The new Restraints on the Big Apple Coaster make a difference. It goes from a very bad coaster to a slightly below average coaster. The transitions are still not good, but I felt the restraints did improve the comfort of riding it. It may still be the most over priced coaster in the USA.

They're definitely better, and as a reasonably tall person I didn't head bang on the new trains, but the forces are still there and some shorter people on my train did still complain about head banging against the collars.

The reason why Corkscrew still exists at Cedar Point is its history and nothing else. It's the 1st 3 inversion coaster in the world built in 1976 and had the 1st vertical loop by Arrow (that is if Great American Revolution wasn't opened 7 days prior to Corkscrew).

There is no reason to remove Corkscrew, it's a soft coaster that seems to not require much maintenance due to the low speed and low forces. A retrack could be nice like a park did in Germany. I am not sure but I think Vekoma is still producing parts for it.
Mind blowing that Arrow was so up in the game compared to other factories.

Maybe you just don't like coasters that are a sort of in-between family coaster and regular coaster? I personally have a great appreciation for such 'transition' rides as they helped me make the jump to ride bigger and more intense coasters when I was young, and lead me to becoming more of an enthusiast. Honestly it's a shame there aren't very many rides like that.

Depends on the height requirement. When I was a kid, I remember I got upset at Hershey park because I was not tall enough to ride Wildcat and Lightning Racer, assumed I could ride those since I could ride Comet and superduperlooper. But those other two had low enough requirements for height that I could ride them and experience my first inversion. That's really the main thing I think why those coasters are important.

    • @UnknownFlyingPancake
      @UnknownFlyingPancake 2 года назад +3

@@NoLanConnection Huh, that's odd. Wildcat was actually my first coaster, I was about maybe 10 and very short. And Lightning Racer is one of the coasters I remember most fondly. I was too scared to ride coasters with inversions so I didn't go on superduperlooper. But once I rode corkscrew at cedar point I found that going upside down was fun and not scary! I guess the height thing probably has something to do with the height of the coasters and their restraints to be able to ride safely and not indicative of intensity.

Got to take issue with Iron Dragon being here. While it’s not categorized as a family coaster it really does act as one and is a perfect step up for kids who are outgrowing the kiddie coasters. It’s smooth and has a nice meandering setting. No, it’s not thrilling or forceful, but I have come to enjoy it as a little break from the big thrills of CP, especially on a hot summer day.

Part of what I like about going to parks like Cedar Point, is that you can sort of ride a timeline of coasters. From the oldest woodies of the bunch like Blue Streak and Gemini, all the way up to the newest like Gatekeeper, Steel Vengeance, and Valravn. I remember when rides like Corkscrew, Iron Dragon, Magnum XL-200, Raptor, Mean Streak, and Millennium Force came out in their respective years. For each of their specific times, they were THE best, and blew your mind. Even with rides like Iron Dragon there, I can remember being the very first time I have ever been on or even seen a suspended roller coaster. I know space can be at a premium at parks, but to me it’s fun to go back on those rides, even if they don’t seem as thrilling today, and remember just how moms-blowing they were at the time. With some exceptions of those that weren’t good from the start. Like Disaster Transport at Cedar Point. LOL!

I have only ridden four of these: Iron Dragon, Corkscrew (CP), Big Apple, and Pegasus.
I only found Iron Dragon to be moderately boring, but the finale over the water and the swinging on the final brake run were the redeeming values for me. The OTSRs were more comfortable than I though.
On Corkscrew, I actually get a small pop of, if not some airtime on the airtime hill after the first drop. The loop is not bad at all, and if you really brave yourself and hold your head still while holding on tightly, you can almost avoid the head banging on the corkscrews entirely.
I only rode Big Apple once with the old trains. The ride was shaky, but tolerable for me. My only gripe was the hang time on the dive loop, as it put a lot of stress on my shoulders.
I agree with you on Pegasus though. The ride may be small for a wooden family coaster, but it has many flaws. The track work is poor, and that sharp turn on the final brake run really throws your body against the train harshly, which is surprising for a ride meant for children. I would not be surprised if the tore this down and replaced it with something more smooth and enjoyable.

