Queensbridge: The Other Side

  • The film Queensbridge: "The Other Side" highlights the other side of a misrepresented and misunderstood community by showing that most people who live in the projects are hard working, law abiding families keeping their children off the streets and in schools and making a significant contributions to society. These are communities that are capable of producing a judge or a junkie, a politician or a pimp, a hood or a Harvard Graduate -either of which can be seen walking through the courtyard wearing a hoodie on a crisp fall day.

    The documentary aims to heighten public awareness about "The Projects" and to show that public housing is a positive, viable and necessary housing alternative. The story of Queensbridge: The Other Side is told through the eyes and experiences of those who know it best, the men, women and children of "the projects".

    As we all know shelter is becoming a critical challenge for middle class and poor New Yorkers who cannot afford the luxury housing that is abundantly available for the wealthy. One important component of the New Deal was the creation of public housing stock for the middle class and poor. These housing developments were and still are called, "The Projects". The intent was to provide a decent, clean, safe and affordable living environment for its residents. During the 1960's-80's, the conditions in these housing developments deteriorated as middle or working class whites migrated out, leaving behind working class and under employed minorities. As a result of the influx of underserved and socio-economic disadvantaged African-American and other minorities, a stigma was cast on the inhabitants of "the projects". Drugs became more prevalent and crime rose; more people became dependant on the welfare system; and families were decimated due to the introduction of crack-cocaine. As a result, the people who live in public housing are usually perceived to be drug- dealers, crack heads, criminals and dysfunctional people who are a liability to society. This stereotyping makes it easier to turn a blind eye and deaf ear to the fact that most project inhabitants are employed fathers and mothers struggling against all odds to make ends meet and educate their children. This stereotyping makes it more comfortable for those in position to effect change to focus instead on self empowerment.

    Selena Blake, the Producer/ Director/Creator and Writer of the documentary "Queensbridge: The Other Side," was born in Kingston, Jamaica. She grew up in a very strict household in Old Harbor St. Catherine, the youngest of 6 daughters of Linneth and Kenneth Blake. Selena moved to Queensbridge in 1987. Although not immediately enamored with "the Bridge", she grew to love her new home, primarily because of the generosity of her neighbors. After her son Daniel graduated from High School in 2004, Selena decided to broaden her horizons and open a production company. While filming various productions, she realized it was the support of her Queensbridge community that enabled her to meet the challenges of being a full-time working mother. Thus the documentary entitled "Queensbridge: The Other Side" was born.

    I grew up in Queensbridge - I lived at 41-17 Vernon Blvd. My mother lived here and raised her grand children here and my kids came every summer. I don't have any bad memories of Queens Bridge - no more than I have where I live now. Media keeps up the hype. It's the choices you make that says the kind of life your going to have. I have seen people come from bad neighborhoods and do very well in life - WHY - GOOD DECISIONS AND GOOD CHOICES.

    I worked on this project for two weeks going around interviewing residents and Selena, the woman that owns this company, NEVER PAID me for the work.
    She paid my roommate, who was White and came to work late and high and had no background in journalism. You know karma is a trip. She's the worst example of a ghetto mentality that I'd run into up to that point.

    I know that some people condone projects, but after living in shelters for over 2 years, living with a 10pm kerfew, no visitors allowed, no food or drinks allowed, and security guards all over the place, believe me, living in the projects is a form of freedom.

    it does, but this is definitely one of the most well-kept projects. I mean, lighted playgrounds, lots of trees, elevators that actually work. Not to mention, summer concerts. These don't look nearly as bad as some of the former ones in chicago.

    @baltimoreblitz16: you gotta understand that the projects in NYC were made for people to live there for a short time, save enough money and eventually move out. But the economy changed, the manufacturing jobs left, and people couldn't afford to leave.

    5:15 Lady contradicts herself. She says she lives in a condo that costs way too much money on the Upper West Side, but then says why should I leave the project because its called the projects? You left the projects to live in an expensive condo on the Upper West Side!!

    all projects are good and bad together! same here in England....here in Birmingham, area called Chelmsley Wood was also the largest housing estate in whole of Europe for many years before a lot of the tower blocks got bulldozed to make way for new houses

    you need to look up Miriam weixel , who grew up there and so did I. I stayed for about 14 years from about 1949. Miriams mom was a very famous person, a Rosie the Riveter and made a great documentary movies called the Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter, which should be shown again everywhere. That was Lola Weixel , my hero. It really was heaven on earth back in the day but it wasn't perfect, I remember that also. Be well, Be blessed and stay strong.

    agreed they would, so perhaps, it's renovations or making some of the apartment rooms moderate income? Idk what the solution would be. But I will say that tearing down, tearing down does not fix the problem, it just scatters it around. So, Idk maybe a raid of each one to weed poison out? There is no easy solution. However, it does seem that the guests are acknowledging the flaws. They don't deny the crime that took place even then.

  • @internetfan2005
    @internetfan2005 12 лет назад

    it's not that the video does not show the real side, it's that it's showing another side, I think what they were trying to emphasize is that there are some good working ppl who live in these who need affordable housing. Chicago's projects failed due to out of control crime combined w/ poor management. Plus most other housing projects fail b/c they did not really truly replace the neighborhoods that were torn down to build them. You only focused on one word and read what you wanted to read.

  • @internetfan2005
    @internetfan2005 12 лет назад

    nah, it's smart to renovate rather than just knock down. Even w/o projects you still have slums. To be honest there really is no safe place anywhere.

    Yeah that's true. But it's undoubtful that it leads to abuse. The American society lauds so much more than in France the fact to succeed in life no matter how difficult it was for you to achieve this. Do you see what I mean?
    In France as soon as you get in trouble, everybody is like "Damn! Where is the French State? He must help us, QUICKLY!".
    And that's pittyful, French are too aided, in my opinion.

I dont live in Public Housing...but I live in a one bedroom ef.....my whole appartment is less than 200 sq ft...I pay full rent and all of my utilities...but I have lived in income based housing...and it was much better than where I am now...but it was more than that...it was a home.
