  • What's the difference between infer and imply? How do you know if someone is "inferring" something or "implying" something? It's important to know which is which! This quick video breaks everything down (and even includes a bit of word history trivia). The short answer: Infer is used to refer to making guesses based on indirect information. Imply is used to refer to hinting at meaning indirectly.

    ◆ imply暗示する, ほのめかす, たぶん意味する
    ◆ infer 推量する, 証拠から考えて恐らく真実であるとする
    ランダムハウス英和大辞典によると、ずいぶん昔から誤用されてたみたいですね!(驚)
    ” infer は16世紀以来「暗示する(hint,suggest)」という意味で用いられているが,現代の語法書の中には,これは誤りで,この意味では imply を用いるのが正しいとするものが多い. ”
