ELO were a hit machine. No two songs will sound the same. Everyone has a list a mile long for this band. I recommend, Telephone Line, So Fine, Strange Magic and Fire on High just for starters.
In September 1977 we lost our Dad. I was 18 and had just started my first job from school. I wasn't really myself that winter. In the spring I started seeing my mates again. It was a warm spring and this song came out. It was definitely an uplift to me in my situation. I learned that my Dad would not wish me to be ill or miserable, and the thought of sun, smiles, and good times were possible again. Besides all that, it's a bloody good song. Thank you.
My brother’s favourite group. He died just before Christmas and his funeral was just a month ago. A couple of ELO songs were played including this one as we left the service. I have also loved this and will now always remember my brother when I hear it. Blessings
The " Robotic" sounding voice at the very end says"Please turn me over", as this song was the last track on the first side of the second LP on the double album "Out of The Blue" and back in the day you had to physically get up and go and turn the album over to hear the other side.
Hey, walshaw! We were both making the same comments two hours ago! I'm a music freak who likes to sing along with the words and I had been listening to Mr. Blue Sky for YEARS until someone pointed out to me that the vocoder voice is not singing mister blue sky but please turn me over! Funny and strange at the same time. By the way, are you deep into ELO? There's some strange voices going on in the 30 second intro to their song Shine A Little Love, the first track off the Discovery album. Do you know what's really going on there? I don't know so if you DO you I'd appreciate hearing from you!
“Do Ya,” “Can’t Get It Out Of My Head,” “Telephone Line,” “Turn To Stone,” “Evil Woman,” “Sweet Talking Woman,” “I’m Alive,” “All Over The World,” “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Twilight,” “Shine A Little Love,” “21st Century Man,” “Hold On Tight,” “Calling America,” “So Serious,” “Midnight Blue,” “Xanadu” (with Olivia Newton John), “Confusion,” etc etc etc. yeah, they have a few songs.
ELO was one of the bands we used to play when my unit was attached to protection duties in refugee camps when I was in the British Royal Marine Commandos. We found their music was always a amazing way to reach the refugees, especially the children, by dancing badly along to the songs. The children were always the first to show us how to dance along properly, we leant that after listening the Queen's performance during Live Aid in 1985 whilst my company was in Ethiopia.
The ‘CLANK-CLANK-CLANK’ motif was originally played on a vintage fire extinguisher and I’m pleased to say they’ve included a (more up to date) fire extinguisher in more recent live performances!
Welcome to the world of jeff lynne ..!! At least a dozen songs from the elo catalogue, evil woman, telephone line, turn to stone for starters, he was then one part of the supergroup the travellin willburys that is also a must…enjoy..!!
4:30 I adore this part. The synthesized voice is exquisite, a complete surprise and uplifting part of the song. This song is my feel good, happyness restoring pick-me-up. The lyrics, the melodies, the layers, all of it is spot on on point, just a gold standard record. Loved your reaction, glad you love it as much as I do. My two fun facts about this song, One- the clangs that bookend each chorus were made by striking a fire extinguisher. Fact two- The words spoken at 7:00 are "Please turn me over", as when the song was first released, it was on vinal, meaning the record had to be flipped to hear the other songs on the opposite side.
Equally, "please turn me over" (to the other side) could have the ultimate meaning of a supplication to Mr Blue Sky for change more permanent than that induced by happiness at beautiful weather. The basis for that - obviously - being that Mr Blue Sky is God, who does things "all right" in every sense. The beautiful clang we hear is indeed from hitting the fire extinguisher. But does that mean we want fires (in us) to be extinguished, or NOT to be extinguushed? After all the device is being hit, not used!!!
ELO is probably the band with the most songs I love more than any other band! Often called “The Beatles of the 70’s” even songs not released as singles were great. For ELO reviewers I see a common theme with the same hits reviewed like Tightrope or Telephone Line, one of their best songs especially Live at Wembley Stadium. Great indeed but it was my sister and I going to see the movie Xanadu in 1980 that hooked me forever as an ELO fan. Side one was Olivia Newton John who starred in the movie and side 2 ELO. Movie opener was “Im Alive” and is the song that hooked me forever and is still a favorite. Will anyone else suggest it? Probably not but if you liked Don’t Bring Me Down and Mr. Blue Sky my money is on the fact you will. I’ve also had Im Alive as a ringtone to wake up too. Also fun fact……the song Xanadu is written and performed by Jeff Lynne of ELO but sung by Olivia Newton John and is also a classic. Have fun exploring one of the most talented bands ever!
Cool to find someone else who appreciates "Xanadu". I've been watching the video of Olivia Newton John singing the title song and everything about it transports me back to the 70's: the roller skates, the outfits, the attitude! Love it ❤
You need to listen to the entire "Concerto For a Rainy Day" of which "Mr. Blue Sky" is just one song. There's four songs, "Standin' in the Rain", "Big Wheels", Summer and Lightning", and "Mr. Blue Sky". They really go together.
I was 8yrs old when this classic came out, bouncing around with my Mom and my Dad laughing with us. I've had many bad moods.. but this piece of art always makes me smile! Stay Strong Decent People. Cheer's 🇬🇧
I love this song so much its the happiest song ever , it is my ring tone , how can you not love this group, thier music is so uplifting and makes you feel it. This song is so great and makes you feel so good and happy about life
Just a small sampling of some more ELO songs you can react to: "Roll Over Beethoven" "Evil Woman" Turn to Stone" "Rockaria" "Livin' Thing" "Ma Ma Ma Belle" "All Over the World"
I played this when my friends song was born! I sang it to him and continued to do so. It played at his funeral. Still can’t listen to this without tearing up. He was such a kind young man who fought and died for his country. He will sorely be missed not only by me and his other loved ones but by all who knew him. There were so many people at his funeral that I felt he was a local celebrity. I miss you Russ.
The whole album Out OfThe Blue would blow your mind. Give it a try coz it’s been recommended not coz someone stumped up for something. If you love music, you’ll love the album.
Great version but the best one is the studio cut from the incredible double album Out of the Blue as the ending trails off a bit longer. I love every song on that LP. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius doing almost everything. The sound of their vast catalogue is often different but infectious. The entire A New World Record is also classic. They are not just my two favourite EKO albums but two of my favourite ever. I have played the crap out out of both of them since I was a teenager in the late 1970s.
Fun fact: Mr. Blue Sky is the four movement of a four song blend called, Concerto a Rainy Day. Now, go get your best headphones and go to musical bliss. Your mind will be completely blown.
Mr Blue Sky was made with a 30 piece orchestra and a 20 person vocal section, Jeff Lynne and his 6 band members. The song Mr Blue Sky features a heavily vocoded voice singing the phrase "Mr. Blue Sky". A second vocoded segment at the end of the song was often interpreted by listeners as "Mr. Blue Sky"; it is actually "Please turn me over" as it is the end of side three, and the listener is being instructed to flip the LP over. This was confirmed by Jeff Lynne on 3 October 2012 on The One Show. This song was taken from the "Out Of The Blue" album which was released in 1977 and by 2007 had sold more than 10 million copies.Written and produced by ELO frontman Jeff Lynne. Jeff Lynne wrote the entire album in three and a half weeks after a sudden burst of creativity while hidden away in his rented chalet in the Swiss Alps. It took a further two months to record in Munich. Side three of the original double LP consisted of the symphonic Concerto for a rainy day. In a BBC Radio interview, Lynne talked about writing "Mr. Blue Sky" after locking himself away in a Swiss chalet and attempting to write ELO's follow-up to :A New World Record. It was dark and misty for 2 weeks, and I didn't come up with a thing. Suddenly the sun shone and it was, 'Wow, look at those beautiful Alps.' I wrote Mr. Blue Sky and 13 other songs in the next 2 weeks.
In college in ‘87 on the first wonderful spring day in VT we put our speakers in our dorm room window and blasted this out onto the grass where everyone was trying to sun. Wasn’t anyone mad. 😁
There's so much I could say about this song but seeing you both smiling and enjoying the song says it all. That's what ELO was always about. Making music that made people happy and they did it very well to say the least. A wonderful reaction to a wonderful song, Shawn and Mel, and keep doing what you're doing!
Ah Shawn and Mel my favourite band since the early 70s. You cannot go wrong with the genius that is Jeff Lynne and E.L.O. So many wonderful songs. "Mr Blue Sky is the final song of 4 from the "Out of the Blue" album collectively known as "Concerto for a Rainy Day" that should be listened to in its entirety. It is magical. Thank you. Paul 👍😊
This was named the happiest song in the world!❤🌈🌞
can you imagine - a whole song about a clear sunny day and how happy it makes everyone feel. such good vibes.
ELO were a hit machine. No two songs will sound the same. Everyone has a list a mile long for this band. I recommend, Telephone Line, So Fine, Strange Magic and Fire on High just for starters.
I was obsessed with them in like 8th grade - freshman year of high school and every song I’d check out would be amazing
Good choices and add Roll Iver Beethoven!
@@joelliebler5690 agree, add that!
Same here😎
You should hear elo version of chuck berry's roll over Beethoven. It would really make him roll over 😅

