  • The KTM Super Duke R Evo took the top spot in 2022’s test, the question being whether either of the most celebrated new arrivals in BMW’s M 1000 R or Ducati’s Streetfighter V4 Lamborghini could knock the KTM off top spot.
So, 1200 miles of European twisties and the Nurburgring were the venue for the 592 BHP on test as Fast Bikes Bruce, John and Rich had the joyful task of ranking the bikes to find 2023’s winner, each rolling on a control tyre that never disappointed, Dunlop’s SportSmart Mrk 3’s.
Massive thanks to our sponsors without whom this test would not be possible.

I am also getting the standard R version as I am happy setting up manual suspension myself, and the KTM suspension is very good, although the EVO is no doubt a more forgiving ride on the road - it still wants basic setting up which some people never bother to do!

I have the 2023 Streetfighter V4 SP2 and it's such a great motorcycle. So easy to ride, makes all the right noises, rides good within the speed limit and if you wanna wring it out it will absolutely knock your socks off. With the carbon wheels and counter rotating crank it falls into the corners like no other. I've see a few reviewers complain about how heavy the clutch is but it's really not that bad if you don't have the grip strength of a small child.

Quite a lot of it is Belgium motorway for the direct route. If you cruise at 85mph at about 5,000 and a bit revs most the way you should get 140 miles before the light comes on. It's only when the mountain roads starts and the revs go towards the red line that only 90 miles to reserve happens.

Honestly, out of the three bikes... the M1000R is a perfect bike for me. I have replaced the bar and mirrors and also installed a full Akrapovic Ti Gp exhaust system.
What else can you ask for... the Bmw will come with 5 year warranty and 3 year roadside care with an option to extend it yearly. The M1000R is good on fuel, and has all the rider aids you want in a modern road bike.
The Ducati dream is easily depleated by the constant worry about the number of service station along the way.

      @shauns5278 6 месяцев назад

ZH2 isn't a proper competitor it's FAR too heavy and is strictly a straight line warrior. Watch their super naked drag video if you want to see it compete in its environment.
MT-10 and CB1000R are a joke even having them in the same sentence as the others the Yamaha is about 50HP down on power and the Honda is about 70HP while both having FAR FAR cheaper suspension, brake and frame setups.
Tuono V4 is an absolutely lovely bike and if you watched their previous competitions they all love it but the only major update it's had in about 6 years is a frame and suspension update it's 35HP~ down on power and lacks the everywhere torque of the KTM.
The MV absolutely competes in raw power but it's always been too raw and can't keep up on track and lacks comfort on the street.
The Triumph is a little different it's definitely competitive with the Duke but it's already lost to the KTM in previous years and hasn't had any major updates.
So they likely left it out solely for that reason.
The Speed RR is my current favorite production bike but Triumph SERIOUSLY needs to work on their IMU and allow separation of TC and anti-wheelie which holds it back by cutting power in aggressive track scenarios.

    • @shauns5278
      @shauns5278 6 месяцев назад +1

It's not even close to being in the same ballpark.
The MT-10 is only making a little more power than the V2 Ducati and just a smidge more torque, its brakes and suspension are worse than some of the Euro middle weights.
The MT-10 has never been a hypernaked and there's a reason many reviewers say just get the MT-09 SP, honestly just for the fuel economy alone if it's your daily.
Yamaha is long over due for a full rework and should take a lesson from BMW and bring the engine more inline with the full R1.
They have the cheaper R1S engine with steel internals and they should straight up just put that in a new MT-10. Same power as the standard R1 just heavier and cheaper to produce.

Watch previous years videos the Tuono is too long in the tooth. It's over 30HP down on the Ducati and BMW while not having the unending torque of the KTM.
They still love it as a road bike but it can't keep up anymore.

Most people aren't taking liter bikes to a sumo course or autocross event that's no what they're made for.
CycleWorld took the Ducati, BMW and Aprilia to Chuckwalla which is the perfect test track for this class of bikes, long straights and just the right amount of turns.
The BMW was around a second faster than the Tuono and the Ducati was nearly 3 seconds faster despite the fact they ran out of time and the Ducati was only able to have a single flying lap.

@@shauns5278 if I’m correct the Tuono actually was the winner of the road test part of that review and regarding lap times, they used an SF SP2 (costs only about 40K) instead of a V4S so that explains the gap in lap time. Aprilia should make the bike a bit more expensive and add forged wheels or carbon ones. Or add a version above the factory. A Tuono M V4 factory SP ☺️

Yeah as I said even these guys love it as a road bike and they put it in first or second as well in previous years but even factoring in the SP2 vs S had it been the S it would still have been quite a bit faster going off the BMW's large gap over the Tuono.
This test is about the biggest and baddest and the Tuono just doesn't quite cut it. I do agree Aprilia should have one more premium model above the Factory that brings it more inline with the RSV4, if you browse Aprilia forums you can find people who have done the engine swap to the RSV4 version and it simply just needs an ECU flash to work flawlessly.
I love the Tuono and considering it or the Speed RR as my next bike, almost bought a Tuono last year the used and left over prices on them are insane.

