jets at it appears, it is so tough to avoid trees without a large increase is airspeed by pointing the nose down after clearing then going off the end of the runway, I would avoid jets at that place. But my field is at a landfill and I am spoiled.
Yes and no, many have flown jets here to include me….but the trees at that end do pose a challenge. On the other side of the field it’s corn, so running long would also be a problem. I’ve flown about 60 flights here though so challenges aside, I just messed up and my depth perception was off.;-)

40 years experience! im 35rc and 30 full scale. Your beech 18 flight you seemed behind the aircraft and unstable.....slow your pace and your hot dogging a bit is all I can recommend at your experience level. You dumped your flaps straight to full without testing stability and trim prior during the jet debacle...you planned to stay at a reduced throttle and deviated from that...all downhill from there...best of luck.

yeah, he's newer than I am and still scared of them slightly.....probably because I keep crashing them! No doubt hes better on the sticks though, he actually maidens most our new aircraft.

Couch or not, you’re right! I think I got into an accelerated stall when I yanked the elevator after hitting the tree. At that point I dumped all energy and the model was super slushy in the controls forcing me to over control. Many lessons learned from this.
yeah the near miss on the tree and then the peanut gallery commentary is not good for maintaining calm... sorry for the crash i know alot of time and effort went into the build.

Nothing can prepare you for a turbine. EDF’s are NOT the same. Wing loading is very high, thrust is very delayed, and stall is always deep. We appreciate your comment and thank you for watching!
Sorry about that outcome, just remember that no one is the best. It’s a constant learning process and throw panic into a reaction and the what to do’s get completely fogged over in the brain. Anytime I see someone who thinks they are the best I laugh.

So i started with a BVM Ultra Bandit. Not what most would recommend as first turbine. I have around 28 flights and still trying to get nicer landings. Purchased a CARF J10 last year and really like it. Totally different flying characteristics than Bandit. It will land very slow high alpha configuration. Doesn't stall very easy and vector thrust is so cool.
What size turbine do you have in your J10? I love the thought of being able to high alpha!

Stall. Once the jet went below the tree line, that affected your depth perception, I was flying at a new field this summer that had a tree line on approach, I did not like that, I had to be on my toes each landing from the tree end. Also an airforce saying my late flying pass shared "better to be long at 10 then short at 100", you were short at 100. I try to touch down directly across from me, even it mean moving from the pilot stations to a spot on the field for landing that helps me, especially for maidens. Rebuild and try again, you almost had it. good luck.
I think depth perception had a lot to do with it absolutely. I did not know I was behind the tree line on approach, and spooked when I realized I tipped that tree.
It's more 'scale' this way.
I see you point, but Gyros actually make it more scale. Models are light, and they get pushed around in wind that full scale would not. Using a professional gyro setup makes the flying more scale, and thus why we use them.
All due respect sir, however, after 48 years of flying models since the age of 8, you’re flying advanced models when more practice is needed with an intermediate level low wing trainer.
I was CFI of one of the states of Australia for a decade btw and helped guide approximately 150 students of all ages to a safe solo standard.

It makes me sick when this happen, A lot of my friend fly them one crashed two in one day and had a nervous breakdown. He been away now for about 8 to 10 years and won't come back even with little crap .I really don't like what these planes do to these people. This guy was a good person until he got into Turbines .
It really is another level, and the cost is a lot. The problem with turbines is that you can’t learn them with anything else. EDF’s are not even close to the weight and difference in thrust, so I’m on a bit of a learning curve currently. It’s important to get back in the air, and as the video says…..try to keep smiling! Crashes hurt, but unfortunately they will always occur…..eventually.
Ow man, that's really hard. I remember being very upset about crashing my 75 euro (2nd hand) low wing trainer, took me weeks to repair but still flying it today.

Just one comment about the camera - always check and clean your lens. You have some pretty big goobers on it, and it is a bit distracting while watching the video. It could be the camera back that has dirt on it if it is a digital camera so it's not for sure the lens.
I totally agree I’ve been trying to do better with cleaning my lens but I think I have a scratch or something on my lens that constantly keeps showing up when I am editing I am learning a lot and try to do better for future videos. Thank you so much for commenting we will do better.
Its always difficult when it happens but we've all done it, and for the people that don't fly turbines they are a totally different animal to land. you cant just punch it and going around like propeller planes

So sorry, it really stinks. i have two jets and both have had mishaps. I was able to repair both but took a while. I have been flying for about 35 years and started with turbines two years ago. Don't quite, you will rebound.

If your setup costs more than 1k(unless it's a 3d airframe) a gyro is a must.....cortex was made for a reason and so was smoothflught from ar. Turbine setups deserve it even if it's tuned way down....it helps protect yiur investment..... try a 2 m setup like a viper they fly really well the ranger can get a little hairy but it is a smaller jet and can have a violent stall and bit you quick

Turbines are not fir everyone ayou do not look as though you have enough time in .think about edf before you make that jump .
I appreciate your comment, I have been flying EDF for along time…..it NOT the same by a long shot. The weight of a true turbine is way heavier and thus the wing loading is very high. EDFs can recover from stalled situations almost instantly, whereas turbines need a lot of altitude and aggressive changes to regain airspeed.
That sucks. Did you just miss the opening between the trees that was lower? Vertical speed increased when you came down from that tall tree and AOA was probably huge. . Your view angle at that moment wasn't great for visually estimating the AOA. So you are flying for your life at the worst possible moment, power off, poor visuals. It seemed once on that final descent you never had a chance, although the plane almost seemed to stabilize for a second.

Buddy-. Great videos- tell everyone to shut the fuck up everytime your landing!! Nobody likes a know-it-all when your flying and trying to land!! The Monday morning quarterbacks on what you should have done. Your a good pilot just fly and have fun, there’s 5 different people trying to tell you how to land and what to do as your coming in and trying to fly. Keep up the cool videos!!