You should definitely do "Turn to Stone" next. You'll love it.
In September 1977 we lost our Dad. I was 18 and had just started my first job from school. I wasn't really myself that winter. In the spring I started seeing my mates again. Sorry for your loss. I can only imagine how difficult that would’ve been. Just wanted to give you a shout out
🙏🌷♥️🌷🙏
I love how you smile immediately when the song starts. THAT's ELO!!
Welcome To the Sheer Musical Genius of Jeff Lynne & ELO
"Last Train To London" "Can't Get it outta My Head" "Rockaria" " Livin Thing"
Thank you Shawn and Mel! Telephone line please please please!
My brother’s favourite group. He died just before Christmas and his funeral was just a month ago. A couple of ELO songs were played including this one as we left the service. I have also loved this and will now always remember my brother when I hear it. Blessings
Probably the most successful blending of orchestral instruments & rock ever.
You guys do like that ELO!! Me too! Very upbeat tune here!! Rock on, S & M!
I was born in 1961 and therefore lucky enough to have grown up with all that wonderful music.
Love this band , am glad to have been alive when this was on the radio. Great times great music.
Agree 100% 👍😊
The " Robotic" sounding voice at the very end says"Please turn me over", as this song was the last track on the first side of the second LP on the double album "Out of The Blue" and back in the day you had to physically get up and go and turn the album over to hear the other side.
what was the song outplaying into the start of this !.