Why did you put up the price of a Lambo StreetFighter when you could of easily used a V4 SFSP? or even a standard V4S, you would still mince the others. And if you need an arm around you, then you're riding bikes of this calibre well outside of you're capabilities.

How much? and I would not buy a bike with white tea trays stuck on the side from the Monday Morning Market. That's a KTM RC8R frame I see before me. Can't KTM dress it properly? Great video though. I love the Nurburgring. What about the bloke in the wheel chair letting the KTM design team go back to the dressing up box and put all the old RC8R bodywork back on and bring it back on sale. I'm very bias though. KTM RC8R is my bike.

There continue to be rumours of an RC8R, but the frames aren't the same.
Considering that Mattighofen seem to be ready and willing to produce track-ready bikes for the buying public, I can see that they might produce a track-only RC8R.
But track days have never really intersted me, so I'm quite happy to entertain a bike that will only ever work in that environment. And the result continues to be, surprise! Surprise! that a big bore bike designed for the road is still the best big bore bike designed for the road. That might be because the others are based on machines/engines that were designed to cater to those that spend most of their bike time out on circuit.
For me, there really never will be any doubt. I've spent too much of my (probably more than your) life trying to get 4 cylinders to work for me. As soon as I got on a big, booming V twin there never was any doubt. I might even be tempted by an RC8R. There are certainly machines available where I am. But I'm just getting too old and crocked to be bent over a race set up.
So I'm left with the decision of which 1290? The basic 1290 SD, The SD Evo, or even the SDGT? I still don't know. Maybe I'll just wait for a 1390 version of one of them.
Being a 61 y.o. spring chicken who has always enjoyed doing serious mileage, I suspect that I may still go for the GT.

I'm 64 and have no intention of ever giving up or stop riding my RC8R. It just works for me. Like Spitfire pilots used to say about when they flew them. I can ride 500 mile days on it across Europe. I wouldn't have worn a ruck sack all the way to Germany though. Pulls on the shoulders in tight turns.@@davidcolin6519

Personally, I think that all that aero looks horrible, especially on a supposedly "naked" bike.
I just do not like 4 cylinder engines. I've tried pretty much every engine configuration and I just haven't been convinced. And pretty much all 4s vibrate like the Beemer does. I'm not saying that twins don't, but I have never had fingers going numb from vibration on a twin but have always found it a problem on every single four I've ridden for any distance.
And I'd love somebody to explain to me how a Tuono is a naked bike, it even has a nose cone fairing these days, seriously?. There really isn't anything "Naked" about it. It is even less of a naked bike than the Duck, which is about as unnaked as it is possible to get without adding a barn door. In that sense, the Beemer is hardly far behind, it is only missing the upper portion for it to be fully faired.

Yet the KTM is never, ever last. In fact, it almost always comes in 2nd. It may lose to the BMW on high end power. To the Aprilia on track focus (most commonly). To the Ducati on pure power.
But it doesn't lose to any of the above on all of the above. And I'd argue that the Aprilia isn't even a naked, that any naked bike that can't control engine vibes today shouldn't even be in the running, or that a "street" bike that can't do 100 miles on a tankful rally SHOULD be considered problematic. I mean, on one occasion I almost spent more time fuelling my EXUP than riding it on the trip from Barcelona to Cambridge. That sort of gas guzzling wears thin very, very quickly. And I suspect that these journals weren't even approaching the V-Maxes that I hit on that trip.
I suppose that what I'm really trying to point out ius that a truly great bike is simply more than a great engine, more than perfect focus, more than the ideal track bike, more than the sum of its parts.
And to be more than the sum of the parts, a truly great super naked, it has to be created to be simply a super naked.

They're hypernakeds all the bikes you mentioned are making around 120HP or less as someone who has had an MT-09 up to it's electronic limiter on multiple occasions it's one of the scariest biking experiences out there.
If you want a naked bike that can do 160mph+ you need those side and belly aero. They're all still lacking front cowls and full sport side fairings.
There's a reason Triumph limits the Speed RS to 155mph despite making nearly 180HP because without proper aero and all those exposed elements that is asking for the wind to catch and cause a death wobble.
Also the FTR isn't a naked either if you're going to criticize their choices. Absolutely beautiful bike though.