Thanks for this cool video ! Unpopular opinion : I absolutely love Monstre at LaRonde. Even though it's rough, I still find enough redeeming factor in this coaster to appreciate it. After that small first drop section, one track rises up into an airtime hill, before plunging straight into the structure, while the other track takes a curved drop followed by a bunny hill. These two moments took me off guard, and are among my favorite airtime moments ! Even after having ridden better, smoother and much more modern woodies, Monstre is still a personnal favorite, stacking against rides like Wodan or Shambhala. Despite a rather weak and bumpy layout full of old-fashioned helices, these two drops really make it worth the ride for me. Furthermore, being at LaRonde doesn't help its reputation.

I rode Time Warp at CW and I think the plot of land it and the awful SLC, Flight Deck share would be perfect for a B&M Invert, Flyer, or Wing Coaster. They both caused head pain and I was legit scared for my life on Time Warp as I was riding with smaller children who were holding onto me so that they didn't get hurt. RMC Wilde Beast would be awesome but it would completely over populate the Mideval Faire area where Wilde Beast and Leaviathan sit. Hulk really hurt me and is high up on my list.

Nice list, here’s my thoughts on the ones from the list I’ve been one
Iron Dragon: I thought it was enjoyable. A little shaky, and pretty tame, but I like it’s setting and I see it as a family coaster
Hurler: Pretty average woodie from my experience. It was a little bumpy and I didn’t get any airtime, but it had some nice laterals
Tornado: Pretty much what you said. I really wanted to like this, since buzzbar woodies are kinda rare and I’m a fan of older wooden coasters, but it wasn’t great. I went back when Dragon was open and Tornado wasn’t much better
Corkscrew: Definitely an unpopular opinion, but I actually prefer this to Valravn right across the midway. I liked these classic arrows, and honestly I found it more intense than rough. That airtime hill is no joke
Vortex: It’s the only standup I’ve been on, but based on this I don’t like the concept. Just uncomfortable, but it’s one of B&Ms older models so it makes sense
T3: Rough, weird restraints that try to cut your legs off, but for some reason I had fun ridding it. It was my first SLC and I’d honestly take this over a boomerang any day, it has a pretty cool layout
Ninja: Really liked Ninja. I honestly don’t think it’s rough and it’s layout is so unique

To be completely honest, I don't hate Grizzly. Mild floater on the drop in the back and its really smooth. CGA puts a lot of work into it so that it isn't rough at all, and they market it as one of their family friendly coasters, between their wild mouse and Patriot(their B&M stand up/floorless conversion). Its not a coaster that I try to get a ride on every time I visit the park, but CGA definitely has a reason to keep it. However, it does take up a LOT of space, and I wouldn't mind if they RMC'd it or took it out in favor of a B&M hyper or an S&S air launch coaster :)

As somebody who lives close to Cedar Point, the only ride I have any issues with being on this list is Iron Dragon.
I was terribly scared of roller coasters for the first 18 years of my life thanks to a ride on Space Mountain at Disney World at Age 3. For some reason the hanging coaster made me more comfortable, so I was able to get on the Iron Dragon. That made me feel I could tackle Raptor... from there I've been hooked on all coasters.
Short Anecdote. I was visiting some friends in Williamsburg, Virginia right before Big Bad Wolf closed. I had always wanted to ride it because of it's similarity to Iron Dragon. I've been told it was much better. I was in line for an hour waiting for a rainstorm stop so I could ride the thing. I left the park without riding it. Then it was gone. So disappointing.
So to make a long story short (too late), I will always love riding Iron Dragon.

When I was a kid, my first coaster was Comet at Hershey Park and I'm grateful for that! Not only has it aged well as coasters grow ever more intimidating, it has become my frame of reference for how a great coaster experience should ride, move and feel. It is astonishingly smooth while being exciting and visually stimulating. I've returned over the years many times after riding more high tech coasters - some terrific and some awful - yet I still feel like that elder 1946 woody should be considered a gold standard in how a coaster ride experience should feel from beginning to end. The Comet may now just be a humble little woody among coaster giants, but it still thrills generations of coaster lovers and creates many new coaster fans each year.