High path, they are very small clips from turn to stone and concerto for a rainy day, both off the same album as mr blue sky, out of the blue…👍
@@tonynash1782 Correct and accurate info. I love that!
Old Skool Vocoder, makes you speak with the voice of an Organ.
Thank you so much 😊
And get a brain fried with 10538 Overture (esp the early one with Roy Wood in the line up !)
Showdown, Fire on High, Four Little Diamonds, Living Thing, Endless Lies, Hold on Tight, Ticket To The Moon

That's a really nice story. Thanks for sharing!

ELO are still selling a ton of records! New generations never fail to find them. 🤩
You're both looking great today and I love Mel's hair! Looks great on you!
The ‘CLANK-CLANK-CLANK’ motif was originally played on a vintage fire extinguisher and I’m pleased to say they’ve included a (more up to date) fire extinguisher in more recent live performances!
You two are always so positive. I'm glad you came across this. E.L.O. is just great. I'm glad you felt uplifted. You should be. Take care. 😊

ELO has so many HITS, I would recommend TWILIGHT not very known but it is a GEM, too.
Twilight is marvellous! I love the entire Time album!
Twilight is my favorite ELO song by quite a bit, but *none* of the reactors I watch have done it.
Telephone line, Last train to London.. So many great songs....

At times Shawn reminds me of Flip Wilson. Anyone else?

You probably heard that over lockdown, this song was voted Number 1 in two polls in the UK for the happiest song,....EVER

You have to react to "Showdown." Think you'll love it!
Fantastic song and melody.
My Mom was at school with him in Brum ,so loved them from the 70s , my albums is Aldarado and Time 😎
Ah Shawn and Mel my favourite band since the early 70s. You cannot go wrong with the genius that is Jeff Lynne and E.L.O. So many wonderful songs. So wished I could have seen them live
If you want something a bit whimsical from ELO, take a listen to 'Wild West Hero'. You will LOVE IT!
Thank you so much for listening to this stuff, I've been bought up on it.
Jeff Lynne, one of the greatest pop songwriters of our generation. Solo and running ELO, Jeff is a super writer, singer, musician, and producer!
A good song about just enjoying a beautiful day is It's a Beautiful Morning by The Rascals. The first line just makes me happy.
Any time my depression starts to get out of control. I listen to this everyday when I wake up❤️❤️
And Mel... you look fabulous!
The happiest song ever.
Yes Shawn, Mel has a beautiful smile 😊
ELO has never ever made nothing but wonderful music.
A great rabbit hole to crawl down!
